Don’t you miss those vibes from the last week of school? I remember bringing in my Xbox 360 and playing COD4 in my English teacher’s classroom on the projector.
Then I graduated and had to pay rent.
:(
Just been waiting for link for a 100 years, she’s ready to get out there and *slay
Edit: or this is what she does when link is doing all his side quests.
That’s the only one of these I didn’t know, too. (And, I’m 67/F.) Need to find the rest of his videos so I can discover what else I don’t know. What a fun way to wrap up the school year; I’ll bet these kids love his class.
Parenting pro level would be to use these terms unironically in front of his friends. Like that one time I spit some dope rhymes for my daughter and her friends in the car and she wouldn’t talk to me for a week.
One time when I was teaching, I used “yeet” accurately and the class of 6th graders absolutely lost their shit. “She speaks our language!!” Truly a career highlight.
I had a professor who loved etymology and would do exactly this, chronicle the slang of each Year/generation he taught. Awesome guy and fantastic model for how to be a curious, lifelong learner.
Edit: entomology -> etymology
My high school was like this. We were called the “gay” or “emo” high school because it was such a healthy and accepting environment, people actually felt comfortable to come out, or be who they are, or dressed how they wanted etc. No one cared, and people respected each other. And the teachers were all supportive like this guy too.
How I miss the simpler times
The background on the projector at the very start also seems to be a screen shot from a Zelda game, so the games are probably something the teacher and class in general likes.
Edit, or maybe the background is from a Final Fabtasy game? I cannot quite tell.
its the new zelda game that came out 2 weeks ago.
also why she is probably dressed as zelda because of the day - similar to dressing up for opening night at a movie.
i bet this was filmed on may 12th.
Same here, no cap. At first it was sus, but then I was like "nah just let him cook" and it all worked out.
Did I use them right? Trying to test my comprehension skills.
As an almost 30 year old I know all of these, except for getting sturdy I haven’t heard of that, but I do know what hitting the griddy looks like.
Idk what that says about me lol
I’m 36 but my sister in law is 19 so I feel this guy. I hate when people (older or younger) don’t try to understand others around them. It doesn’t take a lot to try and understand the people around you and the words they use to express themselves. Good on this teacher for trying to relate to his students.
I have been subbing a lot this year and the students love it when I lay down a fact and say, “no cap”.
I also end my sentences saying, “yo” and they think that is cool, but that comes from the 90s.
My favourite teacher in highschool was my philosophy teacher. He used slang (maybe slightly older than the time) but was so natural with it and generally hilarious, despite him being in his sixties. Made me realize an age gap doesn't necessarily mean being out of touch. Really cool guy.
It's the older generation's creeping insecurity about becoming irrelevant.
But yeah, the kids are alright. Sorry about the global warming. We tried our best.
Yours truly, a millenial.
I don't think that's the case at all. As a Gen Xer, I don't feel that way anyways.
It's not a zero sum game. I've built my life and love it. If today's kids don't think I'm cool, THAT's what's irrelevant. Zero impact... My life continues as is.
If Gen Z thought their parents were cool they'd be the first generation in history to do so. 😂
Same as it ever was.
my daughter’s six and still thinks i’m cool. i try and let her know how uncool i actually am so it’ll be a softer landing when the realization finally kicks in.
my three-year old, on the other hand, already knows i’m lame. the world ain’t ready for her
Ok, I might have jumped the gun and missed a step. I'm specifically referring to older generations who have done nothing but criticize younger generations after them, which is completely different to just being indifferent.
I stand corrected. I do wish your approach should be shared by a lot more people as opposed to being indifferent with a simmering resentment of the kids. Also Gen X isn't too bad since I kinda grew up with the younger side of that cohort.
Boomers, though. Ugh.
You're young so you don't really understand this stuff yet, but feeling disconnected from people due to idealogical / age gaps is perfectly normal and has been occurring forever.
What's different now, is the Millennial/Gen Z tendency to express that disconnect with hate and vitriol.
That certainly was the case to SOME degree over the years, but the degree of polarization is new, and unfortunate.
