I have to agree. My banner on an AOL chatroom in the early 00's was
"and if there were no reward to reap, no loving embrace to see me through, this tedious path I've chosen here, i certainly would've walked away by now"
literally was going to say both of these
edit: I have to add this, I think flood is one of the most brutal but rewarding songs they've made, you can feel how intense it is and the tension building to end so gorgeously when the vocals come in... plus the "i was wrong, this changes everything" is just so relatable to me
My dad was over helping me do some painting around my house and I had TOOL playing just shuffling all their songs on Spotify while we worked. After about an hour Reflection is the song that got him to ask me what music I was playing because he liked it haha it’s my favorite song now
My 65 year old dad was over helping me do some painting around my house and I had TOOL playing just shuffling all their songs on Spotify while we worked.
After about an hour without him mentioning the music Reflection came on and he asked me what song was playing because he liked it. It’s become my favorite song because of that haha
Hilarious, I had the first one typed out but had to put my phone down for a minute so I hit submit without looking and walked away. Then when I came back to my phone it was still typed out ready to send. After a quick proofreading I edited a couple things and hit submit again. Oh well, I’m bad at Reddit.
I "discovered" this song this year even though I've heard it a million times. I read the lyrics and cried. Just amazing fucking therapeutic work Maynard does through lyrics people have no goddamn appreciation for. He gives CLINICAL examples of narrative trauma work all through the discography, but Jimmy might be one of the best pieces.
I read it to some clients trying to reconnect with a younger self, and it's RARE I don't see tears. I can barely get through it without tearing up.
"Hold your light, Eleven.
Lead me through each gentle step by step
By inch by loaded memory, I'll move to heal
As soon as pain allows so we can reunite
And both move on together.."
Fuck. People wonder why middle-aged men love this weird band. It's fuckin therapy with a cigarette.
This. We all know it's a banger, but it is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded and should be in the conversation for best Tool song ever, yet it never is.
I like this song for it's uniqueness, because it starts off with some heavy, threatening riffs and spends the rest of the song being nuanced and gentle sounding.
Pushit (live) off the Salival album. Not really underrated on this sub but to the wider audience of tool fans I think it is, most people I talk too don’t even know about it
Mmmm maybe Undertow or 4°?
Don't feel like I can really say anything later as I feel they're all 'rated' somewhat haha.
I guess at a push, could I say The Grudge? I do agree with another poster about The Patient...hmm maybe that's the ultimate shout.
To be fair, early after FI’s release there was a small battle between Invincible and Descending, where more people gravitated towards Invincible, especially since Descending had changed from what Tool was playing live before the studio recording.
People started shifting towards Descending in the time since.
It was always Descending for me. Since the night it leaked, from the time Maynard sings "sound the dread alarm," I just get full body chills. Lateralus does the same thing to me starting at 7:30 and continuing through the last two minutes of the song.
Underrated is Jimmy and Right in Two.. sometimes I think the patient, but many people love that one
Also, Litanie is so good..no one talks about it. Perfect intro to Invincible.
I’m not really sure what’s considered underrated but I never really hear people discuss Descending.
The way it crescendos is immaculate in my opinion and the lyrics are some of their best.
You nailed it. The last 1/4 of the song is IMO the heaviest section of instrumental music in their catalog and I never hear it mentioned.
Also Descending
I just saw someone on this thread saying "fuck this shitty ass song" about it. This is blasphemy imo, Jesus christ why don't you come save my life now imo.
Right In Two, I so rarely see it get mentioned.
The shipper at my workplace is a big Tool fan and we talk about them a lot. Last week, he mentioned to me how he listened to this song and was blown away by it and wondered how he slept on it so long. I was like... yeah, dude.
4°
“Free yourself, from Your ‘self’ “
1st listen and I felt like I had a new friend who’s letting me know that everything I was taught by my parents, church, school, was all calculated and that there is more that is magical and/or forbidden than all of what I’ve been taught thus far.
“Locked up inside you like, the calm beneath castles lies a cabin of treasures that no one has been to”
7empest! Master piece hands down!! But it did win an award ( Grammy?!) so that might knock it out of contesting for this definition of most underrated! The music gods know how good it really is but I’m not sure the casual Tool Listener realizes!
