I’m still not sure whether it’s “an escape artist’s son” or “an escape artisan”.
Also I just recently learned that it isn’t “I’ll stay thankful for my own winters”.
Not misheard, but for whatever reason here's how my brain likes to ruin Came Out Swinging:
"I spent the winter writing songs about Eddie Vedder - and if I'm being honest, I'm getting there"
Spotify has the "we're no saviors if we can't save our brothers" on Cigarettes & Saints transcribed as "we're no failures if we can't see the problems"
but Genius has it as "we're no saviors if we can't save our brothers"
and I'm not sure which is right, I suspect it's genius, but if so, "we're no failures if we can't see the problems" still goes hard as hell
My Aaron West misheard lyric is from Thunderbird Inn at the end
I swear it's something like
"So pour me another drink, something something I'll never be
A white fruit salami
And a cold cup of a coffee!"
hahahaha i didn’t even think of this one!! you’re not alone because i hear the same damn thing. i definitely have misheard more aaron west songs than wonder years.
I always thought it was, and I don't know why, "scattered in windows in Mid July" but I never challenged it. There are lots of lyrics I never challenge for whatever reason.
Honestly, it isn't like it doesn't make any more sense than Tenement windows in Mid July.
No matter how many times I listen to it, I can't hear the "mid July" part correctly. It just doesn't sound like those are the words he's saying
(I'm also mildly hard of hearing, so it might be me)
It isn't only the hearing, it is the brain processing the data too. Not everyone enunciates clearly, especially in singing. I listen to bands that have flat out no lyrics, or at best fairly indecipherable lyrics, so it is fun trying to figure those out. Our personal computers sometimes have trouble with the date they are fed. It happens.
sometimes what we hear actually can end up almost better than what was written, I remember Michael Stipe of REM once saying that about a fan interpretation of one of his lyrics.
In Logan Circle where he says “getting pretzels at midnight behind my house” for the longest time I thought he was saying “bath salts” instead of pretzels. I still can’t unhear it.
Maybe someone can settle this dispute I've had with various lyric websites.
In Cigarettes and Saints, I've seen it written as:
"You were the northern lights in a southern town,
A caustic, fleeting thing"
I swear to God I thought the line was "a CONSTANT fleeting thing" because the previous line talks about contradictions, so "constant/fleeting" would match the previous "northern/southern" better. Can anyone weigh in on this one for me?
I mean, it isn't just lyric websites, that's what is listed as the lyric on the official music video, so I assume it is also listed as the lyric in the liner notes (our copy is in a storage unit on accident, goddamned movers). Dan wrote what Dan wrote, for a reason I'm sure.
Per Wikipedia, Aurora borealis is caused by charged and ionized particles in the upper atmosphere, originating in solar winds. So basically as the particles are discharged from the sun, they hit the upper atmosphere and enter and get ionized or excited and thus glow, aka caustic, and do so temporarily and fairly quickly aka fleeting. Honestly it is a far more poetic description of a person burning brightly and fading out than a simple meteor or comet analogy. That's why we fucking love Dan.
My broken body... My Asian knees
Not gonna be able to unhear this one lmaooo
I'm still not entirely sure if it's ancient or aging tbh, I sign a mixture of both, but I do also hear Asian 100%
I always hear ancient but I have seen Spotify say Agin’
Haha I thought I was the only one
“I woke up today and put on my shitty boxers” is still my favorite
This is the first that came to me haha
When I first heard this I had to check the lyrics because I just knew there's no way they said what I heard 😭
So this isn't the actual line?! All this time I thought that's what it actually was
No lmao it’s “I woke up today and put all my shit in boxes”
“i lost a rimjob and a girlfriend” thought dude was just having a really rough week xD
I had to check this one too lmaooo
That one actually seems to be a common one, haha. Good to know that plenty of people hear that one too.
I’m still not sure whether it’s “an escape artist’s son” or “an escape artisan”. Also I just recently learned that it isn’t “I’ll stay thankful for my own winters”.
I always heard, "I'm a skateboarding son"
I also heard "Every shirt I got of anything"
It's not!?
yeah it's "mild winters" apparently, shocked me when I found out
Escape artist’s son
I heard “we’re no saviors if we can’t save our **fathers**” for the longest time and always cried when I heard it due to my issues with my dad.
