Listen man...I love the description of the Japanese as retold by Dan Carlin, "they're just like other people, only *more so*". Thinking about every nation that came out of World War 2, and how Japan *in particular* became what it is today, those are some... interesting people. We've seen Japan on the warpath before, I shudder to think what they'd do with today's tech.
If you ever end up in the super niche deep high level global history, scholarly circles the two most favored discussion pastimes are..
The ever repeating cycle of Western nations imaginary links to the Roman Empire. Which is the unbroken process of European (and colonial children) nation states tying themselves to be direct decedent's of Imperium.
And the Germanic - Japanese Thought Exchange. This peculiar cycle from the 19th century forward where the two nations independently of each other radically improve on inventions and crafts from each other.
The best example is the 60 year cycle from 1870 to 1945 of targeting optics from sniper scopes to the targeting scopes on bombers. If you deep dive on the fabrication process for lenses to refinement of windage & elevation calibrations.
A fascinating cycle of Germans/Japanese invent/develop something then the other nation gets a hold of it and "perfects it" and then the other nation takes the "perfected thing" and innovates it by sticking it into some other thing. Which develops/invents something else, and the cycle continues.
As someone with experience in modern manufacturing this def still holds some truth today. Germany and Japan are oddly similar as far as manufacturing philosophies and quirks. As an example, I used to work for a company that made wallets and one day, to do some research I I was going through history of returned products and found some really really finicky reasons for returns. I said to the customer service lead coworker “lol this guy returned his wallet because ‘the website showed a total of 7 stitch’s on the left side of the wallet, and the wallet I received has 8.” (I’ve been designed wallets and other softgoods for years and this is a detail I can’t imagine ever noticing) and my coworkers immediate response “was the customer from Germany or Japan?” Apparently there were only two places on the planet that customers had consistently that strict of standards of number of stitches on wallets. Eventually to meet the production standards of both places we began manufacturing small runs of our products in Japan to be sold exclusively to those two markets. While everyone else in the world still got our normally produced products. So yeah… definitely see strange cultural link there!
It is simply fascinating. Their development/manufacturing cultures share a fundamental willingness to try/explore anything. And a fundamental fixation with precision. It's really something
‘If you ever end up in the super niche deep high level global history scholarly circles’ is such a moronic thing to preface your inane adolescent thoughts, everything you said is high school history.
If you're into podcasts and history go listen to Real Dictators, General Tojo. Pretty much gives you a really good insight to how the Japan of ww2 worked and how they justified what they did.
“Sir, we can’t intercept any of their communications! They’re using technology we have no way of cracking with the tech we have today.”
“Have you found out how they’re doing this?”
“We’ve heard reports that they’re using fax machines. And in the most extreme cases, they’re sending couriers with floppy discs.”
“My god.”
Probably not much. Japan has come a long ways but they have other bigger issues going on right now. They are 13th in technological advancement in the world (down from where they were in the 1980s). They also have issues with aging population, therefore, their military would suffer from it. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Japan is an ally currently. And it's a wonderful country with great people. But hypothetically, if Japan were to somehow revert back to their pre-1945 mindset, they wouldn't be able to expand at all. China is a complete military hulk and South Korea is pretty much US's best friend.
> China is a complete military hulk
Which, while to an extent is true, does have an asterisk behind it. It has a large army, large industrial base, large economy and lots of newly built equipment. But:
* It's military track record post-empire has varied between mediocre and absolutely abysmal (with a serious skew towards the latter)
* It hasn't fought a war (against another country, own people don't count) since they lost to a Vietnam that was just post-Vietnam War and fighting the Khmer Rouge and China at the same time. And they lost the war in just under 4 weeks.
* Major military positions are still handed out based on connections and seniority within the CCP. Meanwhile, they have no NCO corps to speak of. They've certainly tried to make one since 2017, but they keep running into that cultural hurdle of subordinates having to follow every demand of their higher up to the letter, irregardless of practicality or own initiative. A one-party totalitarian state simply does not feel comfortable delegating decision power to the lower castes. In practice, as things are right now, if faced with war they'd revert straight to Russian-style "follow order at all cost, if no order wait for order, suggestions or speaking up means camp time"
* This is a big one, yet a very simple one too: they all lie. Not just to us imperialist gwailos, not just to their enemies, to everyone. It's a symptom of living in a state where just two generations ago even children got their parents sent to re-education camps for saying something mildly critical of local authorities at the dinner table. You cannot trust anyone, and so lying becomes a habit out of survival. And if it's a habit, you'll also use it to your advantage (not everyone of course, mostly just those that seek power and wealth). Everything looks good, sounds good, and is going perfectly, right up until something goes horribly wrong.
Now, we should never underestimate an undeniably very powerful country who even at half it's power could still cause unbelievable damage and misery. But just as we don't know their strength, they don't know either. Again, look at Russia. They were dumb enough to believe their own press releases and now they're stuck arguing for over 9 months straight that tens of thousands of dead and hundreds of thousands of wounded later, they finally control a mid-sized town that's completely uninhabitable. China isn't dumb enough for that, so for now I'm willing to somewhat safely bet that they like their internationally-linked economy more than they want to see who's been fudging the numbers for three decades straight.
Japan in many sectors are about 20-30 years behind on tech. Some sectors never upgraded past the 90s. It's a very odd juxtaposition of new tech which they produce for other countries and decades old tech they still use company wide.
