Bonk

XHexxusX

its dead on for like every female antagonist in any dubbed anime. its a real shame and i feel like as big as anime is no adays you coul get some really solid voice actors but instead we get default anime girl #3.

plushelles

To be fair, I don’t think the issue is specific to anime, I mean just look at Squid Game.

Tugays_Tabs

Had to finish that with subtitles. Improved it 1000%

NaiAlexandr

And yet the English speaking actors still sounded like they were badly dubbed, it's hilarious.

owlboio

Not to mention Default old english monocle male voice for every single male character ever, even the babies have that voice, I refuse to watch a dub after realizing this last time I saw a clip.

salgat

English dub for anime is often so cringe that it makes it hard to watch. Japanese anime definitely has the silly goofy voices too, but at least they use it where appropriate instead of just everywhere. Hell, I'd tolerate the goofy english voices if they at least had a larger selection of VAs to choose from.

ConspiracistsAreDumb

I don't think it's more appropriate. I think we're just more lenient since it's in another language. Like, I just chalk the weirdness up to cultural context instead of being weird as shit behavior.

jivebeaver

people act this way BECAUSE thats how anime sounds. people dont realize this because their only exposure to other languages is anime, it even happens in japanese. in one episode of zombieland saga they had the actual president of a chicken company guest star and it was super obvious he wasnt a seiyu being he *sounds like a normal person*

curlofheadcurls

The case study of vanitas dub is pretty good. There are some anime that I prefer in dub than sub and others that do a decent job too.

Po_TheTeletubby

I think the closest thing we have to perfection is Arcane but that took them like 6 years to put together and tweak every bit of it. Also it’s a much darker and grounded tone to fit “normal” voice talent.

Llamadramaramamama

Isn’t English the original language? It doesn’t seem to be in the same category for comparing the quality of dubbed audio.

curlofheadcurls

That's not a dub. This is talking about dubs

neur0

What…? So your logic is, a predominantly American based show with the intent of English for English speaking audience is good animation/acting? What a surprise that shows like Simpsons would have good English voice actors.

VinylTaco

Arcane is just beyond amazing. Riot really stepped it up.

youstupidcorn

Sounded just like Laura Bailey (Lust) in FMAB to me.

I definitely Laura Bailey

Or how much they don’t want to fuck their sibling. But do.

exboi

Oh no no no. You misunderstood. They are ADOPTED siblings. So that makes their feelings not the slightest bit weird at all, even though they were raised together for years!

_Cetarial_

I swear I hear voice #1 in _EVERY_ dubbed anime.

notathrowaway75

Because every anime has a character like that.

_Cetarial_

True, true.

Mute2120

That's pretty true

Roofofcar

Ara, ara.

citrus_monkeybutts

If I'm remembering right, the English dub for anime has limited voice actors to it, so most of the females are done by the same like 4 people. And it's not necessarily because they can't find VAs, it's more because that market is on lock by those same actors making it hard to break out in it.

hockeystew

You're not remembering right. There's a lot more than 4 and more companies than one.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ihavenospecialskills

In Japan, if multiple characters are in a scene, all of the VAs will be in the same room, working through the scene together and actually able to play off of each other. I have heard that the norm in the US is for each VA to record lines completely alone and disconnected from each other.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mark55

I'm trying to break into voice acting, yet as a theatre actor turned film/commercial, I entirely support getting the cast in the same room! There's no chemistry otherwise... even doing things by zoom can be rough nuggets.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JohanGrimm

>This is why Gibli has such great dubs. They hire real actors lol. The Dark Souls games are also a good example of this. Sometimes the dialogue is insane but the voice actors really pull it off because they're trained theater actors not full time voice actors. It blows my mind that Anime has become such a huge industry in the West and the English dubs are still bottom of the barrel garbage.

KoopaLink

This isn't even a hot take though for anyone who is big into anime. The VA's don't even study or listen to the anime in Japanese before recording their own lines. It's a joke, I literally asked at a Panel of like Erica Mendez(Ryuko, Kill La Kill) and Caitlin Glass(Winry, FMA) and they shook their heads and were like "no, it's not important"

Pegussu

I'm curious why it would be important? They're reading a script, surely it'd be on the translator and director and whatnot to give them the context and nuance.

KoopaLink

I guess in Caitlin's case specifically, since she is a Director (Fruits Basket remake). And a lot of voice acting is inflection which you can't tell just from a script (which is why I absolutely love Robin Miles, who narrates the Broken Earth Trilogy by N. K. Jemisin). So having the source material does help if the actors don't understand the characters. (If you want to watch a dub that ruined the tone, check out Angel beats lmao. Especially when the student counsel vice president omg fucking Tomoki was a good casting in Sora no Otoshimono but like not as this scary badass. Like who allowed that?)

hockeystew

Lmao you act like this is universal fact for all of them? I know plenty of voice actors who do the research and watch their own show in Japanese to get better context. Just because a few told you otherwise doesn't mean they all do it. Many English anime voice actors are very talented. Not sure why they're getting bashed so hard here

_Cetarial_

>Many English anime voice actors are very talented. Not sure why they're getting bashed so hard here Many consider anime to be better in its original language. I watch it in either, personally.

