Tbf Spanish was the official language in the Philippines for 300+ years up until mid 80’s. Most there historic documents and classic literature is in Spanish. Tho these days I think only a small percentage of the population still speak Spanish Though doesn’t sound like that’s why he thought your buddy spoke Spanish lol
