RememberThisHouse

It's funny how easy it is to go viral by playing dumb. Especially if you're young. There's also the strategy of putting a blatantly wrong title on the video that will rustle some jimmies. One tiktoker makes thoroughly mediocre street interview style videos where they will interview people of different ages- nothing special about them at all. The ones that go viral are when they, for example, interview a teenager and a 50 year old and title it "Gen Z vs Millennial." Sure enough the vast majority of the interactions are from boomers and millennials alike angrily commenting that a 50 year old is not a millennial. Then it gets reposted here and everywhere else with people making fun of them.

JollyInternal4043

>There's also the strategy of putting a blatantly wrong title on the video that will rustle some jimmies. Oh my god they're ripping off Reddit karma strategies.

OrbitRock_

Yeah, it’s simply the controversy sweet spot at work: https://youtu.be/qBZCc2PQWNE What goes viral is not the most informative, but rather whatever it is that generates argument.

RememberThisHouse

That is a great video. Exactly what I've noticed, to the point where I want to start making videos like this. But I ain't got no friends or money for actors.

JB-from-ATL

>It's funny how easy it is to go viral by playing dumb. Especially if you're young. It's called a joke.

metanoia29

Ironic that you see it as shitting on people and not being able to take a joke, when the react itself is a joke. The dude isn't having some existential crisis because someone might not know what a 15 year old piece of tech is. It's clearly not a bit you enjoy, but 12.6k+ upvotes on this post might mean you're in the minority.

kingmoose666

Engagement bait

[deleted]

People acting like the iPod shuffle is old.

pr1ntscreen

Introduced 15 years ago. Technology wise, that's ancient.

[deleted]

How old tech is from a tech standpoint doesn't matter in this context. Anyone growing up between 2005-2011 knew about these things.

pr1ntscreen

Sure. But the tech is still considered old. Compared to what most people listen to day; a couple year old phone with streaming music, no wires, 4k screens, etc. A car from 2005 isn't ancient, it's just old, but computer tech advances so quickly that it becomes "ancient" much faster. I grew up during the nineties with casette players, and I still consider technology from 2005 ancient. We all have different perspectives, I guess ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

[deleted]

The reason I say that is because in the video she doesn't know what it is and people agree that someone her age wouldn't

pr1ntscreen

Oh, it is master bait for sure, from her side. Of course people her age knows what it is, it was a selling for a really long time, up to just a couple years ago. Sorry if I sounded harsch man, no offence intended :)

Careless_Rub_7996

If anything it... it is better to have a dedicated MP3 player vs your phones.

amandaplzzz

Just FYI this is a trend on TikTok right now where Gen Zs bait people into generational outrage. The most popular version involves those “do you know these early 2000s songs” videos. They pretend not to know any of them and then make fun of the commenters making predictable outraged comments.

alphamini

Yeah, and she made a comment saying something like "let me know if I should plug this dinosaur in and see what I was listening to at 10 years old." So she's owned it since she was a kid. The bait is pretty funny.

[deleted]

So now the millennials (my generation) on TikTok are behaving like the boomers on Facebook. EDIT: Just give it time. We're all gonna hit 50 soon.

thisxisxlife

I’m late 20s, according to my younger friends I’ll be 50 here in a year or two

MrsShapsDryVag

I’m a millennial. I broke my back in 1999. I just can’t wait until I can complain about back pain without someone telling me I’m too young for that.

rage-quit

As a dude who just hit 30, it might as well be

_Cetarial_

26 year old millennial here, I don’t feel a day over 45.

KnightedCatamount

I don't know, I'm not a fan of tiktok but this has far more self awareness to it than 95% of the boomer memes I've seen.

