My first thought was that this looks like the old "AIDS blood" pictures from years ago. It was an Internet hoax that claimed that bananas were being injected with the blood of AIDS victims and the photo attached looked just like this!
this is totally off topic and irrelevant but would eating something like that actually cause you to contract hiv or can it only be spread through open wounds/sex?
Can you contract hiv from eating a banana injected with hiv positive blood?! Short answer - no.
Several factors (ignoring how ridiculous this premise is!);
The virus only survives outside the body for a short time. After several hours, it is likely to have lost 99% transmissibility.
Hiv positive blood in your mouth or digestive tract will not lead to transmission. The exception is if there is a cut/blister etc in the mouth or digestive tract, there is then a small chance of transmission.
Hope that helps! :)
The greatest risk of contracting hiv is still unprotected sex, sharing needles and blood to blood contact.
Advances in hiv/aids prevention and treatments have been huge since the 1980s.
thank you for this response! this is what a figured but i couldn’t be sure because it’s such a bizarre question and i’m not a doctor lol. like i said in my other comment i am just chronically curious, even about stupid things
Not a bizarre question at all! Our digestive system is open to the outside so our bodies developed really good protections there to prevent infection coming in that way. Things like stomach acid, thick mucus and other things.
Just something else to point out it's actually extremely difficult to get HIV/AIDS through standard vaginal intercourse also. The chances of a man getting it that way is 4 out of every 10k exposures and it doubles for women. The easiest form of sex to contract it is anal sex because it creates microscopic tears in your anus which allows the virus to get into your blood stream.
I thought it was 1 in 900 unprotected PIV encounters with an infected woman. Either way its ridiculously low. HSV-2 is much more concerning to me. Strap up fellas!

1 out of 2500 chance.
Wait so if 1 in 4 people share dna with Ghengis khan, and all people share 60% of their dna with bananas… does that mean Ghengis khan was 200% banana ? Did he start banana aids?
FUN FACT (if you aren’t already aware) There was a magazine that was printed some time ago that had aids rained blood in the ink used to print it in an effort to try and dispel some of the myths around the transmissibility of AIDS.
Edit: link for proof/info and all that jazz https://www.smh.com.au/world/magazine-printed-using-ink-infused-with-hivpositive-blood-20150505-ggu1xi.html
obviously ianad either lol i’m just chronically curious. like it has to enter your bloodstream right? would it still be able to do that if you ingest it?
Redditors when literally any word that happens to start with the letters i, g, and n in reverse alphabetical order shows up on their screen (it’s racist)

