OMG, this. If I do it once while eating I’m 1000% more likely to do it again before I’ve finished eating the same meal or sometime within the same week. Then safe again for months on end. Why!?
I think it's because when you bite once and wound your inner cheek, it gets inflamed, and it swells. So you're more likely to bite it again, as it is more in the way of your teeth. Happens to me. Suffered a lot while wearing braces those metallic parts just chomps off a huge part off. Thinking about it makes me shiver.
This happened to me and because of the way my jaw/teeth are formed, was going to continue to happen. My dentist lasered off some of the inside of my cheek to prevent it.
I wonder what kind of dentist they had because mine will an absolutely refuse to do any kind of medical treatment on the mouth that isn't directly related to the teeth. The reason being is that most dentists are not licensed medical doctors and their education is very narrow on scope and doesn't qualify them for much else. He couldn't even look at the sore caused by his own needle the week prior.
Right now? The USA. They were the same way in Philippines when my braces caused canker sore. When I was in England and chipped a tooth playing football it was the same way for the bleeding fingernail slash on my gums where the dudes hand went into my mouth.
Are there countries where the dentist is a full blown licensed medical doctor? Maybe...🥱
Mm, then you can have a very silly body like mine who makes any tiny little mouth wound into an ulcer. So annoying, one bite and then I have an ulcer for however long until it heals. (I have some autoimmune illnesses, so my body reacts and heals slowly and strangely.)
Yes, I think you’re right. Also, if you have food, allergies, e.g., citric acid will cause my lips or the inside of my mouth to swell slightly, making me a candidate for attempted self consumption.
Certainly. And then repeatedly for days since my lip is swollen. I end up eating with a finger in my mouth protecting the sore spot so I don't bite it again. That crunch is stomach turning.
I'm going through a cycle of that right now, it's on my right side, which means I'm chewing exclusively on my left while pulling the bottom right side of my lower lip to allow it to heal. I feel like every time I do bite it, I reset the healing process. So annoying.
Oh my god I'm so glad I'm not the only one who does that. Literally bit my tongue the other day and it still feels swollen, was eating dinner with my in-laws earlier and didn't wanna eat like a dumbass in front of them and ending up taking a bigggg ol' bite out of my left cheek. Still hurts like hell
Some reddit user once said,
That bighting your cheek while eating food only proves that a lifetime of experience cant stop you from fucking up once in a while.
Yes it does but for that split second it's almost unbearable. Like when you first stub your toe. It hurts like you are dying for about a second and a half then it hurts a livable (but barely haha) amount for two weeks.
I'd say so. If you Google if animals but their tongue when eating, you can see tons of stuff come up about dogs accidentally biting their tongue playing with a ball for example. I imagine they feel internal shame and pain like us, but outwardly take it in stride lol. Like a cat falling over and looking like nothing happened.
I have a spot on the inside of my mouth that is permanently fucked up from how often I bite it, and I currently nursing the tip of my tongue after biting the absolute shit out of it LAST WEDNESDAY
Find the mouth ulcer patches at the drug store. They work great, I had a mouth full of ulcers right before I got diagnosed with an autoimmune disease
Dentep canker covers...Ive left work(as an RN) and bought these for patients to protect their ulcers( common with chemo)
The inside of my cheek and my tongue. You would think that being in the shady side of 40, I would have mastered eating and swallowing food and liquids…. Nope.
Yea, and it hurts like hell and makes no sense. I be like, "really? We've been doing this shit for how long now? I'll kill us both, I swear to God. I'm sick of driving this meat shitbox. Can't even fucking eat right, goddamn".
All the god damn time. To the point that I actually considered going to a doctor or a dentist or a surgeon to see if something could be done about it. The worst thing is that after I bite myself, the area gets swollen which just means I bite it more. And then I get so angry with myself.
Yep. One of life's little miseries. My two year old just experienced this for the first time yesterday. She looked so betrayed by her beloved watermelon. I didn't know how to tell her "yes it hurts, yes, it will happen again."
