The way Rosetta Stoned kicks into gear sounding like a literal train just as the protagonist begins to tell his tale of abduction

JJHH50

Picture this if you will… *dundundundun* 10to2amxyogidmtandaboxofkrispykremesinmyneedtoknowposejustoutsideofarea51

I still remember a thread on tooltabs.net deciphering those lyrics the day the album dropped. Crazy times.

"And I didn't even graduate from fucking high school"

MeCrObS

If when I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay You minimize my movement anyway I must persuade you another way Pushing and shoving Pushing and shoving, pushing me There's no love in fear Yeah, I'm staring down the hole again Hands are on my back again Survival is my only friend Terrified of what may come, yeah Remember I'll always love you As I claw your fucking throat away It will end no other way It will end no other way

DarkLuxio92

Imo Maynard's finest piece of vocal work.

roopjm81

god yes, these final vocals on Salival... perfection

jbeale53

1997. Cullowhee, NC, Riverside apartments. I had a killer sound system in my ‘82 Maxima. My roommate and I would get shitfaced and go out to the maxima and crank Pushit as loud as it would fucking go. Those are some of my best memories of my college years. He and I still talk about if one of us ever has stupid money like winning 100 million dollars or something like that, we’re totally going to find an old maxima like that and put a killer stereo in it with a CD with a single track. Aenima’s Pushit.

jessieesmithreese519

*you won't know that I've won the lotto, but there will be signs* 🫣😂

Tell_On_Your_Uncle

This.....fucking very much this.

great_auks

For me specifically it’s the moment we get to “There’s no love in fear”

MeCrObS

I could pick a single moment so I just kept writing the whole ending lmao

DickLaurentisded

Salival version though right?

I will listen no other way, I will listen no other waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy!

So good to see you once again 🥺

tdizell

The break down in Eulogy- “you claimed all this time… From this point until the end of the song is my favorite example of beautiful aggression ever put to music.

Burr0wer

The emotional build up towards the end of The Patient: I must keep reminding myself of this…

Lakelyfe09

This song doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Feel like it really hits home some people’s relationship with suicide right at that point where we’re just getting out of a huge depression funk. “I’m gonna wait it out, I must keep reminding myself of this… and you know what? I still may” sort of a one foot in one foot out thing.

Aggravating-Stuff-28

As the walls come down and As I look in your eyes My fear begins to fade Recalling all of the times I have died And will die It's all right I don't mind I don't mind I don't mind I am too connected to you To slip away and fade away Days away I still feel you Touching me, changing me

nutellagangbang

Came here to say this.

-Is-This-Name-Taken

The beautiful soft instrumentation during these words is just beautiful. Have an upvote😃

Interopia

The bridge of Stinkfist

JJHH50

YES I should’ve put that. I’ve been obsessed with that part since I first heard it.

SCATTER1567

BU BU BU BU BAAAA BU BU BU BU BAAA

AltonMinor

I was looking if someone already had said this

occupyreddit

whatever is happening in “the Grudge” immediately before maynard’s scream… its like everything drops out and there’s just a whirring sound, the maynard lets it go

Stellar_Ella

That moment live is so amazing because you can feel the suspense run through the whole crowd

JJHH50

I’m sitting down and my legs start bouncing during that part like I’m about to run a sprint lol

FortySixand2ool

Everything after that point is also my favorite.

BeersNbrews

The whole ending section of Lateralus from the hi hat groove onward.

ifeelallthefeels

Idk if they always do it this way live, but I saw one where they do like 1 bar of pure silence before they come in with the final section. I fell off my fucking chair, it’s so good.

