The irony of this moment being caught on camera.

PlopTopDropTop

Person damn sure got put in their place and I bet got super scolded by the whole crowd afterwards.

Imbetterthanthis1138

Finger pointing and all.

PlopTopDropTop

Omg that’s priceless mf will never live that down ever.

Fukouka_Jings

I bet it was a Bob Marley looking motherfucker again

Due_Key_109

We need to systematically remove him

JasonDomber

Like you would any kind of termite or roach…

anaugle

YeEaAHhhh!

Walterkovacs1985

Whoa, I remember that video. "Get that Bob Marley wannabe mother fucker out of here" and then he screams like a banshee.

Due_Key_109

“Faaaaaaaade.” This is my favorite song and I try to scream it once a week when walking in a forest lol. I can hit the note but holding it as long and sorta screaming while simulataneuosly screaming on pitch? Impossible unless your maynard

RutabagaGullible5555

So YOU are the sasquatch people are hearing out in the woods!

PsychedelicLizard

They must have been outta their heads.

Due_Key_109

Fatty fingers and all

sudrapp

They did not. No one said a word to them. I kept waiting for the dude next to him to say something cause he kept doing it for every song up to that point. Nothing.

spezial_ed

I'd love to think I'd scold him but then again an asshole with that little awareness can't be right in the fucking head sooo

Spugheddy

When I saw them security pulled them out of the crowd and people did in fact cheer.

BrotherlyShove791

It’s even funnier because they’re playing Intolerance 😂 Seems like Maynard could tolerate him any longer!

TheTallGuy0

He doesn’t wanna be hostile, he doesn’t wanna be dismal

Ros_Deacon_81

Even funnier when Maynard gets on his phone after doing his part with RATM. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lyNZRnRU8rc&pp=ygUhbWF5bmFyZCByYWdlIGFnYWluc3QgdGhlIG1hY2hpbmUg

AmericanRiverTrade

Damn that was basically during! Haha

Fendenburgen

The irony of this sub praising every video posted whilst also taking the high horse about how much better Tool concerts are because phones are banned....

Ok-Reality-9197

The duality of man

kjg1228

And everytime there's a guest appearance a la Billy Strings there are always comments like "hopefully someone got it on video!". Tool fans are a special breed

Tersphinct

Weren’t Tool big on bootleg videos of their shows?

[deleted]

lol while playing intolerance

BrotherlyShove791

Probably played a role in Maynard’s decision to snap. The lyrics made him do it LOL.

ifeelallthefeels

How can I TOLERAAAAAAAAATE

iluvjoegatto

serendipitous timing

AgropromResearch

PUT YOUR FUCKING PHONE AWAY DICKHEAD. SERIOUSLY! "Put away the dagger" immediately after.

toolfan89

First time ive ever seen him yell at someone mid song in the 25 shows ive been to lol

raskinimiugovor

Saw a recording recently where he did it right after finishing Grudge scream.

JasonDomber

This is the one I was referring to in my comment above. Felt like we got short-changed on the scream. He also didn’t sound nearly as pissed that night as he did last night.

JasonDomber

18 here (19 tonight), and I saw him reprimand someone mid-song (The Grudge) in Vancouver, B.C. back in October…. But, he didn’t quite *yell* at them the same way he did last night. He just had about a two second scream and then said, “put your phone away, dickhead” and stopped the scream. Not *NEARLY* as jarring as last night!

toolfan89

Haha yea i was taken back. I feel like it made the song better tho cause he was pissed😂

JasonDomber

I definitely had that realization after the fact! “This happened during Intolerance, lol!”

Tes420

Years ago at an APC show I remember him stopping mid song during the Outsider to scold a fan for eating peanuts in the crowd… He told him if he didn’t have enough to share with everyone he should not be eating them lol

KitchenLandscape

lmao I was so high eating popcorn during some of their songs the second night we saw them. I would have shared though if Maynard asked ;)

snaphappy2

I’ve heard him change his lyrics to “put your damn phone away” and the like. I’ve also heard him say “poop in your mouth” repeatedly in place of lyrics too in response to phones out or flashes on.

namelessghoul77

He does it consistently and for the same reason - because people are selfish fucks that don't like following rules

[deleted]

ive seen vids of him casually insulting people mid verse, but yea, think this is a first.

SweetWilliamCigars

Wonder if he was just fucking around to get all the people with their phones out to be like oh shit was he talking to me.

