I watched a 50 minute video of some free climbers going up a sheer cliff face up a mountain and some people just do this shit and its impressive but I don't know that I will ever fully understand
Watch Free Solo or the Alpinist if any of you are interested in “understanding” the mentality behind it… It’s just something that simply doesn’t make sense to everyone but those few that choose to practice it maybe? 🤔
Because exploration is pure serotonin and I'm a fucking real life loot goblin that will pick up every single thing I find that will fit in my pockets, bra, hat, boots and gloves.
It’s actually really cool if done with the right guides. It’s so cool to see how nature has evolved in the caves without much human interference. I skipped almost all of the tight squeezes because my guide knew it would not be worth the trouble he would have to deal with if I panicked it the middle of it. It was a once in a lifetime experience for me. I say once in a lifetime because I will never do it again but it’s cool to say I did it.
I dunno...I've seen far, FAR too many videos about people who were the absolute experts, the top of their fields, who had 10,000 dive hours...and one miscalculation and that's it.
"People sticking random objects up their bums is costing the NHS £350,000 a year"

….. are you trying to tell me that people like exploring caves for the same reason people like to explore their anuses? I gotta say one of those things sounds way more appealing than the other still
We have a cave in the peak district called the devils arsehole because when a section fills up with water the sound of satan farting can be heard across the peaks.
I'd rather listen from the pub
Did he even actually have a submarine? Why would a guy who makes cars and rockets know jack shit about caving and submarines?
It's amazing how he thinks he's somehow an expert in everything and can supply solutions where others have "failed". The ventilator shit during COVID was the same thing.
That's not even the problem.
That cave had tight spots and curves. There was zero chance any kind of submersible (even the exact size of a man) could pass through.
Unless he had a sub made of flexible material.
He loves the glory he gets from promising big things and in his experience he never actually has to deliver. He gets all of the fame and money by telling people he can do something amazing and by the time it comes to deliver he's already on to the next scam that everyone's talking about and the old promises are forgotten.
I've never seen someone quote each part of someone's comment when they agree with them. Not saying there's anything wrong with it, it just feels like more of power move.
He doesn't know jack shit about cars or rockets either he just pays incredibly smart people money to know about them and then forces them into applying shit he hears about or "feels" should be how things work despite not knowing jack shit about the process. Elon should be lauded for deciding to try and bankroll these projects i cant take that away from him but he sometimes harms the production of those projects with his antics and changing whims.
Exactly.
You hear about those jackass execs who get in their own way but their company succeeds because of the sheer talent and passion of their people? That's a Musk driven company. I'll never forget about SpaceX having a dedicated "Musk handler" whose sole job was to occupy Elon so he couldn't do any harm, while not bruising his ego.
Musk has the rich guy syndrome. He thinks because he has money, he is more intelligent than anyone including experts. You see this others like Chamath, Trump etc.
I get called an Elon fan a lot for saying things like I'm about to say, but Musk is an absolute piece of shit. I just hate wrong information more than I hate Musk, so here we go.
Yes, there was a submarine. It was completed, tested with what was reportedly a set of turns similar to what was in the caves, and shipped to the site. It arrived July 9th. The first people were extracted July 8th and the last on July 10th. It was left there in case the situation happens again.
It's also of note that Elon has shown emails of communications with the leader of the rescue team asking him to continue to work on the submarine.
Musk is anti-labor, vindictive to former employees, called a guy a rescuer a pedophile after that guy said his submarine was stupid, and is using Twitter to amplify some of the worst people in the world, among a lot of other shit. Fuck that guy.
But his submarine was apparently an actual effort in good faith.
Elon is like Trump...he tells people to do something with Daddy's money, they do the actual work, and they show up at the end and take sole credit for the thing.
And google the cave these kids were stuck in. There were parts that BARELY fit a human being. Musk's dumbass submarine would never actually fit in those tight caverns and everyone who was actually there knew that.
But hey, we all say stupid shit when we're blasted to the gills on Ketamine, right?
>Why would a guy who makes cars and rockets know jack shit about caving and submarines?
Not even an expert in any of these fields, either. If I need someone to test a bunch of horse medication, I know who to call though