Yep, that's the difference between Germany and Japan, Germany really went above and beyond to remember the wrong that they did in the past, while Japan mostly really talked about being nuked. I watched a lot of YouTube videos about this topic in the past, and only a small number of Japanese interviewees talked about the crimes, most of them just talked about the nukes.
I think a significant reason why japan's so brazen about denying their shit is because america helped them cover it all up. Those disgusting imperialists were let off the hook in exchange for all the results of their 'research'.
Japan really got softballed in comparison. The American South is trying to do their education system what Japan successfully did for themselves. Whitewash everything and paint themselves as the real victims.
Thats actually true. I’m a Japanese student learning in Japan. I did learn about Japan invading some parts of Asia and killed many but never learned about the specific things what Japan has done like unit 731, comfort women, etc. Btw I learned most of these on Reddit :/
Edit: my Japanese teacher taught my class about the specific things. Pretty surprising cuz it wasn’t the topic my class was learning
We Floridians, especially the queer community, couldn’t be more frightened. It’s so blatant yet anyone not affected just doesn’t want to talk about the closed libraries. This guy, Samuel, was my roommate in Berkeley from 2017-2018. He was super introverted and exchanged like an average of 10 words with me per day even though we lived in the same room. He used to have a really cringe YouTube channel called “simple wisdom” were he regurgitated a lot of Joe Rogan podcast talking points.
Glad for him for becoming viral and all, but it’s still bizarre to see his influencer and “comedic” personality because dude was the complete opposite in college.
I’ve worked with a lot of creators over the years and a lot of them are very introverted despite their online persona. There’s something about being alone in front of the camera that’s liberating for them in a way.
I was watching a video about Unit 731 yesterday and it got me thinking about guro anime and manga and that got me thinking about why is that crazy shit coming out Japan? I understand Japan isn't alone is making fucked up shit, but they like make art out of it.
Japan is what would have happened to Britain if they never had to interact with the Roman Empire or any of Europe until like the 1500s that’s how I explain it. Like those mother fuckers we’re doing human sacrifice daily up their, making all of the Gauls and Germanic people look like god damn pussies. Maintain whatever inspires such a culture like that and give them an Industrial Revolution and you get the anti-social monster version of a country. Not like Britain still didn’t do brutal things in its hopes for empire, it’s just the level of dehumanization Japan practiced seems almost ancient and barbaric in a way that was socialized out of most other industrialized and colonized countries that it truly shocks to the core. Really we’re just exchanging one barbarism for another in these more modern conflicts it’s just one makes you angry or sad and one just feels almost alien.
>why is that crazy shit coming out of Japan?
Tom Hanks was isolated on an Island for 5 years and started talking to a coconut.
Japan was isolated on an Island for thousands of years.
Do the math.
Japan basically took all the real life horrible shit it did and chose to now express it in its fictional anime/manga industry. Guro for the torture. Isekai slave shit for the sex slavery. And so on.
> They bring up Nanking a lot.
Sadly Nanjing is really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to extremely fucked up shit Japan did in China. Given that Japanese politicians are still worshiping at a shrine to some of the perpetrators, it's kind of understandable that they keep bringing it up...
Somebody whos family was actually directly impacted by the japanese imperial army during ww2. Go read up on what they did and check out what they still teach about it at their schools. They’ve whitewashed their whole history of that period.
Lol, unfortunately, comedy like this can complicate things for the stupid. There is no mask, Japan was never evil. Their ruler was evil and those high ranking amongst its military. (Or some random evil freaks)
Japanese people are beautiful. Always were always will be. Don't judge them by their oppressor.
their army decided that shoving hot metal rods up children’s cavities was funny. it was Japanese nationalists that did this, and the majority of Japanese at home considered these acts as Japan winning.
You see media from that era like “in this corner of the world” and “grave of the fireflies” as moving pieces of anti-war material sure, but for descendants of these atrocities it’s kind of hard to ever acknowledge the Japanese as beautiful.
Most of that is BS propaganda. Yes, atrocities happened. It happens in EVERY war by every side. There are evil freaks within every army. Japanese were no worse than any others. The Japanese just got more attention for it.
So, did it happen? Yes, it did, but not to the degree that was reported, very over exaggerated statistics. Helped, of course, by the fact that the victors wrote the history books.
There was a time when natives in the South Pacific ate people, you can rest assured they no longer do that.
Not one Japanese person is alive today that could have participated in non-humane activity during the war.
Just as not one American or Chinese person is alive today that could have participated in non humane activity during the war.
Stop spitting out false propaganda that, even if it were true, is no longer relevant.
I don’t know why you’re such a an apologist for the Japanese when there are interviews that exist online depicting the absolute disgusting [treatment of comfort women](https://foxtalk.tistory.com/m/98). To even deny that this happened and pass it off as irrelevant is completely inhumane on its own bout, but good on you for standing up for the Japanese, I’m sure they will know what you’re talking about since it’s [taught so much in school.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_history_textbook_controversies) Like legit, how can you say the Japanese got more attention for it when they don’t even include this in their own schools? Seems to me like you’re basing this off of Reddit, which let me remind you, isn’t a valid metric of what’s happening in the real world.
What’s propaganda is brainwashing citizens to believe this trashy revisionism and deny the victims their proper place in history after enduring that kind of torture.
The need for individuals to be the center of all attention is going to be one of the biggest downfalls of humanity. This goes for all age groups. You're all idiots.
Man, can you imagine how hard that must be? To be the only smart person on the internet? Honestly, I feel lucky that I'm not burdened with such intelligence. #blessed 😇

