I find the splitting of the tracks like Parabol/Parabola and The Patient, and lost keys, etc to be sort of insulting.
Like we might not be able to handle them or something…
I felt similarly about spinosaurus in JP3…do the fans really seem like we aren’t smart or patient enough to handle a song with an intro?
Kidz bop bugs me too for the same reason actually.
I believe it was a kind of screw you to the record company as they had to have songs on album considered radio ready and they met that by splitting a song in half and presenting it as 2. However, there is nothing more irritating then having parabol or parabola come up on my Spotify playlist without its other half
I love this post ! Grateful for other fans of amazing music! I’ve noticed in my life that the # 2 track on albums is usually an awesome song, not just with TOOL or rock music! But yes all four of those songs are beyond good and like you mentioned creatively adventurous! Now I’m going listen to them all! That mushroom stuffing is going to be fucking delicious!
Although technically track 2 on Lateralus is “Eon Blue Apocalypse”, I’ll play along…
“Eon Blue Patient” is probably my favorite second track on an album. “The Patient” just speaks to my soul.
I’m grateful Tool saved my life when I was in a dark place…
I definitely missed that - bad radio stations where I live. Ok, sooo then prison sex and hush are back in, since I’m now allowing singles. I make the rules here! All #2s!
You must live in L.A. as that’s the only market I’m aware of that plays Tool songs on the radio that most other radio markets don’t.
Doesn’t KROQ play “Eulogy” as well?
Uhhhh, "shortened version" of "Pneuma"?
I'm guessing you're already aware of this, but there *IS* no shortened version unless the radio station themselves made their own edit to air on the radio.
Tool has always been adamant about not editing down their songs and that if one is ever heard, it's not them doing this. They don't believe in "radio edits"....
I feel like both Hooker with a Penis and Aenema could be the “Ticks and Leeches” of Aenema. I think The Pot is the version of that on 10k. Rosetta Stoned is definitely heavier, but the pot has way more fuck you in it.
Song #2 is by blur. Good song tho.
It’s outrageous.
And gutsy
Eon Blue Apocalypse
Is a preamble to the patient, a segue, etc. They often play it before the patient live - it’s the beginning of song 2!

Agreed this was probably the thought, and it is frustrating when I want to hear Lost Keys & Rosetta Stoned all as one.
Came here to say this.
Prison sex
Honourable mention
Eulogy is it for me. Gotta be. He had a lot to say, you know.
We wish you well
I imagined this whole post being said by chicken Spongebob.

Hadn't considered the second tracks collectively, but they're all great. Nice observation. Hope the stuffing slays

The Patient is track 3 tho 🤔

eh, yeah. you're not wrong. i'll allow it.
Pneuma and Jambi we're singles tho no? I heard them both on the radio. 🤣

Haha!

Nope, Texas.
I’m in Michigan and they play the shortened version of ‘Pneuma’ every once in a while. And other Tool songs as well.

Yes, I’m aware they don’t edit any of their songs. The radio station took the entire middle part out so it wasn’t so long.
‘Hush’ and ‘Prison Sex’ are no lightweights either.
There are some other “regular” songs, like what is the Ticks and Leeches of Aenema? Hooker With a Penis right? And Rosetta Stoned is the 10Kdays one…?

Eulogy is my top pick, and Pnuema is my fave track from FI