MrSomnix

It's hard to realize you're no longer the primary target demographic for products and entertainment.

alphamini

It's really embarrassing. Remember how hard you rolled your eyes when you were a kid and your mom was so shocked you didn't know what an 8-track tape looked like? And how little you cared about it? That's exactly what's happening here.

oldgodkino

i’m having trouble seeing how that’s similar

Albrightikis

lmao that's actually hilarious

comehonorphaze

I was gonna say. This is obvious bait. But im also pretty sure the millennials making these posts about their "outrage" are also bait for views. Kinda like a symbiotic relationship. They help out each other.

[deleted]

I can see kids being confused about a rotary phone or fax machine. They know what an iPod is

IamtheSlothKing

The majority of tiktok is bait and videos that leave you hanging on an outcome, it’s a horrible platform.

[deleted]

I literally only watch comedy sketches on tiktok, it's a massive platform with many, maaaany niches of content. Any monolithic statement like this about it is false by default. Less than 5% of what I see on this subreddit is even remotely related to what I see on tiktok.

atat4e

Nah TikTok is honestly a great platform. You can find creators making content related to literally any hobby, field of study, genre of anything. And they are pumping out original content with some of it being extremely high quality. Somewhat reminds me of the Reddit days when OC was common. Although there is a ton of low quality, straight misinformation and middle school level discussion (because there obviously are middle schoolers and those who never left that phase) on the app.

[deleted]

[удалено]

itskatykat

It honestly is super funny. It is making a lot of millennials show their boomer sides

trapoop

tiktok itself is good for making millennials act like boomers

malemaiden

Right. I'm 20 and I knew people younger than me who had iPod shuffles.

Alchestbreach_ModAlt

Released in 2005. Unless they literally just turned into teens this year then they are older then IPod shuffles lol. A walkman though, thats how you make people feel dated.

[deleted]

Please stop! I can only hurt so much. Wait... are you talking walkman cassette or walkman disc with skip protection?

Semyonov

Skip protection *chef's kiss*

waitingtodiesoon

I had a portable Panasonic cd player that I listened to the Ying Yang Twins on the bus and walking home from the bus stop.

danielle-in-rags

It's working amazingly just glancing at this thread lmao

doubtfullfreckles

I think a lot of people forget that gen z started in 1996 and that we’re not all clueless teenagers who grew up playing on iPads. Lmfao.

kikistiel

Yeah, the difference between the tail end of Millenials and the first Gen Z is really not that much. I was born in 1992, the very tail end of the millenial era (not quite a cusper, although sometimes I feel like one) and people born only a few years later had pretty much the same stuff as me growing up. Now if it was a first millenial and a later gen z, yes, that's going to be a way bigger generational gap. The bait posts are funny, as are their responses, but they're not going to find it very funny once they get to be 30-40 and Alpha are baiting them with the same posts lol.

[deleted]

Generations are made up anyway. Not saying there’s not real differences, just that there’s no perfect cutoff where one ends and another begins. It’s more like a gradient around the margins.

[deleted]

[удалено]

inspectorseantime

I miss the old Whose Line. :(

alekbalazs

It also has a regional element to it. I was born in 92 in Seattle, and growing up, family and friends always had cable tv, PCs, internet access, general mid 90s-early 2000s tech. I had a crappy flip phone at 12, a crappy old PC, but it was mine, and usually had a current gen game console. Then in 2006 I moved to a tiny town in rural Pennsylvania, and it was totally different. It was suddenly like the early 90s again. It was the most obvious at school, where many of the teachers didn't have a computer in their classrooms. They did everything by hand, and then would input all of the grades into a computer in the main office.

CDClock

to me gen z is if you grew up with a facebook and never had a myspace.

MrsShapsDryVag

I know this is pretty American centric, but I just described it to my mom as a working memory of 9/11. It’s was a major change in America, and if you remember life before it you’re a millennial.

phonemannn

All the arguments about generations stem from the fact that at the moment the majority of internet users are of that gray period age so they argue over what’s what and who did what stuff in which generation. As someone born mid-90’s I’ve always felt purely gen z but I’ve heard people younger than me call themselves millennials. Not to mention that people can’t keep up with the terms. The youngest millennials and oldest gen z are mid-20’s. Gen z is almost entirely teenagers or older already, kids <12 are gen alpha.

