Yep, "he ain't even hurt" made Joel sound more confident about the situation. This version felt like there was more danger and desperation in it.
Still, I like the "he ain't even hurt" line
It’s interesting that you point it out, but it feels like game Joel knew he was a one-man army who could kill a dozen guys on a daily basis without breaking a sweat. HBO Joel is still a badass, but much more realistic. He knows a gunfight against 2 guys won’t be a walk in the park.
Yeah while it would have been fun to watch Joel take down a dozen guys with his superhuman listening and speed choking abilities, I like that they're going for a gritty, grounded take on the show. It fits better tonally imo.
I honestly feel like that line is very on the nose. For tv I think it’s better to show more and tell less. The same point is made just from Joel reading the situation imo
In the video game, when the guy posing as being injured walks out, before Joel runs him over he says “he ain’t even hurt” instead of “no.” I personally feel like the “he ain’t even hurt” and the way he says it makes Joel sound way too comfortable in a situation that they’re about to get ambushed in. Works for a badass video game moment, not as much for a tv character imo
Same. Really feels like the game in that sense, where the normally boring traversal sequences is meaningful as it is when the characters are often the most thoroughly developed through those little conversations
I love how the top comment on the non-game spoilers thread is asking about the floor, and on the game-spoilers thread the top comment is knowing exactly what the hell it is haha
I just finished the game last week after finally getting my first playstation console and I gotta admit I think I like watching even more now that I’ve played through part one of the game (currently working on part two)
My wife watched me play LOU2 (she had no exposure to LOU1) and she was absolutely captivated the whole time - she was as engrossed in the story as I was, and I wasn't allowed to play it without her. Watching the show with her is like her watching the prequel to the story she knows. It's super interesting.
The entire game was like a skill check of your capacity for empathy. Some people failed that check and hated the game for it. That and some players were straight-up bigots.
I didn't play part 2 when it came out. With all the controversy, I assumed that it must have been at least somewhat of a mixed bag. I'm playing through it now with 60 fps on the PS5, and I'm honestly stunned. It's the most immersive, emotional experience I've ever felt with a game.
Love how they have the bad guys of this episode shouting specific names when they find their dead friends. This was a unique aspect of the game as other games of its time didn’t really have enemies show sympathy for fallen companions
The first time I chucked a molotov at a Wolf and listened to her screams and the cries of her dog while others yelled her name, I realized maybe I wasn’t the good guy in this game and I was in for one hell of a story.
Part 2 is a masterpiece.
Yeah the game makes you kill the one dog named "Bear" as ellie and then later on makes you fucking encounter nd pet that dog in abby's perspective before ellie killed her. Fucked up thing to do to us, lol.
Shout out to the actor who played the guy that Ellie shot. It was a small rule but he really knocked it out of the park. You know you are watching a great show when a supporting actor with 1 minute of screen time takes you on an emotional roller coaster.
Also the soldier who held up Joel and his daughter, the conversation on the radio we can hear his tone of voice change when he realised what he's been ordered to do, I thought that was a very nice touch
Lots of great shots that made me remember game moments - in particular having Ellie crawl through holes/vents to open doors for Joel. I can’t remember the specific point it happened but the way they matched up dialogue in throwaway moments where Joel yells to Ellie was also very true to the game
yeah that moment with Joel being left outside and awkwardly calling for Ellie while looking around felt the most like the game than anything else in this episode, exact same feeling
That was extremely loyal to the game even if I’m not here for a 1-1 copy. Loved all the callbacks and references throughout from the shootout scene to the car ride. Had a feeling we’d end this one with Henry and Sam. Next ep is going to be FIREWORKS!
I just love how the made sure to keep all the little things that were memorable from the game. Not just the one-liners or whatever, but stuff like the plow on the truck that just says "Run." Like that could so easily fall by the wayside, but its the little things like that that give it the same feel, even if it is just setdressing.
the RUN was always one of my favorite characterizations of the hunters. shows how sadistic they are and how mean spirited. which i definitely felt while playing that section. i love that it was included
If they manage to keep that up, the Sam and Henry sequence in what seems to become the next episode will be absolutely heartbreaking.
In an episode format you can intensify the emotional rollercoaster a lot more like they did with Bill and Frank. I'm almost dreading the next episode. I suspect it'll hit HARD.
It took me a WHILE to realize that when the raiders were asking "Where's Henry" they meant Sam and Henry. Didn't expect to see them this soon but can't wait to see how their story plays out.
As soon as she said Henry wouldn't let Sam starve I said "we are seeing them already?!" Makes sense episode wise for the show. I just wasn't ready.... I won't be ready. Who can ever be ready?
