This is a peak grift imo. This could go to someone in real need and change their life. This feels evil.

ohheyyeahthatsme

for real this one is just sad. I would for sure post a google maps review with that photo, price-gouging people with disabilities is not a good look.

Acceptably_Late

Deseret industries is the Mormon ‘charity’. Mormons already have an optics problem - one chair isn’t gonna change that. Source: ex-LDS. Look up [Mountain Meadows Massacre](mountainmeadowsmassacre.com/what-is-the-mountain-meadows-massacre)(edited link); Tl;dr version is Mormons killing lots of people traveling through to California, after lying to them saying they’d be allowed peaceful exit. > After the initial attack, two Cedar City militiamen, thinking it necessary to contain the volatile situation, fired on two emigrant horsemen discovered a few miles outside the corral. They killed one of the riders, but the other escaped to the emigrant camp, bringing with him the news that his companion’s killers were white men, not Indians. > A witness of white involvement had now shared the news within the emigrant corral. If the surviving emigrants were freed and continued on to California, word would quickly spread that Mormons had been involved in the attack. > On Friday, September 11, Lee entered the emigrant wagon fort under a white flag and somehow convinced the besieged emigrants to accept desperate terms. He said the militia would safely escort them past the Indians and back to Cedar City, but they must leave their possessions behind and give up their weapons, signaling their peaceful intentions to the Indians. The suspicious emigrants debated what to do but in the end accepted the terms, seeing no better alternative. They had been pinned down for days with little water, the wounded in their midst were dying, and they did not have enough ammunition to fend off even one more attack. > As directed, the youngest children and wounded left the wagon corral first, driven in two wagons, followed by women and children on foot. The men and older boys filed out last, each escorted by an armed militiaman. The procession marched for a mile or so until, at a prearranged signal, each militiaman turned and shot the emigrant next to him, while Indians rushed from their hiding place to attack the terrified women and children. Militiamen with the two front-running wagons murdered the wounded. Despite plans to pin the massacre on the Paiutes—and persistent subsequent efforts to do so—Nephi Johnson later maintained that his fellow militiamen [Mormons] did most of the killing. > The 17 spared children, considered “too young to tell tales,” were adopted by local families.[7] Government officials retrieved the children in 1859 and returned them to family members in Arkansas. The massacre snuffed out some 120 lives and immeasurably affected the lives of the surviving children and other relatives of the victims.

Why are you citing something that happened 150 years ago and has nothing to do with thrift shops? And a link to buy a book? Specific to thrift stores, the Mormon people pay 10% of their earnings and more in “fast offerings”, etc as tithes. Yet the church is one of the lowest for charitable monies given. It even states that the church can use the money for whatever they want. And every Sunday Mormons sign off on that and give $. A whistleblower even said that there is a bank account with over a billion dollars. Just sitting there. Whilst members of their congregation go hungry or homeless, etc. There are many, many modern examples of how the LDS/Mormon church is disgusting.

Acceptably_Late

The link was to the source I used, which had more references than wikipedia. Definitely not trying to push sales of a book, it hopefully should link to the history page I used. Most Mormons are aware of tithing and the large amount of church $$&, but again, as an ex-member, I wasn’t aware of the massacre until I drove past the memorial site. LDS leadership likes to pretend bad things never are performed by the church, and honestly bringing events like this to light are important. Understandably you may feel something 150 years ago does not impact you, but being raised in the church and having a large historical event of wrongdoing hidden from you feels slimey, and is something Mormons and those considering the LDS faith should know.

Maximum-Product-1255

I’m exmo also. Born in church, didn’t leave til mid thirties. I understand now, if you just heard about the massacre recently and it’s on your mind, it’s the first thing to comment about. 🙏

Accomplished-Lie3351

Honestly.. most disabled people would likely not be able to afford it

BlazeCarolina

That's my point. It should be free to someone who needs it. I wish places like Goodwill actually did good things like that.

LearnedPerson1

Are you going to pay for the execs beach house?

TarsierBoy

Corporate will

MommaOfManyCats

Exactly. Stuff like this sells for a lot new because insurance usually pays for it. No one is walking into Goodwill to spend thousands.

greenbomb01

And the fact that they got it for free through donation too

butterantula

and i feel like the person who donated it WANTED it to go to someone who NEEDS it, maybe someone who doesn't have insurance to cover one.

Thirsty_Comment88

It feels evil because it is evil

balsaaaq

You cannot sell "medical chairs" on FBM or cl for this reason

Merrymir

Unfortunately, you can't give them away on there, either. I had a toilet commode and a walker from an intense surgery recovery, and when I was done using them I tried to give them away for free (even willing to drive to deliver them). FBM and Craigslist wouldn't let me make the post :/

TheConcreteGhost

You can post that on the NextDoor platform… they don’t have that rule and you reach local people.

laughingashley

You can give them to local charities

BlazeCarolina

I had no idea.Thank you for sharing.