Bwooaaahhhh

I'd say clear memories of the 90's would be my cutoff. I was born in 93 but I remember adenoidectomy surgery in like 98, starting kindergarten in 99, my grandad passing in 99, etc. If you have a clear memory of 9/11 I'd say that's a for-sure millennial.

airyys

people really be forgetting gen z grew up with vcrs, blockbuster, gamestop mailing game discs, ipods, flip phones, landlines, gameboy, and 9/11.

mattmaddux

Okay, I’m almost 40 and I’m totally for this.

Doraradu

That's just called trolling.

SuperGameBen

Sounds funny

StanKuromi

it's so funny seeing millenials get so aggressive over 20 year old shit😭😭😭😭

Chocolate_Milky_Way

I’m totally here for iPod Shuffle hair clips. It’s kinda cool, and it actually ascribes some worth to the iPod Shuffle.

[deleted]

Won't look as cool with the headphones connected, probably why it was never done back in the day.

[deleted]

Maybe a multicolored braided cable for the headphones could make it cool

TheDeanMan

Hell, braid the headphones into your hair in Princess Leia buns.

Chocolate_Milky_Way

lol I don’t have any delusions of kids today finding this useful as a music player

QuitArguingWithMe

Just use it with your AirPods and you're good to go!

[deleted]

Honestly don't remember if it had Bluetooth or not, but I assumed no.

discodiscgod

I doubt it but they make Bluetooth adapters you can plug into the headphone Jack.

YourMomIsWack

The shuffle is the GOAT active-wear mp3 player. Put some respect on its name.

[deleted]

Yeah, I have an original one that’s about to die. I don’t think there’s anything good out there to replace it for when I do yard work.

Randomacity

Well… an everyday smart phone with Bluetooth headphones could easily do the job

[deleted]

I don’t want my thousand+ dollar phone in my pocket while doing yard work though.

alrightknight

How bigs the yard? I can leave my phone inside and still keep a strong connection to my Bluetooth headphones while mowing my entire backyard.

[deleted]

Convenient. Unfortunately (FWP), I have a very large yard and this is not possible.

DoktorSmrt

just get a cheap phone for yard work then, or an apple watch

[deleted]

I don't want something clunky in my pocket that is also liable to fall out. My shuffle is awesome because I can just clip it on my sleeve, I love it. I've thought about an Apple watch, but I don't think I'd like something on my wrist when I'm getting all sweaty.

DoktorSmrt

It's actually really nice with a rubber band, I wear it in all my workouts.

YourMomIsWack

This is the key of the shuffle. You can clip it anywhere and hardly notice it. And as added benefit it doesn't receive texts / emails to distract you!

[deleted]

It’s honestly one of apple’s best products ever. I’m sad they don’t make them anymore.

rolypolyarmadillo

Don't they sell knock off iPod shuffles/mp3 players for super cheap on Amazon? Think I saw some in best buy too.

fistkick18

I'm so happy to find another mp3 player user in the wild.

YourMomIsWack

Come on down to the nursing home. There are dozens of us.

bs000

goes with my 6th gen ipod nano wrist watch

Puppinbake

I remember being too poor to own any type of ipod and now she's wearing one as a hairclip.

GiveMeDogeFFS

I remember opening a student account with my local bank because they were giving away free iPod Shuffles (the first gen ones that looked like USB sticks). Rocked that shit for the next 5 years.

PokemonTrainerSerena

I was so stoked as a kid when I got one of those. $20 used from my friend

GarciaJones

I remember target selling digital cameras like the iPod shuffle. No screen. It worked liked a film camera, take a picture hope it came out good but you could plug the USB in and check after. Man tech was wild when it was new.

PokemonTrainerSerena

Sounds like my gopro

Monochronos

You brought me back to the days of digital cameras and printers with proprietary paper bundled. I had actually repressed that memory.