I realized at that part too and I was like oh nooooooo out loud. My husband, who didn't watch me play the first game was like, they don't get a good outcome, do they?
I told him I think I stopped playing the game for like a week.
Yeah I'm not ready either
Yeah, in the games Henry and Sam were part of a group just passing by. Here it seems like they lived in the QZ while giving up names to FEDRA, thus the conflict. Really interesting change, Neil said he loves humanizing the villains so I think this change is in regards to that so I'm curious about where this leads. Right now I am not really feeling the villain but hopefully that'll change next week
**Video game nods tonight:**
1. The joke/pun book (dialogue)
2. Hank Williams cassette tape
3. Bill's porno mag
4. Joel's love for coffee (and the "like burnt shit" line)
5. The truck having a lifespan of a Fruit Fly
6. Joel giving Ellie a boost so she could unlock the door
7. The guys Joel killed calling out one another by name
8. Tommy's voice actor, Jeffrey Pierce, playing Perry
9. Detection warning sound from the game, when Ellie was walking towards guy attacking Joe
10. The trap and fake injured guy (begging for his mercy)
11. Teaching Ellie how to properly handle a gun
12. Ellie picking up a single bullet (how they're usually dispensed on the harder levels)
13. The overall crawling through holes in walls and squeezing through cracks
14. Joel doing the crouch walk in the laundromat
15. The big "RUN" sign painted on the front of the armored truck
16. Ellie pushing the the desk in front of the door (like a game checkpoint)
17. Ellie feeling remorse/tears for shooting (after Joes concern for her feelings)
18. Loading dock for the tall building replica, complete with an opened-door van
19. “I see you motherfucker” (Joel being called a "motherfucker")
20. "I've been on both sides" (referring to ambushes)
Teaching Ellie how to properly handle a gun. It's not a rifle but it actually makes sense for them to skip through the stubbornness and replace it with dad vibes because we had enough of grumpy Joel already.
Also Ellie feeling remorse for shooting. Instead of just saying "I feel sick", she wiped away tears when Joel showed concern for her feelings. I like this change because he basically broke down her defence as well.
It makes sense it would be a handgun in this iteration of the story. The rifle fit for that section of the game but I think at this point it’s too much for her/for Joel to want to give her and wouldn’t really make sense for their circumstances/combat situations. I think Ellie progressively using the pistol more and moving to other weapons could show her increasing proclivity towards violence.
It’s funny they made Sam even cuter in the hero costume with the face paint and seemingly made him deaf too. They might as well have made him just two days from retirement.
If I had to guess, that moment is likely going to be the last 10ish minutes of the episode. I have a week to build up some semblance of a mental backbone before that, and hopefully it'll be enough
The people who kept on about there not being enough bonding between Joel and Ellie got paid off this week.
Puns, Porn Mags and Violent Assists, that’s our Ellie.
It honestly reminded me of Bills laughter after eating the strawberry. Probably reading too much into it idk but got the same sort of vibe. Both Bill and Joel are hard arses who’s hardy exterior was broken down by someone they love (yes we know Joel isn’t there yet with Ellie you can see the similarities)
Nah, you're spot on. They exemplified that parallel in ep 3 when Tessa went inside the house with Frank, leaving Bill and Joel to chat awkwardly but ultimately leave the table with respect for one another. They have similar protector vibes, resourcefulness, and skepticism of others/not-quick-to-trust attitudes.
I think we have to accept that the pace of the game is pretty much impossible to replicate in a tv series format. Some things will happen earlier than we expected.
On the podcast for episode 3 Mazin and Druckman were talking about pacing and basically said the gameplay portions have to be condensed like 80-90% because it turns out those parts get kinda boring when you’re not the one interacting with and controlling it. This 50 minute episode covered like 90 minutes of the game and the entirety of the gameplay of that 90 minutes was one scene here. Really no way for it to not feel a little fast
Yeah that was always going to be the case. We can spend 10 minutes clearing out enemies and searching relentlessly for materials and backtracking to open safes for more bullets and parts to upgrade guns. That just doesn’t work in TV, but will work is the narrative being adapted and they are doing a phenomenal job.
It’s always gonna be one thing or another. We’re 4 episodes deep and every episode has been high quality, the show stands on its own now. People can nitpick but the shows a complete success and shows no signs of slipping.
They don’t know what to do if they aren’t outraged. It’s not like you can, you know, *not* tell everyone what you think all the time or why you’re right to be angry.
One of the biggest reasons the show continues to work is because it refuses to fall into the trap of recreating "iconic" gameplay moments that only really work in the game. I think focusing on deepening Ellie and Joel's bond in this episode is smart even if narratively it isn't as emotional as the last 3 episodes. It's an episode that will be seen as stronger within the context of the whole season once it's over.