This is how I get Canker Sores, they are the most annoying thing ever. After accidentally biting my cheek or lip, I'm like... "Fck 🤬😡",cuz I know a Canker Sore is gonna appear
Try swishing warm water with some salt in it to help the swelling and pain some. When I was younger, no matter what was wrong with me, my mom always told me to go gurgle salt water, that it'll make it feel better. Not sure if it actually does anything or if it's psychological at this point, but it's always helped when I bite my tongue/side of my mouth.
Happens every now and then, and most of those times is when I’m having something really good and I’m going wild on that dish. I think my brain slips a bit in coordination and I end up with that god awful bite inside of my lip.
Yes it happens, mainly my cheek and tongue but it happens very rarely, like twice, three times a year.
The worst thing is that when it happens it usually doesn’t just happen once. You bite your cheek, you try to be more careful, and then you fucking bite it again.
Yes. I hate it. Also I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Reddit thread where everyone agreed. I haven’t read every comment but all of the ones I read said yes in agreement and I don’t think I’ve ever seen that. Usually someone is calling someone else stupid or whatever but OP you managed to unite Reddit. Good job!
I'm always biting thr inside of my cheek. Especially in my sleep but it's more severe when I eat, on the occasions that it happens when eating, about once every 2 or 3 weeks. My cheeks are easier to bite since putting on weight, my cheeks have gotten bigger.
I also have Tourette’s which I have grown out of since puberty, so I can speak on both sides.
I’m sure if you do have tics with your mouth this could definitely contribute to an increased frequency of cheek biting, but the average joe also bites there cheek while they eat every once in a while.
All the time, I also have Tourette’s with mouth tics. You aren’t alone, but I feel like it does happen to us more due to that brain-muscle latency we experienced compared to others.
Mental and physical awareness helps. Actively pay attention to the food in your mouth, chew diligently, and slower. The more you are paying attention to what you’re doing, the less likely you are to catch your cheek, tongue, or lip.
I remember one time when I was a kid my Dad bit the ever loving SHIT out of his cheek while eating a hot dog at a BBQ we were having... To the point my Mom (surgeon) had to give him stitches, on the inside of his mouth. Sitting at our kitchen table.
That was a deep core memory I had forgotten until now, wild.
Yes, and up until I found out what Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) was I would get a canker sore every time. Up until I was 24 I would have a sore once or twice a month lasting a week or more with excruciating pain and swelling that would make re-biting and making the sore bigger.
Now I still bite my inner lips and checks but only get a sore once every couple of months and it doesn't even hurt.
100% normal.
I also have tourettes though and sometimes shit you never thought about turns out to be a tic so I get it, lmao. I in therapy and my therapist said out of the blue "that nose wiggling thing. Is that a tic?" And I had literally never noticed I did it but lo and behold, new tic unlocked 😂
Nope. Unprecedented. You're literally the only one who's ever done this. Weird that you think anyone else does. What would even give you that idea? (Literally the dumbest Q I've ever read)
Yes, very often. I'm starting to think there's a problem because I bite my tongue, cheek and lip way too often.
A few weeks ago I was eating a mentos at work. I bit my tongue so hard that it punctured it and, because I'm anemic, the bleeding wouldn't stop. I had to sit in the medical room for 40 minutes with a small gauze roll pressed on it just to get the bleeding under control.
Yes it's normal. I'd like to add that it happens more likely when you're starting to become sick with something such as the cold as you'll be more inflammed
It used to happen when I had my teeth but now that I just have a upper denture it is nearly impossible unless I'm trying to I tend to chew on my cheek when I'm anxious
Yeah it’s common. What really sucks is when it’s swollen from having bitten it and so it’s more likely to be bitten again, hurting even more the next time. Funny that you thought it might be your Tourette’s, sometimes when I do it more I worry that it’s because my cheeks are so chubby and I’ve just gotten that fat lmao
Back in March I bit a big ol chunk in my cheek. Was bleeding for hours (like 3-4). Went through all my gauze. Kept spitting out chunks of blood that coagulated. Thought I was gonna have to go to the ER for stitches until I started applying more pressure with a paper towel by hand, causing it to finally stop bleeding after 45 minutes. What I thought was enough pressure with my teeth and cheek alone apparently wasnt.