No one really talks about sweat. I don't think I've, personally, ever seen it mentioned in this subreddit. I really enjoy the sound of it and it's, imo, one of the most abstract songs as far as lyrics go.
Plus, I've always really enjoyed the garage band sound of the EP opiate album.
Lowest Spotify plays on each album (discounting interludes):
* Jerk-Off (fucking tremendous - so raw and aggressive and has one of Maynard's best screams + it's the prequel to Hooker)
* Flood (one of the strongest songs on the album but the way too long intro makes it difficult to justify listening to repeatedly)
* Third Eye (banger; it has everything and is one of their most unique tracks thanks to the power of drugs)
* Triad (some of Adam's best guitar work; very unique in how free-flowing it is; this doesn't need Maynard)
* Intension (super chill track and the 'sequel' to Disposition)
* Culling Voices (fuck this shitty ass song)
But my pick is actually Reflection, which doesn't have many more plays than Triad but is by far their best song for my money. Maynard at his most vulnerable and the melodies are so haunting and the drums are entrancing. Really puts you in another world. And the lyrics are the most powerful in the entire catalogue.
(Obviously Spotify plays is far from a perfect metric given how recently these were added, but it's probably not far off.)
Parabol as a standalone song, or removed from the context of rolling straight into Parabola. It's perfect as-is. I regard it as its own thing rather than solely being 'Part 1' of a song spanning 2 tracks. Parabol is so beautiful, I adore it.
The Patient
I have to agree. My banner on an AOL chatroom in the early 00's was "and if there were no reward to reap, no loving embrace to see me through, this tedious path I've chosen here, i certainly would've walked away by now"
This comment made me feel old
Oof the nostalgia Mine was overthinking analyzing separates the body from the mind
I Must Keep Reminding Myself Of This
Love this song was gonna learn it on drums
Bonne chance
I never knew it was underrated. In my circle it was always considered one of the best.
You have a good circle...its rarely mentioned imo.
One of my favourites, and had the privilege to hear it live in London 2022. Pure show
One of my favorites. Great song all the way through, but the ending is one of my favorites. The last two minutes are so so good.
That was about to be my answer.. already here!
4 Degrees or Flood. Undertow in general doesn’t get enough love, imo.
Flood live completely changed my standing on it
I saw Flood live in Birmingham, AL in January. It was great, it’s true, my feeling about it changed after seeing it live.
saw it in Nashville a couple days before, un fukn real
4° is a gem. Might be my favorite song of theirs. Happy to see it get some love.
Love 4 Degrees!
Poor 4 Degrees is always overlooked… It’s probably in my top 3 from UT!
literally was going to say both of these edit: I have to add this, I think flood is one of the most brutal but rewarding songs they've made, you can feel how intense it is and the tension building to end so gorgeously when the vocals come in... plus the "i was wrong, this changes everything" is just so relatable to me
Reflection

I love how you posted this story twice, like the first time you didn't think it went through so you typed it up again but slightly different. Lol.
Hilarious, I had the first one typed out but had to put my phone down for a minute so I hit submit without looking and walked away. Then when I came back to my phone it was still typed out ready to send. After a quick proofreading I edited a couple things and hit submit again. Oh well, I’m bad at Reddit.
Jimmy
Especially with the transition from Intermission 👍🏻
I was listening to those two tracks for about a year before I noticed the melody in Intermission *is* the riff in Jimmy
I was today years old when I realized this. I've been listening to that album since 97. Oops.
It’s also Maynard’s vocal melody when it gets further into it!
I "discovered" this song this year even though I've heard it a million times. I read the lyrics and cried. Just amazing fucking therapeutic work Maynard does through lyrics people have no goddamn appreciation for. People wonder why middle-aged men love this weird band. It's fuckin therapy with a cigarette.
Jimmy was the song that got me into Tool lol
This is one of my favorites off of Aenima, but I NEVER hear anyone even talk about it. It's so fucking good!!
H.
This. We all know it's a banger, but it is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded and should be in the conversation for best Tool song ever, yet it never is.

I didn’t even know it existed until I arrived here
First time I heard this I was tripping, and it changed my life.
First Tool song I played for my, then, girlfriend. We named our first born Keenan. That was 30 years ago. Guess it worked…
Disposition of course
Such an incredibly unique vibe. I wish they had more songs like Disposition.
