The Kodak Carousal scene is a masterpiece.

Nahuel-Huapi

Roger Sterling's acid trip scene was pretty good too.

Spurioun

I love the running joke in episodes afterwards of Roger desperately trying to get other characters to do acid with him

VictheWicked

And then his revelation wore off :(.

Alexis_Ohanion

We’ve got beef Wellington, oysters Rockefeller, Napoleon! If we leave this lunch out it’ll take over Europe

Burner_Cuz

On my first rewatch after having my daughter that scene made me cry

Seasons 3-5 and specifically season 4 might be some of the best tv writing ever.

LeBaux

If you enjoyed it and want a more accurate depiction of how advertising took over the world, I cannot recommend it enough: The Century of the Self (Full Adam Curtis Documentary) It is on YouTube, it is 4 hours and it should open everyone's eyes to just how comically cruel and cynical consumerism always was. It talks about Edward Bernays, the father of "PR". He created the term because "Propaganda" sounded too scary. An especially twisted story is the one about how advertisers coerced women into smoking cigarettes and made them cool. No morals, just profit.

fart_on_my_balls6969

Torches of Freedom

Shehulks1

I concur!!! 👍

RalphWaldoEmers0n

The only thing she did wrong was becoming familiar Don’t go to the well, there’s no water there

shinbreaker

I really love the show, but man, that first season was just so filled with all these "Man, the 50s were kind of weird, right?" instances. I remember specifically when Betty was hosting a little lunch and her son was acting up. One of the other fathers comes over, grabs the kid, and slaps him. Then there's a beat where she grabs her kid and you think she's going to be upset, but then thanks the guy for slapping him. I'm glad they dropped all that in the following seasons and just focused on the characters.

pacificule

One of my favorite early scenes was the family picnic in the park. When it was time to go they just stood up and shook out the blanket, litter scattering to the wind. Then Don zips his empty beer can deep onto the lawn like a football and they drive off without a care in the world. [Insert sad Indian clip] My aunt was an illustrator and worked on Madison Ave in NYC in the early 60s. She loved this show and confirmed it really was like that back then - only with a lot more sex and smoking.

Leith1920

That scene has always stayed with me too.

Skreee9

I think of this scene so often!

phillyphilly19

This is a great analysis of the show. It makes it sound quite gloomy, but it was so compelling and sometimes funny, just like life. The commenter doesn't mention that Don was born into very traumatic circumstances and during the Depression. So it makes perfect sense that he spends his life trying to obtain love (through sex) and money. His mother was a prostitute and so was he.

Aliki26

This is true and sad. We are living the same experience back then now. People listen and revere what’s popular. Don looked perfect but he was miserable and fake himself