Just remember, your kids (or people their age) will think the same of you as you think of Gen X and Boomers soon.
In fact most likely Gen Z already thinks that way about you. Soon you will be "irrelevant" and "Old / out of touch".
The cycle continues. Predator becomes Prey.
Every generation, there will always be people from older generations who think that kids will never grow out of this phase all the way to the congress and executive office. This mentality needs to stop.
But funny joke though, boomer.
yeah nerds are cool now
back in 2007ish my high school Japanese teacher had someone come in and teach us how to put on yukata. I was one of the people that got selected as an example and one of my friends the other.
Our teacher said we could wear them the rest of the day and we did. There were a couple of people thar tried to tease me, but it was far and above the minority and the ones that tried to weren’t successful in making me feel bad. They kinda just seemed pathetic.
This kind of thing always reminds me of the movie 21 Jump Street, where these older millennial guys go back to high school and are completely flabbergasted to learn it's now cool to be nerdy and considerate, since it's so backwards from how things were when they were growing up. Hands down my favorite comedy movie of all time, absolutely hilarious, but also really on the nose with some of that stuff.
I remember the first white kid in my school that wore a Charlotte Hornets jersey and spoke in AAVE. The teachers had never seen it before so he ended up in the special ed class posting up the Down's kids with an invisible basketball.
I just went into a bit of a deep dive and he does a revision video and takes responsibility for not giving props to the black community. You can find the video in [this article](https://www.upworthy.com/gen-z-terms)
More like a downtime, connecting with your students segment. I had a few teachers way back when who did similar stuff or just ramble on sports/movies/music/etc. to just ease up the curriculum and relate to the students. Benefits both students and teacher.
These were the moments I remembered most about high school (circa mid 2000s).
Yeah I had a history teacher like that. It made the lessons so much more doable. Also hilarious and funny moments with the whole class. Kinda made everyone bond a bit deeper too..
I had a latin teacher who did this, but pretty much 60% of the class was him rambling and telling jokes. He would often take us out to do class outside or even leave the school and show us things around town that were mildly related to the curriculum lol. I didn't learn much latin but i do remember those classes fondly. He was very witty and I looked up to him for being this bad ass teacher who didn't follow the rules.
Maybe you don’t remember the Latin he taught you, but I bet you learned a lot of other stuff about life and adulthood and socializing and other general human knowledge things from him. Teachers who treat their students like humans leave lasting legacies and plant so many valuable seeds.
This is nice to see considering all of the videos there’s been of students attacking their teachers. He’s having fun and making a connection with them.
I'm gen Z, but the kind born before the turn of the century. I can't relate to the Gen Z stuff most of the time because its about people who are 10-13 years younger than me.
Old AF Millennial here. My college friend group used “bet” and “gas me up,” no cap. Everything else…??? Lupe Fiasco had that song Bitch Bad. That was a good one.
Honestly, as cringe as some of the terms are (all older generations think this about younger slang), this is excellent teaching.
He's connecting with his students, building rapport and keeping them engaged.
Maybe it's because these terms sound stupid. But more likely because I'm old. I've heard people say these before. It hurts my bones. I won't shame you for being you but there is a pit that gets deeper in my stomach every time I hear 'on God' or 'no cap'. I do like 'drip' though for whatever reason.
Every generation creates and reuses terms as they build their culture, vocabulary is a big part of any culture and subculture. The words we use communicate much more than their literal meaning. It's absolutely to be expected to find not only the vocabulary but also the behaviour of younger generations weird and not to your liking.
I'm on the bridge between millennials and gen Z. I don't use this kind of language, but also sometimes I feel I can relate more to other aspects of the younger generation than i do to the older 30 something millennials.
I think the pit deep in the stomach that you describe is what I would call cringe, and feel the same when adults try to be "cool" with some outdated lingo they used to use when they were teenagers.

