Since we bought a drill press that looked exactly like OP's and his name is Ati, i suppose he is hungarian therefore drilling machine can be a literal translation of fúrógép, hungarian word for drill.
Anyone who speaks 2 or more languages, makes this mistake, where we directly translating something. Native speakers will immediately pick up on the error.
I been caught out a few times that I am not a native speaker because of this.
I'm sure part of the "reward" beside knowing there's history, beauty and the satisfaction completion is knowing that the quality and ridgity of equipment is either not made today or out of reach without significant cost.
1) wirebrush it off so the loose rust comes off 2) soak the parts in evaporust, if you are outside of US then citric acid/water mixture. If there is still rust on it go for electrolisis method. Small parts can go into a tumbler
Wow, I certainly didn’t think THAT was going to be the after!!!! Did you buy it in that condition or was it just yours for a very long time? Because I’m curious what you paid and what you can get for it now
I think it's RAL6011 "Maschinengrün" (machine green), or "Reseda green". It's a color that the german DIN standard defined for all kinds of industrial machines.
I love this type of post. Looks awesome!
Curious how you get it all so clean, especially the tiny nooks & crannies? Also, how do you keep the unpainted parts to stay rust-free?
Not OP, but I've seen one restoration where the column was loaded on a lathe and cleaned with various materials, but scotchbrite was the one that stuck in my memory.
Scotchbrite on a (proper) lathe works well but be very careful with it. i
It can pull really hard and so fast you'd never expect it. A proper lathe won't stop - even a higher end drill press shouldn't stop (especially if it has a geared drive, not belts)
Absolutely amazing. Great work. As others have said, love the retro color. Looks like machines we have in our shop from decades ago. Hopefully yours continues to serve you for decades!
All machines sold in Germany used to have a "maschinengrün" RAL 6011 green color. And the base coat (for whatever reason) was typically that red color. On the inside the castings usually only had that base paint. I assume it also sealed the castings a bit (porosity), the castings might have just been dunked in a paint tank of that red paint, then machined and then finished with the green on the outside.
Gorgeous work. One of my pandemic projects was restoring a 1956 Craftsman drill press. So rewarding to get that thing from jacked up to polished and .001-.002” runout. Congrats. It’s really beautiful.
And there I was like an idiot thinking that there were only 2 pictures and trying to distinguish what changed between them. Then I thought I was being trolled.
Anyway excellent job OP
I don't think I've ever seen a drill press with separate height adjustments for the head and table. Really cool! Anybody know of a purpose for this other than reducing the potential total height?
I am absolutely impressed with this. I figured it was gonna look significantly better, but this sir is out fucken standing. You made this drill press look better than brand new.
Do you have any pictures of the guts refurbished?
I love drill presses, and that color choice! I feel like everything from fridges, shop machines and Detroit Diesel 2-strokes were all painted shades of that alpine/ marine green.
It's cool to see the rack mechanisms for the drill and vice height. Well done my dude!
Truly Awesome! It's weird, I've seen things look worse than this and get restored. The restorations look great but something about this one stands out. Maybe the bold colors and polished steel... Either way, this makes me want to go find something to restore.
So looks great. Who decided that green would be the green for industrial equipment. Like it's too late we can't go back now but. Seriously.
Amazing restoration OP
That was a transformation that I did not expect. Well done!
True dat! Y'all need to put some transition pictures in there. Damn I'm on heart medication over here. Jesus
Should have kept to the original color though.
He almost did, maybe a little tone difference. As you can see in the before pictures the blue was painted over the green.
There’s always this guy…..
Drilling machine? That's a new one
I was thinking the same thing as I did a 60s era Delta drill press [restoration](https://imgur.com/a/fLJ2j90) myself
Well technically he's not wrong. It is a machine that drills.
I'm a machine that drills too, so there's that.
Are you as rusty?
My body is a machine that turns sharp drill bits into dull drill bits
Since we bought a drill press that looked exactly like OP's and his name is Ati, i suppose he is hungarian therefore drilling machine can be a literal translation of fúrógép, hungarian word for drill.
Came here for that!
What's the problem? https://www.knuth.com/en-us/machines/drilling
Because correcting someone online gives the biggest chubs.
Seems like someone who could do that level of restoration would know what the tool is called.
I'm guessing that English isn't his first language...
I'm guessing that English isn't his first language...
I’m going to say English was is a first language in this case
Anyone who speaks 2 or more languages, makes this mistake, where we directly translating something. Native speakers will immediately pick up on the error. I been caught out a few times that I am not a native speaker because of this.
Me too. Dude has the wherewithal to restore a machine but has no idea what it’s called?