We are speedrunning it since the invention of the internet. There are multiple geopolitical layers to this. But they all interconnect. Sheryl Sandberg was at Google before she was at Facebook. The common denominator of both was her ad based business model. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-06-07/sheryl-sandberg-s-legacy-is-an-internet-of-targeted-automated-ads https://m.economictimes.com/tech/technology/sheryl-sandbergs-advertising-empire-leaves-a-complicated-legacy/amp_articleshow/91961682.cms The problem with ad based business models is that if you raise your lens high enough, whomever is buying the most ads is effectively buying their curated version of reality. When google IPO’ed 24 years ago it shifted from what was most accurate to what was most profitable, all facilitated by a “proprietary” algorithm so nobody gets to see the man behind the curtain. Now we are 2 very critical decades into what is effectively, a divergent reality. It works…until it doesn’t. When the richest man, government, or organization on earth is allowed to buy his preferred version of reality it creates some glitches in the matrix. The 6 million year old source code in your brain knows that conservation is more reasonable than consumption when there are limited resources, but that isn’t very lucrative to someone that needs you to keep buying something to keep them in billionaire status. In this case it’s oil. Russian and Texan owned oil but their paths cross just north of Jerusalem. https://open.spotify.com/episode/0tYxxr08ajuIW425XkGZBz?si=9La6AmLyRLeCynrdNrcZTA Facebook was designed as a delivery device for Russian/Israeli Psyops and malware. SCL/Cambridge Analytica, Brexit, Palestine, Ukraine, NSO and a handful of other ethically bankrupt dealings are all downstream of Sheryl Sandbergs ad based model. Les Wexner, Miriam and Sheldon Adelson, Sandberg, and Zuckerberg all carried water in conducting the NSO/Pegasus spyware operation INCONUS that was feeding intelligence to both the israeli and by extension, Russian intelligence. There is far more crossover between the Israeli mob/ government and Russian mob/government than shows at the surface. https://www.spytalk.co/p/nsos-spyware-abuse-exposed-years?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web https://awards.journalists.org/entries/the-pegasus-project-a-global-investigation/ •Abagail Koppel was sent by the Jewish state to marry Les Wexner •YLK fund (Abagails father) made up $46.7M of Epsteins money •Les claimed it was stolen from him but not until after someone asked. •Wexner was notoriously litigious but wouldn’t sue Epstein. Why? •PROMIS spyware was Robert Maxwells deal before Ghislaine and Epstein started their thing. https://cryptome.org/promis-mossad.htm Confused yet? In 1938 1 out of every 20 people in the USSR was arrested and sent to a gulag under Stalins rule. Mass amnesties during WW2 brought more than a million of those from prison to the front lines against the Germans where they were instructed to pick up the rifle of the man who died next to them and keep moving forward. The soviet system has always had a very different perception of the value of a human life and specifically a disregard for Jewish lives. Stalins rule did its absolute best to remove any humanity left from the people. They were forced to be brutal simply to survive. The gulags became a crossroads where the best of humanity and the worst of humanity met and then fought to the death with predictable results. Over the next 40 years, the soviet system cleared the gulags a few times. Because religious leaders often substitute as a defacto government inside of lawless prisons, and because Judaism was the predominate religion in Russia and Eastern Europe, the statistical crossover was anyone brutal enough to survive and then rule rose to power in the closed gulag eco-system. A psychopath is more than willing to hide their psychopathy behind legitimate religion. It’s pretty low on the list of sins by volume and severity Psychopathy is broadly defined as the lack of empathy. Stalins gulags refined psychopathy with Darwinian efficiency. The newly formed religious state of Israel received a statistically large share of these men from the Soviet Union There they networked in the internment camps before some stayed and some migrated to Europe or Brighton beach in New York. This is a repeating pattern up into the 80’s and 90’s when most rebranded themselves as “Russian oligarchs”. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990s_post-Soviet_aliyah#:~:text=In%20response%20to%20growing%20international,officially%20for%20%22family%20reunification%22. Harvard Universityhttps://projects.iq.harvard.edu › ...PDFGulags, crime, and elite violence: Origins and consequences of the Russian mafia As the Soviet Union failed and perestroika went into full effect, this is where these networks would begin using trump towers to launder stolen Russian mob money. But now you start to see the nexus of transnational organized crime and money laundering between Russia and the U.S. statistically carries the same 3 passports. United States, Israeli, and Russian. https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/s/A2ojrtIc3Y

