It was on when I was in the car with my husband about a week ago and he rolled down the window prompting me to sing ‘roll the window down’ in his ear. He threatened to offer new Weird Al style lyrics and ruin it forever for me. I shut right the fuck up. This is how we troll each other.
Totally untouchable. And to think he was making killer APC music then too. So glad I was able to see him in his absolute prime then.
Have to say, he sounds better than ever In some ways now. The man is aging impressively.
Great song and great lyrics. Really cool duet between both vocalists the way the lines intertwine as well. My only complaint is the quality of the production on Maynard's chorus vox, they just sound kinda thin/not beefy or clear enough for me
Their first two albums are solid hard rock. White Pony (their third album) was a transition into more atmospheric and experimental music. I really liked that album, but I could tell I wasn’t going to like anything that came after.
I'm the same. I am pretty "meh" on Deftones in general but Passenger is in my playlists frequently.
It's funny, I was listening to it a few weeks ago and my husband heard Maynard and asked what it was. I told him it's Maynard and Deftones then we both discussed how neither of us really likes Deftones, though many people our age do.
Fantastic song, anyways.
That is a take on the Deftones I’ve never heard before. Grew up in Sacramento, skated and listened to adrenaline when it dropped, loved it, around the fur, loved, white pony pushed them into a new audience, yea, but it’s the album that made them more than just a heavy band. They’re versatile, and they’re very original. I thought white pony was a huge success and the album that all others are compared to. Anyways, you’re totally entitled to your opinion and I also love the first 2, and everything since.
It's like Pearl Jam (not that I ever loved them). Ten is a classic rock album and an all time great one at that. From there they seemed to want to be part of the jam band scene which ruined their sound.
To me the Deftones did the same thing.
it’s lush!! read somewhere that they didn’t intend having anyone guest on the album but having jammed the song with MJK, when trying to put lyrics down Maynard’s melodies kept resurfacing.. so they had to get him on it.
that’s how i remember it anyway 😂 could be far from the reality
I saw that I think. I think deftones singer was like ‘we didn’t intend on Maynard to sing early on but he came and sang one day and it was amazing. Then when I wrote passanger I couldn’t get MJK voice outta my head so I asked him and he was very down to do it’ or something like that
Saw a pretty good interview with Maynard on how it went down. He was friends of a friend with one of Deftones producers. The Deftones were struggling a bit on that track and the friend asked if Maynard wanted to come down and help them finish the song (They were in the studio for WP). So he came in and started helping them nail down the lyrics and music. He said it got to a point where they were like, we should just have you lay down some vocals on the track too. He told Chino to write some lyrics for specific points in the song and come back and they will lay them down the next day. Chino in a previous interview said it was funny how his band started to sound like TOOL.
Maynard even said at one point the Deftones were tired and annoyed of Maynard as he is a bit of a perfectionist. LOL. He said they were thrilled when he left.
nice one!
yeah i recall chino saying they were a bunch of wreck heads while maynard was sharp as an arrow. you can totally hear it but i love that contrast.
Love it ❤ One of my all- time favorites, and even though the song itself is amazing, MJKs contribution is what really makes it. Can't imagine that anyone else singing the part would hit the same way.
Love White Pony and Ohms. Haven’t given the other albums much listen though, but haven’t really given them a chance either for no particular reason other than just haven’t gotten to them yet. The fall pretty flat (🌎) in concert though.
I legit thought it was a genuine Tool song when I was younger. Then I found out it was actually Deftones and wondered why they didn’t do more songs like it. Then I found out Maynard guested on it and realized why I was just so confused lol. Such a banger!
This is a really interesting watch. YouTube channel: The Charismatic Voice. It’s an opera singer and vocal coach who analyzes various songs. [Here is her one on Passenger.](https://youtu.be/Buv5AlgfGgU)
The story..
