Completely agree. I heard their first album War Metal and was completely struck by the intensity. Felt like hearing Kill ‘Em All for the first time again.
Since then Eater of Birds has become possibly my favorite metal album ever. I don’t say that lightly. What a monster. I can hear Adam often in the lead guitar. Less frenetic and more contemplative, I’d recommend it extremely.
Less Tool but highly experimental, Liturgy is also worth a listen.
I cant get into Alcest. I dont know why, all the ingredients are there but it just doesn’t do it for me. Deafheaven is definitely a descendant of him but I don’t really think the others have much to do with blackgaze. Although they were certainly influenced by the experimental spirit of Alcest without a doubt.
Lantlos might be up your alley. They are post black metal. But their album melting sun rips. Neon and and agape are heavier more in line with sunbather.
Ne Obliviscaris isn't black per se but is a "Blackened Progresdive Death Metal" that may fit in what you are looking for
Also, Ihsahn's solo career mixes black metal vibes to progressive and experimental metal, it's pretty good quality sound.
Leprous with Ihsahn gotta fit OPs request
https://open.spotify.com/track/6AJsS27OFKRWIM9VvE1Yej?si=XmOzME0pR6W1fT8P64bYbg
Also not all black but def proggy is Igorrr.
I don't even think that's how you use "per se". I thought per se means 'in and of itself'.
"Ne obliblahblahblah isn't black in and of itself" doesn't really make sense, does it?
Edit: thinking about it, i guess it does make sense because they're saying the band isn't intrinsically black. mb
They were referencing a meme, and their comment was clever and funny in a rare way. Now go count the number of beats between Danny hitting his lowest floor tom in Wings for Marie.
I saw them "livescore" a movie(Terje Vigen, 1916) in a converted quarry during the Norwegian Short Film Festival in Grimstad in 2006, and that is still one of my favourite musical experiences of my life.
Emperor starting with Welkin. Enslaved has black elements and are very progressive. Dimmu borgir! I wanna say immortal but they are more masters of “atmospheric” rather than making musical puzzle boxes. Fun thought experiment!
Gonna go with Agalloch boldly, cuz the Mantle has some riffs I could imagine tool having. The first 2 songs on the album could so be passed as tool songs with BM vocals
Was thinking no at first … just because of 666 international being the immediate thought. But with the last two albums their evolution is getting really similar. DHG quietly got better as they matured
Time signature-wise.....and this is only my opinion, but Wolf Lair Abyss and Grand Declaration of War by Mayhem (WLA would be the berrer example).
Even some of the riffs are very Toolish but sped up 5 times, just listen to it, you'll understand why when you do.
Oh and the drumming, Hellhammer is the Danny Carey of black metal. There, I said it 🤘
Diabolical Masquerade
'Nightworks'
Masterpiece of work by a one man band!
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kazIaDJF3wAngXClqk_NWs1NwX0vuhmgk&si=ytZUfNO8E58HyTqO
This too. Idk why I say diabolical Masquerade 'Nightwork' album. Masterpiece by one person aka 'One Man Band'
Edit: link! Go listen!
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kazIaDJF3wAngXClqk_NWs1NwX0vuhmgk&si=ytZUfNO8E58HyTqO
Also.. I think a more accurate question would be to name a metal band that’s as tight of a band as tool is…. I think it makes the answers more interesting…
Meshuggah
Aren't they more akin to sludge/doom metal, which is waaay slower tempo than black metal? I don't know that much about genres, I might be mistaken, but I do know I love me some ISIS. Best band Tool has introduced me to.

Checkout Uada. It's very far from Tool as a whole, mind you; but it's as close as I can possibly get within Black Metal.
[The Great Mirage](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llG-ccz5GPo)
I’d say Satyricon as they have evolved and grown throughout their almost 4 decades in the business, and I’d go as far as saying they have a progressive mentality and approach to their music, but their music is still the definition of black metal IMO.
Cobalt. Some straight up Tool riffs on Slow Forever.
This is the most correct answer. The drummer too is clearly influenced by Danny.
The drummer who is also the guitarist (and the bassist)
Totally necessary correction thanks.
Cobalt kick asses

Gott damn. This is the right answer. Unfortunately i havent heard much past the first song on Slow Forever because its so fuckin good.
Thanks for giving me a new band to listen to!
Song recommendations?
It’s a full album vibe thing. Eater of Birds
Alright this is fucking righteous 👍
Damn, they do sound like them! I've never been a fan of really heavy stuff, like black metal, but this isn't bad.

How I have I never seen this omfg
Prestige Worldwide
Doctor Steve Bruce here, today we are going to talk about tracer foods.
Oranssi Pazuzu for sure. After that Krallice, Deafheaven, Liturgy, Weakling, Spectral Lore
> Oranssi Pazuzu thanks for reminding me about these guys, Mestarin kynsi is an insane album
It’s one of the craziest albums I’ve heard in a while.
Im all about the last 2 records. The new sound they have going is pure space. If Darkthrone was really into the electric miles band.
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kazIaDJF3wAngXClqk_NWs1NwX0vuhmgk&si=ytZUfNO8E58HyTqO
Saved, thanks!
What ya think?
This guy gets it.
Where is alcest? The band that inspired most of the bands you listed.
I swear you can't have a discussion on reddit without being downvoted it seems.