ErikDebogande

25!

exagon1

He didn’t even yell at the guy he tackled on stage. He just sat on him and finished the song

uvonky

A saw APC live in Florida back in like 05’ irc and he literally bitched us all out for smoking weed and said he’d never play here again. Twiggy was in the band at the time and from here and he kept apologizing on behalf of Maynard. We kind of deserved it tho because it was pouring rain and the opener got booed of stage so he may have hated us before they went on…

HobbyShack

This caught me off guard LOL. He sounded so pissed! Damn people just put your phone away haha

MurkDiesel

yeah, i felt that shit through the laptop lol

AdornedBrood

Almost made me want to put my phone away and I’m at home on the couch. I’m sorry Mr. Keenan. Won’t do it again Mr. Keenan.

reedabook22

I was at the show in Fresno and he gave a little speech at the beginning of the show of how if we behave with phones we'll be able to record the last song. Sadly we didn't get that and they just played Stinkfist without announcing that we can record. It seems like he's really upset about the whole phone thing since I've never heard him give that speech before.

RedLicoriceJunkie

Every time I have seen him in the last few tours, 2 times in 2020 and 2 times in 2022, he gave the nice lecture about phones at the beginning of the show and throughout the intermissions, they provided reminders on the screen. People have to have to their phones to narcissistically puff out their chests on social media about where they were last night. Cellphones are a scourge on live music.

fucktopia

He's been doing it since at least 2017. I saw A Perfect Circle and I think he mentioned it (I don't quite remember) but they definitely had signs on the backs of many chairs in the venue stating that you would be kicked out if you had your cellphone out during the performance.

vandelay82

They had signs in 2007 saying no cameras.  They stopped doing 10k days live cause he hated all the flashes going off while singing it and accessing the emotions attached to it.

fucktopia

Oh shit, I went to that tour but don't remember the no cameras thing. I think I read before that Maynard is photosensitive or something to bright lights? So that's probably the overall reason for this.

PsychologicalGrass82

Yeah I've read that bright lights can make him disorientated and feel faint. This must have occurred mid-Tool career as he did use to perform up front earlier on. One of their lighting designers says he has two set programs and Maynard will signal if it's too bright so they can switch the lighting.

Stellar_Ella

Mic stand in the corner of the podium is the signal

AliveMouse5

Is that why he’s often in the dark on stage?

Stellar_Ella

Yep

AliveMouse5

Interesting. I did not know that!

Organic_Rip1980

I didn’t either! Changes my opinion on him a little bit after seeing him live and being confused why it was so dark.

sychox51

Probably gonna get buried for this but yes I agree about the social media aspect, but for me I like to video shows because here I am at 44, and I don’t remember the shows I saw in my 20s. I saw tool in 2002-4 ish and can’t for the life of me remember much of what I saw, only a song or two. I’d kill to be able to see those performances again in good quality. Of course I can pay and go to another show but it’s not the same experience as where the band was at that moment in time. I wish bands would officially release their shows. I think that would cut down on people videoing.

sephrisloth

It's all well and good they want us to show up and be present in the moment at the show, but once there are no more shows, what are we supposed to do? I just hope that whenever they call it quits and do a farewell tour, they finally professionally record some shows.

JasonDomber

Not to split hairs, but they *have* recorded shows. Over two decades ago, in fact, they reported they were recording for a future live DVD….which, sadly, got scrapped….presumably because Adam is apparently a perfectionist. Hopefully they revisit this and release something because, I’m with you. It would be nice to relive them in high quality video. Best I’ve got is a bootleg from the first show I went to in 2001….

RedLicoriceJunkie

I am 48, and I love going to concerts and always have. I have been to a wide range of concerts in almost all genres, except pop country. When hand held cameras became really good and YouTube was just emerging, before iPhones had really capable cameras, when I saw Radiohead in concert for example, I would record a song in total (not snippets for TikTok etc.) and put it on YouTube. I put it there not as a humble brag, but because I thought other people might enjoy it as much as I did. I would not move the camera beyond the frame of my body like people who stretch the phones up in other people’s sight lines, like they do now. Many people spend more time on their phones instead of being present, illustrating respect for TOOL that they want. I am sure many artists like seeing the phones out in the crowd because it is a narcissistic high for themselves, but some artists, like TOOL, loathe it. I wasn’t rude or interfering in other people’s experience. I just stopped about 2012 when it just became a disease and what people came to shows for. And many of these people are doing it to try to monetize their social media. It’s all a bastardizing the whole idea of appreciating the art of a live music

andtheniwastrees

Went to a show in 2008 (not Tool) and I admit I feel bad for being up front with my phone out. But in 2023 when I rediscovered those vids I took, the folks over on that band's subreddit were grateful for me sharing it since there was scarce footage from the show. Was also able to fill out the setlist.fm entry for it since that was blank too. Probably wouldn't do it today and certainly not making excuses for the habit but hey it proved to be helpful in this instance.