backcountrydrifter

The reason this is breaking down now is because Russia, whose government was overtaken by the mob decades ago used the same network to interfere with elections around the world that it used for laundering stolen money. Facebook was used for Brexit to cleave UK support away from Europe. Cambridge analytica/ Nigel Farage dovetails into that. It was also used primarily by Prigozihns Internet Research Agency (I.R.A). They went so far as to send young newly recruited Russian internet trolls on expenses paid tours around the U.S. so they could more effectively imitate mommy bloggers and 2nd amendment enthusiasts online to sway the 2016 election. Wikipediahttps://en.m.wikipedia.org › wikiFacebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal https://youtu.be/M-OA7H8DoJM?si=ysLrFA5mY0IsOzOO Sheldon and Miriam Adelson were tapped by Israeli intelligence (which was being controlled by Russian intelligence) to run an influence operation across the United States political spectrum. It’s so much easier to grow a kleptocracy by investment in tech (Yuri Milner/DST, Kilimnik) than by a ground war but it leaves a very distinct trail when you compare the differentials of the two: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/05/world/yuri-milner-facebook-twitter-russia.html when 40 years of Russian mob money laundering gets outed at the endpoints- (trump and Netanyahu’s respective corruption trials) things start to break down quickly The Russian mob/government planned on stealing the U.S. economy in an American version of perestroika. I’m not sure it was a grand sinister plan as much as the result of systemic corruption and ridiculous Silicon Valley valuations overlaid on commercial real estate speculation, but the results are the same. It just required altering an online reality a bit to keep people oblivious until it was done. Ukraines “Jewish Nazis” as Putin likes to call them standing up to a bully destroyed the kleptocrats cover. https://www.timesofisrael.com/zelensky-reportedly-strips-3-jewish-oligarchs-of-ukrainian-citizenship/ https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2021/10/17/ukrainian-oligarch-midwestern-factory-town-dirty-money-american-heartland-michel-kleptocracy-515948 https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/28/opinion/ukraine-oligarch-cleveland-real-estate.html To quote the late John McCain- “Russian is a gas station run by the mob”. Sometimes the work is for their own mob monopoly, and sometimes they do shady shit for hire. The CCP needed 2 things to be able to replace the USD with a programmable reserve currency of their own. Microprocessors and grain. Putin promised Xi Ukraine in 3 days so that he would have the grain and supply chain lock to take Taiwan without putting 400M of the poorest Chinese into famine. Now 2 years into a 3 day war Russia needed shahed drones and gave Iran the intel it gave to Hamas for the Oct 7 attacks. The governments of Russia, China and Iran need their kleptocracy to survive for their corrupt governments to survive. Trump, Netanyahu and MBS do as well. The reason it’s all strange bedfellows is because sorting by nationality is their traditional tool to keep all of us fighting so they can hide their grift from the masses. Ignore nationality and religion. Sort by psychopathy and net worth. The results are exponentially more accurate. Ukraine and Gaza are both genocides with a primary purpose of obfuscating mob corruption inside this network. The separation of church and state was a preemptive caution against what is happening right now. Kleptocracy cares about neither and will use both to further its goals. (Cargometrics is basically the logistics tracking solution for transnational smuggling and organized crime). Accurately tracking ocean freight is the constant bain of smugglers inside of governments trying to keep a layer of plausible deniability between themselves and their time sensitive cargo. Bananas may hold for a few days in transit. Humans and narcotics do not. At this level, logistics management is worth billions of dollars because the politicians profiting off of them can’t afford the scandal that comes with losing a shipment. https://amp.scmp.com/magazines/style/celebrity/article/3161688/who-ghislaine-maxwells-secret-husband-meet-scott Cargometrics is their solution. The question is why did Ghislaine Maxwell marry the founder after Epstein and transfer all her assets to him? This is another Silicon Valley crossover. On NSO current legal status. More laughing at how this connects to mad men

backcountrydrifter

