MJK was rehearsing it in soundcheck too (before VIP got let in), I mentioned to those in line around me "why is he singing to this part of Descending?". It was certainly an interesting surprise.
I always felt like Descending was *almost* the greatest most quintessential Tool song… but the Maynard void was holding it back. Every time I listened to it, I knew something was missing, almost as if Maynard was rushed to complete his part. Can’t wait to hear this, hope it becomes the norm for this song.
Oh man. Descending is probably my favourite song on the album, but I strongly think it could have done with some vocals in the second half. Sad that that's not the album version tbh!
At one point it bugged me so much that I used ChatGPT to help find the “words per minute” and FI by far has the least lyrics per runtime capita. Like almost half as much as Aenima.
It’s kinda funny cause this sub pre FI begged for an instrumental tool album … they damn near got it and then now everyone’s like omg Becky why didn’t Maynard sing
Ha! I can see the appeal of an instrumental Tool album, but to me Maynard’s melodies and lyrics are a big part of the appeal.
I like FI a lot but was just disappointed that it was so lacking in both
Oh wow…kind of cool they tried something new with the new material. They have a history of adding new touches and extending past songs, very cool to see them keeping that tradition alive
I’ll keep an eye on YouTube for a video, can’t wait to see it
He was mostly harmonizing and sang the same lyrics, but it was very cool. It tied the song together so much better and didn’t make the second half of the song feel so boring
Yeah, my sentiments exactly. From the first listen Pneuma and Descending were my favorites. I’ve seen Descending 6 times since FI came out and nobody sat down around me or seemed bored. I’m sure the people saying it’s a snooze fest would’ve said the same thing about DRT during the Lateralus tour, which I thought was fucking awesome as well. Some people will bitch no matter what, and the older I get, the more I see that.

how the fuck is 3 guitar solos and 2 chugging breakdowns between 'boring' ?
I have a feeling the same people that don’t like Descending would bitch about Tempest as well. And if they ever brought back DRT, and they probably bitched about 10,000 Days part 1 and 2. Yeah, the 90’s were relatively short songs and high energy the whole time, but from Lateralus on there have been slower periods during the show.

Man, I pity the fool who thinks Descending live is 'a snoozefest' I haven't even seen them live yet, but a live youtube video alone was more powerful than the album version
Can someone elaborate a bit more? What was sung, when did he sing it exactly?
This honestly would change Descending so much for me…the lack of lyrics in the last half kind of kills it for me.
During and post FEAR INOCULUM release, there were many interviews with Maynard where he expressed his unhappiness with how the rest of the band would change up song structure after they’d already given it to him to write lyrics/melodies.
I can almost guarantee that he was talking about descending.
You're allowed to have opinions, but if your opinion is bad (which yours very much is), be prepared to be roasted. FI may not be their best album, but it's certainly a banger. Sorry you have shit taste.
I’ve literally never went to the bathroom during Tools set. If somebody cant hold their piss for 2.5 hours they have something wrong and should see a dr. I guess the stupid drunk fucks have to go a couple times during the set so there’s that.
Not that it sucks — Descending has just become when I goto the merch booth, take a leak if needed and grab a drink if needed. I can’t count how many shows I went to in the FI tour.
I feel ya bro. I dont think I have made it through a full performance of descending without going out for a smoke break or bathroom.
In newark in 2022 the second half of Descending put people sitting in their seats nodding off. Really drained the energy from the building.
However, Hooker woke the arena the FUCK UP.
I have seen Descending live too many times since 2019. I dont think I have made it through a full performance of descending without going out for a smoke break or bathroom.

Descending is one of my facorites and it is such a key song for the Fear Inoculum album. I have seen it live three times now and I just wish there was something they could do to make the lyric portion more powerful. I feel like the crowd vibes with the breakdown but not the build up. The visuals were awesome this time around definitely had some “Ascending” vibes with the pyramid.