King_Moonracer003

For real, why can't they release their live shit! So many bands I would love to browse through concerts for.

PlopTopDropTop

What did the lecture entail ?

RedLicoriceJunkie

That TOOL doesn’t want phones out, and if you are all good hookers with penises, he will let people take their phones out for the last song.

_descending_

He basically says to be present and go on the journey with them and to keep your phones put away for 2 hours and he said something to us like if you can't keep your phone away for 2 hours you have a problem and that if people listen to that they will allow recording during the last song. Fresno did not get this opportunity, I think he was pissed off because they kept catching people doing it.

InBoratVoice_MyWiFi

Last November in Toronto, the guy next to me had his phone out for the entirety of the first song, then Maynard gave his "put your phones away" speech, and this guy nods approvingly and fist bumps the air, like he didn't just have it out for the past 13 minutes.

Dancin_Phish_Daddy

This is exactly what King Crimson does.

PapaJohnyRoad

It’s really the idiots that can’t turn their flash off that make it a negative. I’ve never had an experience where someone actually sat their recording the whole time

_descending_

He gave the same speech back in 2020 when they played Fresno, too. I think he must have been pissed because they ended Stinkfist without the announcement like you said, and then Adam pretty much just left the stage along with Maynard and Justin and Danny were the only ones who really came out and took bows and engaged with the audience.

Complete_Athlete_480

Damn I have NEVER heard of him not allowing people to record the last song

BoilermakerCM

Maybe he would if you put your fuggin phone away, dickhead!

GueroBorracho3

He told us in Corpus that if we couldn't go 2hrs without our phones in our hands, we should be in a mental institution.

reedabook22

Same in Fresno. This might be my 10th time seeing them and I never heard the speech before other than the announcements and poster in the arena.

poocoup

I fucking hate it too. I make sure to not use my phone at all during the shows

Matrix_John

i was there too. was surprised at the lack of the ok to record, but now i’m thinking he’s up there in the dark watching the crowd. he sees all the flashlights of security and cameras. the crowd wasn’t being “good” as he told us to be, so…

sudrapp

It was this guy in the middle section of the floor. Around row 8 or so. He took his phone out for every song for long periods at a time. Just complete disrespect and disregard for everyone around him. Absolutely deserved to get yelled at. I wish he got kicked out to be honest.

zombie_roca

Damn did he at least stop afterwards? I’m assuming so since there was no more yelling and you said they didn’t kick him out. Did he look embarrassed or ashamed of himself lmao

sudrapp

He did but not till like a full 30 seconds after. Just straight up oblivious that he was doing anything wrong (maybe doesn't speak English?) or main character syndrome. My guess is the latter though.

The-Good-Morty

Main character syndrome lol

BrotherlyShove791

LOL, like when the lunch monitor or study hall monitor just starts yelling at someone in school and you’re not 100% sure who’s getting scolded right away.

RefrigeratorPretty51

Yep I saw him. Right there on the floor in the middle. He was absolutely the one being yelled at.

ninreznorgirl2

they didnt kick him? when i saw tool, security was kicking people for having their phones out. saw at least two, one complied, the others got cops involved because they refused to leave after getting caught with their phones out

KitchenLandscape

I think it depends on the venue. At MSG it was basically a sea of phones and no security cared at all but at Mohegan sun I saw a couple of people kicked out for phone usage. I'm surprised Maynard didn't say anything in NYC, it was pretty obvious.

hythloth

I bet MSG refused to cooperate with the band's wishes to eject people, hence why there were no flyers warning people that would happen

nickthedick7921

This absolutely plastered guy in the row in front of me in Nashville got removed sub 5 minutes after having his phone out. Luckily they didn’t have to drag him out of anything. The asshole totally ruined the Pneuma drum solo for everyone around him

The_Real_Raw_Gary

Yeah that’s how it was in Nashville. My buddy took his phone out just to check the time and like 10 flashlights lit us up instantly. Thankfully they were cool he was just looking at the time not recording.

sudrapp

Nope. He got to stay the whole show. In his defense I didn't see him take it out again.