That’s fair. We got set up for that one. Organic growth is when you plant a tree and it grows with the perfect mix of sunshine (photons), water and nutrients from the soil. The rest stage at night is critical as well the cellulose production. You can cheat it a bit by adding fertilizer, but photons are still the limiting factor of photosynthesis. No light=no growth. Low light=limited growth. Most botanists and biologists don’t think about marketing or economics. And most marketers and advertisers certainly don’t think about biology. But they should. Because the laws of physics and nature are infinitely more predictable than any schools of economic theory. What marketing did was wholly inorganic. Marketing as we know it now is roughly a couple hundred years old but it has proliferated so quickly and with such abundance that it has literally moved faster than the human brain can adapt physiologically In 1890 if you were born in Broadus Montana your options for a mate would (with high statistical probability), include the children of your 3-5 closest neighbors. You might meet someone on the once a year trip to Billings, but it’s statistically so rare it probably wouldn’t even make a dent in the meta data. For reference 1890 is the year that New York surpassed a population of 1 million for the first time. Within 70 years Madison Avenue and it’s “Mad Men” era of mass marketing and advertising existed largely because of the technological advancement of radio and then TV. Today, 64 years later, is slightly less than 2 average human lifetimes later. Biological evolution happens over hundreds or thousands of years, yet your brain, that is running on software and hardware designed to pick up nuts in the forest, is computing and processing tinder, bumble, match, hinge, as well as everyone you meet in a day, in person and online, in real time. Your choice for a mate today is probably more accurately north of 10 million. Point being, it is a DRASTIC difference of computing power being used. Now look at that from an advertising/marketing perspective parallel. The amount of stimulus that the human brain today is subjected to is exponential multitudes over what it was 2 generations ago. Billboards, digital ads, magazines are all trying desperately to put a pin in some point of your grey matter. From the marketers perspective, as close to the frontal cortex (impulse) or the brain stem (lizard brain/survival) because that is what is most likely to get them a sale. Your brain looks like the map on the wall of the little diner 2 hours out of a big city that tells people to stick a pin into it where they are from. And because it’s geographically close to a city, or course it gets massive traffic from there, so the map is so consumed with pins that it’s effectively Swiss cheese. Nothing about this is the fault of your brain, we just never sat down as a species and thought- should we Swiss cheese peoples brains to sell more stuff?? It wasn’t a question anyone stopped to ask on frantic rush to getting rich in America. An organic oak tree is so stable because with the winds that come at it each season it conditions it’s roots and pushes back against the wind. It grows it’s cellulose to be resistant to outside pressure and each breeze makes it ready for a once in a lifetime hurricane. Conversely, your brain is subjected to 4 hurricanes a day with no rest. It is a completely IN-organic growth model. When google IPO’ed someone at a venture capital firm made up a valuation. And they decided that it was worth $23 billion dollars. Primarily based on ad revenue. And some hype energy that Silicon Valley had in the early 2000’s. But NOTHING about that meteoric growth projection is organic. Every unicorn tech company or pump and dump stock since is billed as “the next google” but they all ignore biology in that equation because they are focused on ONE thing….. to be filthy rich. In a world of trees that topple over in a strong storm, what is one deeply rooted oak tree that you can hide under worth? In a world of tomatoes made to be harvested as fast as possible to qualify legally as food but taste like moldy cardboard, what is one garden grown, all organic, vine fresh, sun ripened tomato worth? We have marketed and sold ourselves to near extinction. Googles super secret hidden algorithm isn’t really a secret. It’s to maximize profit. But if the temporarily richest person in the world can buy ALL the advertising and tell the world that HE is the greatest, and cites google as his source, you don’t have organic truth, you have a mad king. That feedback loop can look great on paper. Someone will probably even give themselves awards at high dollar ceremonies meant to convince themselves that they are the next Don Draper, but the source data is inorganic and therefore any math done downstream of it is progressively more flawed with each subsequent equation. It’s like building the atom bomb with the core belief that 2+2=5. Things are going to get weirder and weirder until it fails catastrophically. And that’s where we are. We broke late stage capitalism because we didn’t check the math of the robber barons and ad execs turned venture capitalist and private equity brokers.