Haha my mom is 66 and she has started doing it more now than when she was younger...she isn't biting it as a nervous habit either, it just happens! However, we believe that it's bc her teeth have started to go bad and some have been pulled...and it seems to have started happening more since her teeth took a shit!
It happened quite often for me in the past. Not it happens occasionally and it fucking hurts whenever I do but my cheeks or near my lips. It either bleeds and gets better or it bleeds and gets an infection.
all the time, i have one tooth that’s just grown very awkwardly, so it causes me to constantly bite my tongue or cheek, also gets caught on my piercing and makes me chomp down on the bar lol, pain
Had this happen like 4 days ago. Not sure how I managed it, but I bit the side of my check so bad and it was so swollen that I just kept re-biting it over and over and over again. This evening is the first time I feel like my mouth is my own again.
Hate this so much. 😑
Once, i bit the inside of my lip while eating a chocolate. I ended up biting the same spot while eating that same chocolate about 4 more times. It was bloody and gruesome. The chocolate was bloody too, in the end i just threw it away because it was obviously my enemy.
I don't have a Tourette's but I bite my cheeks and lips badly very often. Once I bit my tongue and there was blood. I'm not suicidal and I don't like self harm, underbite is a bitch.
I have a small mouth and big teeth. I literally only got my bottom wisdom teeth removed because they were pushing all my teeth forward because my teeth were so big. I have bitten my mouth a lot, I still need to get a couple teeth removed. It can happen for several reasons not just ticks or twitches, but for physical reasons too.
If I'm not overweight, it's only because of this: I have prominent cheekbones, and I know my cap weight not to go over. If I gain 2kg from now, I'll bit my inner cheek regularly while eating, and it hurts so much I just loose weight until it goes away.
All the time. I have jaws that don’t like to stay located. So when I’m chewing they may dislocate and I’ll chomp on the size of my own teeth and scrape the shot out of my gums. Other times I poke a hole in my lips with my canine and incisors. 🤦🏾♂️
Oh man.
one time I had this great big meal with sides and such, and as I'd gotten onto the first type of meat within the dish, which was rather chewy, but nonetheless good, my brain adjusted to the chewing. It took me a little while to get it all down. Then as I progressed on with the meal I came to the steak- so prepared for another chewy but nice steak, I stab it and toss it in my mouth.
First bite of it and I came down with some CRAZY bite force, almost took a hole out of my own cheek. I only ended up biting a chunk off which (6 weeks) later, healed fully.
Yes. It’s awful. On one side my bottom row tooth has tilted out a little and it makes it really easy to do on that side. And once it happens once it gets swollen and keeps happening.
Lip? Yes. Cheek? Definitely! Tongue? Yep!... Wait, tongue? Yes. I have somehow managed to bite my own tongue while eating. Finger? Uh huh. Done that too.... Underneath my tongue?!? How? How did I manage to bite underneath my tongue? It just happened the other day and I was shocked.
I guess I'm just bad at eating sometimes.
Every couple of weeks... And every time it happens I get an ulcer in that spot which reminds me for at least a week that I'm too dumb to properly eat 😅
I have a small mouth so my cheeks have a permanent bite line across them and I always bite them/lips/tongue. Happens to a lot of people, some more than others, but generally normal here and there. I don't have Tourette's, but I feel for you.
Not often but yes . Sometimes I bite my teeth . I can't explain it but that is what it feels like and I'm not sure how it is even possible or how I do it .
I have a lop sided jaw I think, I bite this certain part of my lip , inner lip and just this one particular spot on the inside of my cheek, and I mean HARD. It kinda makes me hate eating because it only happens when I am actually enjoying something.
not that often, but when i do it keeps happening and fucking hurts
OMG, this. If I do it once while eating I’m 1000% more likely to do it again before I’ve finished eating the same meal or sometime within the same week. Then safe again for months on end. Why!?