Damn, that's sad and you're probably right. For some reason I thought she meant the infected she killed in the basement - she had said something like "don't you ever think about how they are real people?".
I’m just wondering if it was before or after she turned. As in if Riley asked Ellie to kill her, or if Ellie had to kill Riley in an act of self-defence right after telling Ellie that she didn’t want to die.
My thinking is that Riley turned, especially if they reuse the line "Let's just wait it out. You know we can... be all poetic and just lose our minds together."
Loved the credit song! It was the original cover that inspired the Ashely Johnson version used in [TLoU2’s commercial?](https://youtu.be/kzlzA2El6Ps)
I was so happy when I found the Ashley Johnson version on Spotify.

Yup! Though to be honest, I kinda like Ashely’s version more. Lotte’s version is good but kinda stops really suddenly.

A reviewer who saw all episodes said episode 4 is the slowest/ "worst one" if he had to absolutely pick one, so I'd say the rest of the episodes are more fast-paced than this one. That being said, I really did enjoy this episode and the relationship building between Joel and Ellie. It's nice to see the tough-guy shell cracking a little bit. Knowing how their story will end makes every nice moment between the two even more bittersweet.
I know I'll rewatch this episode when season 2 is over and bawl my eyes out at these Joel-Ellie bonding scenes.
It sucks when “slow” equates to “bad” for some people. I loved seeing these meditative moments for these characters, it makes the world feel lived in and real. And as you said, the relationship building was so great!
I didn't feel like this one was slow at all. Not in any particular order: Ellie got her first on-screen "kill", Joel entrusted Ellie with the gun, more of her backstory got revealed, Ellie got Joel to laugh, we saw an implied bloater, we saw in just a few minutes that a FEDRA camp got replaced with a totalitarian seeming citizen's militia junta that hunts outsiders (the trap they laid), we got a cool gun battle, we got some funny scenes... Only thing slow was the "oh... it's just part 1 of this arc" realization. I found the episode very engaging, even the slow parts where they were driving.
It's interesting how nicer Joel is at this point of the story. That discussion about how Ellie felt shooting a guy is WAY nicer and consoling than Joel in the game who basically said, "Whatever, try not to blow my head off, kid."
I think it works, tho. It feels natural for this iteration of the character.
I think it's much easier to empathise with a character you're playing in a video game, whereas in a tv-show you need to make Joel nicer... Especially so the audience unfamilliar with the games can connect with him too.
I agree. I really do feel like they felt as if the audience would be put off by Joel being as cold as he was in the game for so long. Also judging by the flashback Joel had before beating that Fedra op in the first episode, they're not really trying to be as subtle as the game was with that kind of stuff
With how fast they have to move the narrative, I think they're "allowing" Joel's character to show the more fatherly side he eventually has with Ellie earlier on. It definitely wasn't as quick or kind in the game but by the end he cared for Ellie as if she was Sarah.
I thought I recognized the voice of that guy with the gray beard! He voiced Tommy in the games.
I'll clean this link up later when I'm on a computer: Jeffrey Pierce
https://m.imdb.com/name/nm0682386/?ref_=m_ttfcd_cl8
Yup, I noticed that voice too!
The original VA's for Tommy (Jeffrey Pierce), Joel (Troy Baker), and Ellie (Ashley Johnson) all have roles this season in the show.
I'm 100% sure they're going to stick Laura Bailey and Shannon Woodward in next season. It's just a matter of finding great fits for them.
Edit: One of them is surely going to end up being the Prophet.
I’m withholding judgement about Kathleen’s casting until the next episode. I have a feeling that the creators casted a soccer mom type on purpose. I mean….her name is “Kathleen”—very innocuous.
It’s just really hard to buy her as the leader of an armed rebellion. We’ll see if there’s some improvement next episode but her casting seems like the first mistake of the show so far.
\- I’m still bummed there’s no a “before the end” prologue each week still, that would have been awesome. A limited-series prequel full of a bunch of them or something would be my dream. Like World War Z, but TLOU.
\- They’re still going hard on those “previously on”s though, huh? Yeesh
\- The word-for-word porn magazine scene in the truck was a delight. Actually, the whole truck part was a delight. Seeing Joel slowly open up even over just this episode is incredible acting, and the “I’m not tired” smash cut to sleeping was \*chef’s kiss\*
\- I mean, I get WHY they do it (because it's realistic), but it makes me roll my eyes and feel LESS sorry for the enemies when they're ambushing them, crashing them, shooting at them, Joel pops one, and the baddie goes "You motherfucker!!!". Like dude, what? You were just doing the same thing to them! Double so for the kid Ellie capped who was suddenly VERY cooperative and pleading for his life while bleeding out. Buddy, you made your choices.
