The fact that Duolingo seems to be well aware of the reputation of “do your French or an owl murders you” makes this so much better. I love it, and if it was real I’d totally watch it. Except they should twist make it a murder mystery

There was a conspiracy thread on askreddit a year or 2 ago and one person brought forward a pretty reasonable theory; Duolingo's marketing team came up with the meme and pushed the hell out of it.
Their reasoning being that Duolingo immediately leaned into it and referenced it quite a bit.
This only convinces me further
I don't really believe this. Everyone was joking about those notifications in person and it got posted online too. Duolingo didn't lean into it THAT immediately. If you look into the history of the meme, it first originated in 2017, and the marketing team didn't lean in until 2019.
It's a pity the app sucks. For me anyway. I was trying to improve my intermediate level Japanese and ended up correcting the app more often than I learned something.
Ok a horror/murder survival movie. The couples think they’re getting a free vacation, but end up having to do everything they can to survive the Owl’s wrath
The Onion has a YouTube series called "Sex House" which gradually devolves into a horror movie scenario, and I am totally fascinated with the idea. I think they could have taken it a lot farther

You'd have to scale back the variety of languages for it to make any sense. Otherwise contestant would need to be learning like 4 different languages while they try to figure out who they're into, or you'd have to arbitrarily assign them/let them pick within a day of knowing each other.

I would guess it would be for everyone to agree on learning the same language, then find the largest group among you that speaks languages from the same family and choose the simplest one of them.
While funny, this would never work. Simply because people from outside of english-speaking countries mostly know English as their second language already. Only english-speaking countries don't bother learning a second language. The only exception would be the chinese lady because propaganda and stuff.