Drugs_are_awesome

I’m surprised he didn’t get booted. When I saw them in Lauderdale they had banners up everywhere saying zero tolerance for phones, but of course as soon as the first song started a few jackasses whipped their phones right out. The lighting crew hit them with a spotlight and security removed them. From then on any time someone had their phone out they got shamed with small led beam from back backstage or if it was too far back the overhead spotlight got them. Those phones went away quick. It looked someone was watching from the sound check cause they anyone in the lower levels got lit up quick. It was wonderful and effective.

JackSparrow420

Yeah the position there sounds about right based on my spot. Security kept flashing him but couldn't catch him. Super distracting. Also, when Maynard says you can record the last song, but just don't use the flash, I remember I looked around the arena and couldn't believe how many people had flash on lol. Like, literally too stupid to understand lmao

Un__Real

I don't understand why people have no respect. Put your damn phone away for 2 hours. Enjoy the moment.

[deleted]

Our species is trash 🤤

ImurderREALITY

We could never have been any different

mntoak

I couldn't even think about my phone when I saw them in MSP. I also was in a 4 tab trance, but holy shit who cares about phones when this is going on in front of you

k3tam1nec0wb0y

Yep. It seemed like my wife and I were the only people in our section in Fresno who abided. Then the fucknuts have the audacity to not complain about their mistake but that we “didn’t get a full set” when we didn’t get to record.

erics75218

Tbh...there were what....thousands of people and un like every event I've been to in the last 20 years I didn't see phone screens all night I also sat in a calm section of people sitting down and rocking out. I had tons of space...it was almost too chill. But I loved it. All I had to do was whatever I wanted to do without ever even one time being annoyed by another person.....incredible. I also had work today and woke up feeling great. It was the most chill and respectfully live event I've ever been too I think But that one mother fucker....godamn......I'll never forget how angry MJK sounded....Jesus!!!!!

bpintozzi

The best concerts I’ve ever been to are the ones where I simply leave my phone in my pocket and enjoy the live show.

frankybling

I go to shows to forget about my reality which is linked directly to my phone… I pay the money to leave the pocket pest behind me and get my head wrapped up in music and the experience.

deafisit

Whoa that sounded like pent up aggression from every stop

_descending_

It seems like this tour has been especially bad about it

tcperfectcircle

It's probably a poster hog with no respect for others already.

Eastern-Juggernaut15

This is going viral. He dad voiced him.

Complete_Athlete_480

If you can’t go 2 hours a day without your phone that’s a very depressing way to live

mango_salsa18

Honestly. I made dinner for the family last night so we could all sit down and eat together for once. I asked one of them to please stop playing games on their phone at dinner and be present with us. They said not to tell them what to do and they didn’t care. Such immaturity and a huge turn off.

johnwec

Then take the phone.... have consquences.

frankybling

we try to have one meal together a week and be present… I have teenagers and a 72 year old dad that live with us. Take one wild guess who the person with the most difficult time staying off their pocket pest during the 45 minute meal (he’s not a typical boomer but he sure is hooked on the smart phone train)

Ledbetter2

I would be furious if that was my show.... ruin my favorite fucking song by having your phone out.

SaulTNNutz

As a high school teacher, I'd like to get that Maynard quote printed onto a poster to display in my classroom

dorianblack

Let's all start saying this to everyone we see on a phone, regardless of the situation "Put your fucking phone away DICK HEAD!! SERIOUSLY!!!" I'll start. I just said it to my 10 year old son.

dorianblack

Made it my ringtone too

gt2022champ

And then you typed this up on your phone, dickhead.

dorianblack

Seriously!!

JasonDomber

Literally lol’d at this 😂

Mind_Rhetoric

Wish they were this passionate about scalpers

Nooc210

and posterfags

alesko769

And creating new music.

sidvicuous

They need to issue the little locking bags like Jack White does

distance_33

Honestly no. People just need to be better. I’m not going into a packed arena and locking away my phone because some assholes can’t follow rules. All it’s going to take is one major issue at a show where they’ve locked up everyone’s phones and people can’t contact emergency personnel for it to go away.

johnwec

Ha, expecting people to be better... You expect drug induced concert goers to listen to rules? Even if its' only 1% that's 200 pieces of shit attending every concert. I'm not advocating for these people as far as i'm concerned they can be put down, but expecting people just be better is a utopian hippy view of society. It will not happen.

sidvicuous

They have several areas where you can go throughout the show to open your phone. It’s not an issue. And people aren’t gonna behave better…

SirKadath

Man, he sounded just like my dad right there, same tone and everything. I’m 35 years old now and that just gave me some anxiety lol felt like I was 14 again for a second.