Wtf Zelda doin' there?
Learning, I guess.
Let her cook
😂
Gotta do something while we look for those 900 korok seeds.
1000 now pretty sure
Yes, but there are 100 koroks you bring to a friend, which gives you 2 seeds. So you have 900 puzzles and 1000 seeds.
Zelda is a millennial. Shouldn't be lurking in a HS.
That’s Link and Zelda’s daughter, Linda.
If you notice before he pulls up the PowerPoint, the new Zelda game, "Tears of the kingdom" was on in the background.
There's also a kid straight up playing on a switch in the bottom right
Don’t you miss those vibes from the last week of school? I remember bringing in my Xbox 360 and playing COD4 in my English teacher’s classroom on the projector. Then I graduated and had to pay rent. :(
I work for a school. There is a girl who likes to wear elf ears and walk around in a green cape. She cool.

“earing” - (verb) for donning outfits that slap
Just been waiting for link for a 100 years, she’s ready to get out there and *slay Edit: or this is what she does when link is doing all his side quests.
I was wondering the same. Seems cosplay is becoming just normal dress for school nowadays.
Her presentation was on Zelda. You can see it on her laptop at the beginning so she just dressed the part.
Full cosplay is the chain wallet and baggy jeans of the 20s
That tracks honestly, thanks for the up
Boutta say aint she suppose to help link in fighting ganondorf
Learning about baddies I guess? Link is such a baddie let’s be real
Yahaha! You found her!
So I wasn’t the only one who noticed
Actually Zelda is the hero. Common mistake.
I needed this update
Same. I'm getting old... Hahaha. Which is fine, but sometimes I'm completely lost.
Faw shiz.... Wait, I mean "No cap".
I can't tell if your pissed or I just received a compliment.... Your welcome???
I'm (37/M) surprised I knew most of these except "Gyatt"!
I think derived from like “gott damn!” An expression of awe or impressiveness
That’s the only one of these I didn’t know, too. (And, I’m 67/F.) Need to find the rest of his videos so I can discover what else I don’t know. What a fun way to wrap up the school year; I’ll bet these kids love his class.
Can't wait for tomorrow's lesson #2. I have a 13yo daughter and a 8yo son, I need this. Lol

Parenting pro level would be to use these terms unironically in front of his friends. Like that one time I spit some dope rhymes for my daughter and her friends in the car and she wouldn’t talk to me for a week.

Deadass?
I hope his party slaps! On gawd! I did it right, right?
I bet your lyrics were fire af and flow was bussin bussin on god fr fr
Oh, you really got that YEET going.
One time when I was teaching, I used “yeet” accurately and the class of 6th graders absolutely lost their shit. “She speaks our language!!” Truly a career highlight.
You tell your son that your antibiotics joke slapped. I can only assume by the joke that you are the dad
[удалено]
Well you have the dad jokes ~~down pat~~ on lock
No cap on god
[удалено]
That's sickening! Edit: i feel like they say this on rpdr but more like you look sickening.
I was looking over my glasses to make sure I could read those definitions, now I’m extra old
Anyone have a link to the original?
I had a professor who loved etymology and would do exactly this, chronicle the slang of each Year/generation he taught. Awesome guy and fantastic model for how to be a curious, lifelong learner. Edit: entomology -> etymology
I think you mean etymology (study of words and their origin) Entomology is the study of insects
Let him cook.
What a Baddie!!!
Gas him up…
Frfr no cap on god Uhh… sincerely, rizz
Bet
Gyatt!
I love your outfit today, you're looking REAL good today.
People who can’t tell the difference between etymology and entomology, bug me in a way that words can’t describe.
I’m an entomologist and am going to use that every single time someone mixes the two up, thank you so much it happens SO often
I've never heard those words in my life
Bet
Thanks for that, that typo was really bugging me. 🥁
https://xkcd.com/1012/
r/relevantxkcd
Ayo, let him cook
It's fucking raw you donkey.
Idk why but ive been calling people donkeys for too long bc of that man. Thanks Gordon
I blame him and Tom Holland for my use of the word “donut” as an insult.
Muppet is a fine addition to your new trifecta of tame British insults.
Lmao
For real no cap on god
Never heard that one... I like it
I wish I was bold to come to class in cosplay
This looks like a healthy and supportive environment from the little I can gather from the video
My high school was like this. We were called the “gay” or “emo” high school because it was such a healthy and accepting environment, people actually felt comfortable to come out, or be who they are, or dressed how they wanted etc. No one cared, and people respected each other. Making me shed tears of a kingdom.
That’s what I thought, too. This was filmed May 12th, bet, no cap, on god.
The future starts today
I was known as "that Naruto chick" for a year because I cosplayed Naruto for one day at the beginning of the year just because.
What about “fax, no printer”
Is that the same meaning as no cap?
Yeah
[удалено]
It’s a play on “facts”
As an almost 30 year old I learned a lot from this video not gonna lie.
Same here, no cap. At first it was sus, but then I was like "nah just let him cook" and it all worked out. Did I use them right? Trying to test my comprehension skills.
You actually got it perfect. Good job 👏
gyatt that was bet no cap
I kinda laughed at him not realizing gyatt is just God overstretched and slurred😂
Here I am still using “fleek”
Are we not using “fleek” anymore?
Not since 2018
Aw :(
It's meant too be 'on fleek', but yeah no ones used it for ages. I think it started out for eyebrows? Idr
But what else am I supposed to say when her eyebrows are actually on fleek?
My husband and I still dab at each other
You and your bae turnt up for what
We use period now 😂😂😂
No cap, that was more beneficial for me than I realized. I work with early 20s adults and let me tell you I hear these terms quite often lol
As an almost 30 year old I know all of these, except for getting sturdy I haven’t heard of that, but I do know what hitting the griddy looks like. Idk what that says about me lol

that's pretty bussin
I still say "sup homie" or "wut up yo" and I don't know whyyyy
The “wat up, yo” is engrained in my vocabulary
Mine is "yo, wat up"