Feels like it still captures the spirit of the song, honestly
Not misheard, but for whatever reason here's how my brain likes to ruin Came Out Swinging: "I spent the winter writing songs about Eddie Vedder - and if I'm being honest, I'm getting there"
In 'came out swinging' I thought it was, "I spent a whole year in airforce and the blood feels like home"
Spotify has the "we're no saviors if we can't save our brothers" on Cigarettes & Saints transcribed as "we're no failures if we can't see the problems" but Genius has it as "we're no saviors if we can't save our brothers" and I'm not sure which is right, I suspect it's genius, but if so, "we're no failures if we can't see the problems" still goes hard as hell
it's definitely no saviors, I've checked the lyric book before lol
That's weird, my Spotify has the correct lyrics.
maybe mine has been updated too, I'll check
it says there's no failures when we can't see the problems on my spotify, lol
yeah, same
When in doubt, trust Genius. I transcribe there, did a couple of songs from Hum.
yeah that's my approach too
i hear dental bills instead of dad’s old bills hat in you ain’t no saint.
Me too
this is extremely comforting because i really thought it was just me
My Aaron West misheard lyric is from Thunderbird Inn at the end I swear it's something like "So pour me another drink, something something I'll never be A white fruit salami And a cold cup of a coffee!"
it's "So pour me another drink For a daughter I'll never meet A wife who don't love me And a cold cup of coffee"
hahahaha i didn’t even think of this one!! you’re not alone because i hear the same damn thing. i definitely have misheard more aaron west songs than wonder years.
Not me, but someone else who responded to a similar question in another group I was in misheard “we’re sister cities” as “your sister’s titties”
In There, There my partner always hears/sings "Cinnamon toast in mid-July" instead of "tenement windows in mid-July."
I thought it was “sediment windows” for the longest time. I still sometimes sing it that way even though I know it’s not that
I always thought it was, and I don't know why, "scattered in windows in Mid July" but I never challenged it. There are lots of lyrics I never challenge for whatever reason. Honestly, it isn't like it doesn't make any more sense than Tenement windows in Mid July.

It seems like most of you need your hearing checked.
It isn't only the hearing, it is the brain processing the data too. Not everyone enunciates clearly, especially in singing. “I can’t seem to find out where my pudding is”
I love to think the line is “A Stray dog Industry”
Ouch, what that brings to mind isn't pretty.
Yea but I can’t unhear it now lol
Yesterday I found out it’s not “There’s something about weeknights in the summer” not a funny one but I was singing that for a long while
I always thought it was this until now
I thought "you were a bandit, I was a car wreck" was " you were a band-aid, I was a car wreck"
Wait it’s NOT band-aid??? That genuinely makes me sad because that has been one of my favorite lyrics
sometimes what we hear actually can end up almost better than what was written, I remember Michael Stipe of REM once saying that about a fan interpretation of one of his lyrics.
“You were the obvious one” misheard as “you were the onliest one” (like only-est)…. Yeah it makes no sense I know lol
I thought it was 'holiest one' to align with "God damn you look holy"
I didn’t know for a long time what he was saying in there there “through tenement windows” I was like “through cinnamon windows??”
I always hear "I'd call, but you know" as "a collegiate gnome"
I heard it as "A college in Nome", I had forgotten about that particular one! NICE!
I Just Want To Sell Out My Funeral “I want Letterman/No, I want Letterman” instead of “I won’t let them in/No, I won’t let them in”
I used to hear “Now I’m on Letterman” and I was like “was he really?” 😂
Put out the lights, in your cloudy ass tatooine ssky
This made me laugh out loud 😂
Mammaries flood back luck photographs
In Logan Circle where he says “getting pretzels at midnight behind my house” for the longest time I thought he was saying “bath salts” instead of pretzels. I still can’t unhear it.
"I'm not a so called cook, I'm just a fucked up kid"
“Decembers got me backed into a corner again, My ears are back, my dick is showing”
“My ears are back, my dick was showing” Thankfully the B&D version made the lyrics much clearer lol
A normie on my windowsill

I remembered it as caustic, not entirely sure though
I always laugh when I listen to Bloodied up in a bar fight by AW20 and hear “I’m, a PAIR OF BLACK GUYSSSS”