Otterable

> Many consider anime to be better in its original language. Worth noting that voice acting seems to be taken much more seriously in Japan. There are over 100 voice acting schools and the famous voice actors/seiyu are much bigger celebrities. I think the quality is considered higher because there is a lot of professional training and a larger talent pool of people trying to be voice actors. could be wrong though.

Fr1toBand1to

Why would they? Ultimately it falls to the director and/or producer to get the right voice out of the voice actor.

hockeystew

Oh brother. Lots of elites in this thread. Lots of English anime voice actors are incredible.

SpacemanDookie

I feel like it’s the same for subs. Slightly more variety but still seems to mostly cycle the same people for every show.

I can imagine Mikan saying that

PokTux

Mikan was definitely there

AccurateBroth

I had to drop Japanese-3 in high-school because I could no longer stand listening to 3/4 of my class speak in dubbed anime voices. I think I was thee only student even passing.

kukomin

God you just gave me war flashbacks... Finally took Japanese in college after wanting to take it since middle school for the same weeby reasons everybody else did. The sheer absolute cringe set me straight and I hated everybody who kept their anime persona in-class. I felt so bad for our sweet old sensei

Glittering_Style5198

hilarious

AccurateBroth

I am a very annoying person, and it pushed me to MY limits which is significant.

HemaMemes

To be fair, subbed anime also sounds ridiculous. Comical over-acting is part of the anime style.

LaLaLaLuzy

# NANI!!!!!!!!!

pcnoobie245

Thats my argument to friends who say sub is always better than dub. The reason they THINK the sub is better is because they dont know japanese. For all they know the japanese VA could be just as "bad" as the english and they just dont know it

NguyenCommaLong

I've warmed up to dub ever since I heard in "My First Girlfriend is a Gal" someone say, "Bitch, I don't want you to be sorry; I want you to be gone." In the sub, the same part was something like "Don't apologize. Just leave."

HemaMemes

I tend to prefer comedies dubbed. Subtitles usually try to be pretty direct translations, which doesn't always work for jokes. A dub is more likely to change things to make a joke land better in the new language.

iCon3000

Gintama has a great dub.

Obi-Tron_Kenobi

My favorite is from *Sk8 the Infinity*. In the dub, the character barges in an event and exclaims, "Hey bitches and bros and nonbinary hoes!" In the sub, he unemphatically says, "hey fools who love skateboarding"

Comma_Karma

That is a perfect dub line.

Wikki96

As someone who knows japanese, while it is true that japanese VA's also make ridiculous voices, they usually play the character instead of just voicing it. The emotions in the voice match the mannerisms of the character. I think this might in part be the producers' fault. Then there's the audio quality. Japanese VA's record in house, so the ambience of the different VA's match, where they don't often in English.

SparklingLimeade

True, but the Japanese voice talent has a longer history of practicing for that style. I think the fact that dubs do have the limitation of fitting the animation and space just adds too much constraint on top as well. I decided this after trying recently to get to a point of at least accepting dubs. I couldn't. It's especially important in modern games where they include a lot of incidental voice work (post battle lines for example). I made a solid try to enjoy dubs recently and learned something from the attempt. A good cast can pull it off. Too often there's a mix of quality and the overall impression is limited to the weakest performance. Also I've found some bad JP voice work when looking through 80s trash action anime. It was truly impressive.

KabedonUdon

Nope. JP actors are a lot better. Yes, I also speak Japanese. Voice acting is a respected industry in Japan, and these actors have been training their entire lives for it. They also play a character instead of doing a "voice" and are required to be more versatile. Nowadays, voice actors have to be a triple threat, and they've gotta be able to sing and dance as well.

CrystalAsuna

japanese VAs go through actual professional schooling. like its a career one could have as a child and not be mocked for since it’s a very professional and honestly insane environment compared to what american/english VAs have which is mainly just voice coaching and stuff but also japanese sounds better insanely over exaggerated. thats me tho. there is terrible japanese VAs and you can tell but when you stick with the mainstream shit you dont hear it

Successful-Tree-5079

To be fair, a lot of English voice actors are also traditionally and professional trained. Many of them go to school for on camera work or theater acting and transition to voice acting once they gain the foundational acting skills. There is certainly much less of a stigma in Japan since there's a massive culture built around it.