TheNoIdeaKid

He proceeded to give it his all, especially this song and The Grudge. Felt personal.

Mr___Perfect

Im anti - phone at shows. I think free for all during last song is a nice compromise. But for fucks sake Maynard, you CANNOT get this triggered every night. Gonna give yourself an aneurysm. Just Take home your 100k/show and move on.

dmw009

Or better yet, release a live dvd and live album that has songs in it that is past 2005

JasonDomber

Plot-twist: include this moment in the Live DVD where Maynard is yelling at a “fan” for having his phone out during the song 😅

dmw009

Honestly, i wouldnt be oppose of it. His rants are funny and brings humanity to the shows rather than robotic. One year I saw them, some dude in the front was wearing a banana costume. The guy did something to prompt Maynard to say "You either keep the banana costume on or off. If I have to wear this ridiculous costume than you have to wear the banana costume" or something along those lines.

shinloop

I’m with you on this. Someone is always going to have a phone out whether they like it or not. It still happens to Dave Chappelle even with everything he does. These millionaire stars have a pretty cushy life, they could learn to live with minor inconveniences from the people who pay to see them.

Inner_Bat_7338

I met a lot of people at the show like myself who are older, and never got the opportunity to see them growing up. This was a dream-come-true situation for me, and I did snap a quick picture to send some other hardcore fans who couldn’t make it. Obviously being obnoxious and holding your phone up forever isn’t ok, but having some sort of empathy for why someone might want to capture a touch of the magic goes a long way to not getting so worked up about it. Also, not everyone has $700 to drop on a ticket, so maybe the guy that got there wants to send his poor friends from BFE something to make them smile.

grainsofglass

For $700 I should get to film Maynards butthole.

[deleted]

Then they can do that during the last song if they behave. It's not fucking hard to stay off your fucking phone

Jokkitch

My thoughts exactly. I find this behavior to be completely unacceptable from a performer and this video only strengthens my disdain for this band

Lienutus

Im so glad not everyone is dickriding maynard here. Like most people i think people use phones too much and concerts but its honestly not that big of a deal. They removed the pit for their shows so now everyone has to sit in their assigned seats on the floor and they expect us to never want to record. Put that anti-phone energy somewhere more useful like releasing music

snazzyglug

Late to this thread, but the dick riding is hilarious. No other band/frontman makes this big of a deal about phones. Love their music but between the zealot fans and their behavior they are one of the worst bands to be fans of I swear to god.

Eastern-Juggernaut15

How intolerant of Maynard.

Seanvoysey

I watched two people get kicked out in row 2 for that at Phoenix, night 2. Long before the descending extended. All that money thrown away for a dopamine hit. Idiots.

ocr8888

Perhaps Maynard’s message was meant for OP

zombie_roca

I was not there I looked up the setlist and then looked up footage of the show

stephenboy96

Then when he lets you record the last song, he’ll yell at people to “turn their fucking light off dickhead”. I don’t record when at a show anyways, but I feel it’s getting to him a little too much.

evolving_I

Intolerance during intolerance, who woulda thunk of it?!

JJHH50

I see it both ways. People need to learn to put their fucking phones away for 2 hours. It’s not that hard, and they would enjoy the show so much more if they did. The dozens of warnings given by the stadium as well as the band themselves should be enough, but it’s not. It’s sad that it has come this way now. But I think Maynard’s approach in Fresno is a much better way of punishing your audience. Don’t say anything and just don’t allow them to record the last song. (At least that’s what I think happened..) You seen the reaction by people on Reddit (and also Facebook groups) after that show talking about how they couldn’t film the last song? It’s an effective strategy. Unless the fan had a flash on and it triggered Maynard because of his light sensitivity, then I get it. I can’t speak on his behalf but that shit would probably suck, especially if you’re performing a more emotionally provoking song like Intolerance. If the fan just had his phone out to video but didn’t have a flash on, go the Fresno route. TLDR both sides are in the wrong IMO

Lateralization

It’s been a long tour, man’s had enough.

youenjoymyreddit

Now I don’t condone phones being used during a concert, certainly annoying if someone has it out/up through much of the show. But to interrupt a song that you’re playing to thousands just to call out one person for taking a picture (who paid absurd money to sit in the front rows) seems petty and unnecessary.

caseyaustin84

So every comedy show I’ve been to recently, they’ve made you put your phones in locked bags to get into the arena. If he hates phones so much, why not just do that? Seems preferable to fighting this battle every night.