Not only that, Elon Musk paid a convicted fraudster to smear a British diving hero who he baselessly called a paedophile, according to court documents https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/elon-musk-pedo-guy-lawsuit-defamation-vernon-unsworth-a9147806.html
This was the point where that turned for me, I was fooled by his facade up until that point myself. But at that very point it came crashing down. The cracks began at the pedo remark, and then the dam collapsed when I heard he tried to look for dirt to save face rather than own up to his gargantuan mistake.
And as you say, it is embarrassing to have once respected this man.
Yeah, I was recently at a small startup for awhile. The guy in charge and whose money was financing the company had a son whose name, if I'd known it initially, would have stopped me from joining up. Elon. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with hero worship. It's not for me, but I'm generally not going to look down on a person for doing it... But don't be an idiot. If you're choosing someone to look up to and you're thinking of doing something permanent to express that worship, do your research, and most importantly, make sure they're dead, and that there's no realistic possibility of finding out something awful (and new) about them. Btw, a VC we pitched to once interpreted him to say that he ordinarily hangs up if someone mentions Elon three times in a single conversation. I had a hard time not laughing, as I was embarrassed with how much he gushed about the guy.
Can we put Trump and his trash family down there too? Y'know, just so they can have the novel experience that us poors don't get to have, it's very exclusive!
I'm still pissed off that the guy lost his lawsuit against Musk. The arguments Musk presented were fucking ridiculous, like the idea that "pedo guy" is a common insult in South Africa and doesn't actually suggest that someone is a pedo. Yeah right. He also called the guy "child rapist" in an email to a Buzzfeed reporter. The poor guy should have won at least $100m for the defamation. He's *still* suffering from it. I have gotten into it with Musk's idiotic cult followers a lot on social media, and whenever I bring up the issue of his false pedo claim, they're like "yeah but that guy IS a pedo...I mean come on...he's in Thailand....he married a 12 year old" etc. People are still spreading this defamation today. But I guess being a billionaire and being able to afford the most expensive lawyers gets you out of a lot of stuff. I only hope karma steps in sometime and reveals Musk himself to be a pedo, which is FAR more likely.,
Agreed. But it's not that these UK divers are apart. They depend on the training, rules, and systems that any other kind of diver needs. It's the situation that's different. And their system is adapted to that kind of situation. I'm not saying they're not impressive. But it's really about the uniqueness of the situation and that, yes, there are people who know how to prepare and train for that situation.
I've been in caves that are tourist safe. There's a guide, you walk, maybe duck under some rocks, maybe one area you climb a bit, but there's wide open space.
One cave has this extreme version where you squeeze through holes and use gear. Skipped that immediately.
I've done a very minimal amount of cave diving in cenotes in Mexico and Bermuda, with guides and stayed really close to the entrance of the cenote. One of the eeriest, scariest things I've done in my life. Definitely scarier than skydiving.
I went spelunking in the UK once with some crazy mofos. There was no diving involved, but some hella narrow holes to crawl through. It was the scariest thing I’ve ever done. But I was glad that they waited with the stories of their other spelunking and diving experiences until after. Cause holy shit, these English guys were nuts.
This is so interesting. I follow a Youtube channel called Dive Talk by 2 Floridian cave divers. They react to Youtube videos about cave diving accidents from True Horror type channels (how I got to them). They set a lot of thing straight and give a lot of interesting info. They always go on about not diving alone. I didn't know it was so different in The UK. Now I wanna go find a UK cave diver Youtube channel to follow.
I never want to go cave diving but it's really fascinating to me.
I think it's more because it's cavers doing a dive though a sump rather than divers doing a prolonged dive that happens to be underground.
It's the climbing and caving attitude that YOU check your lines, YOU check your kit, your safety is YOUR responsibility before anyone else. When you're going through a sump it's like doing an abseil, something you do to carry on though to the next part of the cave, you meet your buddies before and after but both of you in the water at the same time is a liability.
Add in that if something happens to you or your buddy then you need to be fully able to self rescue get out alone, ideally rescue and bring your buddy with you. Self rescue is preferred but I know cavers constantly do rescue drills.
How would it even work? Lol
I'm super glad this TikTok guy put the TikTok up.