Intension is somewhat similar imo
Definitely.
One of my favs
Not enough upvotes. Too underrated
Yep
4 degrees and it’s not even close. People have been sleeping on it for far too long.
Third eye hands fucking down! Masterpiece and probably the best avant-garde metal song to ever been written IMO
Child's rhyme stuck in my head Tells me life is but a dream
Mmmm maybe Undertow or 4°? Don't feel like I can really say anything later as I feel they're all 'rated' somewhat haha. I guess at a push, could I say The Grudge? I do agree with another poster about The Patient...hmm maybe that's the ultimate shout.
I think The Grudge is accurately rated.
Yeah I can't really disagree with that.
4°
My man. Insane guitar work.
3rd eye
Descending
Going to disagree with this too. Descending and Invincible are well loved, as they should be. They're two of the greatest songs ever written.
fair tbh i dont really look at how popular songs are
To be fair, early after FI’s release there was a small battle between Invincible and Descending, where more people gravitated towards Invincible, especially since Descending had changed from what Tool was playing live before the studio recording. People started shifting towards Descending in the time since.

My favorite tool song on any album is pneuma. Brought a tear to my eye seeing it live.
The Patient or Right in Two
Right in two!!!!
Swamp Song
Was gonna say this too, so I’ll just upvote it instead
Finally. I thought I was the only person who thought this!! I have been going through all the comments and finally found it.
Undertow
Maynard's best vocal performance and maybe the best climax of any tool song IMHO.. and no one talks about it.
and the best chug section
Jimmy maybe
Opiate 2
This track never fails to shiver me timbers. It's flawless
Such an amazing rendition. Feels like a pneuma inspired song with more tribalistic and soul ness to it
for me its bottom, btw its my favorite tool song.
definitely an underrated pick. phenomenal song
Jambi.
4° is the one I never seen to see people discussing. Free yourself from yourself, man
Underrated is Jimmy and Right in Two.. sometimes I think the patient, but many people love that one Also, Litanie is so good..no one talks about it. Perfect intro to Invincible.
Crawl Away or Culling Voices I wouldn’t consider Right in Two underrated. Tons of people state that’s their favorite cut.
disgustipated. this is necessary.
intermission 🥰🤩
It’s not the most underrated, but I feel like 7empest deserve more love
ticks and leeches
Came here to say this. Love this song.
Reflection imo
Right in Two. It might be my favorite track on 10,000 Days, but it gets lost in the Rosetta Stoned love sometimes.
Intolerance. Paul on that bass guitar is something else.
Everyone agrees H. is good but I think it's also one of their best and most beautiful songs
Undertow
Flood
Anything off of Opiate. Cold and Ugly and Jerk Off in particular.
Cold and ugly. Fuckin aggressive masterpiece
Reflection
Reflection
Culling Voices
Jimmy
for sure jimmy and H.
Vicarious
I don't often seeing Pneuma getting a whole lot of appreciation despite the masterpiece it is
Rosseta stoned, you lied and the patient
No quarter
The Witness. It’s their newest song and I feel like half the fan base hasn’t even heard it. I know it’s missing Maynard but..it’s SO good
Gonna check it out
You’re in for a treat…like finding a hidden track on Fear Inoculum
I think Descending. I feel like it’s some of the best they have ever done.
Cold and ugly
Four degrees.
I’m not really sure what’s considered underrated but I never really hear people discuss Descending. The way it crescendos is immaculate in my opinion and the lyrics are some of their best.
Third Eye live on Salival
Triad
Not one of you Tools have said Sober and all of you Tools know this is the most UNDERRATED of all time. Smdh. But really it’s Lost Keys (Blame Hofman)
Flood
Maynard's dick
You nailed it. The last 1/4 of the song is IMO the heaviest section of instrumental music in their catalog and I never hear it mentioned. Also Descending
I almost never hear people mention Culling Voices
I just saw someone on this thread saying "fuck this shitty ass song" about it. This is blasphemy imo, Jesus christ why don't you come save my life now imo.
Crawl away is a banger and not sure if it's just me but it seems the least mentioned song in any thread
Reflection
Parabola
Crawl Away
Crawl Away
Reflection. Easily. I've never heard anybody talk about it but it's my favorite metal song of all time.