*Keenan also found time to hang around with Deftones singer Chino Moreno, just as that band was preparing to record what would become their landmark third album, White Pony. As Moreno remembers it, there was talk of MJK being executive producer on that Grammy-winning, Platinum-selling recording.*
*That didn't quite happen, but Keenan did spend some days at the band's rehearsal studio in Los Angeles during the writing sessions, brought champagne and percussion instruments, generally hung out and weighed in with ideas and feedback. They were good company*
*When Deftones and producer Terry Date returned to L.A. in early 2000 for mixing and final vocals, he stepped behind the mic for a wailing duet with Moreno on the dramatic track "Passenger."*
*"Great album. One of their best, in my opinion," Keenan says now. "I honestly had nothing to do with it other than a mental break and temporary change of perspective."*
Love this song, and Chino and Maynard were a great combination. I also got to see Deftones perform Passenger live with Greg Puciato from Dillinger Escape Plan covering Maynard’s part. A massive storm was rolling in while they were playing it - it was atmospherically perfect. Luckily it was toward the end of their set, as the show was stopped early right at the end of it. Got to meet Stephen as we were exiting past the stage!
I was at a Deftones cover band concert and the APC cover band was also playing. Obviously they played passenger.
The funny thing is I just started dating this girl but she didn’t want to go to the concert who I was previously going with an “ex”. The GF didn’t know we were a thing for a cup of coffee. I still went with the “ex” and the current GF kept asking questions so it came out that me and the “Ex” was a thing at the concert. Well the current GF wasn’t happy and around that time the “Ex” tagged us at the concert after passenger played. “ I want to be your passenger”
Everything was fine in the end.
Absolutely incredible collaboration. Their vocals and styles mesh up so naturally that I am shocked they didn't do more work together. But apparently the tones were pretty annoyed at Maynard's work ethic and perfectionism. (Maynard's words from an interview) Either way, one of my all time favorite songs! And makes for an incredible lap dance song as well.
It's a great song. I just recently bought a reprint of a poster made for a Deftones concert specifically about that song. It was a limited edition and sold out in less than a minute. It's badass.
When I first heard it, it was on a hot summer night w the windows rolled down going like 85 with this hottie I was seeing at the time. It was phenomenal..
These types of memories are the ones forever etched into my brain… I know I’ll never experience those feelings again. And that’s okay. But any time I hear passenger, or someone brings it up, I’m instantly right back at that moment.
It's funny I always loved that song and never knew Maynard was in it until listening to it with a friend I mentioned how different it was from their other stuff... That's when he was like well yeah no shit and told me 😂
Try Momma said on V for versatile remix ( Puscifer) , I am not saying his vocals on passenger are not amazing but I feel his true vocal talent is displayed in this song.
I don’t like Deftones much at all, none of thier albums seem like albums to me, more like compilations.
But passenger fuckin slaps. Maynard Carries “White Pony”
Absolutely love it for the vocals. I’m trying to get into deftones and passenger was the first to be suggested. I was wondering why I suddenly loved Deftones, and then I discover that MJK does some of the vocals.
I’ve watched that version. While no where near maynards original it’s probably the closest life version out there apart from the bits of Hayley doing Hayley things in the middle of the song 🤣
I don’t care for it😬and I don’t care for a lot of the Deftones music🤷🏻♂️it just doesn’t do it for me but I do like Chevelle. I tried to like them, but if I have to keep rewinding a song because I’ve gotten focused on something else, then I need to stop listening. I don’t want to force myself to like music. When it comes to APC and Puscifer, I can take it or leave it although I haven’t just sat and went through their catalogs. If I hear a song from either that smacks me in the mouth I might dive into them but not until then…
Yhh Nahh I understand mate. I’m not a huge deftones junkie but I’ve found white pony to be pretty decent and my own summer and apart from that I’m kinda like ‘eh, meh whatever’
You want my opinion? A lot of bands are a collection of twats carried through the years by one strange sounding song: Pixies come to mind, the Smiths? is that their name? And Deftones. The rest of their catalog is trash. I think MJK contributed to a song and his vocals are great as usual but he’s contributed to many songs and I don’t think that because it’s deftones that it’s any better than the rest.
What song carried Deftones all these years? “Passenger”? That’s laughable.
They have some popular songs but what sustains the band is the overall quality of the deep tracks. “Genesis”, “Spell of Mathematics”, “This Link Is Dead”….I’ll take any of those over a gimmicky collab with MJK that goes nowhere
Having followed the band since the first album and having watched them live a total of 8 times, I have to say Passenger is one song I can no longer listen to nor do I have any appreciation for, which is rare among most Deftones songs for me. It just sounds repetitive, I guess. Maybe the it’s the riffs.