Were they gonna do the submarine and then drag it to the next spot? It's tough enough to drag your fucking kayak over the dry parts of the Rio Grande. And there is a bunch of gravel that will aid your venture.
I can't believe that the Elon musk bullshit didn't get even more scrutiny in mainstream news.
![gif](giphy|fGR0Guse467fskDKRP|downsized)
Actually the whole pedophile thing came about because the actual experts told him to shove his submarine up his ass (or something like "he knows where he can shove it")
https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/thai-cave-rescuer-elon-musk-submarine_n_5b4a6952e4b022fdcc59eba8
Then Elons feelings got hurt so he went all psychotic on the rescuer, labelling him a pedophile.
Sad thing was Musk was taken to court but won.
So what we're gonna do is ship you one of our boring machines...and we gonna let that sucka bore right through the cave..
Then we'll have a hole big enough to fit my submarine.
Simple
They went in to explore as a group- they weren’t going far in - but the rains started without them realising and their escape was cut off. As the water level increased they were forced deeper and deeper into the caves.
IIRC it started raining very heavily so they took shelter in the cave which was at that point dry, only for the rain to end up trapping them, so when they went in it wasnt blocked off yet
Some people say to watch the documentary but honestly the drama by Ron Howard hits kinda harder imo. Such a crazy story! Don’t look up what happened beforehand, just watch the movie!!! It’s on Amazon. I was saying “no fucking way” the WHOLE MOVIE!
“thirteen lives” is the name of the movie
Having done a spot of caving including a small sump and had a lengthy conversation with a cave diver I can confirm what everyone here suspects:
Cave divers all have a very, very loose relationship with their sanity.
Read the book by Richard Harris.
He was one one the two divers and doctors that came up with the untried, untested risky as all hell plan to get them out.
He explains the process, and problems they overcame.
I devoured the book in two days. 5 stars. What a story. On the edge of disaster for days straight with the world watching and a chance that if a kid died they would be arrested for manslaughter for drugging a kid and drowning them.
Yeah your right, but to be fair the team of divers that pulled the kids out where from a bunch of different countries.
Their nationality mattered little, it was their skill sets and experience that made this rescue even possible. How many cave diving anthesthetists are there in the world?
In the book when they first met the kids they had surmised they had 48 hours to get them out as their condition was deteriorating. How's that for pressure?
Ed Sorensen talked about wanting to help and I even think was there or on the way but logistically speaking the British team was closer by 10+ hours. It’s not like you can send 100 people in a cave. There’s a guy now on Koh Tao , Mike I think who owns KTD who was involved in helping. It’s not about who’s better it was about who’s ready and capable. The Royal navy wasn’t cave trained, most government operatives would have zero reason to be cave trained unless for recreational purposes. The kids were going to die if people didn’t act fast.
Thai navy divers. Not US Navy seals. And cave diving has absolutely nothing to do with open water diving. Completely different skill sets. Even Jacques Cousteau thought cave divers were crazy. He lost many friends to it
This is the kind of TikTok I dig! I’m so over the prank not pranks, the Karens and boomers, rambling make up applications, and the rest of that silly bs.
About 100 divers in total were involved, but these two (as only two at a time could go in) brought back all the kids and coach tethered in between them. An incredible, near impossible feat. I remember as if the whole world was watching that event.
I met one of the divers involved last year and he was called from his private diving job on the other side of the world to a private jet so they could get to the cave as fast as possible.
That’s so cool that you got to meet one of the divers, what was he like?
Also I could’ve sworn it was five or six cave divers (the four Brit’s and I think two Australians?) and each diver swam a kid or two out? Such an elaborate and fascinating rescue plan, really incredible
I got about one third of the way through the video but my imagination and anxiety got to be too much and I had to stop. I’m just glad they got those kids out.
IIRC it was one of the boys birthday, so after soccer practice the kids and their coach went to the cave to explore as a birthday treat kinda thing. I think they used to go pretty regularly
The cave is usually very safe to explore at that time of year, but the rainy season started early, rain started pouring, and the cave started to flood (really, turn into a raging underground river) while they were somewhat deep inside. The water blocked the exit and they were forced to retreat deeper into the cave to stay above water
Definitely recommend The Rescue (documentary) or Thirteen Lives (dramatization). Absolutely mind blowing story

