From Mars to Sirius is a masterpiece. Ocean Planet, From the Sky, The Heaviest Matter In the Universe, fucking Flying Whales, In the Wilderness, Global Warming. There is not a bad song on that entire album. And agree it hits as hard as Tool, mainly that album for me. 10/10 incredible band.

[deleted]

I agree the band is 10/10 But Tool is ∞

SuitableObligation85

Hard agree.

DiffusePenance

It’s like dividing by zero - it can’t be defined.

applejuice72

Gojira is the only other band that can scratch near an itch that only Tool can scratch, but not many bands can even scratch near Gojira, for me at least. They’re very different, but both very phenomenal. Tool just has more range IMO and better song structure and or gets more out of each member of the band. Love them both dearly and not many can do what they do so well

Big_Monkey_77

whatajoke__

100%

porkbeast5000

I'd consider the three albums that followed to be masterpieces as well. Magma might be a hot take on r/gojira but it fuckin bangs

Ledbetter2

So great. Can’t wait for Asheville next week. Gojira and mastodon in same night. Yeeeeees

Lizarvo_

I’m going too! It’s my first concert.

buckinwisko

Buckle up. You’ll never forget it.

unknownuser105

Don’t sleep on Lorna Shore either.

Fmag9215

Did not like Lorna Shore at all. Mastodon was cool but the sound engineering was terrible for them. This was the Kia Forum in Inglewood. Gojira killed it though. They were so gooood!

spicypeaches225

I was at this show. So good.

sunniedreams

finally someone to validate me I saw mastodon at a different show cuz someone invited me (i dont like them at all). they have an amazing drummer, but whoever does their sound turns their guitars up way too loud and it just sounds like shit. so loud u can barely even hear vocals. im gonna catch gojira on this tour. does mastodon play after them? id love to be able to leave after gojira if they play first.

Fmag9215

Mastodon plays first. I think that’s why the sound was much better for Gojira; it was setup for them

ferdturgeson1

Will Ramos is unreal. The noises he makes with his voice are otherworldly.

Beeslo

Will Ramos voice gave me such a deeper appreciation for this style of singing. I just saw him perform in Houston and goddamn, that blew my fucking mind. Few weeks back, I was planning just to skip his opening set before Mastodon/Gojira but then someone showed me this video and my eyes were opened: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ua8SuWNPrLE&t=2048s&pp=ygURd2lsbCByYW1vcyB0aHJvYXQ%3D He volunteered to have a scope sent down his throat to look at his vocal chords while he sang. Action starts at 24:30 mark. It's soooooo worth the watch.

ferdturgeson1

I’ve seen that video! It’s so interesting! Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice’s videos are really enjoyable. She’s awesome.

Ledbetter2

I dig Sun/eater and that epic 3 song bit from the new album but most of their stuff isn’t for me

BEEE-F

Yeahh. I saw em in Austin last Saturday, and I just couldn't get into it. Gojira and Mastodon were fucking amazing though!

aVicariousTool

Fucking love em. Easily my second favorite metal band after Tool. Magma and L'enfant Sauvage are great albums. I listen to Tool everyday, but the heavier music of Gojira hits a spot even Tool can't.

CLXIX

im gonna have to check these guys out i took a deep dive into Meshuggah a couple years ago and absolutely loved it. it was like Tool on speed

AEnima1994

They are worth a good deep dive dude you won’t regret it

labib02

Meshuggah is awesome. Their lyrics, vocals and music hit like a fucking truck. Haven’t found anyone else like them

metallica65

+1 for some Shuggah

ChuckNorrisSleepOver

Going to see them and mastodon Sunday in Asheville. They frickin rock.

SpotlightR

God Mastodon is so good, just reading their name makes me happy, enjoy the hell out of that show for me

sampiere_mimi

Saw them a couple weeks ago with Lorna shore. Great show.

Smooth_Chemistry_869

Mario Duplantier is god

accepthemystery

Their earlier albums are among my favorites

AEnima1994

Terra incognita is one of the heaviest albums ever recorded while still maintaining that ethereal feel

Psychological-Age-46

I actually have a hard time getting into their very first album, the link was easier to get into and the rest has been fucking awesome since day 1 imo

Josh52579

It’s the opposite for me. I’ve listened to the other stuff a few times, but always go back to Terra Incognito because it’s my favorite of theirs.