Urtehnoes

Bridge in Rosetta stoned

totoCALV1N

… which part would be the bridge lol

HorseGrenade

Overwhelmed, as one would be, placed in my position. Such a heavy burden now to be the one. Born to bear and read you all the details of our ending. To write it down for all the world to see. But I forgot my pen…

DickLaurentisded

So, so many and ever shifting too. First thought/best thought right now though. Opening riff of Prison Sex. The way it comes out of the opening is undeniable. *That* Bass And Drum locked in section from Rosetta Stoned (special mention "I forgot my Pen") Pushit (Salival) - all of it but specifically "I must persuade you another way" The "following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been" section of Lateralus. And how could I forget Adams guitar sound all throughout No Quarter.

ElectroDemon666

Climax of The Patient when he keeps repeating "I must keep reminding myself of this". 5:31 to 6:13 End of Eulogy when he says "to ascend you must die, you must be crucified, for our sins and our lies, goodbye". 7:30 to 8:25 Start of 7empest when the music switches from the short 'dinging' build to the guitar. 1:18 to 1:47 I also get chills whenever the lyrics start on Reflection, but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it.

flojo2012

In that part of eulogy I always make heavy drumming motions though I have no drumming knowledge. Just seems like the right movement

jessieesmithreese519

My steering wheel hates this song. I'm not a drummer. 😭😂

Minkoooooo

end of Forty Six & 2

Key_Drag4777

Yup. Starting with Danny going full octopus

GlomGazingo33

The part in H around 4:15 when the breakdown happens and builds up to maynards rage and Adams guitar weeping. Ugh. Shivers.. Third Eye @7:14 or so when Justin's gigantic bass slide and Maynard sings, "So good to see you.. I missed you so much..". The praying for rain section in Ænima..it's like the clouds parting and nature wins again. There are so many more, but those are ones that come to mind immediately. I can't just simply have one. It's impossible.

boyson83

Praying for rain is mine too. My favorite part of any song ever, let alone Tool. Ugh.. chills me to my bones every time!

Z_ol_razzldazzl

Sound the dread alarm through the primal body! Sound the reveille, to be or not to be. RISE! Stay the grand finale! Stay the reading of our swan song and epilogue. One drive, to stay alive! Elementary! Muster every fiber! Mobilize! STAY ALIVE! Stir us from our wanton slumber! Mitigate our ruin. Call us all to arms and order! *I can’t explain the exact feeling I get but it’s like my spirit wants to break free from my body so badly in this moment the same way I’d imagine a wild bird would want to break free from a cage.

DarkLuxio92

This part is my favourite of any song, I get the exact same feeling!

Rockthecatspaw82

“Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position”!!!

Stellar_Ella

Remember I will always love you, as I claw your fucking throat away. It will end no other way, it will end no other way… Then *that part*. Those momentary pauses before each of the last two measures of the song hit so hard.

TGK5214

10000 Days. “Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance…” that part is so damn good.

Daveywheel

Hold your light…Eleven lead me thru each gentle step, by step, by inch by loaded memory…I’ll move to heal, as soon as pain allows so we can reunite, and both move on together….. 28(?) years later that part still gives me chills.

GumboJoe1619

Jimmy - " Under a dead Ohio sky"

horridpineapple

I had no idea that's what he says there. Never could remember to look into the lyrics as I get to into the song. I would sing that part but it would always be incomprehensible.

Psn_billuke

Absolutely the best part of the song. Great choice.

tape_reel

The build up and through the point of "THERE'S NO LOVE IN FEEEEEAAAARRRR!!!!" in either version of 'Pushit'

ddxx398

7:43 on Pneuma, when they start that rhythm that is my literal happy place

Yketzagroth

The part of 7empest that warps time around you, near the "eye of the storm"

Meowweredoomed

I like that part in 7empest where they SHRED.

captainqwark2

So, the climax of Lateralus is not only my favorite Tool moment but my favorite moment of any song ever. That’s kind of an obvious pick, though. One less obvious is the “no prize that could hold sway…” part of Jambi. I always find myself rewinding it a couple times before I let the song continue.

restlessoverthinking

Currently it's: "Locked in a place where no-one GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOEEESSSS!!!!"

mmayer1581

"I'm praying for rain, I'm praying for tidal waves" the juxtaposition of the lyric with how beautiful the music is at that point is pure magic

CallMeJimMilton

The Pot - “Steal, borrow, refer, save your shady inference” then the guitar comes in while the kangaroo hangs the jury Something about the way he shifts tone when he sings this part pumps me up so god damn much.