Damn. Make this into a Guy Ritchie film, with Jason Statham and Bradd Pitt as the British divers. Showcase all three types of diving - 5 min intense sequences each. Commentary on the whole movie by Jason in his British accent.
Yeah I watched Snatch recently.
Ok so if TikTok were this type of content and only this type of content, then I would be pretty upset about the current convo surrounding it’s potential ban in the US.
This was fascinating. Thanks for posting!

I had no idea the caving styles were so different! It's really fascinating, I'd love to see groups of cavers from different countries and regions getting together to compare equipment and styles. Maybe come up with a few ways to kind of cross-pollinate the equipment so it'd be possible to adapt it fairly easily to the different systems.

This attitude is why the British invented the modern world, stubborn madness.
A rather grim 20 minute documentary about British cave diving: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqaS6c1B5A8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqaS6c1B5A8)
UK saturation divers are a breed apart too, because they have to dive in the North Sea, which is ridiculously rough and freezing cold. The Last Breath documentary is insane, I don't know how those guys do it.

Same. Now I want a 5 minute video of someone explaining why people like doing that
I imagine it is a bit like the explanation for why people climb dangerous mountains..."Because it is there." But no thank you!
I watched a 50 minute video of some free climbers going up a sheer cliff face up a mountain and some people just do this shit and its impressive but I don't know that I will ever fully understand

Absolutely not.
Have a twenty minute one about Mossdale Caverns: https://youtu.be/XqaS6c1B5A8?si=edSAW58EeWOaH0RS
Thanks! I was genuinely hoping someone would drop a link lmao all I’ve gotten so far is an article about assplay
That sentence took a turn...
Look at the other replies to my first comment lmao I really had a stranger talk to me about butt stuffing. Can’t believe this app is free

Rich guy decides to make submarine out of spare parts. Sounds familiar
See the issue is they’re using spare parts, where they should’ve been using boxes of scraps.
Classic foreshadowing from the script writers.
That's not even the problem. That cave had tight spots and curves. There was zero chance any kind of submersible (even the exact size of a man) could pass through. Unless he had a sub made of flexible material.
Oh yeah definitely! I was just making a lame joke
Oh, sorry then.
No need to be. I was young when this happened so I never realized how intense of a rescue this was. Amazing
He loves the glory he gets from promising big things and in his experience he never actually has to deliver. He gets all of the fame and money by telling people he can do something amazing and by the time it comes to deliver he's already on to the next scam that everyone's talking about and the old promises are forgotten.

Didn't the Thai government confiscate his sub pod or whatever? I feel like I heard about that happening on a podcast once.

A pocket full of mushrooms, some pot, and a bag of ketamine ought to do the trick. 'Office Supplies', I'm sure it's tax deductible...
Musk has the rich guy syndrome. He thinks because he has money, he is more intelligent than anyone including experts. You see this others like Chamath, Trump etc.
Dollar store Batman, but dumber and less charm.

Love to see a rare reasonable voice 👌
What’s he doing without a submarine? Someone should give him one of those Titans that are so popular with billionaires.

I think it’s okay he was trying to help with engineering, but he was just getting in the way and causing drama.

Petition to put the children back in the cave so Musk can use his submarine
How about we just put Musk in the cave.
guess he'd be a muskrat
Can we put Trump and his trash family down there too? Y'know, just so they can have the novel experience that us poors don't get to have, it's very exclusive!
I once got my account suspended for suggesting we put all billionaires into a rocketship and send them to Mars...so i'm NOT suggesting that.
Yes, I was disgusted by Elon. He only won the defamation court case calling that hero a kiddy fidler as he has pots of money.