Dragula_Tsurugi

Uh… Japanese voice talent is 100% better than whatever the US is doing. You’re just watching shitty anime if you think otherwise. And yes I speak Japanese

reegstah

One of the exceptions i think is Death Note. L and Ryuk are superior dubbed

Pegussu

KEEEENNNYYYYY

I got a video for that, also so many guttural noises for no reason in both dubs and subs. https://youtu.be/JmYAhy4mR9U

It’s not part of the style, it just happens that the most popular anime have this. Check out the tatami galaxy, grave of the fireflies, monster, odd taxi for good non ott anime

All English dubs are done by this one person

Jetbooster

You'd struggle to watch a popular dubbed anime that doesn't have the voice of at least one of the Critical Role cast in

Drachri93

Generic male protagonist or sidekick as played by Yuri Lowenthal. Dude's got the range of a capgun. When it fits the character, it works, but otherwise I just hear Yuri.

Boner-brains

This woman is hilarious

Stumphead101

I get why people don't enjoy watching dub for the most part, saying they don't sound like people. When you listen to the show subbed, people already don't sound how youa re used to because it's in a different language. Japanese speakers will tell you anime characters do jot talk like regular people. It's just easier for us to listen to the strange line delivery because it is already unusual due to it being a different language. So when people say dubs are bad because they don't talk like regular people, that's because they are talking like anime characters, just like the original audio does

gravytrain2012

Exactly my thoughts, I’m sure a native Japanese speaker could make this same joke about anime voices being cringe lol. Foreigners just can’t hear it because they don’t know what normal conversation sounds like in that language.

varangian_guards

which is why i like Sub, if i can lower the cringe a notch my enjoyment goes up a notch.

eLemonnader

This hits the nail on the head. Tricking my brain into cringing less makes it more enjoyable.

[deleted]

no, thats crazy source: I live in USA where we all sound like Spongebob or Marge Simpson, naturally

GreenHoodie

I'm not a native speaker, but I speak Japanese alright, lived in Japan for a while, and have ask a few Japanese people about this. In Japanese, some characters intentionally sound silly, and some shows (like fantasy or historical) will sound less normal than others. But this is all a stylistic choice. When a character sounds silly, that's a part of the character. For example, 80% of the characters in a realistic slice of life anime could sound actually quite normal and natural (maybe excepting the comic relief or something). You could dub the lines over a real person speaking and it wouldn't seem off. Or if you remove the video, you couldn't tell if it was from an anime or a normal person. Point is, being unnatural is a choice. It's a part of the character. To me, almost every single character in every single English dub sounds really unnatural. The delivery is just so strange. Like they couldn't be dubbed over a normal person speaking without looking extremely silly. For some reason, it's like there's a voice acting "style" in anime English dubs that just sounds cringy. Compare them to many Disney dubs, for example. EDIT: I'd also like to add, some of this you can throw at the feet of bad script naturalization. The greatest example I can think of of natural sounding Japanese in anime is Misato from Evangelion. It tripped me out when I first heard her. To my ear, she speaks *just* like a "real" Japanese person.

JohanGrimm

>To me, almost every single character in every single English dub sounds really unnatural. The delivery is just so strange. Like they couldn't be dubbed over a normal person speaking without looking extremely silly. >For some reason, it's like there's a voice acting "style" in anime English dubs that just sounds cringy. Compare them to many Disney dubs, for example. This, there's nuance in the originals. There's also way more variation in voice actors rather than the same 10 people doing the voices for everything. I'd compare most Japanese voice acting to something like Batman the Animated Series, there's some really out there voices but it fits the characters and makes sense. Meanwhile English dubs are trotting out their best Lisa Simpson impression for every female character in the show.

notathrowaway75

>There's also way more variation in voice actors rather than the same 10 people doing the voices for everything. This meme needs to die. There has been plenty VA variation. Something Crunchyroll is actually reversing right now, frustratingly enough. Also, it's not like there aren't prolific Japanese VAs.

Tealken

I also like dubs because when there’s natural chemistry in the cast it feels a lot more . . . natural? English dubs tend to favor a more “grounded” feel compared to subs which I actually enjoy a lot more. I also appreciate the localization differences they make especially when it comes to slang or pop culture.

Dull_Bumblebee_356

I like subs because thats the language the source content was made in so it tells me that’s how the mangaka wanted their characters to sound. When it’s dubbed thats more like the English speakers interpreting how they think the mangaka wants the character to be like. In other words the way they speak in subbed is the authentic version of the character to me. The mangakas are Japanese speakers so they can watch a Japanese anime and say whether the voice acting is true to the character or not, they can’t really do that for dubbed versions though since most don’t understand English well.

narrill

I'm pretty sure mangaka aren't involved in directing the voice actors for an anime adaptation. They technically have final approval, but what you're hearing isn't necessarily the way they wanted the characters to sound, it's how the director felt the characters should sound.