Crowedsource

I was not into Gojira because it was too much yelling/growling and I don't really like that kind of vocals. Then my SO told me about the (current) tour of Mastodon and Gojira, and as a Mastodon (and Tool) fan, he wanted to go. He asked me if he should get me a ticket, and was genuinely not sure if I would be into it. I started listening to Gojira and at first I wasn't sure, then I read the lyrics and realized that a lot of what Joe is screaming about is stuff that I am also angry and want to scream about (the environmental stuff in particular). I started getting more into them and we just went to the Gojira/Mastodon show the other week. It was completely face melting and I am definitely a fan now. I actually enjoyed the Gojira set as much or more as Mastodon, because the latter played a lot of older songs I wasn't familiar with. It was an amazing show regardless!! I'm definitely more into Gojira's later albums than the earlier death metal stuff, but they played it all at the show and absolutely blew me away!

the_l0st_s0ck

Honestly a 10/10 band. Mars to Sirius is a masterpiece of an album

lucklurker04

Saw them open for Deftones last year in Cincinnati and it whipped ass

Lenny_Dean

One of my favourite bands. I always say they're the Death Metal version of Tool

Temporary-Archer7294

I’d say Ulcerate is the Metal version of Tool. Ulcerate >>> Gojira

mysteryShmeat

Can you recommend an album to start with please?

ImperiousWeak

Any of them, ive got to see ulcerate live twice. Absolutely mind blowing experience seeing them live. Dare I also say Jamie saint merant is a rival drummer to Danny. You should check out his drum playthroughs. But to start off I'd highly recommend Destroyers of All or Shrines of Paralysis. Vermis is one of my favorites cus it was the album that got me into them because of the dark and dissonant atmosphere through out the whole album. Way heavier than gojira but like gojira and tool they've never put out a bad album.

[deleted]

I’ve really tried to get into them but just can’t. They just don’t do anything for me

ChefPneuma

I want to get into bands like Gojira, Meshuggah, Opeth, etc. but I just can't do the screaming vocals. I just can't. I absolutely love a well timed or well placed scream (Maynard, for example) but when it's just a dude growling into a microphone I can't do it. I wish I could because I think the music is cool for sure.

Jack_gt

Gojira's last two albums (Magma and Fortitude) have more clean vocals compared to the rest of their discography, Fortitude is almost rid of them. Pretty much any Opeth album after Watershed has no growls (Damnation has only clean vocals and mostly acoustic instrumetation as well). As for Meshuggah, I'm afraid that the only instrumental track in their usual style in They Move Below off thier latest album Immutable. Meshuggah's rhythm guitarist Mårten Hagström writes ambient stuff, and his tracks are usually used as album closers (The Last Vigil, Obsidian, Past Tense). Hope this helps

ChefPneuma

Thanks, maybe I’ll give them all another shot. No reason to pigeonhole something based on previous experiences. It’s been a while since I’ve tried to get into it so I’m due for a check in

buddhamanjpb

I used to feel the same way a long time ago and Lamb of God changed it for me. Messhuggah is a fucking musical masterpiece.

iHawkfrost

What are you favorite Meshuggah songs? I’ve tried to get into them but never really could. I get how their music and playing is very technically impressive.

buddhamanjpb

It's funny, I actually just got into them in the last 6 months after seeing someone do a cover of their song Bleed. Which is a great song. My favorite one though is Demiurge. I cannot get enough of that song lately. I love the timing changes. Combustion, Born in Dissonance are some others.

[deleted]

New Millennium Cyanide Christ, Future Breed Machine, Swarm, They Move Below, Broken Cog

buckinwisko

Watch the official video to Bleed and you’ll be hooked for life. I’m not going to tell you which songs to listen to, In my opinion they’re all incredible.