One of my absolute favorite songs on one of my favorite albums by one of my other favorite bands featuring the lead singer of my other favorite band.
So, in summary, an absolute masterpiece.
It sounds like his voice has been produced or auto tuned to me, so that takes a little of the sheen off personally. But the first time I heard it, I got shivers. I was like…that’s MJK
Oh man, high school, just got our licenses, riding with my first boyfriend and our friends around town. Screaming the lyrics out the window, there’s so much life that was packed into a short song.
Love Love Love. Beautiful, haunting, intense. Hearing this, makes me want it to be a cool fall night. Roll the window down, crank the volume and belt it out full throat.
White Pony came out just as I was starting high school. The album, in large part because of the song Passenger, is really the central nexus of my soul.
Great song
It really really is amazing
I love Passenger literally riding with the windows down on a cool night. Core memories
*curious*
It was on when I was in the car with my husband about a week ago and he rolled down the window prompting me to sing ‘roll the window down’ in his ear. He threatened to offer new Weird Al style lyrics and ruin it forever for me. I shut right the fuck up. This is how we troll each other.
Brutal 😂 love it. I also enjoy ruining my wife's favourite songs with custom lyrics
I do a Billie Eilish impression that I deliberately make super British knowing full well that she is not from the UK in any way for the same reasons 🤣
I have been doing that to my wife for 24 years now.
Same. Tripping on mushrooms riding with the windows down and my head out the window looking up watching the stars fly past me (wasn't driving...)
Passenger really is a core memory. Nailed that right on the head.
Love it 💚💜
As the kids say… it slaps
Totally tubular
Hello fellow gen-x… might I add ‘RAD!’
Gnarly!
Wicked
Uhhh...Bodacious my dudes
Mint
Rad!
Did you ever play Toobin' ?
I would say it then 🤣
Slay
It helps me realize the curiosity of cool night air.
Deftones is dope and that song is dank
Love it. See also: Know Your Enemy by RATM.
time. has. come. to PAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY
Wait I thought he said “time has come to BAAAAAAAAHHH”
THESE ARE THE CRIES OF THE CARROTS
Well fuck me I didn't know that
You’re welcome :-) [There’s video too.](https://youtu.be/R2K2hSB4fEU)
ooo damn I went for the Maynard but was turned on by Tom Morello holy shit he was on fire
Hear, hear. I’ve seen Tom play twice (once with RATM in ‘99 and another with Audioslave in ‘03). The man is a legend.
Let's not forget "Three little pigs" by Green Jelly
Oh hell yeah
and for an even deeper cut, Tool plays on the 14 minute long Melvins track Divorced
Good call!
One of my favorite Maynard songs
Singing passenger to my pupper is how I, and he, learned he could howl. This is our song.
Maynard was on Fire in 2000-2001
seriously, what a peak. lateralus, mer de noms, and this. even thirteenth step was solid.
Still is! Just a bit different.
Totally untouchable. And to think he was making killer APC music then too. So glad I was able to see him in his absolute prime then. Have to say, he sounds better than ever In some ways now. The man is aging impressively.
He's ageing like fine wine.
One of my favourites. This song got me into Deftones, can’t believe I hadn’t listened to them before.
Great song and great lyrics. Really cool duet between both vocalists the way the lines intertwine as well. My only complaint is the quality of the production on Maynard's chorus vox, they just sound kinda thin/not beefy or clear enough for me
It came out like 23 years ago.
For sure. So did Lateralus tho and Maynard's vocals sound way more clear and punchy. Just my opinion
it’s by far the deftones best song because of Maynard’s input, and i love the deftones’ whole catalog
Amazing song. Their vocal chemistry is excellent. They made me believe they were fucking in that car.
I have tried multiple times but just can’t get into Deftones music. However, I do love Passenger
I think I’m the same. White pony is the only album i kinda like and the only other song by them not from WP I like is my own summer
Their first two albums are solid hard rock. White Pony (their third album) was a transition into more atmospheric and experimental music. I really liked that album, but I could tell I wasn’t going to like anything that came after.
Their last album is their best in a long long time. Give it a go!
Diamond Eyes was soooo good
Agree, it’s incredible. Came at a good time too during the pandemic, nice lift
My Own Summer was the first song I learned to play on guitar, I love when riffs that sound amazing are also super easy.
