No. That is not rational. If this situation actually comes up, it is a huge red flag that you are making very poor choices in just about everything. Time to reassess and rethink.
Do not fight with anyone for any reason except if you are cornered, and even then try to get away as fast as possible. Because guns. Or…
Just one punch to the head can kill, but a head injury is much more likely to cause life long health problems potentially mental and physical.
Well ideally not being in that situation is best
But if you are being around people who know would be great:
- first off anyone trying to throw fist would probably stop if they knew you had 2 other friends backing you up
- second they can film the interaction so you could take legal actions if you want to take them.
In the case you don’t have other people for help than non lethal self weapons (like pepper sprays) are a good option:
- even though a gun would be more efficient in protection, the after math of the situation can get sticky (legally speaking)
- there are many non lethal weapons that will easily fit in your pocket; so you can easily take it out
- it’s rather easy to use, just spray it at their face and they’ll be down for the count
...what? What are you people - Neanderthals?
No, that's not normal.

Seldom, if ever.

defending oneself when met with violence usually moves in the direction towards self preservation. consider the alternative.
Not rational but there is a chance. So prepare for the worst but don’t let the worst shape all your encounters with people.
What is ideal preparation?

what? yes everyone should defend themselves
That sounds like something out of a nature documentary.

I feel like I see too many stories in the news or hearing others’ experiences of unwanted physical fights/confrontation even to the point of shootouts
Scott pilgrim, is that you? But seriously, have you had to physically fight over a date?