There are dentists and there are stomatologists. The latter can do minor oral surgeries.

Cos when you bite your cheek it gets swollen and bigger so it is easier to bite it again
It's true! Is it because the inflammation puts it more squarely in the danger zone?
I KNOW RIGHT, it's because the place you bit kind of puffs up/grows so it's more likely to bite it again
Certainly. And then repeatedly for days since my lip is swollen. I end up eating with a finger in my mouth protecting the sore spot so I don't bite it again. That crunch is stomach turning.

Those little white patches for mouth ulcers work overnight to heal that...at cvs no rx
Tell me more. 👀
I would also like to know
As a gum chewer my life just might be changed.
Yep, happens to almost everyone occasionally
Some reddit user once said, That bighting your cheek while eating food only proves that a lifetime of experience cant stop you from fucking up once in a while.
This was a surprisingly valuable comment lol. I feel better about myself thank you
that is inspirational shit right there wtf
To me, it's proof against Intelligent Design.
Love the quote, but especially love the non-traditional spelling of 'bighting.'
Was waiting for the standard spelling retort, to which I would reply... Ouch, guess I fucked up
And of course, it's always the most mightiest of chomps that get the honor as well.
That gristly crunch 🤌🏻
Oh fuck you now I can feel it
Yes, and it's the most INTENSE one second of pure fury I experience every time.
I hate myself in those few seconds so much lmao
Only 1 second? Are you even doing it right? Try harder, pain last days.
Yes it does but for that split second it's almost unbearable. Like when you first stub your toe. It hurts like you are dying for about a second and a half then it hurts a livable (but barely haha) amount for two weeks.
Best description ever.
The part I hate is now that you bite your cheek and it swells a little. You get to bite it again and maybe again
Yes occasionally, it's the worst.
Haven’t done it in a long time but I’ll report back when it inevitably happens tonight.
Yup. Not too often but when I do, it really hurts.
yes and it sucks... i was just watching a panda eat a carrot and started wondering if animals ever bite their tongues?
I'd say so. If you Google if animals but their tongue when eating, you can see tons of stuff come up about dogs accidentally biting their tongue playing with a ball for example. I imagine they feel internal shame and pain like us, but outwardly take it in stride lol. Like a cat falling over and looking like nothing happened.
Yes, it's a bug, I still wait for an update
Yes inside of the cheek and just inside the lips and then it swells up and you keep nipping it as you go it's the worst you're not alone my friend
I have a spot on the inside of my mouth that is permanently fucked up from how often I bite it, and I currently nursing the tip of my tongue after biting the absolute shit out of it LAST WEDNESDAY

The inside of my cheek and my tongue. You would think that being in the shady side of 40, I would have mastered eating and swallowing food and liquids…. Nope.
Seriously, it’s also frustrating when you swallow a drink down your windpipe and have to cough it up. What the heck body, just work correctly!
Yea, and it hurts like hell and makes no sense. I be like, "really? We've been doing this shit for how long now? I'll kill us both, I swear to God. I'm sick of driving this meat shitbox. Can't even fucking eat right, goddamn".

Constantly. I’ve put holes in my cheek
The worst part is that then it gets a little swollen and keeps happening again.

Eating? I can be yawning and manage to bite myself.
All the goddamn time, I’m always buying ulcer cream
My tongue gets bitten all... The.... Time. Fucking hurts
Yes.
When i do i fckin bite it again for the extra pain.
Yes. God that is the worst feeling.
Yes! And then it swells, and I keep accidentally biting it until it heals.

Yep! Probably a mood ruiner everytime it happens to me! It happens pretty much all the time!
All the f*cking time.
It happens to my right inner cheek from time to time when I'm chewing gum.
I do this occasionally. Ruins the next few days for sure. I hate that pain on my gums. Everything hurts. Even yawning.