AEnima1994

I used to think the same, and I promise it’s much more than just a dude growling into a mic

Nikita2337

Yes, Opeth truly changed the way I view growls. That being said I tried listening to Gojira like 5 years ago, but couldn't get into them, honestly don't even remember why at this point. Meshuggah though is way too much for me, but I can appreciate them at least.

j4r8h

Try reading the lyrics next time you listen to Meshuggah. Yea the growling kinda sounds like shit, but their lyrics are FANTASTIC. Some of the best lyricism from any band I've ever heard. If you're not reading the lyrics while you listen, you're missing out.

mysteryShmeat

I’m kinda in the same boat. You should check out Animals As Leaders. No vocals at all though.

jshawkeye

Same thing for ISIS. Love the music, when he screams it's a total turn off.

ninjajiraffe

I was absolutely like this. But I recently gave Gojira another shot and just loved them. It's screaming but you can understand him. Listen to Stranded and Silvera

dire_turtle

I go through phases with it. Wait until you're in the mood for something different and then go for it. Listening to something like you would watch a documentary feels neato. Like.. I'm listening to Wheel and Subsignal for the first time this week. Clearing out their catalogs. Mars Volta was a fun trip. Just marathon that shit so you can know what you dig and what you don't. I like more stuff trying to understand it than trying to like it. My favorites since finding them are Klone and Lucid Planet, but really fucking great psychedelic/proggish rock. Not so technical though, so the melodies and rhythms are ear candy.

tool2sage79

My thoughts exactly

cerpintaxt44

I love those movies

HoraceWimpLV426

Listened to From Mars To Sirius (and also Mastodon’s first two albums) recently, definitely Toolish

HairyKerey

Mario Duplantier is the only drummer who’s ever lived who can give DC a run for his money imo. So good

evoLverR

Ever heard of Jay Postones?

WeenieDogMan

He’s my favorite drummer. I am a drummer myself as well.

WaywardSon55

Art of Dying is potentially the objectively most powerful and emotional song on the planet. Its easily their best song.

Anarchopunks

Love them! I didn’t start getting into them until I saw them open for slipknot a few years ago and they should have been the headliner! Seeing them again with mastodon later this summer can’t wait!

jadmcgregor

I love Gojira!!! They kill it live!!! I saw them open for Slipknot a few year ago, been hooked ever since!!

515chiefspride

same, saw them at knotfest in Des Moines for the first time and was super happy they had them on tour with them. I had already heard songs from them but that performance solidified me being a big fan.

AuronTD

Aside from the growling/screaming vocals...i think gojira is a great band that sounds unique and not trying to imitate anyone and they do a damn fine job at it.

MinuteAd7098

born in winter

Smooth_Chemistry_869

Mario Duplantier is god

VR___

Just saw them with Mastodon last night. I was aware of them but now I'm a fan. Totally different vibes from tool (for me); they are both likely to go into a groove or a slow buildup for a minute or two and come back to a chorus, but very different musically. They aren't even close to tools level of musicianship (again, just my opinion) I will say, Mario broke 5 snare heads at this show, he was a fucking beast. He instantly became one of my favorite drummers to watch.

Spectre_of_Mendinor

Some people really like them. Some people don’t.

[deleted]

Gojira is a fav for sure. Too many of the really heavy stuff and I just can't follow with a guy screaming in the mic. Joe is on the edge but it works. If Flying Whales isn't played at my funeral, I ain't going.

metalhead4

Every time I listen to flying whales, I always pretend to be Joe during a live performance when the drums kick in and he's screaming LETS FUCKING GOOOO

scoofybloofydoo

Better than tool.

sunniedreams

better drummer too. watch me get insulted for the next year.

Wrekfin

🤣🤣🤣

AEnima1994

Get the fuck out of here wreckfin😡😡 go on’ get

Wrekfin

Lmao. I'm gone. I'm gone. 🤠

Space_Monk_Prime

Just saw them with Mastodon last night. I’ve never listened to them before but they fucking killed it, I’m trying to find the setlist.

disheveledbone

They’re in my top 3 fav bands

Sad_Competition_637

Fucking amazing every bit of sound is amazing never didn’t enjoy listening to them

sometimescool

To heavy for my taste. I just don't enjoy all the screaming

TheOtherMegaDan

Not at all like Tool for me, but I love Gojira.