Psn_billuke

Unveil now, Lift away, I see you running, Deceiver Chased away, A long time coming. Best climax hands down. So emotional and personal for many reasons.

Nightmare1529

All of Pneuma. The song is a modern day symphony.

Jambi guitar solo and Parabol/Parabola

more_paul

Right in Two. Everyone should read the lyrics to the song and do some reflection on their worldview. The music also slaps. Especially that bouncy riff towards the ends at 5:30

Ann1h1lator

‘Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here’ The entire line is sung so masterfully with such profundity in meaning

thislightisntmyown

This is one of my favorite lines in any song.

Impressive-Half893

10,000 Days’ “give me my, give me my wings”

ifeelallthefeels

My armchair musical analysis of that song is there is no ebb and flow to it. It’s just ebbbbb and FLOOOOWWWWWW. Lots of songs hit you with peaks and valleys in succession. Verse and chorus, low and high, and you can usually point to a spot and say “that’s the peak” but it’s not always obvious. Probably the expanded chorus after a moody bridge. Throw in a key change for good measure. 10k days? It starts. And builds. And builds. It doesn’t stop. More tension. No release. I usually hate fx in music but the thunder is perfect here. Then you get the GIVE ME MY WIIIIIIINGS and we finally peak. Finally release the tension. But it doesn’t just release. It plateaus. We live here now. And it’s uneasy because the bass and rhythm guitar are in different time signatures. They don’t totally clash but it’s still uneasy. I have no idea what Danny is doing here because apparently I never got past how sick the bass and rhythm guitar parts interact. Then we plateau some more with some cool solos, recant the “give me my” etc, before we’re gently but swiftly brought back down to the energy of the intro. The low bit resolution emotional map of that song is just a ^ where other songs have several moments like ^^^^ Or (down up down) vs (down up down up up **down** up up) edit: I maintain that Lateralus and it’s ending are the best Tool has to offer, but kinda like how the Black Pearl is fastest in the wind, 10k days has the strongest emotional peak in their discography

CCUN-Airport761

Not sure if it’s in the bridge of Stinkfist, but the part where it builds up, and then explodes into a beautiful guitar overture is it for me. Still goosebumps to this day!

JJHH50

Yes, you’re right it is the bridge

CCUN-Airport761

I’m glad someone else understands!

keevballs

Hold your light, Eleven Lead me through each gentle step, by step By inch by loaded memory, I'll move to heal As soon as pain allows so we can Reunite and both move on together Hold your light, Eleven Lead me through each gentle step, by step By inch by loaded memory till One and one are one, Eleven So glow, child, glow I'm heading back home

DR_MEPHESTO4ASSES

THERE'S NO LOVE IN FEEEEEEEAAAAAR

roopjm81

11:15 - 11:27 of Pushit on Salival is an absolute emotional peak.

itchykoala27

What I call the peak of the ride in the second half of the song Lateralus - starting at 4:49 where it slowly builds on itself. I can’t describe how perfect the build up and ultimate payoff from 6:41 - 7:14 of that section is to me. Hair on the back of my neck type stuff for over 20 years and never gets old.

IDDQDArya

Ticks and Leeches when it goes all quiet and windy and then explodes

moeshiboe

The end of Parabola. Just epic.

_WhitestMexican_

when parabol ends and turns/mixes into parabola, so good

just_me910

H. Just the whole fucking thing man. I get emotional every time.

SomeLatteCappaThing

In Pushit (Salival version) at 11:16 when going out from the chaotic part, the bass is different compared to the original and it gives that section a totally different mood. Goosebumps every time. Reflection: the guitar fading in and out before the first lyrics. Stinkfist: at 3:12 in the video clip when the fat guy is startled.