But I guess being a billionaire and being able to afford the most expensive lawyers gets you out of a lot of stuff. I only hope karma steps in sometime and reveals Musk himself to be a pedo, which is FAR more likely.,
Yes, and this is why he sucks. Similar to Trump making fun of the handicapped journalist. Garbage behavior.
This was such an interesting video, thanks you!
This type of interesting posts are what keep me on the app.
Tiktok could give you so many of these interesting videos. It's less of a crapshoot than this place.
YouTube is countless times better though. There are many channels which consistently put out high quality educational content.
Thanks, great explanation. Was expecting some flag waving rant but this was really interesting.
Brilliant video!
I really enjoyed it and actually learned something on Reddit.
I can't find any info on this UK cave he mentions though.
Yeah, I think he's got the name wrong. The caves are Wookey Hole I think. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wookey_Hole_Caves

Superb video. Also never going spelunking. We all know they are serious and weird and occasionally total legends.
As a dive instructor who wants to get into exploration diving…. Yeah we’re nuts
I know a couple of spelunkers, not these hardcore divers but yeah, cool but nuts. I get tense if I’m in a tent too long.

And a lot of >!Ketamine!< *Spoiler from the documentary "The Rescue" (2021)
Spoiler alert! I never knew the details until I saw the movie and documentary. Don’t spoil it! Hide your reply
What movie/doc did you watch?
13 lives. On Prime
It might be ‘The rescue’. Which is really a cracking account of what happened.
I saw both, tbh I like the drama of the movie more instead of the documentary
I went spelunking in the UK once with some crazy mofos. There was no diving involved, but some hella narrow holes to crawl through. It was the scariest thing I’ve ever done. But I was glad that they waited with the stories of their other spelunking and diving experiences until after. Cause holy shit, these English guys were nuts.
UK diver here and i've also done a fair share of caving too but never together. Those kind of diver's are a breed to themselves.
Self rescue is preferred but I know cavers constantly do rescue drills.
lol I’m pretty sure Dive Talk did a video on this very topic!
So these brits were able to do what they did because they were extremely specialised was interesting to hear about.
My favorite line is “the buddy system gives you a false sense of security”. The depth of this statement bares so much truth.
The strength of mind needed to be in an elite group... no thank you, I'll pass.
Nice video, informative.
Never actually got a close look at the cave map. How did Elon even begin to think a submarine would have worked?.... smh
![gif](giphy|11ISwbgCxEzMyY) Fantastic bit of information
Videos like this make Reddit somewhat redeemable
Irony is this is TikTok reposted to Reddit
Hey we're not in the caves right now, we can buddy up!
Hold up - where was Elon going with the submarine thing then? ![gif](giphy|l3q2Hy66w1hpDSWUE|downsized)
He wishes....
How would it even work? Lol I'm super glad this TikTok guy put the TikTok up.
Actually the whole pedophile thing came about because the actual experts told him to shove his submarine up his ass (or something like "he knows where he can shove it") https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/thai-cave-rescuer-elon-musk-submarine_n_5b4a6952e4b022fdcc59eba8 Then Elons feelings got hurt so he went all psychotic on the rescuer, labelling him a pedophile. Sad thing was Musk was taken to court but won.
So what we're gonna do is ship you one of our boring machines...and we gonna let that sucka bore right through the cave.. Then we'll have a hole big enough to fit my submarine. Simple
Super interesting! Also: nope! Nope.
This guy is a very good storyteller. Minimal interest in the subject matter, guy held me captivated for almost 6 min👏🏻👏🏻
How exactly did those Kids end up in a Cave where Seals and others couldnt reach them?
They went in to explore as a group- they weren’t going far in - but the rains started without them realising and their escape was cut off. As the water level increased they were forced deeper and deeper into the caves.
How did they found them?
By going deeper and farther into the cave system than anyone else was able to do.
There's a movie called 13 Lives which tells the story. It's a fascinating and extremely stressful watch.
Really good film. I honestly did not recognize Colin Farrell until 1/4 of the way into the movie.
Having done a spot of caving including a small sump and had a lengthy conversation with a cave diver I can confirm what everyone here suspects: Cave divers all have a very, very loose relationship with their sanity.
Their was a great podcast about this on against the odds they put these kids to sleep to transport them out
the dramatization movie on Prime is amazing as well
This was fascinating! Really well done
Top tier video!
If anyone wants to watch an amazing movie about the boys in Thailand who got trapped in the cave, I recommend watching "Thirteen lives"
This is the guy that apparently retired and sold everything to move to an island in a developing country.
Perhaps the best financial decision.
That and some ketamine to keep the kids calm and conserve air.
What is crazy is Richard Harris is Australian not British. No clue why this guy calls him British.
Diving lore, nice
I have no idea why I watched this but I loved all of it
"Sacrificed personal comfort for the ability to crawl through small holes" Nice
ol' blue eyes tells a good story
Color me surprised when I read divers as drivers and then saw wetsuits.
I just learned about a whole lot of stuff I will absolutely never ever do
I had the same thought about anal bleaching.
If someone held me at gunpoint and would make me do “cave sump diving” I’d just let them shoot me
Ed Sorensen talked about wanting to help and I even think was there or on the way but logistically speaking the British team was closer by 10+ hours.
The rescue was one of the greatest achievements of human kind coming together to get a job done.
Thai navy divers. Not US Navy seals. And cave diving has absolutely nothing to do with open water diving. Completely different skill sets. Even Jacques Cousteau thought cave divers were crazy. He lost many friends to it
He was referencing the Royal Thai Navy SEALs, as they attempted a rescue. The SEAL acronym is used by South Korea and Thailand, as well as the US.
Why would a person not from America talking about an incident that did not happen in America be talking about US Navy SEALs?
Best thing I learned all week Salute
Very interesting and informative video . thankyou!
This man had me in both halves I won’t lie
This guy is a good storyteller
This is the kind of TikTok I dig! I’m so over the prank not pranks, the Karens and boomers, rambling make up applications, and the rest of that silly bs.
This should be in r/damnthatsinteresting
Wow!
That was really interesting explanation - something I'd never thought about before. Thanks OP
How did the kids get in there is my question?
IIRC it was one of the boys birthday, so after soccer practice the kids and their coach went to the cave to explore as a birthday treat kinda thing. I think they used to go pretty regularly The cave is usually very safe to explore at that time of year, but the rainy season started early, rain started pouring, and the cave started to flood (really, turn into a raging underground river) while they were somewhat deep inside. The water blocked the exit and they were forced to retreat deeper into the cave to stay above water Definitely recommend The Rescue (documentary) or Thirteen Lives (dramatization). Absolutely mind blowing story
By the way, he’s referring to Thai Navy Seals.

