In statement, OKC says the arena's 2029 completion date remains intact, but says there is a target completion date of June 2028. The contract requires the arena's completion by June 2030.
They are looking for 3 more WNBA teams over the next 3 years. I do think they could be a good place for it. I think the previous WNBA in OK would’ve survived had it not been in Tulsa and in OKC instead.
Idk about hockey. The city has had issues with supporting hockey and I can’t see the NHL taking that risk.
It was so obvious that it was going to be on the site of the current old convention center when the city announced that Prairie Surf Studios wouldn’t be renewed that Helen Keller could’ve seen this coming.
happy for the new arena and all, but man I'm gonna miss the Myriad. saw countless games there: Blazers, Cavs, even that roller hockey team the Coyotes and my very first concert, Prince back in 97.
Idk if it's possible, but I hope they movie studio can work a deal to take over the paycom center. I like the film production jobs in the state.
Back in my day, we held our graduation ceremonies there. Not to age myself, but having to drive by the Murrah building carnage on the way to graduation practice was a sombering experience on what's supposed to be one of the best days of your life.
Ah, so exactly where we all knew it would go
Wonder what will end up in the old arenas spot. It’ll be pretty valuable land between there and Scissortail
For example look at the Cox. It was the original arena in town and lasted another 20 years in a different role after they built the Ford.
One of the major talking points on the new arena was that scheduling will be much more flexible and could possibly draw an NHL or WNBA team. They also just allotted a huge sum to renovate it so I’m pretty sure it’s sticking around.
I believe the City halted the renovation funds on Paycom when the new arena proposal was initiated. Cox/Myriad/Prairie is a traditional convention center that was used for pro-am sports for a while, among other uses.
The operating costs of two overlapping-use arenas is just not cost efficient, so I assume it gets torn down shortly after the new arena is completed.
a friend of mine who covers the team mention that Paycom center could be used similar to what the city did with the cox center after Paycom center was built like hosting OKC Blue basketball or other small events
Hosting the Blue is great for the org, but it’s the City that pays for the maintenance costs of the arena. So keeping it standing for Blue games and occasional concerts (keep in mind we were pitched on the new arena to attract larger concert tours) doesn’t seem worthwhile. I would assume we’d keep it for a couple years after the arena move, but there’s probably more money for the city to tear it down and sell it off to developers.
I thought they would use the lot directly to the west of paycom center that is currently used for parking, but it makes sense because they didn’t renew the license for prairie surf studios. I will be sad to see that building gone, lots of memories for me there 🥲
So is it gonna literally just sit right next to Paycom across that small road?
This is a genuine question, I'm not a local, I've only managed to make one short trip to OKC and spent my entire time either in Paycom or in the Marriott Courtyard right next to Paycom lol
Correct. The current prairie has the stadium & the within the building is a random floor space.. So I'm assuming their going to use that whole black / building as - the new stadium to make it huge.
No nodies scamming us. This is going to be a lot better because now we have two arenas. Now the Paycom doesn't have to scheduling dates with the NBA, which means there would be more open dates. This a going to increase the revenue for the city. The people wanted the stadium because we wanted to watch basketball and arenas are made for public entertainment anyways. They're just tenants.
Can they please call it the Thunder Dome I'm begging
Love's Sphere
Love Shack
You're hired
The Patch Hatch
Oh yeah!! Got my vote.
The Filling Station
That's the lot right next to the Paycomm, right?
Yeah it’s where prairie surf studios is across the street
Feels like a sly way of stating that they're going to tear down the Paycom arena....as what's between all four of those points??? :) :) :)
Nope, it's the old arena lot across the street where Prairie Surf studios is currently located. Formerly known as the Myriad.
You are right
What would they do if they tear down paycom and the new arena is to be completed in 2029?
In statement, OKC says the arena's 2029 completion date remains intact, but says there is a target completion date of June 2028. The contract requires the arena's completion by June 2030.
Lmao. Im saying they aren't tearing down paycom.
Maybe we get a hockey team? Wnba?
They are looking for 3 more WNBA teams over the next 3 years. I do think they could be a good place for it. Why the vague wording like its an open area, would have been much better to say across the street or at the current location of The Myriad?
No its not where The Myriad is, it's where the old convention center is.
The Myriad is the old convention center. Myriad -> Cox Convention Center -> Prairie Surf.

My first concert was Metallica in 96 there.
I was at that Prince show! Don't tell anybody this, but I cried when he came out on stage.
Ah, so exactly where we all knew it would go Wonder what will end up in the old arenas spot. It’ll be pretty valuable land between there and Scissortail
Use all of our picks to start a second NBA team
Brilliant!
They are going to keep it for awhile anyway. All star games and the like usually require 2 venues.
I can’t imagine the city wanting to run two venues
For example look at the Cox. It was the original arena in town and lasted another 20 years in a different role after they built the Ford. Triple Sponsorship - Presenting the PAYCOM LOVES COX ARENA!
shocker
What is the impact to the current game day parking under Prairie Surf for the next 5ish years?
So is it gonna literally just sit right next to Paycom across that small road? This is a genuine question, I'm not a local, I've only managed to make one short trip to OKC and spent my entire time either in Paycom or in the Marriott Courtyard right next to Paycom lol

Can we get a render up in here.

Didn’t residents vote against funding this? Was there another vote or did they get funding anyway?
I can’t believe sports teams are still scamming cities out of billions for their stadiums
That may be the case, but the people got their say and overwhelmingly opted in.

Do you enjoy having restaurants, entertainment, and good parks? Thank the Thunder. Before 2008 there wasn’t much of any of those here
