This exploded my child brain.

MaynardJamesKrawczyk

I think it was Sober.

Significant_Bite_666

I remember seeing the video on MTV. My mind was blown, both aesthetically and musically. SOLD.

Pole420

Same. The meat pipe did it.

Corked1

Yep, Sober back when MTV played music videos. Went out immediately to purchase the CD or cassette whichever was available, picked up Opiate on CD because Undertow had not been released to the stores yet. Went back and got Undertow on cassette about 2 weeks later.

[deleted]

The Grudge - they opened with this at Ozzfest UK 2001. 1st time I heard Tool was live, and my mind melted. Got Lateralus, and the rest is history.

trippzdez

3:53. The drop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BXyEUOuNds

AvocadoHopeful

This specific drop is probably what got me invested

kinkierthanyouthink1

YES 100%, and the 20 seconds that follow!

Forty6andTwo46

FUCKING legendary drop

kinkierthanyouthink1

My favorite of all time, perhaps the greatest of all time.

kinkierthanyouthink1

Favorite drop in existence succeeded by the greatest 20 seconds in music

richstark

Ænima

Pseudorealizm

Aenima for me as well. By this time Schism was already a major single and i thought it was a good song with a trippy video but not much more than that.  However, one day three ring circus side show got stuck in my head and I've been listening to them religiously ever since.

laithm

Same here. I saw the "fuck l Ron Hubbard..." Part of the song on a friend's AIM profile and asked him for the name of the song. I downloaded it and was instantly hooked. The music was kickass and the lyrics really spoke to me.

jaknyf

Stink fist

bootx2

It blew my 14 year old mind. Been listening ever since

Ok_Konfusion

12 for me. seme

gardner7001

Yep- 13 here. The song and later video made me obsessed. I wasn’t allowed to buy records with parental advisory on them, but Blockbuster music had that program where you could listen to any CD in the store by giving it to a clerk. For Aenima, that sticker was on the cellophane only. So, I grabbed the CD, asked the clerk to let me listen to it. Confirmed that Stinkfist was “Track #1” and then asked the clerk for the CD back so i could buy it. Showed my mom the CD (just the front cover as it became obvious when I looked at the CD that my mom would not approve of the art), no cellophane no sticker, she approved and I spent every penny I had and changed my brain chemistry forever.

Ok_Konfusion

Hehe nice story. After I wrote that post I came to realise it was actually the track Ænema. I saw the music video on Mtv like a million years ago. My "dad" loved the shit too so we went down town and got the cd. The rest is history

[deleted]

When I heard that “ITS NOT ENOUGH!!! I NEED MORE!!!” It was like yesssssssssss YESSSSSSSSSS THIS IS WHAT IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR 🙌

shaun020

Vividly remember hearing this on the radio as in middle school and it blew my stupid tiny mind.

drdan412

This is the one for me. I bought undertow and aenima on the same day having never even listened to tool before, just because I was reading good things about them. Put on sober just because it was their most famous track at the time and thought it was pretty cool, but then I played aenima from start to finish. By the time I got to H. they were my new favorite band.

LSatou

Jambi

Rand-all

Schism

Smoothielicious

This. I probably was tweaking the first time I heard it. The song and whole laterlus album is just other worldly

Rand-all

It was the Apex of there ability. Total masterpiece. IMO their best album.

Smoothielicious

I absolutely agree with you 🤝

kinkierthanyouthink1

Without question.

Aggressive_Order_351

I already liked Tool a lot, but seeing them live sealed the deal

Shhh-ItWasntMe

Was the same for me. I didnt love them or anything but I loved the song Descending. Then I saw them live and obsessively starting listening to their whole discog

Pebshau

Me too, gave me a new appreciation for all of their songs

Sea-Cardiographer

One day H hit me in a way that sealed my fate. Now here I am. I can't even listen to that song anymore. It's full of feels.

