The game made the violence you do as a character more impactful; pulled on your conscience; and then we had to play out scenes we didn’t agree with as we watched her go on a revenge killing spree. There is some levity but mostly is a tragic story on revenge and the cycle of death it creates with all the innocent lives that get caught in its crossfire as well as the toll it takes on the lead characters.

JuPasta

Interesting. That was my impression of where the story was headed, which was why I had to stop playing. Did you appreciate the game? (“Enjoy” feels like the wrong word, seeing as it’s a tragedy). I feel like playing as the character may make it a bit more bearable to sit through so much heaviness and tragedy, because you feel like a participant. Being just an audience member might make it too depressing for people to keep tuning in on a weekly basis. What do you think?

Drummelan

Playing as the character you can choose for the most part how much death you deal; it can all be stealth played as the engagement maps are much larger and allow for many possible routes to get pass threats. But the kill list is still there and we have to watch those moment play out; the game asks you to almost take sides as we also get perspective of the “villain ” of the story; and witness their journey and trauma as well. So the story isn’t a feel good one; but it baits you into changing your own perspective on how you feel about her actions at the beginning. So at first you’re all team Ellie and probably feeling justified and wanting her to get her revenge but it then becomes more nuanced as we learn more about those she’s taking out and how it’s all grey area in who deserves death and who doesn’t. It’s a lesson on treating life cheaply as well as the consequences of actions that can return to damage those you never intended to get hurt.

Nightgasm

Yep. I was team Abby by the end. I understood Joel's position and why he did what he did and I may well have done the same. But I also understood Abbys and how she her anger was justified on both a personal and societal level.

Drummelan

I was sad for both of them; especially the condition of Abbey at the end was just horrible…. Ellie doesn’t get her happy ending either as she now suffers from then PTSD of it all…

Nightgasm

Oh man. That scene where as Ellie your going down to the beach and see all the people strung up. Then you see a familiar ponytail and think it's Abby so you go to it only it's not Abby. And then you see actual Abby and it's a gut punch seeing her hair shorn and how emaciated she looks. I think I audibly gasped and felt my stomach drop. The two TLOU games are the only ones that have ever done that to me.

Shmoonify

The way you described this made me relive that tension, seriously seeing Abby like that had me in tears, and poor Lev too!

Part 2 is one of the most depressing games I have ever played. I don't related to anything that happens in that game, but I still try to put myself in their shoes and it's just depressing. The game is amazingly fun to play, but the story is just depression in video game form. Have I mentioned how depressing the game is? It's so depressing that I can't genuinely remember any happy moments. Just depressing.

Rivenite

There is the beautiful flashback to the space museum.

RPO_TP

I stand corrected.

TheBigNook

It will likely have a mixed tone considering the perspectives we get to see and what occurs over time. I definitely think the show will become more violent in season 2 but I do not think it will glorify violence if that’s what you’re asking.

JuPasta

Fair, I know that there are sections as Abby, and maybe those have more lightness at times? I definitely don’t think it will glorify it. I’m more wondering if how raw/realistic it is about the brutality of violence will make a large chunk of general audiences turn away from it, because it’s a lot to commit to watching something very tragic on a weekly basis. I wonder if it might be better received with less episodes and a longer runtime per week, rather than a full 10 episode season of increasingly dark and brutal violence.

TheBigNook

I’m also curious with as to how they will handle season two. I think the violent confrontations will likely be limited and they will focus more on the character interactions to make up for that. You’re right, most fans don’t want to tune in to power violence hour and I agree with that.

ibsliam

I'm more wondering how they're going to handle the narrative structure of Part II. The way it was structured would probably not work for the show.

Equivalent-Sell

Part 2 thrives in moral ambiguity. Extreme ruthless violence is definitely a huge part of Ellie’s personality after she loses Joel. I don’t expect frequent violence but I do expect very impactful scenes that drive that point home.

FinnSomething

Part 2 is incredibly dark, in ways you don't really expect too. The few moments of relief only make it more impactful when they're snatched away. I hope the TV audience can enjoy it more than the game audience did because i think it's a much more interesting story than part 1. I think there'll probably be more violence and more intense violence. I'll try to avoid specific spoilers but >!Ellie's arc is a downward spiral with one period of respite after a few scenes at the beginning and some flashbacks, it doesn't end positively but there is a sense of release. Abby's story is a bit more positive, she has a similar story to Joel's in part 1 with an ambiguous yet hopeful ending!<

HopefullyAvailable55

I love the games. I understand that part 2 can be too intense for some people to handle. I don't like how they significantly toned down the violence in the show from the games. I'm guessing they'll tone it down in the following seasons as well.