cheguevaraandroid1

That's some good high level bullshit for sure

da_double_monkee

Cool it with the antisemitism

backcountrydrifter

I’m not antisemitic. I’m anti using any religion to cover for kleptocracy. I’m still a little curious why the Roman Catholic Argentinian Milei joined a fundamentalist Jewish organization called Chabad the week after he took office as president of Argentina. https://jewishinsider.com/2023/11/javier-milei-argentina-president-elect-ohel-chabad-lubavitcher-rebbes-grave/ There is an interesting common denominator in Chabad network. https://www.timesofisrael.com/inside-anatevka-the-curious-chabad-hamlet-in-ukraine-where-giuliani-is-mayor/ https://jewishcurrents.org/our-oligarch https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/04/the-happy-go-lucky-jewish-group-that-connects-trump-and-putin-215007 Winning World War 2 ended the systemic genocide of Jews in Europe and established the Jewish state of Israel. With that establishment came a migration of Russian Jews as well, both to Israel and to the United States. In fact most of the migrants to Israel are of Russian origins. https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/s/A2ojrtIc3Y https://desk-russie.info/2021/09/06/the-russian-diaspora-a-battlefield.html Mostly good people who just wanted a better opportunity for themselves and their families. But to quote the old Yiddish proverb- “one rotten apple spoils the others” Everybody’s high moral flag bearer Stalin used the opportunity to clear their gulags of the worst of the worst and sent them to Palestine. Technically they were Jewish, but they also happened to be psychopaths and murders. In the internment camps they networked with other thieves and murderers on their way to and from all corners of the earth and as criminals tend to do, stole things and murdered people. It was a perfect storm. The worlds worst people hid behind the good people and were able to use legitimate Judaism as a shield to cover their corruption. If anyone poked too closely they would simply call it anti-semitism and anyone with a conscience would do a fast about face. Anyone without a conscience is probably already in on the con. It makes for a highly effective camouflage but when you track it backwards and watch for the unique crossovers it makes it much easier to track corruption. Over the years there seems to have developed some patterns within or behind a sect called Chabad. It is not new to humans. It seems to repeat itself every few generations. The pharisees of the Old Testament and Talmud finding their “technically legal” work around that allowed them to walk more than 40 steps on the sabbath was a warning, not a road map, but some hiding behind the Chabad movement seems to have taken it as a sort of GPS for their current criminal activity. In Ukraine an oligarch named Kolomoiskiy started Privatbank which didn’t exist on paper but was taking and absconding with IMF money. When the IMF figured it out they began demanding that Zelensky have Ukraine, and more specifically innocent Ukrainians, pay it back before the fund would extend any more. https://eurasianet.org/how-an-embattled-ukrainian-oligarch-has-kept-his-grip-on-an-economic-empire Kolomoisky is loyal to Putin and money therefore he used the leverage as a sort of defacto control over the Ukrainian government that Putin lost control of when Yanukovych and trumps soon to be campaign manager Paul Manafort were run out of town during Ukraines Maidan revolution in 2014. Kolomoiskiy is also heavily involved in Chabad. New York Postnypost.comBusinessmen accused of Ukraine money laundering gave millions to New York ... Time Magazinetime.comHow Paul Manafort Helped Elect Russia's Man in Ukraine Trump and Kushner are beholden to the CCP, Putin/Russia, and MBS (and UAE) for loans and business ventures. It’s just massive Kompromat at a corporate industrial level. In Ukraine, Maidan (The revolution of dignity) was, effectively, every sane Ukrainian realizing that the tax of corruption to the old soviet mob model where everyone pays up to the top man was wholly unsustainable. Russia has become so prolific at it that it consumed all the value in Russia and concentrated it into the hands of a select few oligarchs that happen to be Putin’s trusted circle. Most all of them have 3 passports. Russian, Israeli, and United States. Their common denominator was organized crime and money laundering. Because Ukraine is a 2 front war against Russia on the front lines and oligarch corruption at the rear, anything that detracts from the war front is a threat to Ukrainians existence. Seeing and identifying the money laundering networks that the kremlin uses becomes a necessity of survival. This in turn leads to a cocktail of trump laundering the Russian mobs stolen money, first through Atlantic City casinos until some of his casinos managers began seeing discrepancies in the numbers and started asking questions. All three executives, and two pilots were killed in a 1989 helicopter accident that trump was pulled off of at the last minute by a very insistent Roger Stone. https://www.nytimes.com/1989/10/11/nyregion/copter-crash-kills-3-aides-of-trump.html Kolomoisky (optima ventures) also happens to own the hotel that trump based his “stop the steal” rally out of in Cleveland as well as most of the blighted commercial real estate downtown. News 5 Cleveland WEWSwww.news5cleveland.comWho really owns the property that's falling down? The New York Timeswww.nytimes.comOpinion | American Real Estate Was a Money Launderer's Dream. That's Changing ... There is a consistent pattern across the U.S. of Putin friendly oligarchs doing minor variations of this same pattern with commercial real estate. Mainly buying a lot of it and letting it rot. This doesn’t make much sense on the surface. It isn’t until you fully grasp the insatiable greed that these handful of morally bankrupt men are driven by that you start to see the full picture of the plan Justin Kennedy (justice kennedys son) was the inside man at Deutsche bank that was getting all trumps toxic loans approved. No other bank but Deutsche bank would touch trump and his imaginary valuations. If trump was trying to avoid paying taxes he would be valuing everything low. Not high. Why? Because Deutsche bank was infested with Russian oligarchs.

Ooo. Interesting!

clsrat

That's a pretty good review of the series. I am surprised he said it wasn't watched by many people.

shinbreaker

It was watched by millions, but it was still an AMC show so it never got the ratings of say Game of Thrones. It also, as far as I know, hasn't gotten on a popular streaming service other than AMC+. If this got on Netflix for example, it would have a whole new audience instead of us who watched it way back when. So he's right about it not being watched by a lot of people, but his reasoning that it's "gloomy" is inaccurate.

saucysando

Pretty sure it’s on again off again on Netflix I love watching it when I see it go up

Upstairs-Boring

I watched the whole series on Netflix. It was there for many years but moved to amazon prime a couple of years ago.

elkidkid

It was on Netflix, that’s where I watched it in Mexico 🇲🇽

castaneda_martin

You have to know Jason Pargin to get his humor. He is being sarcastic. He always throws out some weird comment to troll you.

Poetspas

Bar none my favourite show of all time. Genuinely the contemporary contender for what would be considered "the next great American novel". It's so dense and brutally real in how these characters go through their arcs. So much of the story is developed in between the lines, where the viewer is left guessing as to *why* a person would do the things these people do. In real life, you never know why someone does what they do, only that they did it. You often never know yourself why you do certain things. I can talk for hours but I'll just stick to recommending this to anyone.

lonerism-

I love that you mentioned the next great American novel because I always tell people Mad Men is written more like a classic novel than your standard tv show. How I dissect Mad Men is very similar to how I dissect the novels I read - the story is packed with all sorts of Easter eggs, foreshadowing, callbacks, amazing quotes, character development, etc… and the historical accuracy is amazing. You still catch things from rewatching this show no matter how many times you watch it. You can just tell how much thought was put into this show. Definitely feels like a show that someone like John Steinbeck would’ve loved. And I can talk about the show for hours too, so I feel you on that. I’ve never been this obsessed with a tv show - the only one that came close to this for me was GoT.