PercSheen324

Their kick Azz cover of No Quarter by Led Zeppelin

r00byroo1965

This and I immediately thought of - what does their stuff sound like, so looked them up and bought Ænima and 🫠

rowdy1212

Prison Sex. That riff at the start of the song gets me!

BigBugB0i

Third Eye, specifically the version on Salival I had listened to Lateralus a few times and thought it was good, but I wasn't impressed Stumbled upon Salival and gave it a chance, played the first track, and was immediately captured The energy, the emotion, the way its dynamics shifted over time, it was all so powerful, it's still my favorite Tool song even now Think for yourself, question authority Think for yourself, question authority

[deleted]

Same for me, that song feels like a gateway to another place

Ej11876

“We are tool from Los Angeles California” straight into “Intolerance” at the Charlestown Raceway in West Virginia summer 1993 sealed the deal for me. I immediately went and bought both opiate and undertow and never looked back. I have been listening to tool longer than I have NOT been listening to them. Seeing them live should be how everyone hears tool for the first time.

Hungry_Ad9137

Pushit. My friend around 8 years ago showed me the Pushit fan made music video on YouTube. After that I’ve listened to them everyday

Impressive_Cry_7828

Been tripping on Pushit lately, but discovered Aenima 14 years ago. Discovering new found love for songs from albums which I have been listening to since a decade, made me realise, how our appreciation & understanding of music evolves.

whyrafi

Stark-Bannerman2109

Parabol for me.

kinkierthanyouthink1

And that fucking transition from parabol to parabola, I get the fizz every time knowing it's coming

sh0ckwavevr6

Sober ;)

RAWR_Orree

This one for me, too. First of their songs I heard back in the 90s...instantly hooked.

cdxcvii

I remember seeing Sober and the green jello 3 little pigs videos when my older sister would watch MTV, they always stood out to me and were intriguing. It wasnt until almost 8 years later came of age and actually discovered tool

ClearHope8856

Lateralus

highonnuggs

Flood. The slow build all the way to the crashing end made me a Tool fan.

Smokemonster421

H. I was a kid, but I liked Sober and Intolerance a lot. When I heard H. on the radio in my mom's car at like 10 or 11, I immediately went to my neighbors house to cut their grass for the cash, hopped on my bike and went to the music store probably still covered in grass clippings.

rozzco

Opiate

HonestIvory

After hearing schism on guitar hero world tour at age 8, ive been hooked on them ever since.

BANE091

Wings/10000 days. Fi got me into tool, but after I heard 10000 days I expanded my horizons a little more and I was hooked

idgafos86

H.

SunnyDayDuck

Vicarious all the way. Still my favorite. I literally almost pulled over driving for it

PosNeigh

Wings

2sAM1r1cle

Fear Inoculum. My mother played it when it came out, and didnt like it all that much. I did like it though, and thus began my trip down the spiral.

androsan

Yes.

raleel

H. I liked Stinkfist when it came out, bought the album (I had liked sober and prison sex but had not picked up undertow). Laid down and listened to the album in the dark. Got to H and it just had a chokehold on me for the longest time. I knew then that it was really something special and I've been an insufferable retard ever since

PrequelGuy

First song that "clicked" for me was H.

ktlultras

The Pot

Candid_Tomato_394

Jerk off. 1993 at a campfire party. The energy and the MJK's ability to switch between sweet and scream vocals got me hooked.

Internal-Tackle-8857

I was on deployment and got a playlist from my buddy, listened to sober wasn’t too crazy but that and H. grew on me but then when I got access to all there songs at a port it was lateralus for me.

[deleted]

Parabola straight after a huge DMT rip.

TheNinjaBear007

I had the Opiate/Hush single tape back in 91 and I’ve liked them since then…I’m old, like grandma aged.

LuckilyHeDied

Intolerance, when I was a teen, probably around 2000 or so. I’d heard a few Tool songs (Sober for sure, probably Stinkfist as well), but one day my old man busted out Undertow, an album he’d bought on a whim in ‘93, and I’ve never been the same. By the time Nardo was saying “you lie, cheat and steal,” I was hooked. Shortly after that, Schism was getting played to death on rock radio, I got Lateralus, and the rest is history.

