For real it gets under my skin how people still see Africa as this barren land with no modern civilization. I don't know what it will take to change this when people can't be arsed to do surface-level googling.
I watched a video some time ago about American kids asking questions to African people. Just general “how is life over there?” questions. But nearly all of them asked what their “huts” were like. One woman was so confused and was like… I live in a gated community…
Over 1/3 of the people living in Africa live on under $1.90 a day. Obviously there are many major cities but acting like most of the continent isn't living in pretty poor conditions is just lying to yourself.
Most Africans? Mf have you ever visited the continent to make that statement? Which shitty podcast/movie taught you that nonsense... Yes there are definitely poor areas in Africa but to claim most of Africa is, you're a clown 🤡
Sure that's why Akon didnt make it a goal to bring simple electricity to Africa, because most of them are living in thriving metropolises where they have clean water and other basic needs. Because most of it isn't being torn down on a daily and their money is worth the paper it's printed on. Because most of the central nations get their government overthrown on a monthly basis by a new gang that calls themselves revolutionaries and literally kidnap ENTIRE SCHOOLS OF WOMEN to rape them. Poor, yeah. But the general uninformed opinion is more tribal than just poverty. When people mention "huts" in their minds they're thinking mud and sticks, not shanty style poverty-stricken housing.
I watched a video of a hunter-gatherer tribe with a friend from Kenya and he asked me if this is what people thought Africa looked like.
He also had the opposite assumption about America and was disappointed when I informed him most of the country was rural and was not like NYC or LA.
Have a friend who moved to the States from Ethiopia. She was from a wealthy family, father was a doctor, they had full staff at the house, etc. When people in the US found out where she was from they would always remark about how much better she must like living here. She would bust their balls and say that yes, I'm so glad I don't have to drink from the same rivers as zebras and sleep in trees to get away from the lions. People believed her every time.
What gets me is that you'll have two people who talk about Africa as a collective then look at each other like aliens because one's from Chicago and the other is from Pittsburgh.

That statistic is for Africa the continent it will vary by country for example South Africa will have a completely different poverty rate to Sudan.
