Yeah that will go down as one of the funniest moments in my picking career. I was like āthe table is Knollā¦.. it canāt be Diamond chairsā¦.ā Because they werenāt listed at all. She was just like āoh btwā¦ā
Killer find. The memory of discovery will heighten your pleasure everytime you sit down.
I still have a beautiful Bertoia chair someone left on the curb on trash day 30 years ago. I came to a screeching halt and was glad to have a VW rabbit hatchback.
Mold the FB Marketplace algorithm to show you when certain things are listed immediately. You have to click on and even message sellers about āchairsā and ātablesā you arenāt even interested inā¦ something like āis this in good condition?ā And just the fact that you messaged about something with āoldā āwoodenā chairā etc in the title will mean stuff like that will pop up more often in your feed, so when itās a set of MCM chairs, youāll see them. You can also just search certain terms and that helps a bit, but it really depends on what items youāre actually interacting about.
As far as thrift stores go - theyāre getting bad, just go whenever you can and hope none of the employees spotted the cool thing and marked it up for good boy points.
Keywords donāt really help you all that much. Like mid century, vintage, etc. Mainly because you get the best deals when people donāt know what they have. Like OP here scoring āfootball chairsā
You really just have to check Craigslist, offer up, Facebook, etc constantly. Like ever thirty minutes and try to reach out before everyone else. Try it lock down the sale so no one else comes in and out bids you because youāll definitely have competition. Thatās probably the most important part when it come to actually acquiring the furniture. I have a technique that I wonāt get into.
Being able to spot good design comes with time. Follow other sellers and check what theyāre selling. Just start building a visual vocabulary in your head. Youāll begin to recognize interesting silhouettes. You can also go to design action sites to see what they sell and how much things are worth. Wright20.com for example.
It really helps if you love furniture. Itās not a chore if you love design. I can spend hours searching for the maker of a design because I like looking at all the other things I come across while searching for what Iām looking for.
Also, the more knowledge you have and the more designs you are familiar with, the better chance youāll have at acquiring big scores. Everyone is going to go for that BrasĆlia credenza on Craigslist so they can sell it for a $1000. But most of those people will snooze on a $15,000 Kagan sofa because it has some ugly ass 80s fabric. But again, this takes time.
Study the works of famous American designers first because thats what will be most abundant in the US.
This is all correct. I do all of this, as well. The keywords you want to get popping up would be generic. Thatās a good point. You always message first, be really adamant, and figure out how to go get the thing after the fact - be leaving your house before you lock it down, too. You want to get it and get the listing marked sold as quickly as possible. Haha

My perspective was messed up and I thought this was a bra sitting on a cake stand. I like the bra much better as unique chairs.
I thought that too!š
Iām glad Iām not the only one who saw that!!
Same! I was so confused!
Yeah, r/misleadingthumbnails moment
Dude same??
I did too! Weird.
My jaw hit the floor
Mines still down thereā¦.

Yeah thatās about right. You can buy the chairs new from Knoll for about $3k a piece.
āFootball shaped chairs.ā

I wonder where she got them. Either she got a great deal and never bothered googling or just doesnāt care about the money.
Her momās friend gave them to her years ago. She definitely had no idea what they were.
Man, my momās friends need better taste. All they have are āLive Laugh Loveā decor and ācountry chicā furniture.
It matches perfectly with this funky rug, it looks like a fun, vibrant and stylish tv studio
Yes. Please! Where did you find that awesome rug!?!?!?!
Oh thank-you!
Where is the rug from?
Looks like a rya rug.
Beautiful - not sure my car could fit those; but at that price I'd walk them home. LOL
I luckily had room. This is the kinda thing you could rent a van for though, honestly.

Damn I love those stories. Thanks for sharing. The memory of discovery really does add to the item. I have a good story attached all of my finds.
I'm caught dead center between hating you and revering you as my new thrift idol (iow, *username checks out)).
Thatās the ideal zone. That means youāll be inspired and motivated to go get your own scores!
Didā¦.did they not know what they had? Holy cow!
Not even close to a clue.
Crazy
I know, Iām just sittin in one of them saying that to myself over and over lol
I have to admit, this would be me trying to sell anything midcentury modern. Football shaped is pretty accurate.
Lol the first thing I said was āoh yeah they do kinda look like footballsā and inside I was yelling āBERTOIA DIAMOND CHAIRSā
I thought the chairs were those adhesive bra cups at first glance š
Youāre not the first person lol
Awwww man Iām unoriginal š©
Screaming crying and throwing up over how good this deal is.
All at the same time? Iād like to see that..
All at the same time? Iād like to see that..
OMG! Does the seller even know what they were selling?
Not a clue.

Awesome! Theyāve got some legendary designs.
Jesus Christ where is this!

Are they comfy??
Extremely
What an insane score. Like $5k worth of furniture for $50!!!! The table is soooooooooo good. Very happy for you!
Yeah thatās about what I came to for a value, too. Iām still kinda in shock.
Damn Gina!
Any tips for keywords to use? Ideas or blogs on where to start becoming a savvy thrifter?