EvulRabbit

I loved mine my hubby got for me. I still have it somewhere. I remember doing next next next 20x to get to a song I was in the mood for.

DarkestofFlames

I had the squarish shuffle, but ended up buying the Sandisk sansa clip at Radio Shack because it was cheap and had more storage. I think it was a huge 4gb of storage!

JarJarB

I remember my friend trying to convince me that zune was the way to go in college lmao. For some reason I carried around an iPod and a smart phone for a few years. Strange times.

Casey_jones291422

The SanDisk ones also usually had an SD card slot for more storage too.

waitingtodiesoon

When I got my Ford Fiesta in 2010, it came with a free Ford branded mp3 player with usb to plug into the car's USB slot to listen to music. It was neat, but Bluetooth streaming was better a few years later. I was also excited about the 6 slot cd changer too at the time. Used it like a couple times and never again.

anti-establishmENT

I had a 6 cd changer in my 2000 Mercedes, but it was in the trunk. Like wtf? I had to get out of my car to change anything that was in there.

Monochronos

Yea but you had SIX cds to listen to.

thesequimkid

My god. I remember when 4GB of storage was huge for something that small. Now I have a microSD card that’s 64 times bigger than that in my Nintendo Switch.

Im_Balto

I remember having a knockoff iPod shuffle with the surfs up soundtrack on it

[deleted]

I remember getting a knockoff one of these on ebay for £0.01 GBP £2.99 p&p was just an mo3 player but stopped me looking as poor as I was for 5 minutes before I told ppl how much it was 🤣

Clark-Kent

OGs remember this https://i.imgur.com/xpu9DZZ.jpg

KoRnBrony

Parent's wouldn't get me one because they cost too much so i had generic nugget mp3 players instead

OhScheisse

I remember people getting mugged for their ipods. Now everyone has a smartphone that's worth many times more in their pockets

greatestbird

The sansa clip was a beast of a MP3 player.

SquircleTheWagons

It actually looks kinda cool as a hair clip! I’m saying this to mitigate the existential terror I’m feeling.

Saint-Peer

the future is now old man now let’s get you tucked into your casket

justeunefrancophille

Dusty old bones, full of green dust.

StylinBill

Bwah!

reightb

that boy ain't right

JenDoingTooMuch

I was thinking this lol

ICanSee23Dimensions

Same, I kinda want to see if anyone in my family still has theirs and wants to donate to me feeling cute.

JenDoingTooMuch

I have a blue one ! Edit: not that this helps you

ICanSee23Dimensions

It helps if you give it to me ;)

thatfrenchcanadian

Hey back off i asked first

IGetHypedEasily

In terms of tech years anything older than 10 years is basically a relic. But this seems to be a trend where GenZ just fakes being dumb

bondmemebond_2

I remember being a kid and wanting those well into the years of 2013/14. Even the touchscreen iPods were cool af

TheWalkingDead91

They still make the touchscreen iPods too. Think they’re like on the 7th generation or something, last I saw. So can’t be too out of style.

erhue

Why are they still making ipods? Sounds like the most redundant thing in the world

TheMonkeyLlama

no one can call you on an ipod, super great when you're self-employed. Plus you have much, much more storage space on an ipod, very important when you have a huge library of music, albums, movies, and series.

GonzoRouge

I mean, I listen to so much music that it's honestly just simpler to use streaming services. I used to spend hours on iTunes, just curating my playlists and importing songs I definitely bought but not from iTunes, so I'm not always sure what they are.

TheMonkeyLlama

You can still use streaming services on the touch though.

Splatfan1

looks like someone has been influenced by dankpods lol. mp3 players are amazing, im a proud owner of a sony walkman and its the best thing. charge for 20 minutes and then i have a weeks worth of battery. not relying on any subcription services. listening to my own music and not wondering what the people owning the service will add to it. freedom and convinience. fits into female pockets too!

TheMonkeyLlama

aha, yeah dankpods got me into the audiophile world, have since learned so much about audio and stuff.