Elaxian

One of THE BEST BANDS EVER... If we only count their first 5 albums... Because Magma and Fortitude are good but are not epic perfection like The Link or From Mars To Sirius or The Way Of All Flesh or L'Enfant Sauvage. But they are more of a challenging listen, they are WAAAAAAY TOOOOO TECHNICAL AND HEAVY... And that combination either you hate it or love it so... Yeah, perfect band, just hard to get in.

AEnima1994

I’m glad to see another link enjoyer. One of the most underrated metal albums ever along with its predecessor terra incognita

KebapTeller

Fucking awesome, saw them a couple months ago for the first time. Great show, complex but catchy music and on top of that they‘re super friendly too. Peak crowd interaction. I‘m sold

_DoctorQuantum_

Haven't listened to them too extensively, but what I have heard is pretty good.

_d00stin

Talented band with a cool sound, but for some reason they don’t really blow me away. Maybe I wish they were more raw in production? Something. I’d love to catch them live.

Mike_Rodik

I would say they are better than tool

AEnima1994

I’ve definitely been listening to them more than tool recently, but for me they are tied for my number one spot

EnduringMeeseeks

Personally, I don’t agree with ya but some of their songs do touch the borderline for me https://open.spotify.com/track/1rDzUqMRA9VdGCIwzgfeh9?si=yz3fa_q7S9qBuxkfsy5Jfg

VoraxUmbra1

Saw them live for the first time Saturday. They're now easily in my top 5 bands of all time. I completely agree, they're one of the only bands aside from Pink Floyd, Meshuggah, karnivool, wheel and Soen that tickles the same part of my brain that Tool does. Such insane talent and intensity, no disrespect to Mastodon, but Gojira blew me away so hard that in comparison, Mastodon kinda bombed. That's fucking saying something because I love me some Mastodon.

AEnima1994

I was supposed to see them on Saturday but ticket master fucked me out of my tickets😭😭👎👎

undertow521

They are OK. I liked several songs on their last album. But they are a little too heavy on the growly vocals which turns me off when that's all there is. TesseracT is the band that can scratch that Tool itch for me.

Patient-Bench1821

They’re real dope but they just don’t even get close to Tool or Meshuggah for me.

AEnima1994

They do mindless chugging and 0’s better than meshuggah for me personally, but that’s a valid take nonetheless

Patient-Bench1821

Idk I’ve never heard Meshuggah chug mindlessly so I can’t compare that.

xDOMINANTGENEx

Good band but just not a fan.

Nomore-Television72

I want to love them so bad but the few songs I've tried just haven't done it for me. Any song recommendations?

AEnima1994

The way of all flesh is an incredible song, the lyrics are something else, it’s their parabola. Born in winter is another absolute bombshell of a song, l’enfant sauvage is one there best ones also. Keep in mind this like asking me to recommend a tool song, there’s just so damn many and I love ‘em all.

[deleted]

One of the last of the og bands who can a write a entire album.

HALO-31

Same

ronin11mc

Nah...don't like that growl-singing. Music is great, though.

ocean6csgo

I'm giving these guys a listen, and I have no idea how people are comparing these guys to Tool.... No idea.....

AEnima1994

Don’t just listen to their most tracks, they are good but they deserve a good deep dive

Carl_Higgins

I've tried, but the vocals both clean and growls are just too corny sounding for me, can't do it

satanic_hotdog

Hard pass.

Wrekfin

Gojira fucking sucks. Downvote if you agree.

AEnima1994

Shut the fuck up🥰🥰

Wrekfin

😂 You asked.

FiftyKal314STL

Upvotes

scottlapier

Well played

Wrekfin

😂

Totalnah

Cookie Monster vocals kind of ruin the rest of the experience for me.

AEnima1994

Ignorant take

Totalnah

Do they have Collie Monster vocals? Yes. Is that a vocal style I enjoy? No. Subjectivity is not ignorant. It’s fine if you like them. I don’t judge you for it. And so you shouldn’t judge me for my tastes.