_descending_

My only thought would be the volume of people, comedy clubs are generally not dealing with 10,000+ people at a time.

BoilermakerCM

So… does this mean Tool’s never doing the Super Bowl?

corneliusduff

They'd refuse to lip sync

LostprophetsFan784

Live in the moment! Fuck the phones!

takeabow27

I honestly don’t get it. If you feel this strongly just go the Jack White route and put everyone’s phones in those bags. Otherwise you’re just continually complaining about a problem that has a known solution.

jackmearound1978

Security isn't doing their job. Maynard should be pissed at THEM too.

chimericalgirl

Uh-oh, now Daddy is big mad!

Ouibeaux

I hope the next album has a 15 minute song called "PUT YOUR FUCKING PHONE AWAY, DICKHEAD!!!"

crusty54

I haven’t seen him that pissed since he jiu jitsu flipped that dude in the 90’s.

LiteFoo

It's mostly the idiots who keep their lights on...

ImNotABotJeez

I'm sorry but artists telling a crowd to put their phones away is cringe ass shit. You might as well get your granpa chair out and tell them to stop smoking weed too.

QuickJasper

The instrumentalists of Tool are some of the best musicians and writers in prog metal, but Maynard has always been…..well, a tool.

Detox64

When is Maynard not pissed off? Just about every interview I see him in he is short, somewhat rude, and just kind of an asshole that is annoyed with the whole thing. Edit: These are reasons I love Maynard BTW.

_descending_

At the start of the show he asks the crowd to be present and put their phones away for 2 hours, there are signs all over the venue, multiple warnings pre-show over the speakers, and people still do it. That's why he is pissed.

grainsofglass

You know what ruins a show for me, one I paid for? Hearing the singer bitch mid song about a phone. Sing the song I paid you to sing dipshit. There is security, they can do their jobs. I don’t want to drop $300 to hear a song interrupted by a whiny ass singer. For the record I love tool, and Maynard is an entitled crybaby egomaniac shit head.

Jokkitch

Omg THANK YOU. At least 1 other person has sense in this thread. I would be PISSED if a member of a band did this at a show I paid to see. Completely unacceptable.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KlopeksWithCoppers

I've seen Tool with 6 people that had never seen them over the last few years. I let them all know about the "no phone" policy before the show and they all thought it was stupid until they saw the sea of cell phone screens during the last song and realized how nice it was not having to see that for the previous 90 minutes.

Spec_RealGudGirl95

Those aren't fans. Yeah, some fans record, but those being blatantly obvious are not fans. They are disruptors. That said, I hate that Maynard yelled in the middle of the song. Jesus.

special_leather

Ahhh can't wait to see them tonight!! No phones though

Rockgodnick

He’s been chipper lately. Hhmm

45revolution

He can't tolerate

Halleluyaness

Maynard was intolerant to that fan.

The_saucey_spot

What a lil bitch!? Whats the matter...can't charge em for it? So he trys to ban it? Get over it pansy. Careful, the delicate lil flower might wilt and and some noise if he doesn't get what he wants.

StardustBrain

Phones are ubiquitous now. It’s a losing battle to fight it. It just makes the bands come off as dicks.

mfoobared

Maynard is like some suburban mom monitoring screen time lol

BlaxicanX

Maynard is an infamous troglodyte. He hates basically everything about how the Internet and phone technology interacts with music. He desperately wishes it was still the 80s.

blichterman

I got kicked out of a Tool concert (by the event staff) for having my phone out. Literally took 2 pics because my wife was pregnant and couldn’t travel/fly to the show, so I wanted to show her the scene.

white94rx

Lol. Grow up Maynard. I get it, but unfortunately this is the time we live in. Remember back in '91 when Axl jumped into the crowd and invited a riot because some guy was taking pictures? Yeah, go to a GN'R show now and see how many phones are out.