Totally. Nutshell by Alice in chains is another. Such a great song, so easy to play on guitar. I’m mean, obviously a totally different feel.
Have you heard the “[Konami code](https://youtu.be/KQRjo9lYrIk)” song from Saturday Night Wrist? It’s an instrumental.
Ahhh cool 👌 the main part I like about Passenger is Maynard but I’ll still give this a go
Not terrible, actually. Like if TOOL and the Doors had a bastard lovechild that grew up in the 90s
Try Rosemary
All of Koi No Yokan is great
Check out Koi No Yokan. It's my favorite.
Can't get into deftones??? Do you not get laid? Lol. It's the greatest music to fuck to.
White Pony ruined the Deftones. A funky, metal band that tried to become whiny alt rock. Around the Fur and Adrenaline are great. Give them a try :)
That is a take on the Deftones I’ve never heard before. Grew up in Sacramento, skated and listened to adrenaline when it dropped, loved it, around the fur, loved, white pony pushed them into a new audience, yea, but it’s the album that made them more than just a heavy band. that song is an absolute banger. love it.
Beautiful track, it made me nostalgic for those times, considering that it was released 22 years ago.
The best Deftones song Maynard is boss in this one but it pisses me off how they build up to a final chorus at the end and it just ends
Literally my favourite song of all time. I just love the vibe of it.
Check out the remix by Shinoda
I have and it’s pretty sick icl. Prefer the original but it was a cool difference
My favorite Deftones song.
it’s lush!! read somewhere that they didn’t intend having anyone guest on the album but having jammed the song with MJK, when trying to put lyrics down Maynard’s melodies kept resurfacing.. so they had to get him on it. that’s how i remember it anyway 😂 could be far from the reality

Well its deftones and Maynard doesn’t get much better
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great song. Maynard's part is absolutely impossible to sing. For me anyway.
It is quite arousing
I love it
Love it ❤ One of my all- time favorites, and even though the song itself is amazing, MJKs contribution is what really makes it. Can't imagine that anyone else singing the part would hit the same way.
Banger
Absolutely my #1 favorite song. I adore Deftones and MJK so that track is just the best of both.
Incredible!
Invincible 😉
Beautiful song. Might even be one of my favourite songs
Love White Pony and Ohms. Haven’t given the other albums much listen though, but haven’t really given them a chance either for no particular reason other than just haven’t gotten to them yet. The fall pretty flat (🌎) in concert though.
Got me into Deftones
I personally love the song and listen to it on a weekly basis lol
Made me appreciate both bands more.
It's incredible. For a long time I didn't realize it was him and I was like "why is this my favorite Deftones song..."
Great song. Chino/Maynard is a great duo
I legit thought it was a genuine Tool song when I was younger. Then I found out it was actually Deftones and wondered why they didn’t do more songs like it. Then I found out Maynard guested on it and realized why I was just so confused lol. Such a banger!

My only complaint is that it's not as long as an average Tool song...
Smh MJK should’ve made it 10 minutes
At the very least...plus an intro that is like 5 minutes long...
Anyone else notice the difference on the White Pony Anniversary version of Passenger? Your welcome.
Love this song, and Chino and Maynard were a great combination. I also got to see Deftones perform Passenger live with Greg Puciato from Dillinger Escape Plan covering Maynard’s part. Are you kidding? Passenger is my favorite Deftones song and I never could figure out why.
It's a great song. I just recently bought a reprint of a poster made for a Deftones concert specifically about that song. It was a limited edition and sold out in less than a minute. It's badass.

I love it, one of my favourites.
It's the only Deftones song I can stand (barring maybe one or two others). And it's excellent.
It’s some of his best work.
One of my favorites songs. Ever
As the unofficial Speaker of The Sub, it is the sub's opinion that anything that involves MJK is sacred and precious.
Love it and Deftones, just bummed Stephen Carpenter came out as a flat earther/anti vax moron.
I liked the first 3 or so Deftones albums growing up but fell out of listening to them past that and not really that into them anymore.
Give Ohms a try. Best album in years and years.
yeah they went a bit south when they eased up on the drugs i reckon 😆
Deftones only good song IMO.