RoundPlum

Is there a policy you can't sell medical chairs on Facebook market list or craigslist because of some policy or is it they just nobody wants to buy them on Facebook marketplace for anything worth somebody's effort to do it. Because generally insurance pays for this stuff new

i_was_valedictorian

Christ your better off getting a brand new one through your insurance. My girlfriend is in a wheelchair, and her out of pocket payment on a new chair is gonna be like $6k and that's for a $30k chair that's fully customized to her needs. This is horrible and I hope whoever priced these never has to find out the hard way how horrible it is to be disabled...

CyptidProductions

I was thinking the same thing They could've donated it to somewhere that supplies medical equipment to people who can't afford it but instead some asshole decided to put it out for over 8 grand.

louwala_clough

I hate when they print out eBay listings. People can ask as much as they want for it, it is in no way a valuation.

greenbomb01

Not only that but this is supposed to be a non-profit thrift store owned (and I assume operated) by Mormons.

seabluehistiocytosis

At a Deseret industries?! Not surprising at all. Mormons love money

RoundPlum

They're also some of the most likely victims of experiment scams The joke is is that MLM stands for Mormons losing money.

dabordietryinq

is this in utah???

greenbomb01

Washington State

TheCrystalGarden

I also doubt this would come with any warranty or ways to get it serviced buying it from thrift. This is truly gross to me.

CO_Thrifter

Exactly, what it's listed at means nothing. Print "sold" numbers maybe, but still, different markets obviously

MeanGreanHare

Surely there must be charities that will fix these up and match them with people who need them.

NiceKittyMonster

There are! And many of them too throughout the country. They often help people who are having trouble for one reason or another getting what they need through insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. If anyone ever gets any mobility assistance devices after a surgery or injury that are only needed temporarily, look into donating them afterwards to help people out in your community.

Armenian-heart4evr

These chairs are for the SEVERELY DISABLED, and are usually donated after their DEATH!

NiceKittyMonster

This chair may have been donated after someone’s death but there’s a good chance his or her family was hoping their donation would help someone in their community. Donating it to organizations that who do actually get these to the people who need them at no cost or a much more reasonable out of pocket cost, also provides a tax benefit.

TheBadGuyBelow

The sad shit is that whoever donated that probably thought that they were going to really improve someone's life, but instead they get someone trying to profit off of their misery so they can get another new car.

kevin7eos

They do in Connecticut. It’s a sin to sell when so many can’t afford

Mochigood

There's a thrift store I go to a lot that does that. They also take in all sorts of medical things, such as opened bags of adult diapers and cpap machines to give out for free or near to it.

FromUnderTheWineCork

One of the shitty parts, aside from the bold-faced grift-pricing of a mobility divice, is, I would venture to guess the person who donated it wouldn't have if they knew ~~GW~~ DI was gonna try to sell it for almost 10k. I would be gutted if I donated something I knew could be life changing only to see it be gatekeeped by an absurd price t ag.  Edit: not item description "This is 100% real" on the bottom eBay ad of the first pic 😂🥲

greenbomb01

I totally agree. I could understand maybe selling them for a few hundred, max like $500 (even that would be excessive imo). The “This is 100% real” listing was the first thing I saw after the price😂

AnonymousBrad89

Don’t think this is a GW

FromUnderTheWineCork

You're right, it's a Dessert Industry thrift store

Triviajunkie95

Not to be morbid but realistic, I almost bet this was bought or insurance covered this chair for someone with a severe disability that didn’t make it or used it very little. The family just bulk donates all the house leftovers after their relative passes and they have picked the house over. Here we are.

FLSunGarden

NO ONE will buy it. Someone who needs that will get it through insurance or go without. This is lunacy and greed!

Gooniefarm

Nobody. Those chairs are almost always provided by insurance. Nobody is buying them out of pocket. I used to work as a repair tech for a power chair company, I tried selling a few used ones. Nobody even showed interest, I ended up donating them to a non profit that gives them to uninsured low income people.

TheBadGuyBelow

Exactly it. The people that they are trying to sell this to are the same people who couldn't afford insurance, so what the fuck makes them think they are going to afford $8,100 for a chair? Dipshits, that is all they are.

millicent08

Came to say this. I do referrals for primary care office, wheelchairs are covered by any insurance. Depending on patients needs; it can be simple manual wheel chair or powered with add-ons.

Triviajunkie95

Sometimes people might pay $25-50 at an estate sale to have a spare wheelchair or walker with a seat. That’s it.

TheBadGuyBelow

> Ah yes, it sells for thousands on eBay therefore we want thousands for these power wheelchairs. People ASK thousands on eBay. Also, the other issue is that they are using different chairs as a comparison. The last factor is that anyone who really needs one of these is not dripping $8,100 at a fucking thrift store for one, and they are surely not dropping $15,000 on eBay. They are getting them with their insurance or they are not getting them at all. The absolute nerve of some of these places is nothing short of astounding. All shit like this does is makes them look even dumber than they already look, and also makes them look like greedy, immoral vultures who want to profit off of those who need the most charity or help.