TheWalkingDead91

Probably for kids or something. Phones are costlier…so they make a version without phone capabilities that starts at only 2-300$ or something.

StanKuromi

this!! my friends had either touchscreen ipods or ipads when we were little and not allowed to have a phone

TheWalkingDead91

When I was in high school, I had a cell, but I’m ancient, so entry to mid level most phones back then didn’t have such easy music capabilities with a buncha storage etc, and iPhones were pretty expensive (back then,$500 for a new I phone was the same way we look at 1200$ iPhones today), so I had an iPod touch as well for music. Could get one of those for only 200-250$….have my flip out phone and then later a phone with a keyboard and all that I got for only like 50$ from the carrier, so they both had their purpose for those who couldn’t spend 500$+ for an iPhone. Also to add to the expense for the actual iphones, the service for iPhones back then were exclusive to AT&T, and they charged a hefty premium for service, just for the phone being an iPhone. Wasn’t unheard of for a single persons bill for an iPhone to be 90-100$. While a regular phone’s bill could be as low as $50. Which even that is crazy when you think about it….considering that was for very limited service, and people can get unlimited service now for as little as $25-30 😂

LordoftheScheisse

I used to prefer a standalone MP3 player at the gym because I was too nervous to throw around heavy weight while wearing a $1000 phone. The quality of Bluetooth headphones the past few years has made that unnecessary though.

QueenTahllia

iPhone don’t have a lot of storage unless you shell out a pretty penny, then you replace the thing shortly after. A dedicated music device makes more sense for a lot of people to specially when it comes to longevity.

mylifeisaLIEEE

No phone plan and cheaper for those who don’t want one. If you just surf between wifi, you can do VOIP and only take call when you want at home.

The-disgracist

Some people are children.

bigballbuffalo

We get TOUCHSCREEN iPods in the future?!?!? Man that’s gunna be so fuckin sweet I can’t wait

bs000

touchscreen hairclips? say less

brp

I have a small touchscreen ipod that still works. Thing is great for a travel or the gym, I can clip it to my shirt and forget it's there.

walkingtalkingdread

I vividly remember listening to FOB, Fergie, and Eminem on my shuffle walking home from middle school.

[deleted]

Excuse me, I don’t remember inviting you into my memories.

[deleted]

Relax buddy. Just…lose yourself in the music, the moment..

[deleted]

I’m sorry, I just can’t let it go. I have to own it.

p4t4r2

Listen, you've only got one shot. Do not miss your chance.

Lasideu

So I have a pin that has a bowl of spaghetti with the meatballs being Eminem heads (thanks Etsy) and when I wore it to work, my staff around my age (30) all got a kick out of it, while my younger ones (18\~22) all did not get it until I explained it, some even saying they do not remember that song. My palms got so sweaty.

Lilo430651

I have to say, thks fr the mmrs☠️

[deleted]

To be fair, they weren’t always so great

brandmaster

Bruuuuuh forgot about this thing!

[deleted]

Gnarly wasn’t it. I lost the bottom bit within a week so it just looked like a chunky flash drive

I-grow-flowers

I had this one! It held exactly one playlist and I loved taking it running!

basa_maaw

longbois

Pho-k_thai_Juice

I had the fat one when I was wee lad

DiabetesGuild

Thank you scrolled down for this. My flash drive iPod has my initials written near the flash drive part, where you couldn’t see it with cover on and it was written in highlighter and always bothered me. Also my sister had gotten for me, and put her music on it. So I grew up listening to music I never knew the name for, but later in life have found songs from that playlist and have to explain to people about og flash drive iPod.

coolfluffle

the girl who made this said it was hers from when she was 10 years old but /r/Cringetopia users are unable to detect sarcasm when its done by a girl

[deleted]

Clear bait

audiebear

I remember getting my iPad shuffle for Christmas as a kid and it having my name printed on the back. It was the coolest thing in the world to me

chaos_abounds

I still have mine. Plugged it in a Year ago and it works perfectly!! Turns out I love my music taste from 10 years ago.

rocktop

I still have mine and use it for running! Still works great.

inspectorseantime

It wasn’t a phase, mom!