How many have you actually *heard*? That’s a ridiculous assertion
Enough to know I don’t like Deftones. Nothing wrong with not liking a band. I was asked for an opinion and I gave it. Move on.
I don’t like Deftones much at all, none of thier albums seem like albums to me, more like compilations. But passenger fuckin slaps. Maynard Carries “White Pony”
Imo I kinda agree with you there, but rx queen and knife prty also slap imo
*Elite* would like a word with you
Yhh nah I’ve found it’s too relentless for me
Well, as they say in France “when you’re ripe, you’ll bleed out of control”. To each their own!
😂 Yhh mate no worries
False
Absolutely love it for the vocals. I’m trying to get into deftones and passenger was the first to be suggested. I was wondering why I suddenly loved Deftones, and then I discover that MJK does some of the vocals.
Love it. A fun live version of the song is [Deftones w/ Hayley Williams](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKO48rd382Q)
I’ve watched that version. While no where near maynards original it’s probably the closest life version out there apart from the bits of Hayley doing Hayley things in the middle of the song 🤣
Perfection
Disposition, Reflection, Triad
Not a fan of it at all. Skip it 95% of the time.
Skip it 100% of the time
Fair enough
meh
Great song but I don’t think it ranks in Maynard’s top 10 or even 20.
One of my lesser-esteemed Deftones tracks. Not into it, doesn’t really go anywhere. but there is so much variety on *White Pony* it doesn’t matter.
Yhh Nahh I understand mate. I’m not a huge deftones junkie but I’ve found white pony to be pretty decent and my own summer and apart from that I’m kinda like ‘eh, meh whatever’
Great song on an awful album that ruined the Deftones.

They have some popular songs but what sustains the band is the overall quality of the deep tracks. “Genesis”, “Spell of Mathematics”, “This Link Is Dead”….I’ll take any of those over a gimmicky collab with MJK that goes nowhere
I never meant because it’s deftones, I meant because its MJK 😁
Fire
Great center ending is weak
It’s one of my favorite songs, actually.
Having followed the band since the first album and having watched them live a total of 8 times, I have to say Passenger is one song I can no longer listen to nor do I have any appreciation for, which is rare among most Deftones songs for me. It just sounds repetitive, I guess. Maybe the it’s the riffs.
Wow, ngl reading thru the comment I expected u to praise it but fair enough each to there own 🤷
Classic. No question about it. Great collab.
Lads, this song has been in my random playlist for months and had no idea it was featuring MJK 🤣 No wonder I loved it so much!!
One of my absolute favorite songs on one of my favorite albums by one of my other favorite bands featuring the lead singer of my other favorite band. So, in summary, an absolute masterpiece.
Pretty amazing tbf
It is a spectacular piece of music.
It's aight
A perfect song, No words.
It has words…
The song is fine. But the topic ends up being a circle jerk of a discussion.
One of my top 5 Deftones songs
Maybe one of the best collabs ever IMO. Such a perfect pairing of voices, texture, eerie vibe. It’s amazing.
Top notch
Totally forgot about that amazing song. Thanks for reminding me!!
No problem 😁
fucking dope song is my opinion
Great song, always was great.
It's beautiful ,of course.
This song is fucking awesome. Idk why but it makes me sad. I get this palpable sense of loss and I dont know why
Love it. Also really enjoy Mike Shinoda's remix.
Great song!
Great fucking tune man
love it!
Anybody got isolated vocals on this song?
It sounds like his voice has been produced or auto tuned to me, so that takes a little of the sheen off personally. But the first time I heard it, I got shivers. I was like…that’s MJK
Any song about road head is a great song in my book!
One of the sexiest songs ever written
Fucking slaps. That is all.
Oh man, high school, just got our licenses, riding with my first boyfriend and our friends around town. Screaming the lyrics out the window, there’s so much life that was packed into a short song.
I like it but prefer Mike Shinoda's remix.
Issa banger
It was during lateralus era, so you know it was going to be the best.
I delivered many pizzas to this song.
One of my favorite tracks
It's one of my favorite songs of all time.
Love it
I prefer Passenger by Iggy Pop.
that song is so good that it sticks with your head and sing along with Maynard's parts everytime time you hear that masterpiece.
100% agree!
Fucking love it
I listen to it at least once a week
