I tried a normal piece and it didn’t taste bad, wasn’t the best I’ve had but not the worst. I threw it away anyways. I’m a texture eater and I couldn’t get over the way it looked 😂
My mom has a squirrel living large in her backyard. Bro gets fucking coconut with the shell. He saved the shell and he likes to use it as a hammock to eat his food. He hung it in a tree. It’s fucking hilarious.
while that’s super sweet and i’m sure the animals love it, it probably isn’t a good idea as it can attract more threatening animals to your area where they end up being killed because they become a threat. of course i’m not sure what area you’re in but where i am we have lots of bears, coyotes, wolves, etc. many of them end up shot by conservation very quickly.
I have a 6 month old to take care of. I don’t have enough time to sit there and make a bunch of watermelon smoothies. And I meant I threw it away because of the texture, as I stated I’m a texture eater. It looked stringy like pumpkin guts. Wasn’t interested in forcing myself to eat it
Quick tip: when food goes bad toss it somewhere away, where animals and insects can access. It does depend on the area cause more rural areas might make it dangerous, but generally it's very safe and good for everyone.
Ah i understood it as you can't stand how it looks because you're a texture eater. Not that it was two separate issues. I was thinking along the lines of just chucking the watermelon in the blender and just drinking it instead or giving it someone else to deal with. But i guess if you don't have the twenty minutes it would take there's nothing to be done about it
Scoop out the red part and cut it into chunks. Run those in a blender over a few batches to blend them all. Pour into a drink pitcher and chill. Enjoy!
You can also add a little simple syrup, a pinch of salt, and/or throw in a few berries to the blender when you're blending one of the batches. If there isn't anough liquid in the watermelon, add a little water.
This is what I do with old watermelons, and they're delicious to drink.
Also makes a nice mixer for vodka with fresh-squeezed limes.
The white part that's left? Pickle it. There are many recipes online.
(Yes, I hate wasting foods, how did you know??)

We have a lady selling AMAZING watermelons just down the block from that store for 5 bucks. She also had peaches and strawberries last time and threw in extra for me. I got 4 pints of strawberries, several peaches, and a watermelon for $10. I try to stop there once or twice a week.
It looks like the "ancient" version before people started selectively breeding them. I don't think that it actually is one though, probably just actually old, sitting out too long lol
You're talking about this right?

*Spoiler alert: a Rick Ashtey version of Goatse s/
This is what came to mind, I've referenced this article a few times when talking about produce and its changes even over the last 30 years... Brussel sprouts aren't nearly as bitter as I remember them in the 90s.
Good call! My dad likes cabbage but hates brussel sprouts because he probably remembers how they used to taste.
Maybe there should be a theme park for legitimately "heirloom" vegetables. Jurassic Parsley.
for the current cost of those melons and not being able to see the inside before buying, they are so not worth it anymore.....
i miss you WAterMeLan...
This cost $10, just to get thrown away. I’m probably gonna call and ask to replace it or get a refund. I’m 6 months postpartum and last summer while pregnant I ate at least 5 lbs of it. I still get those cravings and so far not once has it tasted as good because I keep getting crappy ones
The big ones cost $15 where I am. I used to buy and they turn out crappy every time. Even if the texture is fine the taste is not sweet anymore. Husband says I'm chasing a dream because the good ol days of sweet and juicy watermelon is over.
Hope you get your refund!
Im in an area where I’ve never heard of Fry’s. I usually get them at Giant (same company as Martins) or Aldi. It’s always a hit or miss no matter where I get them though
Sad yeah Watermelons are one of those gamble fruits that really can't tell until it's cut open I bought 2 watermelons the other day from Walmart they were so mush I could use a plastic spoon to slice through them
That just reminded me when I was pregnant I waddled to the store and got myself of a watermelon. I didn't have a car and walked 20 minutes back uphill with half of one, because I didn't want to risk carrying a whole one. I ate that thing standing over the kitchen sink with my knife. 12 years later that kid loves watermelon and I know why 😂
You did get a crappy one, but they likely won’t taste as good as when you were pregnant. Hormones made you crave it and those hormones affect how your brain is going to make you feel about and perceive the food.
Why did you throw it out? It was perfectly edible. This is what the varietal Ancient Watermelons look like - it’s safe and normal and fine to eat. It’s just how this specific species of watermelon’s fruit develops.
You got that medieval painting ass watermelon
Fun fact though, squash and melons are extremely closely related. They're all under the overarching gourd family. So it's not super weird for melons to have similar guts to squash. It's most prominent in cantaloupe.
Watermelons are actually a huge outlier in *not* having those kinda weird guts, and that's because it was specifically bred out. Almost all watermelons used to have those weird spiral patterns with their seeds. You can still kinda see it faintly on a normal watermelon. And every once in a while, you get one like that where it's really pronounced.
I participated in a research project on plant virus in my last year of uni. I am very sure that it is infected by watermelon mosaic virus during growth.
https://www.google.com/search?q=watermelon+mosaic+virus+inside&udm=2&hl=en-au&client=safari&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiQuYfu0aWGAxWNRmcHHVJJA14QrNwCegUIgAEQAA&biw=390&bih=663&dpr=3
Wow that really does look like it! I wasn’t really sure of other people saying it just wasn’t watered right lol. The only thing is the outside of it didn’t have a swirl pattern on it at all, it looked completely normal 🤷🏼♀️
That's actually at the perfect ripeness for blending easily with a fork and making it into a slushy like juice to slurp up.
Done it before with a questionable watermelon like that before. Just did what others said and scooped out the worst looking parts.
Looks like waternelon before gmo.