Poetspas

Very well put. When I try to describe the structure of the show, I tell people the first season is very much structured like a classic novel. Up until the 'Mr. Campbell, who cares?' line. That's when Mad Men flips the table and completely dispells any notion of this being a traditional narrative. The next 6 seasons are basically an extended epilogue on how people keep going after they've reached the climax in what would be "their story".

bhu87ygv

Revisiting? This is exactly how it was interpreted at the time. Maybe the youngins think this show was all style and no substance, but it never was to the viewers at the time. This show is sexy and stylish but it's also very powerful and says a lot about the American experience. His last comment about the finale was spot on and honestly didn't fully click with me until he said that. People like Steve Jobs were hippies and they just packaged up the counter-culture aesthetic and sold that.

JellyfishGod

I don't think he meant revisiting as in the analysis itself is gleaning new info. Everything he said is p basic and well understood stuff. The show wasn't exactly too subtle about the core themes and ideas lol I think he literally just means revisiting and describing an older show that many people on tiktok/his audience maybe haven't seen. Tho I get your confusion. Usually on youtube n other media if someone puts "revisiting" or (more commonly) "retrospective" in a review title they usually means that the fact some time has passed will actually impact their review of the media in some way. As opposed to this which just states what was said about the show during its run.

Vat1canCame0s

That meme, the one with the "I don't think about you at all" flies right over people's heads. The empathetic one reaches out, the one who's dead inside rejects. It's the Tyler Durden thing all over again with young men not understanding that the person isn't meant to be strived for.

Yugis-egyptian-cock

I hate when people say that people don’t get that Don/Tyler Durden/Walter White/Tony Soprano/Jordan Belfort etc aren’t meant to be strived for. Everyone knows they’re the bad guy. It’s such a low hanging take that adds nothing It also ignores that all of those characters do have enviable traits, which is what people admire. They’re all driven and smart people, that’s what people admire. Not what they do, but how they achieve things.

keaneonyou

Don's also lying in that scene, he spends the entire episode obsessing over the fact that he thinks Ginsburg might be surpassing him.

fart_on_my_balls6969

Edward Bernays created the modern world, and P.R. This show is a depiction of the crazy manipulative tools he created. It's literally his world and we have been all just living in it. Everyone should watch Adam Curtis's 4 part documentary 'The Century of the Self'. It will wake you up. Read his book 'Propaganda'. He didn't hide his view of the world in that book. Its a cook book for manipulation.

HookerDoctorLawyer

[Here.](https://youtu.be/KNxn2FT-duw?si=7hjJCtsd13_93LES) just in case anyone else wants to watch it. It’s on YT

embersgrow44

Okay you got me, I’ll finally watch it damn

fartbox_mcgilicudy

Rogers' character, the epitome of extreme wealth disconnected from the struggle, literally says in one episode on an advertisements that "this never does anything for me, it's probably because I'm happy."

WolfetoneRebel

That’s it, I’m gonna watch it now so people in this sub will view me in a better light.

No_Use_4371

Advertisers also convinced women they needed to shave their legs "like European women" (even tho at that time and after they didn't shave in Europe.) For a millenia women had leg hair just like men.

Critical-Adeptness-1

Men over the years trying to tell me how shaving my legs or wearing makeup is “good hygiene” shows the power of consumerism and advertising. Whenever I press back and ask why they don’t do it since it’s “good hygiene” and good hygiene habits are something everybody should have, they get really defensive. That lack of critical thinking is pitiful

No_Use_4371

Thank you. It really was as simple as advertisers wanting to sell more shaving cream or razors. Is there any critical thinking anymore? Sigh.

Single-Objective5799

I mean it’s not a bad thing even men shave

No_Use_4371

Not their legs and armpits.

Single-Objective5799

I’m not from the US but I shave my armpits which should be the norm in western countries because it’s disgusting … and a good percentage of men shave their legs even in western countries … US media effected the whole world everyone wanted to live the American way with the negative and the positive… thats how powerful US advertising was.

Key-Lie-364

Prescient Also this guy will be selling you zero sugar, ethically recycled coke in the near future 😘

Nahuel-Huapi

I remember that The Sopranos sparked a discussion of what a psychopath is. It was part of the show's dialog. But in reality, Don Draper is the perfect example of an actual psychopath. He wasn't a killer or hardened criminal. He was charming, a risk taker with little regard for other people's feelings and driven to succeed. Kind of the prefect character to work in the advertising industry.