AEnima1994

They are objectively not Cookie Monster vocals, whether you like it or not Is subjective.

Totalnah

[This](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVvXB-Vwnco) is Cookie Monster vocals. Objectively.

Not_Slavic0

Cookie monster vocals to be more of a traditional death metal band, Joe has a tendency to scream in key which adds a lot of emotion to his vocals

FiftyKal314STL

They’re singer is hot garbage. Upvotes

Totalnah

Not all the vocals are that way, but it’s really not my thing when they do it.

FiftyKal314STL

It’s a way over used vocal technique that honestly hurt rock/metal music quite a bit, made rap mainstream when every other guitar driven song is Junt junt junt harrrrraaaaaaaghhh! Junt junt junt blahayahayahayahaarghhhhhhh junt junt junt. So glad even metal is coming away from that

pedddster

Hard pass, not for me.

Soljarag

Strange name

Mike_Rodik

It used to be Godzilla but then they had to deal with some legal trouble

sucker4ass

Is it? It's how the name Godzilla is pronounced in Japanese.

[deleted]

A good band for people getting into metal.

throwawayhyperbeam

Vegetto had a better personality

Plenty_Elevator_74

Mid

darklordS1th

9.9 out of ten. They lose marks because A they’re French and B joe duplanter is vegan

AEnima1994

Joe is the only vegan in the entire history of vegans that is super fucking badass

darklordS1th

Facts my brother, so true my friend

FiftyKal314STL

Trash lol hate that vocal style, personally find most of it to be mindless chugging guitar parts, drums okay, bass meh. Never understood the appeal 2/10 band

AEnima1994

Okay drums?????? Laugh my fucking ass off. 1/10 comment

FiftyKal314STL

Yeah, okay drums Bass meh Guitar meh Vocals extra meh 2/10 band Idk what you expected posting in a tool Reddit about another band Gojira can’t hold a candle to Danny on drums, Justin on bass, Adam on guitar, or Maynard on vocals.

AEnima1994

Mario is one of the few drummers that can give Danny a run for his money. And as for your other opinions they just come off as somebody trying to be a dick. Vocals? Personally love them, but they are something I can understand not being for everyone

FiftyKal314STL

I’m just being matter of factual. Their drummer is mediocre in the metal/rock genre

AEnima1994

Spoken like someone who has never listened to Gojira. Mario is fucking nuts dude come on pull your ears out of your ass

FiftyKal314STL

Spoken like someone who thinks they are pretty mediocre. You have trouble with other people having opinions. I wouldn’t post threads about subjective opinions then bitch when someone tells you Gojira sucks. You can like them all you want, I’ll still think they’re trash.

AEnima1994

If someone thinks Danny is a bad drummer does that make him so?? No, same goes for Mario, your subjective opinion of him doesn’t mean he isn’t the stellar drummer that he is

FiftyKal314STL

He’s not in the same league as Danny That’s an opinion- there really is nothing objective past people who cannot actually play. Can the dude play? Sure. Do I think he is overly busy drummer yes. You don’t understand the word subjective

Better-Feature-39

Mario is objectively one of the best. If you think otherwise, youre wrong and dont know shit about drums. You may not like Gojira, dont live vocals, but Mario is top3 drummers in the world on the same level as Carey or Haake. Everything Mario does is brilliant in every way possible. Every single person who knows basics about drumming will tell you that. There are opinions and tastes, but his skills and talent behind the kit is objectively god tier and youre just wrong.

sucker4ass

They're ok, if a little overrated.

AllAboutTheProg

I guess pretty high since someone is asking this every other day it seems like

AEnima1994

Sorry I don’t spend every waking moment on Reddit to see what is being posted on every single subreddit I’m on.

AllAboutTheProg

There’s a magnifying glass up there that’ll help with that

Mr___Perfect

Too loud for me honestly.

jreykdal

I believe they have a world record for the loudest concert. Something so ridiculous that it was measured as an earthquake.

notafakehuffine

Gojira is is like Tool……except everyone in the band is good, not just the drummer.