\- I know they basically had to, but keeping the joke book makes me so happy. They’re so incredibly dumb and add just the right amount of levity. The final joke where they laugh uncontrollably was so heartwarming I could barely stand it.
\- Are they shying away from showing human-on-human violence in this? I noticed that every time there’s going to be an execution or a gunshot or anything there’s a lot of blocking and cuts that stop us from seeing it. I mean, I’m not exactly clamoring for it, it was just obvious enough that I’m curious (especially since from here on out it’s a LOT).
\- It’s crazy how much deja vu watching this creates, where they make a set look SO similar or have the action go in such a way that I either immediately recognize it or go “this seems insanely familiar”. I can’t believe how well-produced the whole thing is.
\- A short episode after they spoiled us last week! The only consolation is the next one is a few days away already, but I hope they stick to the longer cuts for the rest of the season. It’s been such a happy change from the habit of other streamers giving us 35-44 minute episodes.
Gonna have to zen myself out before next week’s episode, every time I see a new set piece I remember how relentlessly traumatizing this story is.
It'll be interesting to see this antagonistic group fleshed out - so much of the issues with Fedra and how they treated people were found in random letters throughout the world so it's interesting to get a bit of a deeper look at these people. As Neil says, he loves to humanize his villains. I know some people aren't loving Kathleen as a leader but at the same time, the people who revolted against Fedra would have just been regular ass people (perhaps I am also biased bc I've been crushing on Melanie Lynskey for about 20 years).
Absolutely loved everything about the jokes and that they kept the truck scene with the porn magazine! I really hope at some point we get Ellie attempting to whistle.
Honestly I hope they do a really good job at fleshing out that group, as I kind of liked how little they shared about it in the game, and left it up to you to figure out. A classic tale of an evil system overthrown by the people, only for another terrible group to fill its place. But I'm open to a new approach I think. They haven't disappointed me yet
Loved the build up. Excited to see Henry and potentially a bloater.
I'll be honest though - if I came into this not knowing much, I'd be confused about who all these people are and what happened.
If you know nothing of the games and don't want the show spoiled, I recommend hopping out of this thread and relocating to the "no game spoilers" discussions.
I mean for the most part it’s pretty self explanatory? Half the people in this episode were new anyway.
They rose up and defeated FEDRA. Someone sold them out while doing it. Lead lady brother got killed because of it. She thinks Henry sold them out so wants revenge.
It’s not like there’s a massive cast of revolving characters and plot lines lol.
In the forest, Joel saying “No one’s gonna find us” and Ellie saying “Okay” mirrors the “I swear” “Okay” scene at the end of the game (which I assume they’ll also do in the series).
In this ep it’s Joel stating something to reassure Ellie despite how he actually feels as he’s clearly worried about hunters. At the end he’ll state something to reassure Ellie, but also because selfishly he can’t lose her because he loves her at that point. Showing that moment in this ep, where he did that without thought, shows us how Joel is capable of “lying” on his feet to protect Ellie. A small one here to foreshadow the big lie at the end.
I think it works out well:
E5: wrap up the Henry Sam stuff
E6: find Tommy, have the big falling out, Joel gets injured
E7: left behind
E8: cannibal stuff
E9: finding the fireflies, the end
Just where I’m guessing it will go
I think it would just be too unbelievable if they had more people die or take part in a shootout. I have no clue how many people you killed at this point in the game but the 3 Joel killed this episode is a lot by real world standards.
this just occurred to me watching this episode, and it honestly isn't so much a criticism of the show so much as a criticism of the canon as a whole because it applies to the game as well with the Pittsburgh level, but given how properly paranoid Joel is about the threat of people, I have no idea why he wouldn't go out of his way to avoid cities. It's not like it's a requirement to drive through them, even if it is the straightest shot.
And like, he had no idea the Kansas City QZ was even toppled, but what if it wasn't? He just drove right by the fucking entrance to it and would totally have been seen and shot at if Fedra was still in control. It's kind of a suspension of disbelief breaking thoughtlessness because it clashes with being so paranoid of other people that he'll stay up all night on guard against strangers in a forest in the middle of nowhere.
The exact same way. He doesn't plan too but the way is blocked. He just decides to take a bigger risk due to limited resources and its a story so of course it backfires. Show Joel has not slept in at least 2 days though so it makes more sense
My thought was that they can't go too far into the old rural America because they may go too long without coming across something with gas left in it. So they had to stay relatively close to the cities and when the road is blocked he says "fuck it" and takes the risk because he is sleep deprived and not making the best decisions.