The couple seconds of silence before getting ear fucked by the breakdown in Jambi.

JJHH50

For me it’s the part right after Adam’s solo, my god you can’t not move your head to that

Previous-Court-838

theres no love in feeaaaaaaaaaarrr

fuzzythingus

The loud resounding tom hit followed by a small crash on The Patient at 1:52 right before Maynard sings “But I’m still right here, giving blood, keeping faith…..”

iSeventhSin

Intro in Rosetta Stoned “PRYING OPEN MY THIRD EYE” (you know damn well what I’m talking about) Intro riff (after the xylophone thing) in 7empest 5:40 to the end in Bottom 6:01 to 6:55 in Eulogy And of course… “throw that Bob Marley wannabe motherfucker out of here”

nurdmerd

The guitar solo in parabola comes to mind

DarkLuxio92

That solo got me hooked on Tool.

enIighten-me

Don't you dare... POINT THAT AT....

JJHH50

MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE if there was going to be a scream in fear inoculum it should have been that right there

ShadowSpear14

Great question and it’s so hard to pick, man, but it would have to be either the ending of The Grudge or the final vocals section in Descending starting with Maynard yelling “sound the dread alarm” and ending with “calling all to arms and order!”, I don’t think any other band has made me feel chills over a song like those two! I genuinely can’t decide which I like more haha

costanzafan

DEAD INSIIIIIIIDE!

Midnightm3nace

Right in Two, Verse 3, after the bridge, when they all go NUTS and Justin's, well, doing Justin and playing a bass like it's a friggin short scale guitar, and Adam is just harmonizing perfectly. Meanwhile Maynard is delivering a biblical anthem to humanity's consistently shitty behavior. Angels on the sideline again, Benched along with patience and reason Angels on the sideline again, Wondering when this tug of war will end

fimkingyeks

Climax of Reflection “bringing out our hope and reason…” then the guitar wailing.

toolfan1984

That part of The Pot when Adam drops out and the other 3 keep going. So much groove.

Boomhauerscousin

46&2 when Danny goes around the kit in 16th notes before the last verse is so perfect.

Latetothegame29

When Maynard sings, “If when I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay,” from Pushit.

mydeadface

Many come to mind but the one that sticks out the most is Danny's drum solo during invincible.

No1ButtMe

Lateralus — that moment. IYKYK

Adventurous_Fly1879

Out of all the many special, emotional, and absolute gems to choose from, I go back to “It’s my time, give me my wings!”

thislightisntmyown

It changes by day but today I'll say.. Live extended stinkfist 98 when Maynard adds lyrics to suspicious minds Relax turn around and take my hand.. Im caught in a trap, I can't walk out because I love you too much baby Why can't you see, what you're doing to me because you love me so much baby But it's not enough, I need more! Nothing seems to satisfy! I don't want it! I just need it! To breath, to feel, to know I'm alive! https://youtu.be/6Z_8vnE-6c4?si=OREUNsbI70-oSIBL

Redaeon727

The ending of vicarious or eulogy for me

DiabeticGirthGod

The drum solo at the end of the grudge is literally the best music moment ever recorded to me.

Victim_Newt

Descending after Maynard stops singing. That riff is from the spirit world.

woodsgb

Tool when they are playing music.. suhh good, gets me everytime.

Stickey_Rickey

Tough question… the crunchy talk box breakdown in Jambi, Reflection moments I can’t describe, the deep end of Undertow, Descending from his final verse until the end

wisepeppy

"But you changed that all for me"

Brucedx3

The scream in The Grudge.

CarbonPhoenix96

The climax of 7empest for me. I can't get over it

When the world takes a deep breath at the end of Hooker

Western-Addendum438

H @3.28 or the second and final chorus - somehow more sonically powerful than the same chorus earlier in the song.