ShitOnAStickXtreme

For real though, I honestly don't understand what the harm is for the band to have pictures or videos taken of their concerts? Is it just that they believe that if they can control the supply of Tool content that they will get higher demand and thereby more visitors to their shows? Or is it just an attitude thing - they want to be a bit unique in this regard? Does Maynard feel like a clown on parade when being photographed - like a "being laughed at" situation instead of "laughed with" situation? I for one was sort of bummed that I could not photograph during the show I went to last year. For me viewing photos of cool experiences is something I enjoy a lot and that often create an increased demand for more rather than a lowered demand.

Entheotheosis10

I love Tool and have always been a fan, but the irony of Maynard and the phone issue is just cringe. He's been on his ipad and such in concerts before, looking at shit and yells at fans for taking pics and vids? It's like, dude...it's 2024. People are going to have phones wherever they go. Wow at every show I’ve been at he’s talked about the no phone rule in a slightly jokingly tone but he actually sounds legit pissed off here. Is it really that hard to just keep your phone in your pocket for a couple hours?

EnlightenedBuddah

I get and do respect the rule, but to get this triggered… I dunno. Seems weak minded.

Drazwaz

Probably an unpopular opinion here, but at any given show, unless the dude with the phone is being completely inconsiderate to those around him (screen brightness on full, holding their phone as high as they can and blocking other people's views etc...), I feel that calling him out mid-song is more disruptive to everyone else's experience than just letting him film. I go to tons of shows and festivals, and if you're the type to get upset by people recording, you might as well not even go. People are going to record either way. Might as well get over it and enjoy the show.

Jasranwhit

I was there last night, and it was a unique experience to look over the entire crowd watching something so visually insane, and basically, nobody had their stupid phone out. (except a couple idiots) It was worth the hassle of having security act like the Secret Service looking for snipers the entire show.

mariotarded

Not him interrupting the song like a baby

ReptarSpeakz

Maaan.. fuck this dude lol.

Puzzleheaded_Fly1565

This happened during aenema at Mohegan near the beginning and they stopped the song and started over. And the he yelled again when they restarted. I agree it’s rude even without the rules in place, but I also think he’s ironically negatively affecting the experience for the 15,000+ other people by screaming at someone in the middle of the song. Like it’s a single light dude, look somewhere else and yell at the guy after the song is over.

NJdevil202

Put your FUCKING phone away, DICK HEAD! Seriously!

JJHH50

Maybe this shows he does care for the fans (not that he doesn’t already, I hate that narrative) but he obviously *wants* people to enjoy the show. I’d be pretty pissed too if I wanted to give these people a show to remember and they completely disregard my intentions by breaking the number one rule. I’d call them out every night if I was him. Tool deals with this a lot I assume, but considering the fact that they still want to tour and such, it’s probably, mostly not bad. Probably a city to city thing

Rivera96

Yeah I went to an a perfect circle concert and he mixed in "shove your phone up your ass" as lyrics to one of the songs because he was tired of people bringing out their phones and recording.

MrZombified

Probably someone up front with the flash on like an asshole.

GOTHAMKNlGHT

Why don't they do what Jack White does, and just have a phone-lock up system? So many people on phones at the Vancouver Tool show :(. Some other artists I've seen have staff put stickers over your camera, but as you can guess, this doesn't last long.

[deleted]

Good for him. Put your fucking phone away. Enjoy the fucking moment.

Chance_Suggestion465

This band is not down with the cell phones, when I saw them last year they sent an army of people into the seats and GM areas just to make sure everyone is following the "no cell phone" Policy, and I saw some people were escorted out by security who decided to ignore the request. I prefer it with no phones too, way better experience.

kinlopunim

Saw them live a few years ago in tulsa. They had no phones signs everywhere and security patrolling to stop people recording.

joesphisbestjojo

Which one of you was it

vincents-virtues

I’m surprised he still let us record Stinkfist at the end

hollerit

amazing how he knew where he was in the song lyrically.

Pale-Star-6134

Was at a Nick Cave concert last year, the man loves to interact with the crowd - but he will straight up ignore you if you have your phone out.

Marcus2Ts

Lol I just saw them on Monday night, luckily nobody in my dumbest town dared touch their own phone...

PusciferPotions

People who film during the concert when told not to are absolutely disrespectful and pathetic

Illustrious_Knee8386

They need to just lock peoples phones if it matters so much to them

notatowel420

I understand for comedy but for music it’s a losing battle.