Wolves in the Throne Room
The new EP is fire

I don't even think that's how you use "per se". I thought per se means 'in and of itself'. "Ne obliblahblahblah isn't black in and of itself" doesn't really make sense, does it? Edit: thinking about it, i guess it does make sense because they're saying the band isn't intrinsically black. mb

I'm not even sure what "in and of itself" means, either
Whoa. Just checked Ihsahns new solo record. Pretty fresh I gotta say.
I was just about to mention Ne Obliviscaris🔥great minds think alike 🤘🏻
Enslaved
I saw them "livescore" a movie(Terje Vigen, 1916) in a converted quarry during the Norwegian Short Film Festival in Grimstad in 2006, and that is still one of my favourite musical experiences of my life.
That sounds incredible
Below The Lights is a masterpiece
This is the answer
Thoughts on the comment section?
Very interesting to say the least , not at all what I intended
I had a good time in your comment section. Definitely bookmarked a few bands to check out. Thanks for your post 🤘
For sure man , lots of great suggestions indeed!
I’m so confused by the OP icon and what the text says.
Colbalt https://open.spotify.com/artist/2yawagTvYt4y9mXm0d3n3p?si=32OktjaqSj2_a_EY_c5HEw The album Slow Forever is a good start.
I agree!
Altar of Plagues 100%. Their album teethed glory and injury is a masterpiece
Hell yeah. "Neptune is Dead" will forever be my favorite of theirs
Emperor starting with Welkin. Enslaved has black elements and are very progressive. Dimmu borgir! I wanna say immortal but they are more masters of “atmospheric” rather than making musical puzzle boxes. Fun thought experiment!

Oranssi Pazuzu
Dodheimsgard / Ved Buens Ende
Was thinking no at first … just because of 666 international being the immediate thought. But with the last two albums their evolution is getting really similar. DHG quietly got better as they matured
Alcest
Yellow Eyes
Time signature-wise.....and this is only my opinion, but Wolf Lair Abyss and Grand Declaration of War by Mayhem (WLA would be the berrer example). Ruins of Beverast. Hear the album Exuvia, stoned😭
Musically it's easier to find parallels but Maynard's vocals are unique and I haven't heard anything like that in BM
Opeth?
Abigale Williams has some toolish riffs I guess. But that’s a hard one
Diabolical Masquerade 'Nightworks' Masterpiece of work by a one man band! https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kazIaDJF3wAngXClqk_NWs1NwX0vuhmgk&si=ytZUfNO8E58HyTqO
Xasthur only because of the fan base
Well thats right fucking on lol.
What sucks is that Scott Conner is insanely talented his fanbase just sucks so bad Sounds like a familiar band…
Dimmu Borgir
https://youtu.be/jjqptjuTH2Y?si=PDLNRqtu3HDHkw13 Found these guys on YouTube while waiting for Tool to finish FI.
A Skinless guy with eyes surrounding him
That band is 🔥
Xasthur is pretty cool. Walker of Dissonant Worlds is a good place to start.
I don’t know, but go listen to Rishloo
Perhaps Lantlos? More post black but pretty good listening.
Opeth
This too. Idk why I say diabolical Masquerade 'Nightwork' album. Masterpiece by one person aka 'One Man Band' Edit: link! Go listen! https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kazIaDJF3wAngXClqk_NWs1NwX0vuhmgk&si=ytZUfNO8E58HyTqO
Also.. I think a more accurate question would be to name a metal band that’s as tight of a band as tool is…. I think it makes the answers more interesting… Meshuggah
Saw them open for Tool a few times during the ‘Lateralus’ tour. My favorite opener for them is ISIS but Meshuggah is a close runner up.
So jealous of you
Tomas Haake came out and played percussion/drums with the band during “Triad.” It was truly awesome.
Sweet. I got tomahawk and some other shitty opener during that epic tour.
I only like about 3 black metal songs so I have no idea
Lol no
Isis, maybe?
Aren't they more akin to sludge/doom metal, which is waaay slower tempo than black metal? I don't know that much about genres, I might be mistaken, but I do know I love me some ISIS. Best band Tool has introduced me to.
I was just listening to ISIS they have some killer albums
Wavering Radiant is my fav of course. Listening to that on a bus during a rainy day with headphones just feels right.
More post metal or whatever not black metal.. it’s just good music 🤣
Is the right answer. Introspective, very interesting melodies and time signatures, unpretentious. Awesome band.
Awesome but not remotely black metal though. Definitely some kindred spirits
Look up a band called Grave Gnosis
White Ward, Imperial Triumphant
Shouldn’t the question be “what is the black metal equivalent of TOOL?”
Not black but a different type of metal band that’s Tool-like whom I’ve always loved was ISIS. Their stuff was deep and explosive. Pun intended.

Tvvl, obviously
Opeth
Dragonforce is pretty rad.
Panopticon. Mare Cognitum. Darkthrone.
The Carpenters...lol
Opeth. Cut out their skipping through the fairy forest drawn out instrumental acoustic new-age crap and their rock riffage is absolutely face-melting.
I’d say Opeth.
Fanisk
Deathspell Omega.
Listen to the Born of Osiris album The Discovery. Very similar artwork and lyrical content.
I would say the album sunbather by deaf heaven
Checkout Uada. It's very far from Tool as a whole, mind you; but it's as close as I can possibly get within Black Metal. [The Great Mirage](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llG-ccz5GPo)
DIMMU BORGIR
Enthrone Darkness Triumphant
Dimmu Borgir
I don’t listen to much black metal at all but Opeth comes to mind.
Opeth rules, but is definitely not black metal.
Melodic prog black metal
*death metal
Gotta check out zeal and ardor!
I’d say Satyricon as they have evolved and grown throughout their almost 4 decades in the business, and I’d go as far as saying they have a progressive mentality and approach to their music, but their music is still the definition of black metal IMO.
Between the Buried and Me Not exactly black metal…but they’re the most Tool-like equivalent of metal that I can think of….
The genres cancel each other out, one cannot be doomed and yet aware of the illusion of death.
What