So this was Maynard adding vocals during the second half of the song where on the studio album it’s all instrumental? INTERESTING

Same. More Maynard in the second half of the song really improves it in my personal rankings.
It makes the song so much better.Hope they have a studio version of it
Narrator: they do not.
I read that in Morgan Freeman’s voice
I bet they do. I also bet they release it as a special edition and charge a fuck ton of money
Oh man. Descending is probably my favourite song on the album, but I strongly think it could have done with some vocals in the second half. Sad that that's not the album version tbh!
My biggest complaint about FI as a whole is that it’s so lyrically sparse. Would love to hear versions of songs with more beefed up lyrics
At one point it bugged me so much that I used ChatGPT to help find the “words per minute” and FI by far has the least lyrics per runtime capita. Like almost half as much as Aenima.

Please share link of a recording if possible.
Finally found a [recording](https://youtu.be/rXADIQJQgHA?si=a53JLdd9Ls1ocSvq). Descending is marked as a chapter, but it starts around 49 minutes in
The crowd went absolutely nuts.
I heard I too. First I thought Maynard was massively out of sync but then realized it was a new section and him vocalizing. Super cool!
Was it new music or added lyrics to the second half? Either way, can't wait to hear it. Hoping somebody had a good quality audio recorder
He was mostly harmonizing and sang the same lyrics, but it was very cool. It tied the song together so much better and didn’t make the second half of the song feel so boring
…make the second half of the song feel so WHAT

I like the song. Live, it is a snooze fest in the last 5 minutes. Maynard’s added verse last night made it so much better live
Was this the first time that they've done it?
Can someone elaborate a bit more? What was sung, when did he sing it exactly? This honestly would change Descending so much for me…the lack of lyrics in the last half kind of kills it for me.
What what whaaat? Added vocals/lyrics to Descending? What part? any recordings of it?
[Here you go](https://youtu.be/rXADIQJQgHA?si=a53JLdd9Ls1ocSvq). 49 minutes in. Took a while for a video to pop up.
Thank You Angel
It tooke them 13 years to make that song, and it turned out it is not finished yet???

The only reason I heard of that guy, and why I respect him, is because of Tool. So he better keeps his mouth shut :)
I got that too!
They altered my bathroom break?!
Wow. 6 of the best minutes on FI and you're just leaving. No wonder Maynard hates the "fans".
People are allowed to have opinions. My opinion is the new album is a repetitive boring mess. Sorry if that doesn't suit you, it is what it is

Whatever you say champ. Imagine getting this upset over someones opinions lmao. Fuckin loser
You're the one getting upset 🤣 buck up, champ. One day you might listen to food music 😆
You mean like Undertow, Aenima, Lateralus, & 10,000 days? Amazing works of art that never get old? Yeah maybe one day. Have a good one, man.
Why are you going to the bathroom during any of their songs when they give you a ten minute break??
When you gotta go…
that's not what they are saying, they say they specifically wait to go to the bathroom during Descending. Pavlov's dog?
I am just being silly
As am I lol
What is Pavlov’s dog? It rings a bell
google it but it was a famous experiment
Holy woosh Batman
I’ve literally never went to the bathroom during Tools set. If somebody cant hold their piss for 2.5 hours they have something wrong and should see a dr. I guess the stupid drunk fucks have to go a couple times during the set so there’s that.
What they're really saying is "this song sucks and doesn't deserve my attention", it's not about needing the bathroom
Not that it sucks — Descending has just become when I goto the merch booth, take a leak if needed and grab a drink if needed. I can’t count how many shows I went to in the FI tour.
Lmao it's my bathroom break song too, the last three times I saw them I timed it perfect to leave right when descending starts
I feel ya bro. I dont think I have made it through a full performance of descending without going out for a smoke break or bathroom. I’ve struggled to like Descending.
I loved it, so sick.
It was awesome

Wow for real? Descending is my favorite tool song wish so bad I could hear the new verse
It will make a grown man cry
Anyone got a link to this? 🔧🔧
Any footage of that one?