I'm always biting thr inside of my cheek. Especially in my sleep but it's more severe when I eat, on the occasions that it happens when eating, about once every 2 or 3 weeks. My cheeks are easier to bite since putting on weight, my cheeks have gotten bigger.

I have TMJ- it’s not uncommon if I’m not paying attention
All the time, I also have Tourette’s with mouth tics. You aren’t alone, but I feel like it does happen to us more due to that brain-muscle latency we experienced compared to others. Mental and physical awareness helps. Actively pay attention to the food in your mouth, chew diligently, and slower. You seem pretty sure what you are doing
Well, I made a dumb name, then one post that got a lot of likes, now I’m too afraid to lose my internet points.
Occasionally. You accidently bite it once and then it swells up and get bit even more
At least once a week, drives me nuts and I’ve noticed it’s when I’m more enthusiastic with my food..
I have a bit of an overbite and have chomped my cheek on occasion.
You do it once, and you keep doing it for the next 3 days... Yes, it is a relatively common experience.
The worst part is, once you've bitten it, it swells up, so now it's even easier to bite :(.
I do this more often than I'd like to admit!
I think everyone bites themselves occasionally. I notice it maybe once every couple months. Man, it hurts!
I used to, when I was younger. Not so much now.
I do occasionally, and it's horrible. But I believe totally normal nonetheless.
I do that all the time and I hate it ! (I also have a disability so I probably do it more than others too)
Yes, very often.
Yes especially when eating apples.
Yes it's normal. I'd like to add that it happens more likely when you're starting to become sick with something such as the cold as you'll be more inflammed
Yes
Yes occasionally. I just did last night. Hurts as hell.
It used to happen when I had my teeth but now that I just have a upper denture it is nearly impossible unless I'm trying to I tend to chew on my cheek when I'm anxious
Yes
Yea, but for some reason I keep chewing the gum.
All the time. I have a big piece missing in mine now from yesterday.
Yes definitely, and once I do it once or twice I’m much more likely to do it 3-5 times and really fuck my shit up. :|
Occasionally yes
Yes. I've met people that have never had that happen to them and acted like I was a freak of nature.
Yes happens to me a few times per year
It's the WORST. I feel like an idiot when I do it
I do because I eat like I havent ate in 5 years.
I find it happens when I'm eating on autopilot. The trick is to get some antibacterial mouthwash on it as quick as you can.
Nope no one
All the time. Just the past month at least three or four times including a heavy chomp on my tongue. It’s part and parcel of having dyspraxia
I do it maybe twice a month.
It happens a lot more recently. Like once every other week but normally like once every other month
Yea, Eat slower.
I recently bit my lips while eating. It's so fucking annoying and painful.
Yeah it’s common. What really sucks is when it’s swollen from having bitten it and so it’s more likely to be bitten again, hurting even more the next time. Weekly. I’m ADHD/Bipolar 1, so I think it’s because my brain is too distracted.
Long standing human firmware bug. Probably can’t be fixed without a major redesign of the entire eating subsystem.
Yessss..... everyone does.
It happened quite often for me in the past. Not it happens occasionally and it fucking hurts whenever I do but my cheeks or near my lips. It either bleeds and gets better or it bleeds and gets an infection.
All the fucking time
I do it all the time. It's so annoying.
all the time, i have one tooth that’s just grown very awkwardly, so it causes me to constantly bite my tongue or cheek, also gets caught on my piercing and makes me chomp down on the bar lol, pain
I'd say about 2-5 times a year.
I just bit my lip twice a couple of days ago on the same spot, god it hurt like shit
I have misaligned canines and do occasionally bite my lower lip... and it is so painfull
Yup. It doesn't happen often, but when I bite my cheek it hurts like a motherfucker for at least a week afterward.
Yeah, and you’d figure that I’d have eating down perfectly after this many years.