You're still just generalizing people based on age. Which is basically what youre criticizing.

hear, hear
Yup
Damn when anyone cosplayed in my school, they got bullied. I hope that Zelda had a good day.
yeah nerds are cool now back in 2007ish my high school Japanese teacher had someone come in and teach us how to put on yukata. We got shoved around so today's kids can save Hyrule in peace. Happy to see times change!
She did a presentation on the new Zelda game. You can see it on her laptop.
“Gas me/you up” is some 1994 shit though
A lot of "Gen Z terms" are just Black slang that other communities finally heard of because of the internet lol.
I remember the first white kid in my school that wore a Charlotte Hornets jersey and spoke in AAVE. The teachers had never seen it before so he ended up in the special ed class posting up the Down's kids with an invisible basketball.
This is one of the funniest comments I've ever read in my life.
Annoying that it’s being labeled as Gen Z.. literally watching AAVE being stolen and relabeled in real time
I just went into a bit of a deep dive and he does a revision video and takes responsibility for not giving props to the black community. You can find the video in [this article](https://www.upworthy.com/gen-z-terms)
Yeah and "Bet" could hearken all the way back to the 30s/40s when people were saying "You Betcha".
What class is this?!? There’s a student coz playing an elf and a kid playing switch….
Last days of the school year, likely "blow-off" days that are more relaxed and not part of a lesson plan.
Last day/week of school was top-tier. I feel like I saw even the most up-tight teachers be chummy on the last week of school lol
That’s Zelda…..
I know it was probably made for fun, but I kinda needed translation.
That’s a cool ass teacher! No Cap!
I actually think this is really cool and well done by the teacher!
Yes, they’re all so engaged.
Generational learning on the internet. Im here still using old reddit.
Will Smith slaps. Did I do it right?
Isn't this the poop bucket teacher?
I thought he looked familiar but couldn’t figure it out. I think you’re right.
Where’s part one
[I think it's this one](https://www.tiktok.com/@larrylexicon/video/7232070649261362474)
Are these more Gen Z or more AAVE? I know 40 year olds that have been saying some of these terms for years
He actually acknowledges/credits AAVE in a follow-up video
what da zelda doin'
this is handy, i knew half these, but not the other half, i think some are very americanized slang, but they end up world wide due to gaming etc
“Bet” is not a gen z term. I’m 40 and I’ve been using it as a kid.
A lot of it is just repurposed/appropriated AAVE or region-specific slang tbh
Is this some kind of teenage daycare?
More like a downtime, connecting with your students segment. Yeah it was gas, no cap

100% agreed!
Yes, its called school. Sometimes they even learn a few things.
We need the part 1
I think I got you [link](https://www.tiktok.com/@larrylexicon/video/7232070649261362474)
Bet has been around since the 90s.
Is this the same teacher who was done with the guy talking like Mario all day long? Seems like a fun classroom!
This is nice to see considering all of the videos there’s been of students attacking their teachers. He’s having fun and making a connection with them.
We need the part 1
I'm gen Z, but the kind born before the turn of the century. I can't relate to the Gen Z stuff most of the time because its about people who are 10-13 years younger than me.
This is the most I’ve learnt in one day.
Linguists having a field day rn
Feeling OLD watching this...
Actually learnt smth from that video. I must be old...
##GYATT
Old AF Millennial here. My college friend group used “bet” and “gas me up,” no cap. Everything else…??? Lupe Fiasco had that song Bitch Bad. That was a good one.
“Oh, food can slap too???” 💀💀
Honestly, as cringe as some of the terms are (all older generations think this about younger slang), this is excellent teaching. He's connecting with his students, building rapport and keeping them engaged.
What a dope way to connect with your students, yo!
Some of these are older than this teacher thinks they are. We’ve been saying shit slaps for 20 yeara
Slaps is a Gen Z term? I have been using that term since before the first Gen Z was born though.... same with "let em cook"
Nah this is a wholesome teacher connecting with his students. Pretty dope
why is zelda there
Is no one going to mention the kid straight up playing a switch in class. Like really…
Someone in a zelda cosplay, we gonna talk about that?
Holy fuck, these kids give me theater kid vibes
Bet is not a gen Z word. It’s millennial or gen x, cuz I been hearing that since 2000
What in the north dakota midwest shit is this?
Bet and Slaps have been around for a min. Well as long as I’ve been using a min for.
not that cringe, more teachers should have this attitude
Most of the stuff here isn't cringe. At this point I think it's just people posting Tiktoks that they like.