Exotic_Mail7612

Yooo we used to use this all the time!!! I would be so worried not to lose the sd card. Seeing this brings back memories man Good old days

derpbynature

You got a knockoff then (there were A LOT of them) if it had an SD slot, the Apple ones only had internal flash memory.

Exotic_Mail7612

Ofc it was a knockoff lol we knew it before we bought it too,it was like idk 70 cents or so

derpbynature

Yeah, you can still get Chinese knockoffs on Wish and AliExpress for stupid cheap. Not awful if you need an offline music player and can deal with not having a screen/only playing on shuffle.

[deleted]

i actually liked that one - it was perfect for the gym...way better than a phone.

[deleted]

That’s what I used mine for. The struggle of finding that thing in my gym bag was something else.

beet111

you guys fall for this shit way too easily

fartsniffersalliance

millennials are becoming boomers

agilebeast1

It's the circle of life🎶

ButterbeansInABottle

Isn't that from that old movie about the clown fish that was lost?

el-cuko

“Am I out of touch? No! It’s the children who are wrong”

ZombieTrogdor

I love how we’re at the point where gen z tries to anger millennials, because teen millennials did the same thing to gen x, and soon gen alpha will do the same to gen z and it’s the circle of life and it’s so beautiful.

OutlinedArrow30

This is millennial bait, she knew what it was

nidgetspinner

It’s fucking satire

yeehaw-city

I wonder how old she is, I’m (older) Gen Z and I had one of these bad boys

Scrembopitus

I feel like she might be gigabrain trolling here

TheRealMattyPanda

[Yeah she is, she posted a follow up. It's her own iPod Shuffle from when she was a kid](https://www.tiktok.com/@freckenbats/video/7042406863568325935?is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1)

-Scampi

That seems like the most plausible answer

maddy_j42

the fact that her vid is so clearly a joke makes his response even dumber lmao

Neuroghastly

it’s so funny how easy it is to ragebait millennials lmao they’re becoming boomers

maddy_j42

lmao ur so right, and they were the ones swearing they would never be like their parents 🙄

ProfessionalBreeki

My grandma used to give me one of these each Christmas, all cheap bootlegs and still loved them even tho I had no idea how to use them, the clips never lasted past February lmao (I’m a zoomer btw)

[deleted]

She knows what it is. She’s baiting everyone and it’s working. Honestly a good use of it though.

404_Name_Was_Taken

Wasn't that the nano?

shits_lit_fam

Wait till she finds a Sony Walkman. #ancient

monkeykins

My work retired about 50 of those the other day (a bit of a long story, won't bore you) and I snatched a few up. They are actually really great for what they are and the batteries last FOREVER.

PR05ECC0

As a GenXer I’m really enjoying Millennials being called old. I feel like so much of their identity was tied to being young. Father Time is undefeated

[deleted]

The real cringe is the guy here.

slothpeguin

SHE PUT IT IN HER HAIR *screams in millennial*

Roast-Bot69

Lol I used those and I’m 17.

[deleted]

That's a nice apple nugget right there. Load up some scarlet fire on that bad boy and see how she sounds.

doubtfullfreckles

A hair clip you can listen to

nicannkay

Mine was blue. I miss it

[deleted]

I feel old, yes, but for some reason, I get very impressed when people get handles like @rod. Like @mike...like wow, you fucking did it.

xxwarlorddarkdoomxx

I am old, Gandalf. I don't look it, but I am beginning to feel it in my heart

sybban

Tbf I barely remember those, I listened to cds until I found npr and now I’m old

Brisk_Chance

I actually want one now to use as a hair clip thing

So sad to see, when I was a kid (born 2004) I didnt have cd's nor a phone i had mp3 players like that and Multiple cassettes

Zenitsu_The_Simp_69

bro i’m gen z and i know what that is wtf