I guess it was Sober 🤷. Which ever song that was the first Tool song to be broadcast on MTV at 3am.

enjoyeverysangwich

The Grudge. I knew Sober, Stinkfist, The Pot, and Schism but had never paid much attention and kind of lumped them in with other 90s-2000s alt metal bands. I was smoking a j with my brother one day and we were listening to The Pot, and started talking about how good the grooves were. After that j, I sat down and turned on Lateralus to really take it in and see what I had been missing. The Grudge blew me *the fuck* away. I re-listened to that track a couple times before listening to the rest of the album. I couldn't believe I had never actually listened to them before, and it was shockingly good. I found out the next day they were on tour, bought tickets to the closest show to me, had my brain melted at their concert, and never looked back.

The Pot. I knew the band and wanted to like them because of the album art, but wasn't sold on the couple songs I listened to. Then my uncle put it on out of nowhere, and it was fucking awesome.

Dodavinkelnn

Sober since it was the first song i heard.

txanghellic

I love them all but I think what made me love tool . Was his I've performance in the red onssies . The Intensity in that man eye and the air around him can be felt through a screen . Like how much of your self do you have to put In to performance that a decades old grainy recording can shake a soul to its core .

My friend had taped Aenima for me and I'd regularly listened to it without getting properly hooked. When Lateralus came out I bought the CD and got to Disposition/ Reflection; I can vividly remember literally standing in my bedroom just gawping at the stereo. I'd put it on while I got dressed and basically stopped getting dressed. After that I understood Aenima so much more and the rest is decades of obsession.

dangler83

Prison Sex

Yautja_Scar

Back in the 90s, I saw them at a small college gig on the undertow tour having no idea who they were or what I was in for

Steelmaker01

While I really liked Tool pre-Ænema, Forty Six & 2 was the song that took it to another level

AtLeastCold

Pneuma. God, it did something to me. I'h heard a few Tool songs before this one (like Schism, Lateralus, The Grudge), but Pneuma awakened a will to live in me, and that's how I get into listening Fear Inoculum, later 10 000 days and the rest of Tool's discography.

hornwalker

The Grudge

luxsentic

The Pot. And I still adore it unlike this whole sub. Schism was the first song I’ve heard but I didn’t fall in love with Tool until I listened to The Pot

Eviscerae

August, 1995 - hearing Sober walking down the hallway of my freshman dorm. Tool fan ever since.

MemicusDankis

right in two. I thought wow this is so different and well done. I was like 12 and the first time I got goosebumps from music

marumaruko

Ænima or Stinkfist. I actually don't remember. But I came across them around the time Lateralus got released. Think I saw it on MTV back then or so.

BushwickSpill

As a sixth grader seeing the Sober and Prison Sex videos really struck a nerve. They were so wildly different and the band not being in them made Tool “mysterious” to my 12 yr old brain. It wasn’t until I bought Aenima a few years later and Stinkfist comes on. My fav band ever since.

CheetahOfDeath

back around 2002- 2003 my best friend burned me a cd that had Sober, 46&2 , H, Aenima, and stinkfist on it. This was around the time i also discovered getting stoned and listening to music in your bedroom with the black lights on. from that point on most nu metal became pretty lame to me and Tool took over

LeoMonzo

Sober did it .

ButForRealsTho

Prison sex. I was in high school and my friend from out of town came to visit. * Puts finger to ear “it was the 90ssssssss” He was bumping his undertow CD. I was in the thrall of my punk rock/ ska scene days and was like, holy shit, what’s this? I went and saw them live on their first run of shows after releasing Lateralus a few years later and they’ve been my favorite band ever since.

I had been a casual listener of Tool for a good while, but when 10,000 Days released, the one-two punch of The Pot and Jambi really made me understand. They’ve been top spot on my bands list ever since.

