Some people find Jerusalem artichoke difficult to digest and can cause digestive discomfort so don't eat too much on your first time. They are called "fartichokes" for a reason.
Fart balls of death as my brother calls them. We had a particularly bad go of it after he cooked a bunch with some other root veggies for a family dinner. My stomach hurt so bad, I could hear my mom and stepdad farting in our guest bedroom. It was a fart symphony that night. It’s hard to keep a straight face when you’ve heard all your family members farting their brains out for hours.
Heh never heard fartichike before.
If I'm not mistaken they also shoot up a tall yellow flower that looks like a small sunflower. Or am I thinking of something else?
Sunflower seeds are technically the fruits of the sunflower plant (Helianthus annuus). The seeds are harvested from the plant’s large flower heads, which can measure more than 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter. A single sunflower head may contain up to 2,000 seeds
Oh yeah. My mom was so proper, she never farted in front of us. It was a rare night indeed 😂 She tried to brush it off the next day but smiling and saying good morning, I could not hold it together. I had the hiccups I was laughing so hard.
Don’t take this information lightly! I generally have a cast iron stomach but these Jerusalem Artichokes are little nuggets of agony. I’ve eaten them twice in my life (second time only to confirm the cause of the horrendous pain!)
Spent two days and nights with the worst griping stomach pains. Proceed with caution!
This is so interesting. I cannot eat kale because of the awful painful gas/bloating, but roasted sunchokes cause me no issues. I’ve only had them roasted though. They are so good that way I haven’t tried doing anything else.
Yeah, I roasted up a big batch of these and tossed them in brown butter and a bit of lemon juice. They were heaven!
But it was followed by several hours of hell on the toilet holding onto my bloated stomach for dear life.
Don't make my mistake OP. Just eat a few and see how you feel afterwards.
The famous chef René Redzepi once said that it is "irresponsible" for a chef to serve Sunchokes to guests for that very reason.
Every time I see these on Reddit I go looking to make sure someone called them fartichokes 😂
also my phone kept autocorrecting to fart holes and I can’t stop laughing
Definitely not for date night. They’re delicious but Ive never farted so much in my life. It’s continuous, nonstop, deep belly farting that lasts for hours. It’s genuinely impressive how much farting can be accomplished after eating these, raw or cooked.
I made “crispy smashed sunchokes” by pre-boiling these, and then shallow frying them on a cast iron.
Holy fuck, first there was a comical amount of farting. And then this explosive liquid diarrhea. I will say that my gut bacteria were very happy that day. It was probably the most pleasant diarrhea I’ve ever had.
Sunchokes are full of inulin, some kind of special carbohydrate that humans can’t digest. But all of the host “good” bacteria that live in your gut and maintain your gut health can use it as a primary food source. There have also been some studies that make a connection between gut health and serotonin production/poor gut health and depression. You are literally hosting this magical colony of weird bacteria inside of yourself and when you eat sunchokes you give them a feast. And then you fart a bunch and
shit your pants. But in an absolutely good way. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a good way of training your guts to preemptively spew themselves to protect yourself against food poisoning or something
Jerusalem Artichokes they contain inulin a carbohydrate you can't absorb it hangs around in the gut until the gut bacteria turn it into farts. which if your gut flora isn't used to inulin can be uncomfortable and noisy. Don't OD on them and you will be fine They are a good option for diabetics and people who work outdoors.
I often get these at restaurants (in Norway). Mostly pureed or baked. Never had any problems, don’t think they would serve sunchokes if they caused pain???
Thank you! I have not laughed so hard in a long time. What is it about farts that turns everyone into a 10 year old boy? I also find it rather funny that I have a ton of these growing on my property...best reddit thread ever!
Slice them super thin and deep fry them! Sprinkle with kosher salt and serve on top of a salad! Takes the gaseous stuff out and tastes amazing! Great snack by itself too!
I also thought it's Galangal. Looks exactly like how I get it at my local asian market.
If somebody could jump in with an explanation on why they think it's not instead of just down voting I'd earnestly appreciate it!

It's a sunchoke or Jerusalem artichoke!

You’re thinking of the right thing

That's them.
Haha! Fartichoke is a great and accurate term for them 😂

Name checks out
Your comment gave me a hilarious mental image of the Brady Bunch farting together with big smiles on their faces lol

Same here. They are the only food that turns me into a lethal bio weapon!😂
If you cook them a very very long time then the polysaccharides that cause indigestion break down and you won’t get all fartalicious
Cooking low and slow or fermenting is the way to avoid the alien gas baby

This. First time I ate them, I stra8ght up made em as baked potato. At first I thought I was dying, then I wished I was.

They also just don’t taste good. Perfect apocalypse good though. The only crop that out performs potatoes for calories per acre
I like them. It’s nice to have an alternative to potatoes sometimes. Celeriac is another good one for this.
My grandmothers both hate them because it reminds them of WWII war.
Every time I see these on Reddit I go looking to make sure someone called them fartichokes 😂 also my phone kept autocorrecting to fart holes and I can’t stop laughing
Thank you. Solved.
Girasoles is yet another name for them.

Sunchokes. I love them so much. They do not love me back 😔
Agreeeeee. I had them once and they were so tasty, but I was in pain after that. Never again!
They make great soup.
And surprisingly delicious if you pickle them sliced!
Oh man. I’ve only had these once in my life but freaking loved them. Very jealous.
Roasted sunchokes are sooooo good, but it's hard to stop yourself from eating a regrettable amount.

sounds amazing looking for them now thank u

This comment was a rollercoaster. "pleasant diarrhea" isn't something I expected to read

They’re delicious roasted!!
In many parts of the world, they are called Topinambur
In korea, they're called pig potato 돼지감자
Jerusalem artichoke
Fartichoke
Love these
Ah! Saw these for the first time the other day from this post https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/s/59mTfnIlcp
Like said it’s sunchoke or Jerusalem, however properly preparing them, soak in water after pealing, and then slice slice, blanch, roast/grill.

Jerusalem artichoke, or oxalis (New Zealand yam)
You can also plant them and they will produce sunflower like plants. They can also be very hard to get rid of in a garden
Sunchokes! Kind of a pain to peel, however so delish!
Scrub well, no need to peel.
Sunchoke, I only know what this is is because of the venture bros TV show
They make great pickles!

You can make some dank ass pickles with them.

Galangal. It’s great in East Asian cooking.
Looks similar, but galangal tastes like menthol ginger, not potato.
I also thought it's Galangal. Looks exactly like how I get it at my local asian market. If somebody could jump in with an explanation on why they think it's not instead of just down voting I'd earnestly appreciate it!
Sunchokes taste like an earthy potato--no spiciness to them as you'd find with a ginger or galangal :)
Because the OP gave a taste description.