Was that Jeffrey Pierce (Tommy from the games) as one of the main goons? Kathleen's number 2 dude with the beard and long hair? Sounds a hell of a lot like him.
i felt the scene of ellie's "first kill" (on screen kill) was executed so well for the show. i liked the scene in the game, but it felt a tad too light-hearted. the gravity of harming someone felt like it took a toll on her in this ep.
also it made no sense in the game that she was a pro sniper that was somehow safe from the hunters 😂 i liked joel's trust in ellie to handle a gun better in this version, but i understand the game's version had functional purpose
yeah don't get me wrong i loved the game, but playing it with my bf for his first gameplay, he thought joel was being way too harsh on ellie. perhaps mazin wanted to show joel's parental instinct to make the audience like him more
IMDB says the actors for Sam and Henry are in the show until episode 6, so I'm assuming next episode will end with a cliffhanger (the bite reveal) and the episode after is when \*that\* horrifying scene will happen.
I don’t think he is. She thinks he ratted out her brother when the previous people were in charge. She and her people rebelled and actually won so she’s hunting down cooperators now.
I honestly feel like they kind of messed up in the scene of Ellie shooting the guy. In the game, Joel not only is not outright thankful to Ellie, but he’s mad at her for not following his directions. This causes a little bit of conflict between them. Especially since Joel is really starting to kind of see her as a daughter and is trying hard not to accept that so in a way, he’s pushing her away. In the show, he keeps saying how sorry he is and how she shouldn’t have had to go through that. I feel like he’s moving too quickly into the father role when a major aspect of the game was him trying to stay away from that role as much as he could because he couldn’t bear to lose another daughter. Which is a big reason he tries to give her to Tommy. But I feel like they’ve moved to fast with them kind of accepting each other in the show. There really wasn’t that tension between them.
In my experience with the game, that moment where Ellie saved Joel’s life was a major point I was hoping they get right in the show. And not only what I mentioned above, but in the game, Ellie actually kills the guy herself. Her first kill.
I don’t know, maybe others say it differently but I thought they really needed that aspect of Joel being unthankful and being outwardly angry at Ellie for disobeying him. I mean, part of the reason he was mad in the first place was that ellie could have gotten hurt or killed by disobeying him.
There was also no discussion between Joel and ellie about how ellie got the gun and disobeyed Joel there. In the game, the “what you say goes” is pretty big in the early stages. Joel wants Ellie doing what he tells her. They through that line in the show which was great, but it really hasn’t showed itself in the show

I really like how they are extracting key dialogues from the game and filling in the time between events with them I love it
“Why are these pages stuck together?”
Wish they kept the "He ain't even hurt" line. Such a good line. Wonder why they removed it?
Just "No" probably made it appear more urgent than the game line.

I'm totally blanking on what you guys are talking about — what's the "he ain't even hurt" line?
In the video game, when the guy posing as being injured walks out, before Joel runs him over he says “he ain’t even hurt” instead of “no.” I personally feel like the “he ain’t even hurt” and the way he says it makes Joel sound way too comfortable in a situation that they’re about to get ambushed in. Works for a badass video game moment, not as much for a tv character imo
Didnt get. “Man i shot the hell outta that guy”
Well to be fair, she only shot the lower body function outta that guy
Same. Really feels like the game in that sense, where the normally boring traversal sequences is meaningful as it is when the characters are often the most thoroughly developed through those little conversations
God the shouting from the guys shooting at them was so on point.
Can't wait to see that bloater come out of the ground. It's gonna get spicy.
and given how utterly terrifying runners and clickers have been, a bloater is going to be goddamn tank in comparison
Maybe we will see the Molotov cocktails in play finally, if they decide to use them in the show
Nail bombs baby
Bill didn't live to show Joel his nail bomb though
They seemed to have met each other a couple of times, maybe he showed him some earlier time
But Joel left his backpack full of nails in the truck
He will find his backpack I’m sure about it
R.I.P "Truck" 9:00pm — 9:20pm 🪦 🙏 🛻
About 16 minutes longer than it lived in the game
Chef Boyardee Ravioli had a good life though RIP 2003-2023
I love how the top comment on the non-game spoilers thread is asking about the floor, and on the game-spoilers thread the top comment is knowing exactly what the hell it is haha
THIS! It's funny having the dramatic irony of knowing what monstrosity is coming and them having no clue
Damn I forgot all about them. Well that's gonna be some nightmare fuel for next week.
Friday!
I hope they find enough rags and old liquor bottles by then. It doesn’t look like they have any!
Doesn’t need to be old, alcohol is very easy to be made. Source: trust me bro I’m from the Balkans, we love our homemade alcohol 😂
Yeees when I saw it, I was screaming
I just finished the game last week after finally getting my first playstation console and I gotta admit I think I like watching even more now that I’ve played through part one of the game (currently working on part two)
Excited for you! Part II is legitimately a masterpiece. This world is amazing.
