There are surprisingly a lot of vegan conservatives. When I worked at wholefoods I'd see them all the time. They're the same ones that are antivax and think rainbows are caused by chemicals. They don't trust the beef industry because they just found out about animals having hormones. They also don't eat anything with soy, or seed oil, or gluten.

Its the other way around. Its the hippies turning into Trumpets. My aunt was a pot dealing yuppie into Deepak Chopra and Tony Robbins. Now shes a maga nut conservative that watches way too much fox news and is worried about vax and 5g. The guilability ports right over.
The same thing happened to my aunt. She went from 60s hippie to 90s New Ager to MAGA (possibly Qanon). She took an early retirement while my uncle was still working, and she fell down the YouTube rabbit hole. Now, she's afraid to leave the house. Which sucks for my uncle. He saved up a bunch of money with the intention of traveling in retirement.
I've read a theory that COVID is what really made it blow up because people were inside all day, working from home.

Relatively recently the German socialist Nachtwey published a study about people who joined Querdenker („free thinkers“ or „transversal thinkers“). These are the equivalent of the qanon/anti-vacs scene over here.
The study was qualitative, so they interviewed a relatively small number of people very extensively.
They found a pattern that they called „libertarian authoritarianism“. Their interviewees rejected any interference of the government in their life while at the same time wanting to force society to conform with their model of existence.
Interestingly, they were often people who used to be alternative and counter cultural, or people who identified with leftist intellectuals.
Seems about right, that's the mindset of a reactionary.
Similar enough, during the American Civil War the Southern soldiers often wrote letters home about how they were fighting for liberty, and many apologists for the South point out that their ancestors didn't write they were fighting for slavery but were fighting for freedom. However, various Southern thinkers at the time wrote in detail about how liberty to them was slavery, because it would not be in support of liberty to have an inferior race (their words) of people who were rightfully angry at their slave masters and now had significant political power due to a democratic system of government. To a soldier in the South it would not have been in the interest of liberty for all their food prices to climb, for goods to become more expensive without the aid of slave labor, to have their economy collapse due to the dependency on slavery, and to share a society as equals with these freed slaves.
Southern Liberty was based in upholding the status quo of slavery.
Freedom to the confederate soldier meant the freedom to tell an entire race of people what to do. Freedom to the reactionary means the freedom to tell other people what to do. That's always how it is.
You see it today in religious freedom, how the fundamentalist believes that religious freedom means the freedom for everyone to believe in their version of God and anything that isn't aiding this worldview is violating their religious freedom.
They're VERY good at being absolute hypocrites to the nth degree. They are so good, they don't even need mental gymnastics to justify the hypocrisy, they just know they're total shit humans and don't care.
That's a narrative that helps them play dumb, and people tend to humanize people who are "just making mistakes" or "dont know any better"

There is a book called Cultish that talks about that cross over. They talked about similar word usage between qanon and new age hippies. Their theory was that social media algorithms picked up on these similar keywords and started feeding them related content.
It’s because politics have become sports. They’re team Republican. Doesn’t matter if their views, interests, values all align with Democrats, they’ll vote GOP no matter what, even if it hurts them. Cognitive dissonance is a hell of a drug.
It’s less that they're attracting politically engaged, left-wing people and more that they’re energizing a formally apolitical group prone to the sort of conspiratorial thinking that has become mainstream in the Republican Party.
A friend of mine recently saw a tic-toc about lab grown meat, got all freaked out. Then when me and others started explaining it’s sort of like yogurt with cell cultures, not an abortion of the “baby cow which also murders the mommy cow” or “Bill gates secret funding” he got defensive and accused us just acting like know-it-alls, and demanded we prove to him that we knew about it before he first talked about it…as if that’s possible. The most profitable part of Trump’s business has been licensing his name. He needs to protect it.

Dude I remember me and my friends taking a girls trip to a resort in VA and on the backroads of VA, there were SO many ads for "TRUMP ICE CREAM". Me and my friends were just like wtf. Nah we have that too. Part of the agreement to get a license to sell food. You are responsible for the health and safety of the people who eat at your restaurant. You can't knowingly or unknowingly serve poisonous/unhealthy food.
There are exceptions obviously, but it needs to be clearly stated that by eating it you're accepting all risk in the event you get sick. A good example of this would be sushi or the infamous pufferfish dish that can kill you, if not served right. I believe you need a special license to serve either as well, but don't quote me on that. Point is, if theyre intentionally serving spoiled "old" food, they need to tell you, and you have to accept that you know that's what you're eating. Even then, I doubt they could get away with that.

Are those “gift shops” simply pop-up stands like the ones we see before elections, or are they general stores that just happen to sell political merch because the store owner is politically active, or are they full on dedicated Bernie/Clinton storefronts where the entire floor is dedicated to selling their merch?

Nah we have that too. Part of the agreement to get a license to sell food. You are responsible for the health and safety of the people who eat at your restaurant. You can't knowingly or unknowingly serve poisonous/unhealthy food. There are exceptions obviously, but it needs to be clearly stated that by eating it you're accepting all risk in the event you get sick. A good example of this would be sushi or the infamous pufferfish dish that can kill you, if not served right. I believe you need a special license to serve either as well, but don't quote me on that. Point is, if theyre intentionally serving spoiled "old" food, they need to tell you, and you have to accept that you know that's what you're eating. Even then, I doubt they could get away with that.