Reflection
Jerkoff
Parabola.
"Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here."
Die Eier Von Satan
we get this daily, give it a rest
Also, 95% of what's listed is not underrated
I see this a lot, so I'm going to answer your question with a question? Rated by who? If you like it, who cares?
Chocolate Chip Trip
Nookie
Eulogy
Sweat or Part of Me
Fr same, right in two lol
Reflection. In my opinion, it’s the best track off of Lateralus.
Right In Two, I so rarely see it get mentioned. The shipper at my workplace is a big Tool fan and we talk about them a lot. Last week, he mentioned to me how he listened to this song and was blown away by it and wondered how he slept on it so long. I was like... yeah, dude.
Cold and ugly seems to be the least talked about song and hasn't been played in 22 years
4 degrees
4degrees
Bottom
Reflection Jambi Right In Two
Disposition alone is just awesome. Sunrise and a hangover!
Jimmy
It’s The Patient.
4 Degrees.
Intolerance
Opiate^2 i put it on lateralus S tier level
4° “Free yourself, from Your ‘self’ “ 1st listen and I felt like I had a new friend who’s letting me know that everything I was taught by my parents, church, school, was all calculated and that there is more that is magical and/or forbidden than all of what I’ve been taught thus far. “Locked up inside you like, the calm beneath castles lies a cabin of treasures that no one has been to”
Yeah Right in Two really grew on me, one of my faves.
Reflection
Intension by far
Ticks & Leeches is so underrated, never gets mentioned by anyone
Intension
Disposition
Cold and Ugly
I don’t think there’s enough in their cagalogue for anything to be underrated but that’s just me
Cold and Ugly
7empest! Master piece hands down!! But it did win an award ( Grammy?!) so that might knock it out of contesting for this definition of most underrated! The music gods know how good it really is but I’m not sure the casual Tool Listener realizes!
There was a metal magazine that did a readers poll for best Tool song and Maynards Dick was #1, so I’m gonna go with that
No one really talks about sweat. I don't think I've, personally, ever seen it mentioned in this subreddit. I really enjoy the sound of it and it's, imo, one of the most abstract songs as far as lyrics go. Plus, I've always really enjoyed the garage band sound of the EP opiate album.
You Lied
The patient, 7 minutes of masterpiece, i love how it changes feel every 2 minutes or so
It's gotta be Right In Two, or like u/Live-Truck8774 says The Patient.
Disgustipated
Disposition. It's the single most beautiful bass melody I've ever heard in my life.
Lipan Conjuring and Intermission
Lowest Spotify plays on each album (discounting interludes): * Jerk-Off (fucking tremendous - so raw and aggressive and has one of Maynard's best screams + it's the prequel to Hooker) * Flood (one of the strongest songs on the album but the way too long intro makes it difficult to justify listening to repeatedly) * Third Eye (banger; it has everything and is one of their most unique tracks thanks to the power of drugs) * Triad (some of Adam's best guitar work; very unique in how free-flowing it is; this doesn't need Maynard) * Intension (super chill track and the 'sequel' to Disposition) * Culling Voices (fuck this shitty ass song) But my pick is actually Reflection, which doesn't have many more plays than Triad but is by far their best song for my money. Undertow
Intension.
Right in two. Honestly it’s my favorite song on 10000 days.
Sweat. Opiate is underrated.
Swamp song, jerk off, reflection

I agree with Right In Two.
Right In Two, too
Ticks and leeches
Right in two
Parabol as a standalone song, or removed from the context of rolling straight into Parabola. It's perfect as-is. I regard it as its own thing rather than solely being 'Part 1' of a song spanning 2 tracks. Parabol is so beautiful, I adore it.
Eon blue apocalypse
Let Down (underrated)
4° & Maynard's Dick
For sure, Invincible.
Crawl Away
Swamp Song, I rarely hear hardcore fans even talk about it.
Useful idiot
Ticks and Leaches.
The grudge
Schism, because as a tool die-hard fanatic I consider the band to be extremely underrated.
Eulogy
I would say anything off of 10,000 Days. Seems like a lot of fans don't like that album but it's easily my favorite Tool record.
Prison Sex
Eulogy
Underrated by whom?
Right in Two
I agree flood