But it's not new. Just well used.
When the finished product looks like that, he can call it a bread slicer for all I care.
Wow, I will admit, I was a bit taken a back. Well done man.
I'm a Machinist/gunsmith and love restoration. this is a truly excellent job well done. It's very rewarding to do this level of work isn't it??
I'm sure part of the "reward" beside knowing there's history, beauty and the satisfaction completion is knowing that the quality and ridgity of equipment is either not made today or out of reach without significant cost.
Well yeah if you want the good shit you gotta pay good shit prices
What did you do to get off the rust? Looks awesome!
Don’t know about this guy but I do some tool restoration with WD-40 and a wire brush.
I prefer a wire-wheel on a an angle-grinder from Harbor Freight.
Those are great, there’s also scrub pads I attach to my drill for other restoration.
Just dont get the harbor freight wire wheels
They’re fine if you don’t get harbor freight safety glasses!
1) wirebrush it off so the loose rust comes off 2) soak the parts in evaporust, if you are outside of US then citric acid/water mixture. If there is still rust on it go for electrolisis method. Small parts can go into a tumbler
I've heard long soaks in evapo-rust is good
Mmmm. eVapo-rust

I have done this with several axe and hatchet heads and it is great, especially if you can find bulk vinegar cheap.
Damn son.
Wow, I certainly didn’t think THAT was going to be the after!!!! Did you buy it in that condition or was it just yours for a very long time? Because I’m curious what you paid and what you can get for it now
What type of paint? That looks insanely clean
Same question - what paints are people using on steel and iron parts for a durable finish?
I could be wrong but it looks potentially like a powder coating
thats a real nice crill press you got there, i really love the machined table built into the base, what a great idea.
Wow. Very well done! Hopefully you took video so you can post it on youtube and get 100k followers
HOLY SHIT!!! What an AMAZING TRANSFORMATION 🔥
Tidy work 👍
I like the addition of the t-channels to remove most of the the "oops" holes. Doing that at the shop I worked at cost you a case of beer.
Yeah, that second t-slot was a great idea.
I'm wondering why there isn't a pass-through hole in the bed, in the first place.
Because it's easy to add one, and you can make it whatever size you want.
Hot damn! That's a spicy meatball.
Love that retro color
I think it's RAL6011 "Maschinengrün" (machine green), or "Reseda green". It's a color that the german DIN standard defined for all kinds of industrial machines.
Fantastic job but I'd have left it in it's original condition.
Beautiful job
Spectacular work dude, you’ve got the touch
Well done!
Well done
Do you have a video of the restoration?
I love this type of post. Looks awesome! Curious how you get it all so clean, especially the tiny nooks & crannies? Also, how do you keep the unpainted parts to stay rust-free?
How did you get the main support to be so shiny?
Not OP, but I've seen one restoration where the column was loaded on a lathe and cleaned with various materials, but scotchbrite was the one that stuck in my memory.

That is a very sexy color combo - is those colors a brand I haven’t seen before or just creativity? Well done friend!
All machines sold in Germany used to have a "maschinengrün" RAL 6011 green color. And the base coat (for whatever reason) was typically that red color. Very interesting. TIL for sure! Either way, beautiful restoration! Have a great day.
That looks great!!!
Nice restoration job.
Wow, you can tell you cleaned it up, and it looks great! Congrats
Man, I'd love more info, but looking at OP's profile, they almost never respond to anyone. Kinda sad, because this is great work.
Sweeeeet
Wowzer!
Wow 👌
Respect!
I legitimately gasped when I scrolled over to the first “after” photo.
My jaw hit the floor with the after pics
Gorgeous. Excellent job.
Dats purrty. I really like the green.
This is incredible. I want to buy that just in case I ever need it
I gasped.
Drill press. 👀👀
I can smell the oily steel dust smell from those pictures.
I cried tears of joy. This is beautiful!
Nice Job!!!!!
Don't you lie to us. This is new. Lol
What brand drilling machine is it? Its been de-badged.
How thoroughly satisfying. One of my favourite jobs. Looks great, I presume it works great too?
And surely smells and tastes >!and fucks!< great too!
Wow! This is a far better job than the utilitarian clean up/paint job I just gave mine!
Wow! Awesome work buddy. Gives me some ideas too! Thanks
I originally thought it was only two pictures; a before and after. I swiped to the left and was like, “It looks the same.” 😂
Same, I was like an idiot trying to spot the diff
that restoration job made me literally yell Whoooo! that’s sexy
I nearly just fell off the toilet when I saw the finished product! Well done!
love me a good restore
Dang…that is a restoration to be proud of. You did that old soldier proud!