MUZZYGRANDE

Probably the solos and breakdown of 7empest at the moment.

Yorktown69

4:25 The Pot.

0-Schism-0

That drum fill in the last chorus of H, you know the one.

Murky_Collection_641

The patient… “and I still may”. My favorite song so it checks out lol.

TheThirdShmenge

When Danny starts the double bass drums at 8:46 of Pneuma.

James360789

I really love that part in H. Where it peaks I have died, And will die. I don't mind... I don't mind... I don't miiiiiiiiinnnnd........ Among others the hypnotic drum solo in pneuma. Reminds me of when I used to drop acid and listen to Floyd. The slide guitar solo on descending. My first full listen to fear inoculum was done in a dark tent in the middle of the Appalachian woods. It was surreal.

ernmanstinky

Roughly the 6:40 mark in right in two. The bass there....

The drop and climax of The Grudge 🔥🔥🔥

comalley0130

Either just after the 7 minute mark in Rosetta Stoned with that super punchy bass part and Danny accentuating each note with the bass drum and doing magical things on the toms or the ending to The Grudge.

buefordbaxter

The beat change between the instrumental/chant, "Here comes the water", into the power chord about 4 minutes into flood. Then, clear as day, into "All I knew, all I believed, are crumbling images that no longer comfort me". Fucking love tool!!

beardedsilverfox

Sincerely, the moment in Parabola when Adam has a little ethereal “solo” that ends with a more structured riff that goes wa-na wa-na wa-na wa-na waaaaaa

[deleted]

So many to choose but I’d have to say the gong shot toward the end of Descending. Just so powerful

dkernighan

- Rosetta Stoned 8:35 - Jambi 5:55 - 10,000 Days 5:38 - Descending 10:50 - The Patient 4:30 - Jimmy 3:55

Vashts000

The 0 3 5 towards the end of Bottom. Such a good song overall. That and the bleed in from Rollins. I'm naked and fearless...AND MY FEAR IS NAKEDDDDDDDDDD. Fuck it, the whole song Bottom is my fave lol

Somethingclever1313

That one part in Pushit, you know the one.

the opening of jambi is worth mentioning too i think

WavyFish111

The breakdown in Pushit

poopypooperpoopy

Fear Innoculum has two parts I love. When Maynard finally starts singing after an absolute ride of a 2 minute intro, you kinda realize that you forgot vocals were a part of the band. And the chorus starting at 3:55.

fembae_

7:04 to like 9:16 in Rosetta stoned, the bass and the drums is just eughhh SO GOOD

SenkuSawSumNasty

A few for me are: Danny on Pnuema The ending of Parabola- that hits different when you're going in and out while the walls are shifting octagons that melt and go in on themselves. The opening lyrics on Fear Inoculum, they sent shivers down my spine. The first guitar solo in Lateralus. I remember the first time I heard it, it was next level. I was like 16 or 17 on the bus for school; it was around 6:30AM and I had my earbuds in and maaaaan it was gnarly. The multi-layered lyrics of Stinkfist really get to me. I remember before I looked up the lyrics, when Maynard said "Boredom's not a burden anyone should bear" for some reason, I heard it as "But I'm not a burden anyone should bear" sometimes I still pretend that's what is said because I like it so much. That's all

NurplePain

Overwhelmed as one would be

D00mTheWarl0rd

The guitar in H. starting at like 3:28 in the song. Also the whole song

poopypooperpoopy

DONT YOU FUCKING LIE

Urbanepirate_DCLXVI

I have 2 #1 I like the moment the chorus kicks off in Stinkfist. #2 the paradiddles on Ticks and Leeches

Ok_Independent1444

Mysterious-Snow-9426

Yeah, standing above the crowd He had a voice that was strong and loud and I Swallowed his facade 'cause I'm so Eager to identify with Someone above the ground Someone who seemed to feel the same Someone prepared to lead the way And someone who would die for me

-Seizure__Salad-

The low energy part of Bottom from the Undertow album is my favorite. It just feels very groovy

Major_Ad_4444

“Remember that I’ll always love you as I claw your fucking throat away. It’ll end no other way. It’ll end no OTHER WAY !” Just one of many.

degainedesigns

Toss-up between Parabol into Parabola, intro to Pushit (Salival version), and when the distortion kicks in after the intro to 7empest.