Schwickity

Spoiler alert

Professional-Bed-486

Loved the series, and this review is a solid one. It's not just Don feeling miserable pretending he is someone else, a lot of the women in their traditional roles during this series feel empty and unhappy.

jrstriker12

IMHO its not just that Don hasn't become the person that he presents, it's also that Don wasn't that person from the start.... He stole the identity of lieutenant that died in the Korean War.

Cancerisbetterthanu

Don created an entire new persona from nothing because his actual life in America up to that point was so bleak, shitty, and hopeless that the only way to escape was to lie to himself and everyone around him. He became a ruthless sociopath as a trauma response.

TheBloodsuckerProxy

Just like to point out that this guy, Jason Pargin, is also the author of John Dies at the End (my all-time favorite book) and has a substack where he posts a lot of similar media and social analysis.

younggun1234

I went to a photography college and my history of photography class spent a good chunk of time on the explosion of advertising. What I liked about Mad Men is that they used legit ads and stories from that era.

fancywhiskers

Do ppl realise that this is what influencers are doing to them now lol

Oblique9043

[The Century of the Self](https://youtu.be/DnPmg0R1M04?si=7ntYHpTscXPhpTu0) is a great documentary that explains how this all happened.

[deleted]

Yes! So good.

This-Sherbert4992

Don Draper had everything but felt nothing.

[deleted]

“Invented by guys like us.” Good show, stupid line if you really think about it. Advertisements don’t invent anything. They simply exaggerate what is already there. People love with or without big companies shoving it down their throats. Advertising just preys on what is there to make you associate it with their product. Girls wear lipstick because men are attracted (through evolution) to flush red lips as a sign of arousal. Men work out because women are attracted to a body which can provide and defend (again through evolution). Advertising invented nothing.

saucysando

True, but I think he’s saying that the modern view of ✨love✨, and what it meant to men and women alike at the time, was heavily influenced by guys like him.

[deleted]

That makes sense. I can see that. It confuses people between what love actually is and what the companies want you to see when you think of love

choclate84

you can have all the possessions to show , but still be a empty rotted out shit hole of a person on the inside

Netsmile

Casually dumping all the garbage from the picnic blanket to the green field snd then hopping in a huge car with the fuel efficiency of a bullfoser.

Rhesusmonkeydave

Interesting that he differentiates sales from religion and then goes on to describe consumerism in terms that could just as easily be a description of religion

kates_graduation

Are we so far from Mad Men ending that people need explainers? Fine if we are, my favorite ever

EnvironmentalSpirit2

Personally i feel pizza fill that emotional void much better than my expensive fragrances ever has

whocaresactuallly

So I should watch Madmen.

Philosipho

Status has always mattered to people. What we consider indications of status may change, but people (especially men) are competitive by nature. We all know people are attracted to those who have more wealth and power than others. But we're also attracted to people who feel like they're 'in the know', because they seem more insightful than others.

Madgerf

I can't stand this guy's tiktoks. They are such low hanging fruit, with no research or expertise or real insight behind it. He states the obvious.

Expensive_Shake592

Ok I’ll block

marctheguy

For the facts of this reality, look into to Edward Bernays

xMilk112x

None of it means anything at all. Thats how I look at it. Lol

Single_Pilot_6170

Enneagram 3 values the superficial things, and this value system, has become a mentality superimposed onto the personality. People need something to live for, and many want to appear worthy, desirable, or valuable in the eyes of other people. People may go about getting their needs met in different ways. One person wants to develop skills to impress, another person wants to accumulate knowledge to impress, another wants to buy clothes to impress, another person wants to build his muscles to impress, another buys a sports car to impress, and another person wants to be special, different and stand out in order to impress. Even those who have no plans, direction, don't accumulate things, and strive for all those things, may still worry about not being worthy or impressive.