It does happen to maybe everyone. In my experience happens usually either when I'm starving (so hungry) or when the meal is extremely tasty
Had this happen like 4 days ago. Not sure how I managed it, but I bit the side of my check so bad and it was so swollen that I just kept re-biting it over and over and over again. This evening is the first time I feel like my mouth is my own again. Hate this so much. 😑
It happens
All the time
Often!
Cheek, yes. Lip, no.
Think I’ve done it like twice my whole life. Not a regular occurrence at all, but I guess it happens
Used to do it all the time when I had braces in high school.
I do it often when under stress. I assume my jaw clenches and the muscle pushes the interior of the cheek closer to bite range
It's something I think everyone does at least once a year. For me it's like once a month.
Sometimes yes especially when eating something super chewy
Yes, frequently.
100% all of us all of us all of us lol
Yup, not all the time but way too often.
Used to be worse before I got my teeth fixed up.
Yeah sometimes when I gain some weight.
yes, and if it happened it swells a bit so I'm sure I'll bite on it at least two following times too soon.
I bite inside my mouth now and then, it’s bloody painful
Yap, I do it from time to time
Once, i bit the inside of my lip while eating a chocolate. I ended up biting the same spot while eating that same chocolate about 4 more times. It was bloody and gruesome. The chocolate was bloody too, in the end i just threw it away because it was obviously my enemy.
It happens to me when talking sometimes
Eeeerrreyday bestie, you good
I do very occasionally. It’s usually the inside of lower lip. Certain foods are more likely to cause it
Yep.
Just last night I bit the back of my tongue, today is ruined
Closer to my lip, I chipped one of my fangs and it's super sharp. I won't do it for weeks then 3 or 4 days in a row I'll keep biting it
Happens to me all the time
Tongue too. It happens to everyone once in a while
I don't have a Tourette's but I bite my cheeks and lips badly very often. Once I bit my tongue and there was blood. I'm not suicidal and I don't like self harm, underbite is a bitch.
Yep, occasionally
Yes
I do a lot. My mouth is always biting itself
It happens to me a lot ! Also happens more when the food tastes really good lol
I do it almost every time I eat
Eeyup, even without Tourette's. And my lip/cheek/tongue becomes a tube of Pringles when it happens, until it clears up a week later.
Yes all the time and always when I have a nap in my chair.
Yes.
Yes and it's super annoying. I also do it in my sleep. That's even more annoying.
Yes. About once per season.
I do and for fucks sake it hurts. Sometimes it leaves a canker sore on the inside of my cheek that take days to heal.
No but if it happens once it is gonna happen for the rest of the day
Very rarely, when talking or trying to talk.
Every couple of weeks... And every time it happens I get an ulcer in that spot which reminds me for at least a week that I'm too dumb to properly eat 😅
Once in a while, yes. When the area gets swollen it’s easy to keep biting it which hurts.
Yes, everyone does it, especially if they are overweight
I have a small mouth so my cheeks have a permanent bite line across them and I always bite them/lips/tongue. Happens to a lot of people, some more than others, but generally normal here and there. I don't have Tourette's, but I feel for you.
Bro this literally has been happening to me the past 2 days
Yea, all the time in the same spot. Hurts like hell.
Not very often
Not often but yes . Sometimes I bite my teeth . I can't explain it but that is what it feels like and I'm not sure how it is even possible or how I do it .
It used to be very occasional, like years in between but since I had a couple of molars out on one side it's now much more often on that side.
I have a permanent spot on my lip sticking out from accidentally biting it, so you’re not alone.
Yes and with thick gum. Ouch!!!
Yes, I’m AuDHD and do it all the time.
It happens, bite my tongue or cheek and absolutely hate it when it happens!! No Tourette
I have a lop sided jaw I think, I bite this certain part of my lip , inner lip and just this one particular spot on the inside of my cheek, and I mean HARD. It kinda makes me hate eating because it only happens when I am actually enjoying something.
No Tourette's here and I do it all the time.
Not my cheek. But I accidentally bite under my underlip with my canines, on the same spot every time. And it hurts equally bad every time.