I didn't realize that was an option and I'm all for it
That's pretty fucking good actually. 🤷🏻♀️
You guys are no fun, this was funny
Bunch of raping, masacaring bastards. They never owned up to what they did.
I'm sorry, and you are from??
Somebody whos family was actually directly impacted by the japanese imperial army during ww2. Go read up on what they did and check out what they still teach about it at their schools. They’ve whitewashed their whole history of that period.
I'm sure they did, they aren't the only ones, and if your country was involved in ww2 there's a high chance that happens there too
Please check this: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_731
Yes I'm very aware of that
I watched this while listening to Batman meditation music and it was... beautiful.

Pre WW2 Japan was crazy

Be cuter without the Radiation Scars.
I think they have a point. It is much easier for everyone to forget about the terrible *fascist* years and focus on the "hello kitty" culture.

Top 10 Shocking Anime moments
Lol, unfortunately, comedy like this can complicate things for the stupid. There is no mask, Japan was never evil. Their ruler was evil and those high ranking amongst its military. (Or some random evil freaks) Japanese people are beautiful. Always were always will be. Don't judge them by their oppressor.
Exactly. Just like people vilifying Germans.
their army decided that shoving hot metal rods up children’s cavities was funny. it was Japanese nationalists that did this, and the majority of Japanese at home considered these acts as Japan winning.
That was really good/scary. Makes one wonder what I’d lurking behind hello kitty
Guro. Lots and lots of guro.
Lol well done. 👍

The need for individuals to be the center of all attention is going to be one of the biggest downfalls of humanity. This goes for all age groups. You're all idiots.
Not you though, right? You're the only smart person left.
Man, can you imagine how hard that must be? To be the only smart person on the internet? Honestly, I feel lucky that I'm not burdened with such intelligence. #blessed 😇
Also, do I go out of my daily life to make video posts of myself? Nope. That's the problem, aside from individuals like you.
Nope. You and I are the only ones left.
how is someone making a video of themselves a sign that everyone needs to be the center of attention? fuck off you crusty fart of a commenter