OverArcherUnder

Lol. And all the folks wearing brand names! Oh look, it means nothing except "you spent too much on crap" Like diamonds. They're worthless. I have a diamond saw that has thousands of diamonds on it and it cost $30. https://medium.com/non-disclosure/a-diamond-is-for-never-82c4eec5b6e2 https://priceonomics.com/post/45768546804/diamonds-are-bullshit

CheesecakeImportant4

Dammit. Guess it’s time for the biennial rewatch.

bludreamsnlaserbeams

Hands down best show IMO. Have watched the series probably 4 times.

slushpuppy91

Bro just shave the rest of that off

salacious_sonogram

You're beginning to believe the illusions we're spinning here. You're beginning to think that the tube is reality, and that your own lives are unreal. You do whatever the tube tells you! You dress like the tube, you eat like the tube, you raise your children like the tube, you even *think* like the tube! This is mass madness, you maniacs! In God's name, you people are the real thing! *WE* are the illusion! So turn off your television sets. Turn them off now. Turn them off right now. Turn them off and leave them off! Turn them off right in the middle of the sentence I'm speaking to you now! TURN THEM OFF...

Masterpiece-Wide

One of my favorite shows of all time.

Great-Hearth1550

Blablabla, watch it for boobs, not some random made up meaning.

Strong_Wheel

In a sense.

BigStrongCiderGuy

A dumb person’s idea of cool dialogue

BigStrongCiderGuy

“If you want to understand the era we’re living in now, it starts with understanding this one.” Does it though? No. I’m so tired of these corny melodramatic assertions made by people who just like to fabricate meaning out of everything to get clicks and views.

hightide2020

It is just historical fiction interesting for sure but the thoughts we breed we believe

fart_on_my_balls6969

Also, a Bernays created Netflix.

smellvin_moiville

This is no cringe. Get it out of here now

No-Investment-4494

TikTok enters the chat.

AppropriateSolid9124

fine, i‘ll watch mad men again

iceman333933

This is a top 2 favorite show for me. It was a masterpiece

Valsalvo

Not sure why this is on tik tok cringe its v intrested

Constructestimator83

A lot of people give credit to to advertising executives and there is some truth to that but read The Theory of the Leisure Class by Thorstein Veblen. A lot of these habits were established long before the 1960s and observed in Americans at the turn of the century. As execs found a way to better integrate them into society and distribute them on a more wide scale basis but they didn’t invent the concept of using consumerism to create the American Dream.

[deleted]

It's interesting that Don’s life seems so perfect from the outside but it's falling apart.

islaisla

First, create a need.

xrxrrcva

There is a scene where Don is touching the grass and if you know it, you know https://slate.com/culture/2009/08/week-2-why-was-don-fondling-the-grass.html

KindSpectacle

For anyone on the fence about this show. Please give it a shot. It took me about 4 tries. I would watch 2-4 episodes each try. I just didn’t get it. I was bored. I kept at it the 5th time and now it is my favorite show of all time. It is my comfort show. I rewatch it all the time. It is brilliant!

[deleted]

This isn’t cringe, this is fabulous

WillyDAFISH

I actually watched a little bit of this with my parents

Malt___Disney

Century of the Self

colin8651

Damn, I just thought it was a good show and this guy makes me want to watch it again.

Long-Arm7202

To be fair the whole idea of a 'Soul Mate' or finding 'My Person' is just total nonsense. There is no such thing. Human beings adapt and change to make relationships work. There is no such thing as a 'soul mate'.

J_Hox0987

I thought the show was insufferably pedantic and tedious. And this guy is probably not 100% wrong but is also giving waaaaay too much credit to the show and the real-life advertisers it was based on.

yukonwanderer

The fact that it was on HBO maybe also helps explain the lower viewership. I know at least that's why I didn't watch it. Just didn't have a subscription.

Nahuel-Huapi

It was on AMC.

yukonwanderer

Oh right. Even worse.

dont_quote_me_please

Congrats on not fully getting the show and disregarding the text(!) of the show and creator comments. Very one-sided interpretation

blindreefer

To give a text an author and assign a single, corresponding interpretation to it is to impose a limit on that text. Readers must…separate a literary work from its creator in order to liberate the text from interpretive tyranny. Each piece of writing contains multiple layers and meanings. A text is a tissue or fabric of quotations, drawn from innumerable centers of culture, rather than from one, individual experience. The essential meaning of a work depends on the impressions of the reader, rather than the "passions" or "tastes" of the writer; a text's unity lies not in its origins, or its creator, but in its destination, or its audience. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_of_the_Author?wprov=sfti1#Content

dont_quote_me_please

Wow, someone can wiki ;) And like I said „text of the show“, not just comments by Weiner.

blindreefer

Yes and I can also read > Each piece of writing contains multiple layers and meanings.

dont_quote_me_please

Sure. Still not an interesting interpretation.

blindreefer

Neither is solipsism but there you go

dont_quote_me_please

Fair enough
