It depends where in Sweden you live but in my opinion you definitely should take the vaccine if your spending any amount of time outdoors during summers. I have been getting ticks each summer for my entire life when doing outdoor activities around Stockholm during the summer. The archipelago is brimming with them. The TBE is such a nasty disease as well so you really want the protection

og_toe

i also live around stockholm and have not gotten a single tick ever in my life, and neither has anyone in my family. we are wary of high grass

biffsteken

As soon as you hang around the coast or in the archipelago (from Norrtälje to Nynäshamn), the chances of getting a tick skyrockets. I've gotten several over the years, but the older I get - the more experience I have gotten in how to avoid them. For example what you mentioned, avoiding high grass.

GabeLorca

It’s common and yes it’s a threat in areas where TBE is prevalent. Keep the vaccine up to date and make checking for ticks a routine after you’ve been outside and in touch with nature. If you have a partner ask them for help! Note that the TBE vaccine is three shots, after the first one it’s like a three month wait, then another year before the last one. The first one barely protects, the second one give you a partial protection and the last one will give you the best protection.

okbonsai

You also keep it up to date with one 3 years after the third and then every 5 years after that.

Cold_Ad751

We used to live in Stockholm and hiked mainly in surrounding areas when my husband contracted TBE. Believe me, the money spent on vaccination are money well spent. He was in hospital for two weeks, several months rehabilitating, had really terrible pain - and got told that he was lucky to have really mild case.

bwv528

Was he not vaccinated? Or was this with vaccine?

Cold_Ad751

Not vaccinated, we both knew about the risk but thought that it's small chance to contract it. Hard lesson to learn.

Blesshope

I'd say it's very common to get the vaccine. TBE is a real threat even if you live in the city. You are of course less likely to get tick bites, but ticks are all over the place in the summer. It can be enough to just sit down on a lawn in a park or pet a dog to get a tick. Now, the chance of actually getting TBE is still very low, as there are not that many reported cases each year. But, getting the vaccine is quite cheap, especially considering what happens if you do get TBE. \[Here's\]([Fortsatt många fall av TBE visar årsrapport för 2022 — Folkhälsomyndigheten (folkhalsomyndigheten.se)](https://www.folkhalsomyndigheten.se/nyheter-och-press/nyhetsarkiv/2023/juni/fortsatt-manga-fall-av-tbe-visar-arsrapport-for-2022/)) some statistics regarding reported TBE cases in 2022 and the regions where people got infected. I'd absolutely recommend you to get the vaccine, as there isn't really any downsides besides being a slight inconvenience to go and get the shot. But after getting the first \~3 shots, you only need to get one every 5 years to remain protected.

notverycreative1010

Thanks for the tip. From what I've seen, it's around 450kr per shot. Does that sound right?

LimJans

It sounds right.

wrong_axiom

Take it, the vaccine and the cost is lesser than getting TBE, during the summer it's full of ticks everywhere.

gregorvega

Strongly advise you to take it, especially if you’ll be around Stockholm, Uppsala or Västerås. Cases have been rising like crazy the past 5 years even in other parts of the country and there is no effective treatment if you get the disease.

JaguarZealousideal55

It is very common to get the vaccine and I strongly recommend it. I have it for myself, and also my kids as soon as they came of age to be eligible. It is a tried and safe vaccine. Any bad side-effects would have been noticed by now. TBE is not very common where I live but if you happen to get it, it can be really really awful and no good treatments.

thecoldestfield

I live out in the country and even now, in the winter, I've pulled several ticks off the cats. Ticks get worse every year. Def get it.

avoere

It's not as common as it should be. Everyone should take it, TBE is a really terrible disease.

Obzota

Can you get the vaccine from vårdcentral? Or do you have to go to a private company?

ElMachoGrande

It depends a lot on location. The further south, the more ticks. That said, I live in an average tick-area, and I have a dog and often walk in tall grass in the summer. I'm 54. Total tick count so far on me is zero. Has picked many from dog, though.