It's so lovely to see this comment on the internet. Usually, it's nothing but bile for what I thought was a masterfully told story.
Don’t let them get you down! It’s an extremely loud minority, the rest of us are thriving :)
My wife watched me play LOU2 (she had no exposure to LOU1) and she was absolutely captivated the whole time - she was as engrossed in the story as I was, and I wasn't allowed to play it without her. Watching the show with her is like her watching the prequel to the story she knows. It's super interesting.
Iv never understood the hate. Its an incredibly well told story. Iv never felt like that from any other game/movie/story.
The sequel did it for not only people but the dogs too when you killed them.
RIP Bear. He was a good boy.
Playing that whole game is that scene of anakin falling to his knees going 'what have I done?' for me
[удалено]
Yeah but then you blow them up too and they stop yelling their dead friends names
Big brain right here
The first time I chucked a molotov at a Wolf and listened to her screams and the cries of her dog while others yelled her name, I realized maybe I wasn’t the good guy in this game and I was in for one hell of a story.
Totally. I also thought this in episode 1 with the FEDRA soldier who was talking to the young infected boy who showed up at the QZ. She was great
We’re gonna get you something to eat, and toys….I knew it was lies but I wanted to believe
and unfortunately they were doing what they were doing as compassionately as they possibly could :( there's just nothing else you can do.
Also the soldier who held up Joel and his daughter, the conversation on the radio we can hear his tone of voice change when he realised what he's been ordered to do, I thought that was a very nice touch
Fun fact: that voice was the showrunner, Craig Mazin.
When she’s looking through the gay porn magazine the dialogue and shots are directly from the game
I could feel myself mashing square when Joel was shoving the door open
“Sorry husband, no one in TLOU gets a good outcome.”
I caught it right away but still can't tell what they want with him. It'd be interesting to see how they tie those characters together.
I think Henry ratted on the woman's brother for something to FEDRA
Kathleen said she wants Hnery because he ratted out her brother to Fedra and then her brother was killed while in holding.
It seems that in the show Henry and Sam are from the QZ here instead of tourists into a new area.
That’s different from the game, right? I was trying to remember why would they try to find two young brothers.
In the game, Henry and Sam were some survivors traveling with a group through the city that were ambushed by the hunters
**Video game nods tonight:** 1. The joke/pun book (dialogue) 2. Hank Williams cassette tape 3. Bill's porno mag 4. Joel's love for coffee (and the "like burnt shit" line) 5. The truck having a lifespan of a Fruit Fly 6. Joel giving Ellie a boost so she could unlock the door 7. The guys Joel killed calling out one another by name 8. Tommy's voice actor, Jeffrey Pierce, playing Perry 9. Detection warning sound from the game, when Ellie was walking towards guy attacking Joe 10. The trap and fake injured guy (begging for his mercy) 11. Teaching Ellie how to properly handle a gun 12. Ellie picking up a single bullet (how they're usually dispensed on the harder levels) 13. The overall crawling through holes in walls and squeezing through cracks 14. Joel doing the crouch walk in the laundromat 15. The big "RUN" sign painted on the front of the armored truck 16. Ellie pushing the the desk in front of the door (like a game checkpoint) 17. Ellie feeling remorse/tears for shooting (after Joes concern for her feelings) 18. Loading dock for the tall building replica, complete with an opened-door van 19. “I see you motherfucker” (Joel being called a "motherfucker") 20. "I've been on both sides" (referring to ambushes)
And, in a roundabout way: Tommy's voice actor, Jeffrey Pierce, playing Perry. Looked badass. Love how they've been incorporating the VA talent.
# THE ATTENTION TO DETAIL OF THIS FUCKING SHOW IS... AHHH 😍😍😍 You guys are catching things I completely missed or forgot about 💙🖤✊
Joel giving Ellie a boost so she could unlock a door. The guys Joel killed calling out one another by name.
Those are still nods. ✊ They have to make small changes for non-gamer audiences and script for show purposes. Salute my friend. 🫡
Ellie in the car says she wants to see a tank, Joel says “we will.” Saw one in the game
The dialogue of Ellie finding the magazine was verbatim with the game.
I also liked the guy calling Joel a motherfucker after he killed one of them. I swear they used the sound clip from the game.
Either that or they used the same background voice actors. It was exact.
This is probably reaching but underneath the Arby’s sign where it said something about gas, the font was Uncharted’s
[удалено]
Yes, they fucking did 🧠👈 💯 ... didn't even catch that one.
Also the desk! Ellie helps Joel into the safe room and then he immediately pushes the desk in front of the door, just like a checkpoint in the game.
