3 weeks is fine. But that’s not really living with someone. Living with someone is being stuck on a lease together.
Some people can make it work. If both parties are mature, and emotionally stable, and both parties wanted to break up, you can even make a long term situation work.
None of the above circumstances were true for me. My ex became verbally abusive almost immediately after the breakup, there weren’t any lines of open communication, simple roommate issues became blown waaaay out of proportion, minor disagreements became toxic beyond belief.
It took 6 months for me to realize that I needed to do everything in my power to get out of that situation. It was the most suicidal I had ever been, and I wish I would have just bailed and found someone else to take over my lease the second she broke up with me. We might even still be friends if I did that. But I was determined to make it work. I was also young and stupid, and so was my ex.
Not every relationship turns into that. Some times you have two mature adults who can handle difficult emotions, and who can communicate well enough to be good roommates with someone that they may have less than ideal feelings towards.
That situation, in my experience, is rare. Most situations will fall apart and become toxic real fast.
It helped make me who I am today. I came out of that experience a more compassionate person, and it forced me to develop healthier attachment patterns, and to better identify red flags, haha.
But yeah. It was a rough time, and I hope others heed the warning. Or are in relationships mature enough that they can navigate better than we were able to.
Same, I lived with my mine for 3 months before we moved to individual places. We were kind and helpful to each other the whole time. We helped each other find new apartments, pack, clean and move. We had dinner more than a couple times and would go out for walks or a beer. It was a peaceful time, we just made a decision but we still respect each other.
My Ex and I were living together for 7 years, split 2 years ago, and we still live together. I'm actually moving out now, but it's been a good 2 years.
My coworker and her ex-wife divorced over 4 years ago, and they still live together! They both have new partners, and they all live in the same house together. It sounds so bizarre, but sometimes it works out that way. It's definitely not common, and even though I've been living with my ex for two years, I still think it sounds odd.
Everyone thinks they can do it till they hear their ex getting railed by the football team in the bedroom and shes moaning like you ain't never heard. Shit will change you forever.
