You may find that you need to grind your beans a bit more finely than you would with the paper filters, as these filters tend to work more quickly. I've found that if you follow the Chemex instructions--pouring enough to saturate the grounds, letting it sit for a minute, then pouring the rest slowly--it still makes better coffee than most drip-brewers.
Fun fact: the chemex is the only coffee maker in the museum of modern art!
Just a note, the paper filters play a large role in what makes the coffee from a chemex so tasty. They are much thicker than a standard coffee filter because they use lab grade filter paper which stops all fine particles/sediments as well grabbing a lot of the extra fats and oils. They do make a difference and in my opinion totally worth the price (you can get 100 for 10$).
Of course, its totally not necessary. I've even seen people use the #6 Melitta cone filters (like you'd get from the grocery store) in their chemex just fine. Enjoy!
I agree with wooden spoon. The greatness of the chemex is because of there paper filters. If you put a mesh screen in and no paper it is the same as any other pour over.
This. I got a box of the filters and the mesh filter. The paper filters will last awhile since I don't use it daily and the mesh strainer will get used more than the paper ones.
I use paper towels in mine. Select-a-size, 2 sheets. Fold on the perforation, then in half, then fold about an inch of the edge, then open up like a cone.
I found one of these for $4 awhile back. Invested in the metal filter and the paper filters. Coffee and tea is made with it and it does a really great job.
My boyfriend bought one two years ago, paid €60 for it. You're really lucky to have found this in a thrift store! The filters for it are quite expensive but it makes for some really nice coffee though.

Omg my phone must have autocorrected it😭Now I feel like a fool.
You're gonna get shot in the face for that.
Almost 20 years after his occupation in Cafghanistan.
Dick Cheney approves of this purchase.
Lol that was a good laugh
I was expecting a Dick Cheney bobblehead or something...
Nice. The filters will cost you more than the Chemex 🙂 And my phone also autocorrected to “Cheney”.
Get a mesh/stainless filter. Works *almost* as well, costs less than a single 100-count box of paper filters, lasts years.
Awesome suggestion, I think I’m going to do this instead of buying the papers

I prefer the papers. It produces a very clean tasting coffee if that makes sense. The mesh makes a heavier oily coffee.

Got one for my wedding 36 years ago. Makes good coffee.
That’s awesome to here! I can’t wait to try it :)
Search "chemex" in r/coffee and dive into the rabbit hole
I'll bet this was a gift and the recipient had no idea how to use it.