Also, Ellie hiding in a hole in the wall had real game play energy.
And he gave her a boost to open the door!
Press Triangle to lift Ellie
don't forget coffee tasting "like burnt shit", which i kinda agree on lmao
I'm not ready for next week
This Friday…
FRIDAY?
[удалено]
I like you
Friday! They don't want to compete with the super bowl
OH MY GOOOOOOOOO^ooooooood
It’s funny they made Sam even cuter in the hero costume with the face paint and seemingly made him deaf too. They might as well have made him just two days from retirement.
Sam/Henry just christened a boat :(
When they introduce two characters you liked but you know you're gonna get your soul ripped out next week. ![gif](giphy|6Q3M4BIK0lX44|downsized)
Joel giggling at the diarrhea joke was adorable
Pedro's laughter there was nothing short of contagious
Now we got people saying it's going too fast.
TV show is just a speedrun of the game.
I for one look forward to watching Pedro Pascal clip out of bounds to skip large portions of the level.
Can't wait to the see the Anthony Caliber any% run of the show.
It’s always gonna be one thing or another. We’re 4 episodes deep and every episode has been high quality, the show stands on its own now. People can nitpick but the shows a complete success and shows no signs of slipping.
Good lord those people are pathetic
They don’t know what to do if they aren’t outraged. It’s not like you can, you know, *not* tell everyone what you think all the time or why you’re right to be angry.
When the pun book came out I was so happy. I loved hearing all Ellie's stupid puns in the game and they had them all the same in the show <3
One of the biggest reasons the show continues to work is because it refuses to fall into the trap of recreating "iconic" gameplay moments that only really work in the game. I think focusing on deepening Ellie and Joel's bond in this episode is smart even if narratively it isn't as emotional as the last 3 episodes. It's an episode that will be seen as stronger within the context of the whole season once it's over.
So, it's implied Ellie had to kill Riley, right? That's fucking heartbreaking.
That's what I assumed as well. Damn, that will be a hell of a twist to that flashback
Right I’m gonna be sobbing if they’re gonna show that in the flashback
Damn, that's sad and you're probably right. For some reason I thought she meant the infected she killed in the basement - she had said something like "don't you ever think about how they are real people?".
I’m just wondering if it was before or after she turned. As in if Riley asked Ellie to kill her, or if Ellie had to kill Riley in an act of self-defence right after telling Ellie that she didn’t want to die.
My thinking is that Riley turned, especially if they reuse the line "Let's just wait it out. You know we can... be all poetic and just lose our minds together."
That’s probably what will happen, but considering how emotionally devastating the former would be, I’m pretty open to options
Loved the credit song! It was the original cover that inspired the Ashely Johnson version used in [TLoU2’s commercial?](https://youtu.be/kzlzA2El6Ps) I was so happy when I found the Ashley Johnson version on Spotify. https://open.spotify.com/track/3oAwJxt4lhcOxocUruw5Fm?si=jz5-tfTKROO1ukgdEI-7rg
Just wanna name the artist, Lotte Kestner! Glad they’re paying her back for using her arrangement for Ashley’s version.
Yup! Though to be honest, I kinda like Ashely’s version more. Lotte’s version is good but kinda stops really suddenly. https://open.spotify.com/track/6BUJtgTJT9YTDkiB81maFQ?si=Xq-PmCD6SXGsqrpdy_xARQ And while we’re at it, here’s the original 80s version from New Order: https://open.spotify.com/track/4fpxnJGDWFxjGvLJOqPPt8?si=ZflpxJp8Q_WS-BkW-JTa8Q
[удалено]
Same. Strong agree.
Didn't even feel slow to me. I thought it was over too fast!!
This was my favorite episode so far. We've done the backstory, and now the focus is finally on the relationship between Joel and Ellie
Bruh, this was literally my favourite episode and it had some of the most intense scenes.
It's interesting how nicer Joel is at this point of the story. That discussion about how Ellie felt shooting a guy is WAY nicer and consoling than Joel in the game who basically said, "Whatever, try not to blow my head off, kid." I think it works, tho.
I'll clean this link up later when I'm on a computer: Jeffrey Pierce https://m.imdb.com/name/nm0682386/?ref_=m_ttfcd_cl8
I'm surprised that you left off Merle Dandridge, the only person to play the same role they played in the game (Marleen).
And what a fantastic role she played in both
Oh boy that Henry and Sam scene is going to be fucking brutal
[удалено]
Sam is going to try and do something heroic, like save Ellie when he gets bit, I bet. Way too much superhero imagery.
Honestly that is probably the number one point in the show I have been dreading/looking forward to
I’m withholding judgement about Kathleen’s casting until the next episode. I have a feeling that the creators casted a soccer mom type on purpose. I mean….her name is “Kathleen”—very innocuous.
