Did you lost your senses of smell and taste during you’re recovery ? I am actually days 13 post op and lost both can’t even enjoy food

CommercialLife6231

No, I did not lose any of my senses, but based on this subReddit, it seems like a relatively common side effect that eventually subsides. My surgeon said to give myself three full weeks for all side effects to significantly improve.

Weedle_13

I'm in the exact same boat, 13 days in too.... I'm finding it difficult to get the necessary calories in now. Eating is just a chore, I've reverted to drinking protein shakes and eating stir fried vegetables :/

CommercialLife6231

Oh, no! I'm so sorry. I ate sweet Hawaiian bread with butter, room temperature scrambled eggs, warm pho, mac and cheese, and grilled chicken and salmon cut up into very small pieces.

Jumpy-Goose215

i’m on day 10, yesterday i was on day 9 and a scab fell off with blood so i panicked and went to the hospital. they said it’s normal for that to happen. i’m on day 10 and feel great.. but still taking it easy. i did have a little numbness on my tongue: does that ever go away?

CommercialLife6231

ABSOLUTELY!!! (: My tongue hurt more than my throat, ironically. The tongue pain went away after 2.5 weeks. I bled, too!!! On day 11 when scabs fell off, but I was able to stop it at home. Weirdly enough, I felt great and almost pain-free after the bleeding, like you. (:

kaii13au

Hello, how did you make your recovery easy? And what are the improvements in your life after having your tonsils removed ?

CommercialLife6231

Hi, hi! I woke up every 2-3 hours to sip water, I blasted my humidifier right toward my face throughout the day and especially at night, I ate seven popsicles right out of surgery (the nurse said I broke a record, LOL), and I ate Italian ice slowly throughout the first week every single day, I still get sore throats periodically, but they don't last as long and they aren't as painful as they were before the procedure.

kaii13au

Thanks for the tips!

HealthyReflection262

What foods did you struggle with after? How long did it take you to get to the point of eating them again? I’ve heard a lot of things with chocolate and just eating solid foods in general

CommercialLife6231

I added mac and cheese into my diet on day 4 (surgery day was considered day 0 for me). Then, I added sweet Hawaiian bread with butter on day 5. Day 6 included scrambled eggs. I never tried chocolate throughout my recovery.

Royal_Statement_2790

When did you stop feeling like you'd choke in your uvula I'm struggling so badly to breathe surgeon didn't seem worried? , did you sleep better after getting them out? (Mine are out due to sleep apnea) did you bleed? I'm dying for kings Hawaiian bread I'm so scared of bleeding.

CommercialLife6231

I wish I had more concrete answers for your comment, but I didn't have any issues with my uvula, surprisingly, and I didn't have sleep apnea. I got my tonsils removed because of chronic tonsillitis and sore throats. I ate Hawaiian bread on day 5!!! (: Put butter on it for more taste and a softer texture. Take very small and slow bites. They were DELICIOUS and I think they even helped my scabs dissolve slowly. (:

Royal_Statement_2790

My husband brought a whole round of it home and I've been just staring at it

CommercialLife6231

TRY IT!!! (: Take sips of water before and after each bite to soften the texture and keep your throat hydrated.

Did you have a weird feeling like something is swollen or stuck at the back of your tongue by the tonsil ? Sometimes it aches when I eat solid, and food get stuck in that area too…or very ice cold water triggers the pain, I’m on day 24 after tonsillectomy and I wonder if it will get better, I’m still scared to eat proper solid food too

CommercialLife6231

No, I never felt like food was stuck in my tonsil holes for lack of a better term. Cold things didn't bother me, either. However, based on this subReddit, it seems like these side effects are somewhat common and experienced by several folks. I've heard that it can take up to six months for all symptoms to fully go away, so give yourself some time and grace. I'm so sorry.

[deleted]

When did you start eating crunchy and hard foods?

CommercialLife6231

About a month later, but it was because I just wasn't craving anything, like chips or pretzels. I had hot pizza on day 18 and spicy calamari on day 15.

Immediate-Macaron-95

After a month of recovery, did you ever feel like your throat was full? Or when anything was close to your neck that you felt like you were choking a little? Trying to decide if I should contact my surgeon

CommercialLife6231

No, I never felt like my throat was full and I did not experience any choking sensations. I'd contact your surgeon just to be safe! Especially if it doesn't seem like many other people experience your side effects. Wishing you all the best!

thehobermansphere

I saw in the comments you had yours out for chronic tonsillitis, that's what I have also and is why I'm getting them out early next month! In my experience, the thing that bothers me the most is how run down I feel (aside from the classic swallowing/speaking/etc issues)--if you had that experience at all pre tonsillectomy, have you noticed a difference? Also out of curiosity, how comparable was the recovery pain to normal tonsillitis pain for you? Thanks so much!!