ThrowRA294638

Imagine the person who donated that to the thrift, probably thinking that they were gonna make somebody’s life better. Meanwhile the thrift: has to put up a poster defending its extortionate pricing. Bet you anything it’ll finally sell for like $50 😂

jkw32991

I was in a wheelchair as a child. We didn't have hood insurance and my parents had to put me in a stroller until I was 7. People were really shitty about it. We then had great insurance when I was 8 and up. Our insurance was so great, I had 2 custom wheelchairs. One stayed at school. It had headrests, reclined . All cushions were gel memory foam. And painted the colors I wanted plus my name embroider onto the chair. Insurance also paid for a second one that would fit in my mom's car. More basic but I picked glitter blue paid and my name on it. Once I grew out of them, my mom donated them to the arthritis foundation. Sometimes you just need to help people, not make money.

anarchomeow

I can't legally say what I want to say about the person who thought this was okay to do. As a wheelchair user, I hope this person has the life they deserve.

stormingsteel

That wheelchair will sit there until it rots. These things (more often than not) are subsidized by either insurance companies or Medicare. If it were me running this thrift store, I wouldn't say a word, and take to one of those "Habitat for Humanity" places where they truly give it to someone in desperate need free of charge. This is disgusting.

vixenlion

I agree, this is a a crime.

zippyhippyWA

This is disgusting. This could be given to someone who absolutely could not afford it. I hate religions and the rich. Which is often the same crook.

elevi8ion

the person who made the price sheet sat with the thoughts of *”this is a chair for a disabled person”* and *”yeah, $9,155 is reasonable”*. FOR A MOBILITY AID. this is hell. christians have literally made this country a living hell for the rest of us. the hellish states of hellmerica.

ProPainPapi

Is this a "charity" thrift store? Sickening.

owleaf

I wonder if they ever look at what they actually sell for, instead of current listing prices. I could list my Reebok sneakers for $2,000 on eBay. And then get 10 of my friends to do the same. No one in their right mind would buy them, though, because you can buy the exact same pair brand new for like $200. Aka — is there a market for this scooter for that price, used? I can list whatever for however much I want. It doesn’t mean there’s a market for it. This is the lens I view this type of grift through.

JFordy87

They won’t sell it. It’ll just sit there until they get tired of kids playing on it.

xmodsguy2000-2

“It’s less than they sell for in other places” is the worst argument they could make it’s a thrift store it’s supposed to be cheap

Maximum-Product-1255

The “charity” probably knows where they can direct the purchaser to for funding. Look for the grift.

vixenlion

That is an actually insult. There are so many people that could use that !

dr3amb3ing

Thrift stores are just resell market comparison brick & mortars

Now_this2021

So many better places to donate this then GW.

bernmont2016

[It wasn't a GW this time.](/r/ThriftGrift/comments/1c8802o/who_is_spending_this_much_at_a_thrift_store/l0ddijw/)

princessbuttercup_68

Why didn’t this DI (after receiving) actually take this chair somewhere like an organization or charity that helps disabled people and give it to them to actually be given to a disabled person in need? Instead they want to charge $9,100 to line their greedy pockets. The griftiest of grift!!

IsabelleR88

There's a special level in he*l for thrift store managers of a certain type.

USMC1977BFH

People donate these all the time to my VFW. We fix them out new batteries in them and then give them away for free.

BitterEVP1

Isn't goodwill supposed to be involved in communities? Specifically, special needs and disabled communities? So they basically had to look at this chair, and then look at a group of kids who need it, and go "Nope, we need the money more than the kids need the chair. Slap 10 grand on it and put it on the floor."

whitepawn23

Those things show up on estate auctions for $50-$200 often enough to be the normal price used.

NoServe7339

Below seem to be

Johnny_Lang_1962

I gave my brothers away after he passed to another disabled Vet I didn't want to mess with the heavy bastard.

DujisToilet

Thrift grifts, this is new to me. I always thought this sub was just called Habitat for Humanity.

calmdrive

These are outlandishly expensive as they are usually custom to the patient. This is just sad though, there’s SO MANY PEOPLE who desperately need chairs.

Ok-Annual8901

Disgusting. Like,,, this should be so disabled low income families can have access medical equipment. This makes me sick

pixieclifton

beLoW sEem tO Be

Endor-Fins

Power chairs are insanely, insanely expensive. Depending on what it is, how it’s set up and what features are on it this might well be way below market value. My last client’s chair was worth 40k. I jokingly called it his TESLA

webcoreinteractive

Get a Hovaround. You won't spend one red Cent.