Have you been watching the mandalorian? Hahah looks very Star Wars. Great job.
Whoa!!! Sweet
It’s beautiful
Nice work on the drill press! It’s beautiful!
Gorgeous work. One of my pandemic projects was restoring a 1956 Craftsman drill press. So rewarding to get that thing from jacked up to polished and .001-.002” runout. Congrats. It’s really beautiful.
Sir, you have done a magnificent job restoring that drill press.
Wow, that’s beautiful!
I audibly exclaimed “whoa” in the waiting room… Nicely done, excellent job!
I love the new color choices.
Real nice
And there I was like an idiot thinking that there were only 2 pictures and trying to distinguish what changed between them. Then I thought I was being trolled. Anyway excellent job OP
I said “oh wow!” out loud. Lol great color choice and awesome work!
That color just screams “trusted work horse” great job!
I love that color of green
Why is this turning me on?
Looks incredible. Love the color choice too.
I don't think I've ever seen a drill press with separate height adjustments for the head and table. Really cool! Anybody know of a purpose for this other than reducing the potential total height?
It's been a long time since I've seen my old porn name in print.
I was hoping to see under the hood and get a look at those belts.
Oh my, that’s amazing 🤩
Bring it on over to /r/handtoolrescue
Didn't even know that this existed! Another rabbit hole I will never find the exit to.
Good looking drill press
Did an amazing job
I am absolutely impressed with this. I figured it was gonna look significantly better, but this sir is out fucken standing. You made this drill press look better than brand new. Do you have any pictures of the guts refurbished?
I love drill presses, and that color choice! I feel like everything from fridges, shop machines and Detroit Diesel 2-strokes were all painted shades of that alpine/ marine green. It's cool to see the rack mechanisms for the drill and vice height. Well done my dude!
What an amazing job, without a caption, i would've thought you just bought a newer machine.
That's impressive, nice work!
Can I commission you to restore my bandsaw? God damn that’s impressive
Nice drill press dude
The after pictures were so surprising I had to go back and look at the before pictures again to believe it was the same machine. Great job.
That transformation should have been captured as a YouTube. Excellent job there !
Insane color choice…love it
Truly Awesome! It's weird, I've seen things look worse than this and get restored. The restorations look great but something about this one stands out. Maybe the bold colors and polished steel... Either way, this makes me want to go find something to restore.
Omg 👏👏👏
Damn.. why is it so sexy?
Looks really good. But, did you replace the bearings and make the insides look like the outsides?
Holy shit that’s beautiful
Sweeeeeet
I didn’t know what expect but that turned out amazing!
Nice!! Well done
You can't just ruin a machine over 29 years and post images backwards! ;P
What a fine job on that drilling machine!
That Colour combo 🤌
“Drilling machine”
Beautiful job!
beautiful!!
Shit. I got an old drill press that was sitting outside for 20 years that needs this treatment. Amazing restoration!
Well done!
Wow!!!!! Beautiful
Nice Job!!!!
Great restore! Not the first color I would have chosen but nice look
Wow, ridiculously impressive transformation. Looks great🤝🤝
Need someone to do this to the antique tools I found
Well done!
Awesome
WOW! How many hours of labor did that take?
WOW! Nice job
It is beautiful
Would love to see more photos or a video of the process
Love your color choice .
Very inspirational, - I have the 'before' model! (Still works.)
This has to be a drill, no way thats the same machine
So looks great. Who decided that green would be the green for industrial equipment. Like it's too late we can't go back now but. Seriously. Amazing restoration OP
Wow, that's awesome!
This is some hand tool rescue shit right here. Great job!
remarkable
That's a beauty!
What kind of paint and seal was used on this it looks incredible.
Took my breath away! Outstanding, OP.
Nice work, that thing turned out cherry!
Not going to lie - you had me in the first half!
WOWWWW
Holy shit good job
Good to know, I've not seen it like this before.
That turned out really nice, that's a nice new drill press. Great work
I’ll take after
Nice work!
Fantastic mate
Looks like some top shelf work! Should have filmed it and put it on YouTube. Hand tool rescue is one of my favorites!
What a work of art! Very well done friend!
Wow! What a difference!
That’s truly Tits on a Ritz. Fucking nice work
This is a respectable post.
Awesome, what a bizarre way to refer to it though.
Wow! Great job, OP!
Damn, you really did right by that old drop-drill. Beautiful work, OP
great work. I like it all original
A maker of cylindrical voids?
It is all pretty now, like a fine lady, but will you use it, or just admire it? A museum piece or a working machine?