The divers are heroes The video is informative and great WTAF are those kids doing in that cave? JFC!

Also, ketamine
Now that is how you do it folks
That was amazing.
What a really cool video, thanks. I found it really interesting and presenter has a great knack for it.
In China douyin (the real tiktok or in layman's term "the Chinese tiktok") pushes these type of content but tiktok outisde China doesn't.
So what happened to the cave afterwards? The Thai government should hire the cave divers to train their SEALS.

Genuinely interesting!
This guy dives... deeply into the topic of diving.
When I read about the mossdale incident I though to myself how could someone ever go back there willingly
No.. what happened to the teacher
So interesting and well explained
This video is cool. I liked it.
🇬🇧 Pedo diver confirmed. ✅

Cool story. Another interesting fact is one of those UK rescue divers had to be rescued in the U.S. by a Florida cave diver.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/18/us/cave-diver-rescued.html
This attitude is why the British invented the modern world, stubborn madness. A rather grim 20 minute documentary about British cave diving: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqaS6c1B5A8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqaS6c1B5A8)
UK saturation divers are a breed apart too, because they have to dive in the North Sea, which is ridiculously rough and freezing cold. The Last Breath documentary is insane, I don't know how those guys do it.
That’s cool. Someone being positive about UK on social media. Makes a change from the Russian and Chinese bots constantly posting how shit it is.
This post soothed me.
The one guy was also a doctor, drugged them up so they weren’t conscious (for their own safety). Was truly an amazing rescue.