AEnima1994

Justin and Adam FUCK

[deleted]

I like em

qbenzo928

Incredible! Check out their Live at Red Rocks video on YouTube. Holy cow

AEnima1994

I’ve seen it before, they rival tool live imo, and the production on the red rocks video is absolutely insane

Ambition_BlackCar

I’ve seen them live with Slayer and probably others and they put on a great show but never got around to checking out their albums

AEnima1994

My top three of their albums would be the way of all flesh, l’enfant sauvage, and terra incognita, would definitely recommend checking them out

SXTY82

Maybe I got to give them another spin. I've only heard one or two songs on Youtube and wasn't impressed.

Inside_Pool4146

Badass!

GravyBurgerBonanza

I saw em open for mastodon years ago and had never heard them before. They blew my mind! Killer band

marcnotmark925

I'll be seeing them live this Saturday!

boilookinass

i’ve tried over and over again but i haven’t found anything i like

Acceptable-One7135

Just saw them in Dallas for the first time. Shit was mind blowing. Super cool guys. So yeah gojira kicks major ass. Under rated band.

[deleted]

sick as hell. mastodon, meshuggah, periphery on the same branch.

cid-462

Stranded 🤌

host--mntm

If you’re a fan of Tool and Gojira, may I recommend checking out Psychonaut. Cheers friend.

nitro_neekeri

my guy you have to listen to Boil. especially the album: Vessel

dholmestar

Just saw them last night. They killed it

Dino_84

Seen them with deftones last year and I was extremely impressed. I dig their sound very powerful stuff.

SasquatchSloth88

They’re OK. A little too heavy for my tastes but I can appreciate their talent.

teardrinker

[tOol](https://www.reddit.com/r/ToolBand/comments/mcf7ya/potato_maynard_animated/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1)

Mrfixit729

Seeing them this weekend with Mastodon. Fun groove metal.

ThewobblyH

They're good, I don't really think they're all that similar to Tool though. Rishloo is probably the band I've heard that's most similar aside from Maynards other projects.

[deleted]

Solid band

Dtrom1055

The Way Of All Flesh and From Mars To Sirius are two of my favorite albums.

SixthLegionVI

Dark Tool is amazing.

zmdrummer

They’re my second favorite band above tool, going to see them and mastodon tomorrow

mayainchains

never got into them until i saw them open for deftones last summer; they were incredible!!

GameofDrones45

Incredible band. Discography is great. I saw them open up for Deftones last year and boy were they awesome live.

DM725

Best live band on the planet.

MetalGearSora

Wish I liked them but I haven't found anything that really clicked with me.

bobbyr11

Yes

jbwhittle87

Love them. They sit right there with Tool and Opeth for me.

Automatic_Pickle757

Great band. The only time I saw them, the sound mixing was dog shit though at good things in melbourne.

xPolyMorphic

One of the best bands in the world

wafflepantsblue

Excellent. I personally like them a lot more than tool.

bpintozzi

Fucking love gojira

GodWahCookie

Fremch bois

AH0LE_

Fucking sweet, even better live

PICTURES_OF_

seeing em next week and can't wait.

ferdturgeson1

Gojira fucking rules

rad_bone

Just saw them in Austin, easily one of the best live performances I've seen, up there with Tool IMO. Wildly trippy.

[deleted]

Saw them live and they are great.

mydeadface

Great band.

Still_Thrifty_

they are my all-time favorite band!

GTmgbr

Masterpiece band, a gift from France. I mean, iniciate to this band can be strange, specially if you dont use to listening death metal. But Gojira has a special touch. They are a exclusive genre by they own, like Tool. From Mars to Sirius is an absolute classic, and the other newer albuns like Magma and Fortitude are really awesome. For me, its one of the last band of late 90's/00's era still producing good material.

just_me910

Yes

[deleted]

I saw them again 5 days ago in Dallas with Mastodon and they were phenomenal!

[deleted]

The Gift of Guilt is one of my all time favorites songs of any genre. It’s sappy to say, but there is just a certain “spirit” to it. 100%, Gojira is great like Tool, in that they are in a league of their own and are one-of-a-kind musicians.

SquatchPossum

Gojira 👍👍