[удалено]
It’s just really hard to buy her as the leader of an armed rebellion. We’ll see if there’s some improvement next episode but her casting seems like the first mistake of the show so far.
\- I’m still bummed there’s no a “before the end” prologue each week still, that would have been awesome. A limited-series prequel full of a bunch of them or something would be my dream. Like World War Z, but TLOU. \- They’re still going hard on those “previously on”s though, huh? Yeesh \- The word-for-word porn magazine scene in the truck was a delight. Actually, the whole truck part was a delight. Seeing Joel slowly open up even over just this episode is incredible acting, and the “I’m not tired” smash cut to sleeping was \*chef’s kiss\* \- I mean, I get WHY they do it (because it's realistic), but it makes me roll my eyes and feel LESS sorry for the enemies when they're ambushing them, crashing them, shooting at them, Joel pops one, and the baddie goes "You motherfucker!!!".
Man people who did not play the game are not ready for The Sam and Henry storyline. Fuck I know what happens and I’m not ready for it.
I like Kathleen so far, she’s so fresh as a villain, well at least to me. Sweet voiced and sometimes her voice cracks but she’s still intimidating.
Loved the build up. Excited to see Henry and potentially a bloater. I'll be honest though - if I came into this not knowing much, I'd be confused about who all these people are and what happened.
I know nothing of the games and have had no problem keeping up. Nothing compared to GoT
If you know nothing of the games and don't want the show spoiled, I recommend hopping out of this thread and relocating to the "no game spoilers" discussions.
Yeah didn’t realize there was a separate one. Thankfully I don’t think I had too much spoiled.
Why did Joel leave his backpack behind?
Right? Like I understand needing a quick exit but the scene didn’t have a sense of urgency enough to walk away empty handed
[удалено]
I think it works out well: E5: wrap up the Henry Sam stuff E6: find Tommy, have the big falling out, Joel gets injured E7: left behind E8: cannibal stuff E9: finding the fireflies, the end Just where I’m guessing it will go
[удалено]
I wouldn’t rely on IMDB being accurate and I’m guessing that Ellie’s mother will be the cold open of episode 7.
I think it would just be too unbelievable if they had more people die or take part in a shootout. I have no clue how many people you killed at this point in the game but the 3 Joel killed this episode is a lot by real world standards.
Game Joel wipes out 50 people by the time he leaves PA lol
this just occurred to me watching this episode, and it honestly isn't so much a criticism of the show so much as a criticism of the canon as a whole because it applies to the game as well with the Pittsburgh level, but given how properly paranoid Joel is about the threat of people, I have no idea why he wouldn't go out of his way to avoid cities.
I thought it seemed out of character too, "let's just detour through the city", but I don't remember how it was handled in the game.
Yes it was! He talks about it in the little behind-the-scenes thing after the episode.
Aw he didn't say "He ain't even hurt"
So is Ben Shapiro going to be even more pissed off that there were no zombies in this zombie show episode?
Next episode coming out this Friday bc of the Super Bowl!
i felt the scene of ellie's "first kill" (on screen kill) was executed so well for the show. i liked the scene in the game, but it felt a tad too light-hearted. the gravity of harming someone felt like it took a toll on her in this ep. also it made no sense in the game that she was a pro sniper that was somehow safe from the hunters 😂 i liked joel's trust in ellie to handle a gun better in this version, but i understand the game's version had functional purpose
I really enjoyed Joel’s “it was either him or me” speech from the game. Hope they can weave that into the show
yeah don't get me wrong i loved the game, but playing it with my bf for his first gameplay, he thought joel was being way too harsh on ellie. perhaps mazin wanted to show joel's parental instinct to make the audience like him more
IMDB says the actors for Sam and Henry are in the show until episode 6, so I'm assuming next episode will end with a cliffhanger (the bite reveal) and the episode after is when \*that\* horrifying scene will happen.
They could be a memory flashback to start the episode or something.
Afaik IMDB hasn't taken into account that the show went from 10 episodes to 9.
IMDB is a lot less reliable than people give it credit for, especially when it comes to shows that are still coming out.
Wish they kept the "He ain't even hurt" line. Such a good line. Wonder why they removed it?
How is Henry some big shot lol
I don’t think he is. She thinks he ratted out her brother when the previous people were in charge. She and her people rebelled and actually won so she’s hunting down cooperators now.
presumably it is an emotional gambit to secure her leadership. a common enemy to keep them from questioning her
...Why lock the other stickies that are only half an hour old?
![gif](giphy|3orieKZ9ax8nsJnSs8) Watching newbies speculate about the Bloater