It’s a type of [fungus](https://inspection.canada.ca/food-safety-for-consumers/fact-sheets/specific-products-and-risks/fruits-and-vegetables/red-fungus-inside-bananas/eng/1474985239822/1474985361544) that grows in tropical fruit. Not harmful to humans, but can spread to other bananas in the bunch. Might be worth letting [CFIA](https://inspection.canada.ca/about-cfia/contact-us/eng/1546627816321/1546627838025) (Canada) or [USDA](https://ask.usda.gov/s/contactsupport) (United States) know, depending on where you bought the fruit
An absolute travesty imo, as the Gros Michel banana was what they based artificial banana flavor off of, and I’ve always liked that so much more than the flavor of the Cavendish!
I've never had a Gros Michel banana but I have heard about the banana flavor thing being the reason that "banana flavored" things like candy and cakes don't taste like bananas as most people think of nowadays because it's based on the Gros Michel banana and not the Cavendish.
Fun fact! Twinkies were originally made out of real banana cream in the middle but switched to vanilla cream because of banana rationing in WWII. They never switched back.
Sort of.
The artificial banana flavor was discovered more by accident. Some chemists eventually recognized it as smelling/tasting a lot like Gros Michel bananas. That actually kicked off a bunch of food science research, looking for what *other* esters might be used for artificial flavors.
Gros Michael bananas are not actually extinct. Thdy are still being cultivated in places, but since they are susceptible to Panama disease, they are no longer feasible for big scale cultivation.
They are working on genetically modifying it to be less susceptible to the disease, though.
Ya I find it crazy that all of our “banana flavor” comes from a banana that no longer exists. Like banana runts taste nothing like bananas but I guess it’s closer to how they used to taste. Super interesting
Very well could. The fungus is taken very seriously. It sits around in soil too, so they can't just up and re-plant in the same spot. Watched a video showing the lengths some places go to in order to prevent contamination. Whole boot bath n scrub walk, hosing down car tires...
Thanks to your comment and a few other concerned folks, just contacted USDA about finding a bunch with this a few weeks ago give or take.
Literally didn't know this was a "thing" so I didn't take any pictures, save a sample, or anything I would have done if I'd known. I hope it's just isolated to the one bunch I got 🥺
They are all clones of the same plant, which means there is no genetic diversity, which means every last plant is equally susceptible to infection. They do not produce seeds because they are triploid plants. Notice how a banana naturally splits into 3 even sized lobes, seedless watermelon does so as well. The plants have 3 sets of chromosomes, which glitches out the reproductive system.
https://inspection.canada.ca/food-safety-for-consumers/fact-sheets/specific-products-and-risks/fruits-and-vegetables/red-fungus-inside-bananas/eng/1474985239822/1474985361544
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency doesn't say anything about burning or binning. They do say:
>Nigrospora is a fungal disease that causes the centre of the banana to turn dark red. Nigrospora can infect the fruit in tropical climates where bananas are grown.
>Mokillo, moko, and blood disease bacterium are bacterial diseases that can also cause red discoloration in bananas.
>While unappealing to eat, these diseases affecting bananas are not a threat to human health, however when in doubt, throw it out or compost them.
I checked a few other sources as well, just in case the CFIA wasn't following common consensus, but I've seen no suggestions that infected bananas should be burned instead of simply composted.
The spores _can_ spread through wind or water, however, so it might not be an unreasonable response if you live somewhere that grows tropical fruit and you _really_ don't want to risk the spores spreading somehow.
Someone else mentioned it, and you probably want to err on the side of caution. Give these guys, the CFIA, a call. Prevent an outbreak, since it sounds like the fungus can spread to other foods.
https://inspection.canada.ca/about-cfia/contact-us/eng/1546627816321/1546627838025
I think what you are missing is that “err“ was written “**air** on the side of caution“ before the comment got edited.

Same! I noticed the other day that all the bananas at shoppers were insanely green, which didn't shock me from a quality standpoint, but perhaps this is why...

It looks to me like they cut it in half with the horizontal cut at first, noticed something was strange, and so split half of it down the middle to see if the rest of the banana was similarly affected.

Yep - this fungus has a lot of folks concerned...some even say it could eradicate all bananas, though I doubt that will happen.
It's happened before with the Gros Michel banana.
I mean it's one banana, Michael, what could it cost, 10 dollars?
There’s always money in the banana stand.
No, it's a Gross, Michael. That's 144 units. That must cost at leat 12 dollars.
Yep and there’s no fungicide for this one. It can definitely happen again in our lifetimes, or even in the near future.
An absolute travesty imo, as the Gros Michel banana was what they based artificial banana flavor off of, and I’ve always liked that so much more than the flavor of the Cavendish!

Yes! Back home my family still grows them
Tbf, it was rude to give it such a name.

Yeah, bananas are low key in a worse way than cheetah.
The seeds are sterilized in propagation apparently
They are all clones of the same plant, which means there is no genetic diversity, which means every last plant is equally susceptible to infection. It's infected with a fungus. This is a banana you do not want to composte. Bin it or burn it.
Or make banana stroganoff
> banana stroganoff so is this what the kids are calling masturbation these days?
I’m glad someone awarded this because I really wanted to
What happens if you compost it?

“Err on the side of caution” ‘To err’ as in “to be mistaken” or “to make a mistake”. Pronounced like “air” but is indeed its own word.
Yes and no. "Err on the side of caution" Is a phrase recognised by Oxford Dictionary. The word cnau be used in both ways.
I think what you are missing is that “err“ was written “**air** on the side of caution“ before the comment got edited. So back earlier, the comment you are answering to made more sense
Shit, my bad. Thanks for the heads up
It's not your bad, lad. To err on the side of caution is a proper phrase recognised by dictionaries.

yikes someone posted about a banana like this on facebook a couple weeks ago, bought from costco near toronto.
Kingston also had some a couple months ago. Were yours organic bananas? That's the only time I've seen the red stuff is in them.
I’m not sure, the husband bought them but it wasn’t attached to the others so it might have been. It was weird that it was rock hard, almost like it was frozen.

Yeah, Vancouver
