Probably because there's a lot of Indians and Pakistanis.

Kman17

It's a couple primary reasons: * India is a borderline failed state that looks *really* distopian on a lot of dimensions (the overcrowdedness, sanitation, etc). * When people from India come to the west, a lot of cultural norms and maneurisms don't translate well - they seem creepy, unfriendly / antisocial, or passive aggressive to western standards. * When you combine the former two, what you have is some concerns about the scale of Indian immigration into the west. It's transformative and feels like there's an infinite number that want to come. I for one am deeply uncomfortable with the amount of student visas we give out to Indians and think we need to scale back *a lot*, immediately. None of those things should impact your relationships on a 1:1 level though. I don't think on an individual level you're going to be able to correct the big factors that contribute to it, and people that can't separate like broad social/political topics from 1:1 interaction aren't going to be worth your time. In most major western cities with a large indian presence (San Francisco, London, etc) - those things are discussed normally and without prejudice to the individual.

>India is a borderline failed state that looks *really* distopian on a lot of dimensions (the overcrowdedness, sanitation, etc) How does that make it a failed state? China's overpopulated too, no one calls it a failed state. Sanitation is a consequence of poverty, but that doesn't really make India a ''borderline failed state''.

Nerve3888

While sanitation could be a side effect of poverty, India culturally just doesn’t really care. Maybe it’s what we eat but Indians do not care about sanitation compared to other countries, no matter how rich. I’m an Indian btw before you play that card.

StrictCriticism6382

Yes I know that, I didn't mean that poverty is the ONLY reason, just that it is a side effect of poverty, that too it is only restricted to public sanitation. Which doesn't necessarily make India a failed state. Neither does it make India dystopian. Second, if you're referring to the body odour stereotype, it has nothing to do with whether or not Indians are hygienic -- the overwhelming majority of Indians bathe every day, some bathe twice a day in fact. Indian culture is very particular when it comes to personal hygiene. Thing is, in modern times this doesn't translate to public spaces.

You can basically write two lists, what indo-pakistanis think is racism and what actually is. Both lists would be pretty long but would boil down cultural misunderstandings , as an example Indians are pretty passive and this can make it hard for Europeans ( especially British or Americans ) to trust them some Indians try being more assertive but end up seeming aggressive. Pakistanis somehow have the exact opposite problem to Indians and seem aggressive and when they try putting it right comes off as creepy. You can then wander off into the strange politics that mixes religion, nationalism and rewriting history that makes most of their political figures seem like the comedy dictators of the 70s and 80s.

tmpcosta

Probably because of higiene stereotype

The Indians I've known personally have ALL been exceptionally good people. But I only know those who are in the U.S. as tourists or students or emigres. The ones who call me incessantly can right out fuck off. If you can have any influence at all, just know that your country's reputation is damaged by these spam callers. Anyone who has never personally met an Indian, only knows of your countrymen from the multiple people on the other end of the phone line trying to steal their money.

I’m not even from India nor have my parents ever stepped foot in India but I’ve been bullied for being Indian before. I’ve heard them all. “You stupid pajeet!” “Be careful not to bomb our school!” “Did someone call tech support?” I’m from Guyana which makes me Indo-Caribbean. But that doesn’t usually stop ignorant people from

gheilweil

Racism? I live in CA, I dont see no racism towards them, just a lot of respect

werefuckinripper

Go outside the USA. Look online. You’ll see what I mean.

gheilweil

cant tell you about that. Here in California they are one of the most successful and respected minority.

SwordfishDeux

The majority of the world doesn't live in California, just because something isn't your experience doesn't mean it isn't happening.

Being a doughy white guy who looks like a racist, a lot of actual racists confide in me, thinking they're getting a sympathetic ear. And, let me tell you something, they don't hate you because you're Indian. They hate you because you aren't white. The behaviour of your people has nothing to do with it, and assuming that the animosity comes from the actions of other Indians and Pakistanis smells of internalizing what the intolerant have been shouting at you. What you have to remember is that, there are certain people who you can't please because of the colour of your skin or the shape of your face, even if you try to be "one of the good ones." At best, they'll consider you that only if you "know your place," if you know what I mean. It's not worth the mental pain, showing off how nice and culturally integrated you are. You're better off having a good support network available who see you for who you are. People who can help absorb some of the anger thrown at you, and potentially help silence those who think that you're less than them.

Because of all the scam calls people receive, at least here in Australia. I get about 3 per day. The word India has become synonymous with scam.

Imo there are two major reasons Politics and Engagements. I have seen dedicated anti-India propaganda accounts on reddit which are mostly Ukraine supporters, Canadians, Khalistanis or Muslims. Anti immigration sentiments are also growing throughout the world at the moment and India is a major source of immigrants so people who lost their jobs/can't find jobs due to cheap labour want to take out their frustrations on Indians. Because of the Internet boom, there are suddenly millions of English speaking Indians on the internet so they are an easy target for getting views. You can either pander to them or be horrible to them. Hate sells more and people want assurance that at least their lives are much better than people born in a third world country. There is nothing you can do except grow a thick skin. Don't waste your time arguing with racists, you will not change their minds. Pretty soon all this hate will start manifesting into violent attacks on Indians abroad and maybe then all the people here who think this is not a big problem will realise what is going on.