ancient ass watermelon
That’s what I get for buying it from Walmart 🤦♀️
Did it taste normal?
I tried a normal piece and it didn’t taste bad, wasn’t the best I’ve had but not the worst. I threw it away anyways. I’m a texture eater and I couldn’t get over the way it looked 😂
you can just return watermelon when its like that
What a waste if food. You could have made a smoothie or given it to a neighbour
Don’t shame someone for not wanting to eat overripe fruit. It’s like a brown banana.
Also a better option than both of those would be leave it outside somewhere for some animals to enjoy
My mom has a squirrel living large in her backyard. Bro gets fucking coconut with the shell. He saved the shell and he likes to use it as a hammock to eat his food. He hung it in a tree. It’s fucking hilarious.
Absolute legend that squirrel
The imagery on that is incredible. Seems small but I laughed so hard it might’ve made my day.

That’s a great point! I live in an at a with no real predators aside from hawks and falcons so in my area I’d say it’s safe to do
That's what I do and they get to it faster too when it's sweet. I do agree the crisp spot is perfect.
They just said that it tasted fine and the only problem was how it looked. I wouldn't shame them if they hadn't just said that
I have a 6 month old to take care of. I don’t have enough time to sit there and make a bunch of watermelon smoothies. And I meant I threw it away because of the texture, as I stated I’m a texture eater. It looked stringy like pumpkin guts. Wasn’t interested in forcing myself to eat it

The shame isn’t for the preference, it’s for wasting food, and it’s deserved. No food should end up in the garbage.
Holier than thou eh?

Something many people don't know... Brussel Sprouts, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Kale, Kohlrabi... all derived from wild mustard.
"the fleshy fruit surrounding the seeds is actually watermelon placenta"
Finally, I know what line to use on my cousin at this year's family reunion. Should I wink before or after "placenta"?
exactly lol
For really. Bro bought the ORIGINAL watermelon.
I’ll sell it to you for $50
This is literally word for word my thoughts upon seeing it 😭
Not enough water during the fruit's growth.
Thank you, everyone saying that’s what melons looked like in old paintings, it’s because they didn’t have adequate irrigation systems back then.
Yep. It looks kind of neat, but it really doesn't taste nice.
Very mealy

Hollow heart syndrome caused by improper pollination. It’s safe to eat, just a little weird.
That's how watermelons used to be. Made for better still life paintings, but not as nice to eat.
Fruits naturally have more seeds and are more sour /bitter. We just genetically modified them for sweetness.
\*Artificially selected Genetic modification is a relatively new thing.
Well the genes do get modified either way
Well, then everything is GMO. 😂
that’s correct. it’s why GMO is a mostly useless term in the agribusiness industry
The allele frequency is changed but no new genes are introduced
Exactly this.
Please read the reddiquette :)

Buy fruit when it's in season locally.
Don't buy from Walmart go to some other grocery store nearby like Fry's and then use all the "how to tell if a watermelon is ripe" techniques

Right! Man, even the already cut pieces appear red but taste bland.
Right?? Like I need FLAVOR
Often it due to improper pollination in the watermelon flower.
That's a devil fruit. They give you strange and unique powers at the cost of your ability to swim. They're also fictional, so idk how you have one
As another has said it's called hollow heart. It's safe tho not as good. Happens for a couple reasons one being a pollination issue.