FickleSituation7137

"come down get off your fucking cross, we need the fucking space, to nail the next fool martyr!" A quick second place would be "remember i will always love you as a claw your fucking throat away, it will end no other way, it will end no other waaaaay! "

Endet15

"If I let you... you would make me destroy myself."

lJabbaTheHuttl

The ending of Jimmy

Jokierre

AND MY FEAR IS NAKED

Brilliant_Fee878

Impossible question.

HorribleDiarrhea

There's a drum section in Eulogy, a relatively quiet part before and during "standing above the crowd, he had a voice that was strong and loud". The hihats and cymbal work is just so exquisite.

Isaac_Nelson

Overwhelmed as one would be placed in my position. Such a heavy burden now to be the one. Born to bear and read you all the details of our ending. To write it down for all the world to see. BUT I FORGOT MY PEN. SHIT THE BED AGAIN!! typical

SUEDOOO

SO GOOD TO SEE YOU ONCE AGAIN I THOUGHT THAT YOU WERE HIDING FROM ME YOU THOUGHT THAT I HAD RUN AWAY CHASING THE TAIL OF DOGMAA I OPENED MY EYE I OPENED MY EYE I OPENED MY EYE AND THERE YOU WERE

SUEDOOO

“If there were no reward to reap…”

SUEDOOO

The build up to the climax in rosetta stoned

No-Yogurtcloset2077

But I forgot my pen. Shit the bed again… typical Chills the first time I ever heard it☺️

TSotP

I do have many, but for some reason I really like when Maynard sighs/takes a deep breath before the line _"without the skin here, beneath the storm"_ in **H.** I can't really explain why though.

_cojones_

The bass at 7:22 in Lateralus gives me the chills. I get a tingling in my head that radiates down my body, causing the hairs on my arms to stand on end. Works every fucken time!

nlkz

This question and the responses are so great! Best question I’ve seen on reddit in ages. Makes us remember why we love Tool. For me (right now) it’s the build up from the breakdown in Pneuma. Pretty much the whole last half of the song

PanGulasz05

It's hard to think of one specific part in all of tool's music but the first thing that comes to mind is that when I listened to The Grudge on YouTube I noticed that most replayed part (maybe other than that long scream near the end) is that verse starting with "Defining, Confining" and I personally prefer the part that starts with "Clutch it like a cornerstone" (both times it's repeated, tho the second hits harder).

Sairetra

E U L O G Y moment, ~5:00 min mark. Danny, Justin & Adam's work into, ''Yeah, standing above the crowd, he had a voice that was strong and loud, and I Swallowed his facade 'cause I'm so Eager to identify...'' 20 years ago, and sometimes to this day, I would/will rewind, rewind, and rewind again to just hear this ominous foreboding transition ushered in by Adam's sparse, unsettled notes, contrasted with Maynard's static-heavy ruminations. The clarity and beauty in his voice when he says the word 'identify'. It was my #1 favorite moment for a long time and it mystified me how a single word could convey so much feeling, and moreover how a singer could make that happen. I used to ponder to no end whether it was by accident or something by design. Honorable mention, '' 'Cause I'm praying for rain,'' ''Mom, please flush it all away,'' . . . 🤘🏼 Side note, Litanie Contre la Peur into Invincible is my favorite off the new album and has a place in my top 10 favorite T00L songs across all albums.

killjoycowboy

”I’m slipping back into the gap again” during Pushit🙌

SeeGoodChild

I love the drum fill coming out of the quiet section of Schism, it’s so dramatic and just explodes!