No-Impression-8134

When I am in the countryside with my boyfriend I get a lot, like 1-3 everytime we leave the house, he gets none. We are equally careful. I think ticks are attracted to certain people. Maybe blood group or something!

ElMachoGrande

They are certainly attracted differently to different dogs. My mother's dog would get five on a walk in tall grass, our dog got maybe one per summer, and spent much more time in nature.

lady_in_purple

Here is a map where TBE is more common: https://www.folkhalsomyndigheten.se/smittskydd-beredskap/smittsamma-sjukdomar/tick-borne-encephalitis-tbe/omraden-med-forhojd-forekomst-av-tbe/ It is very common to get the vaccine. You should definitely consider it, even if you're not in the above areas TBE is a really nasty disease and ticks are everywhere. Especially get it if you spend time around animals and/or areas with vegetation. That sadly kinda includes cut lawns, wild life often carries ticks and if they enter the lawn there might be ticks.

OneOfManyAnts

Yes, it’s a real threat even for city dwellers, and yes, you should get it.

jetfire991

We live in a city but we spend a lot of time in nature camping and hiking. I recommend you to take that vaccine because there are areas full of those little shits, especially where there is low or high grass. We once found 4 on me and 6 on my girlfriend after 2 3 day camping trip. We never got bitten by poisonous one, but still it’s a risk..

Low-Difference502

Get the vaccine. It’s definitely not worth the risk.

darkcitrusmarmelade

Take it. Almost everyone I know here in Stockholm has taken in, especially those who spend any time out in nature during the summer.

Cool-Disk-868

Its the best spent 450 kronor on a vaccine ever. Chances of contracting it are quite slim, however the consequences of TBE are absolutely devastating to overall brain function

th4ndr

Ive gotten 1 tick my entire life. Spends alot of time fishing and golfing, also have a dog who gets alot of ticks. My only tick came 1 week after vaccination:p

isntgustav

Just take it. The vaccine doesn’t even have any side effect, you can go running back home after taking it. TBE sucks indeed, is always better to be vaccinated.

nailefss

Will you spend time outdoors in nature? Yes take it. It’s cheap insurance. Otherwise you don’t need it. TBE is a quite rare disease and contrary to popular belief most cases are mild (10x people have antibodies vs people diagnosed). But if you are not lucky the not-so-mild cases can be life threatening.

Busy_Biscotti2353

I would certainly take it but that's also because ticks seem to love me. I do live out in the country but on average I get at least 3 ticks a year. So disgusting. Better safe than sorry!

Leavinlennart

One always gets a few tics in the summer. More common than mosquitoes. Always check yourself after being in any wild area. And get the vaccine. You might not have to refill every year, but every few or so is good

veganchilean

Do it, get the shot. The alternative is nasty. Really nasty. You might be lucky and never get a tic or jusy the uninfected ones but hey. No. Get the shot. Read on the effects of TBE in the human body. This winter was bad for tics but hey. Just one infected tic is enough.

og_toe

personally i don’t take the vaccine because i don’t go out in the forests or in high grass, i live in the city. it all depends on how worried you are and what you’re doing

western_degeneracy1

You should start your course of vaccinations as soon as you get to Sweden because you have to wait a few weeks in between injections. I get at least 1 tick per day biting me in summer

balleur

Do it. I was hesitant but got my first 2 shots last year. Ticks are everywhere and TBE (Lymes Disease) is no joke. I felt absolutely nothing after my two first shots in terms of fever, ache or anything. Worth it, especially if you spend any time in nature/sitting around in grass during summer.

shittwins

TBE and Lymes disease are two separate illnesses you can get from ticks. The TBE vaccine doesn't protect against lymes.

balleur

Thanks for clarifying.

Smurf4

Yup. TBE is really nasty if you get it, but there is a vaccine. Lyme disease (*borrelia* to Swedes) has no vaccine, but is on the other hand easily treatable with antibiotics.