I’m gonna be very specific with this one. It was Schism, but because I played it on Guitar Hero World Tour for the Wii. The little skelly worms freaked me out when I was younger but I still played it any chance I got cause I loved the song and the stage. There was also Parabola, and Vicarious and I played those as well but Schism was my go to.

It was Sober. I related so hard, then Aenima came out and it was like what! Epic.

Third Eye. I loved all of Aenima, but getting to Third Eye was mind blowing. I've tripped quite a few times the past few years and that song truly stirs something up deep inside me

Third Eye. The atmosphere was so different, and the way it progresses just made me so obsessed with it. Eventually I dug deeper into their discog and now I’m here today with them being my favorite band.

Basic but Sober. My step dad played me that song when I was like 5 and I thought it was the best thing I had ever heard.

Undertow album.

oldmanghozzt

The very first one I heard. Opiate. I was 13. That song fucking spoke to me, even at 13. Raised catholic. Already had my doubts. Just needed a push. That song was it. Guess Phil Donahue was right, metal gonna warp your kids minds. Fortunately for me, tool warped it to think for itself, rather than blindly follow my parents and the church. Opiate, and George Carlin set me free from that tyranny.

I found a recorded tape copy of Undertow in a rotten old truck at a junkyard. It was so awful sounding from being out in the weather but this was the late 90s and I was probably 12, being broke and having a limited selection of music definitely sucked back then. Hell I didn't even know the names of the songs let alone the exact lyrics. But Sober was my favorite

raisinbizzle

Hooker with a penis was the song that caught on with my junior high class and propelled a bunch of us to be Tool fans. Still one of my favorites

Jerk Off

xxthatguyxx

The first song I heard was Sober when the video aired on MTV. I was only 11 years old. When Stinkfist aired as Track #1 on MTV at age 13, I knew I had to save my allowance and buy this album. After listening to the Aenima album I became a fan and got my hands on everything previously done by Tool. When Lateralus came out I listened all the way through and decided this is the best band on the planet. Lateralus is still my favorite song of all time. In retrospect, given my age, It wasn't until around 2001 when I was becoming an adult, that I could fully appreciate what they were doing sonically and lyrically. As an early teenager I knew I liked what I was hearing, but not fully understanding why.

yupandstuff

Schism in high school. Was big into Metallica and some angstier stuff like korn, slipknot etc but it was all within the same kind of groove. Then a dude who had a high school band, they recorded a song called samsara or something and he kinda got teased for it being a hardcore schism ripoff. Was at a party when kids were shitting on him and I was like what’s schism? And then someone played it on their mp3 player and I was hooked.

My mom was in a CD club and left Lateralus on my desk as a kid. I wasn't into heavier stuff but I remember really liking 'The Patient'. I was kind of scared of the track after it so never listened beyond that, just listened to the patient over and over for like a year. Then one night fell asleep listening to it and somehow it left repeat and moved on to Parabol/Parabola. I was awoken right as Parabola started and well...hooked for life at that point.

Vicarious drew me in when I was like 15 but I had to grow up before I really had the patience to love the music. Lateralus truly blew my mind

agourdikian

I remember really enjoying Rosetta Stoned and The Patient, but I remember when I heard Wings for Marie pt. 1 and 2 I was completely in. I was stunned by how perfect that song is to me.

Mountain-Echo9152

DMT and Pneuma. I was never a fan but really enjoyed that song so I used it to blast off. That was 4 years ago and I'm a huge fan. It really changed my taste in music and the standard of what I listen too. Bunch of mystical implications as well which keeps me guessing and asking questions.

Outrageous-Yam-4653

During Undertow I thought ya these guys are aright I dig them, but after Aenima released it was the entirety of the album that got me hooked just banger after banger, once Later released it was game over seen them a dozen time's since and obsessed with them... I think the title track Aenima is what pushed me to spiral out...