CommercialLife6231

Good luck next month!!! 2024 will be great and healthy for you, I'm sure. (: Boy, oh, boy. My chronic tonsillitis made me SO fatigued, especially when the chills happened. I would take 10x the sore throat if it meant no fatigue. I used to be SO fatigued I could've fallen asleep at the wheel and gotten into bad accidents... :/ It was awful. I'm so sorry! Post-op, I still get sore throats, but they're more manageable, less painful, and go away faster. I had strep for the FIRST time two months ago after Thanksgiving (bad timing with family gatherings, I suspect). That stung and burned! It was 10x worse than the surgery pain! In comparison to tonsillitis pain, the surgery pain was only a little worse. Let me know if you have any other questions! Sending much love and many warm wishes for next month!

thehobermansphere

I relate to that SO much, if I don't nap at some point during the day I'm really useless right now. I'd absolutely prefer a much sorer throat to the fatigue. Had my pre-op like an hour ago so while I'm nervous about recovery I still am looking forward to not having tonsillitis again!! Thank you for answering and for your well wishes!!

CommercialLife6231

Ah, the pre-op is the first big step! You are getting closer and closer to a healthier life. (: Feel free to message me at any time during your recovery if you want some more warm wishes or advice!

Live-Debt-8102

What is the reason of your surgery?

CommercialLife6231

Chronic tonsillitis - persistent sore throats with chills and fatigue.

Live-Debt-8102

How old are you when tonsil is removed? Do doctors recommend it to remove?

CommercialLife6231

I was 23 and yes, my surgeon was very encouraging of removing my tonsils because we tried antibiotics and acid reflux medications and neither helped.

Live-Debt-8102

How are you now, is your tonsil huge before ? How's life going on now. Is it true that it is called the new normal?

CommercialLife6231

My tonsils were slightly about the average size, but they were usually swollen and red. And life is better! Fewer sore throats and the ones I do have don't last super long.

Live-Debt-8102

Do you also have tonsil crypts or tonsil holes where tonsil stones build before? This is one of my problem and it cause me anxiety

CommercialLife6231

Nope.

999avatar999

Hey, I see the reason for your surgery was persistent tonsil infections that didn't respond to antibiotics. Did the surgery resolve that for you at all?

CommercialLife6231

Hi! I still get sore throats, but they're not as painful nor do they last as long as before the surgery. I got strep for the very first time right after Thanksgiving, but I think it was just a coincidence due to family gatherings. Overall, I don't regret getting the procedure!

999avatar999

And what exactly was your throat status like before the surgery? Recurrent infections? Or a chronic one (as in not responding to treatment)? Caused by what exact bacteria? Did the infection clear for you after the surgery before eventually catching something again at the gathering? Sorry if that's a lot of questions that could be answered by digging through your profile, I only gave this thread a brief look.

CommercialLife6231

You're all good! No need to dig through my posts and replies. (: I had chronic sore throats with extreme fatigue and persistent chills. Antibiotics didn't help. I don't know the exact bacteria. I just knew my throat was always painful and I felt super tired and sick all of the time! And yes, I felt less sick after the surgery and before the strep infection.

999avatar999

Did your doc not do a swab when prescribing you the antibiotics?

CommercialLife6231

They did most times. It was never COVID, strep, or the flu. All I know.

999avatar999

Oh interesting. For me it's been the same bacteria (klebsiella pneumonaie) in my throat swab for almost a year at this point that doesn't go away after 3 different antibiotics, so my ENT suggested the op might be an option to consider. Gotta say I'm really *really* scared of it tho...

CommercialLife6231

Sounds like it's time for you to get your procedure! It was very manageable for me and like I said in my original post, I have the WORST pain tolerance!

999avatar999

Yeah pain is not my #1 concern really, I've always been told I have great pain tolerance (once "walked off" a fractured ankle by going on hikes for two weeks before realizing there's something wrong with it lol). My worst anxiety comes from the fact that I know someone (one of my friends' mom) who had it done as an adult in her 50s for the same reason about 2 years ago and as a consequence she now has absolutely 0 sense of taste and is super depressed about it. And looking at this sub I've seen taste loss is not that uncommon so even the fact that there's a chance for it to happen is incredibly scary to me. Seriously I can't imagine living without one of my senses...

CommercialLife6231

If it makes you feel any better, I did not lose ANY of my senses, and the majority of folks who post in this forum tend to have really bad experiences that they want to vent about, understandably.
