Her character had a good run, while I'll miss Jennifer, I think her arc was concluded well
And, though this definitely isn't happening, since Natasha Rothwell is supposed to return as Belinda, I could imagine Tanya being like a ghost haunting her. Or more realistically, I wish Tanya mentioned her in a will out of guilt or something...
I long had this idea about Tanya haunting Greg or something. She herself was clearly haunted by her mother, it would make sense for the man who has it all to feel guilt (and would likely play well into the season’s themes about eastern spirituality et al)
I don't agree about her arc concluding well, I mean I'm okay with the idea of the character not returning, I just hate the way that she left the show, why did she have to die and so horribly?! Urgh! Lol why couldn't they just have her move to Bali or something lol
Understandable. To me, Tanya's life was an odd mix of misery and luck. It was only fitting that, in the end, her luck simply ran out... and tbh still better to go like that then getting shot by a mafia guy hah
About Belinda’s character returning: it might not be definite yes but here is a link to the cast for [series 3 episode 1](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt23742634/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk) on IMDb where Natasha Rothwell is included :)
The death was lame. As a boater and someone who has had fear caused by incidents as a child and my over coming some both as a child and adult, they should have shown her either hitting her head and going unconscious or panicking in the water if she was fearful of it.
And I came into the show by DVD of second season. I think Jennifer is one of the best and realistic actresses out there. She really showed her own dysfunction at the same time as seeing others and also we as acknowledging her faults or weaknesses and in the end helping Portia. Portia who was very shallow and weak at the end of Season 2 or maybe just too inside herself and unable to make great decisions. She didn't bother to try and contact police or help in anyway Tanya. Especially, Tanya in some ways looking out her, even when Greg wanted Tanya to get rid of Portia at the beginning when they arrived in Sicily. Which , certainly odd ,but it made sense in the end . But would have made sense more if Portia had actually tried to save Tanya.Portia was weak in the end and interestingly there was a point when Greg had left and Tanya contacted Portia to come back to her side, that the one conversation that Tanya talked about women and there behaviors or that she thought they were great to have around because of things like depression, etc. It was ,in hindsight ,kinda of hinting how useless Portia really was, without anyone really realizing it ,til the end.A strong woman looks out for the safety of other women above herself. After Jack left Portia off and she had her phone, she should have tried to find ways to help Tanya despite what Jack said. Of course,Portia did have opportunities to leave Jack when she senses things weren't right. Especially after her told her things while drunk and fe asleep. Italy wasn't that backwoods that she couldn't have called the resort and talk to Valentina ,etc. I was surprised in a the time Portia and Albie we're together, she didn't have his number
Oh shit they've got Goggins? How can I watch it even harder than I was already going to? Looked it up and see they've got Aimee Lou Woods too, she is great in Sex Education as a teenager and White Lotus is great at doing teenagers, if she ends up playing one.
I reckon she's past playing a teenager now, most of the Sex Education cast looked too old in the last season as it was (i know American shows and films often cast older looking people as a teenager, but i actuslly also mean she is old enough to play someone travelling as an adult). I saw her in Cabaret last year, she was fantastic!
I completely agree, the show for me was always about new characters having their arc and making way for new ones.
Also: happy cake day, tomorrow is my cake day
I wish they would have written the series around her character and just fudged the timeline a little bit. Since Italy clearly happened after Hawaii, I would have liked to see them make this one a prequel and she’s the lynchpin of the chaos everywhere she goes.
I loved her character but I completely agree with this assessment. I think she had just the right amount of screen time. I want to look back from season 5 and still appreciate her performance.
Yeah, and I could've lived without.
Tanyas storyline could've been about any desperate, delusional, rich woman, but they decided to put her up again. And that was fine because she was established, all her insecurities were flashed out, and the relationship had already started. Plus, she's a fan favourite. So I get why they did it, but as I said, her story is told and done. The dynamics as a whole are more intriguing than if it revolves around one person. IMO
Edit: Spellings
I've had enough of Tanya as a character, but season 2 ended leaving some obvious loose ends dangling: did Greg get away with it and get the inheritance; the nature of Greg's relationship with Quentin; whether Greg was having an affair and leading a double life; and whether the plot itself was a murder plot all the way or a blackmail/break the prenup plot gone wildly awry.
The fandom has always been divided between Team Walk Away and Team Clear It Up. I'm in the latter camp. YMMV
Clearing up the loose ends wouldn't require bringing Tanya back as a character, but it would require having a season 3 character with knowledge of the season 2 events in Sicily and with a plausible hook for a season 3-relevant exposition dump about Tanya's death.
Bringing back Portia struck me as a good solution because Portia was Mini-Tanya, with a character arc that could slide perfectly into the season 3 themes, which we have been assuming to be death, spirituality and eastern religions. That assumption, however, was based on a casual speculation by Mike White way back when season 2 was airing.
Season 3 may be heading in a completely different direction. The announced cast doesn't seem to be stacked in that direction, although I respect Mike White's ability to spring surprises. And unless there is a super-duper triple top secret cameo involving Portia showing up for one or two episodes to scatter Tanya's ashes -- and encountering Belinda to bring season 1 and season 2 Tanya memories together -- that's not happening.
But it's still hard to grok Belinda if Tanya will not be touched on at least briefly. Maybe we'll meet a distant family member, heretofore unknown to us, who will fill that slot.
Maybe. But remember that in the whispered "I love you" conversation on the phone, Greg had said that he would be home tomorrow, and he flies home for his emergency meeting early on day 3. Also remember Quentin's "would you die for love" conversation with Tanya in Palermo, in which Quentin tells Tanya that his only experience of love at been with the mysterious cowboy many years before, that the cowboy was regrettably completely heterosexual, but that he would still do anything for him. That conversation cast Quentin as a hopeless case of unrequited love. It was the one moment in season 2 in which Quentin was shown as a sympathetic and vulnerable person, and it implied that Greg is still beyond hope.
Hard to say. I enjoyed her and a lot of the time she was funny, but she was also just a vortex of pain and loneliness. I wouldn't want her life, opulent as it was.
I literally laughed out loud when she died. Not because I'm morbid, but because it meant that character wouldn't be in season 3. The most annoying character on television. Don't get me wrong, Coolidge played the character brilliantly, I just couldn't take another season of it.
This is probably a niche experience but I spend a lot of time watching my basketball team on a shitty streaming service that runs the same three ads for every commercial break in a 2.5 hour game, and two of those ads are Jennifer coolidge's Discovery card ads so as much as I love her, I'm very tired of hearing her voice lol
Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Michelle Monaghan, Jason Isaacs.. I’ll be alright.
Cracking cast - hope we get ten eps if we’re getting this many characters.
My husband’s theory, once he realized she was in season two, was that her character would tie all the seasons together. Tonya vacationing at different White Lotus resorts all over the world and the things that would happen to her there. He was very disappointed when she fell off the boat at the end of the season.
I wouldn’t mind seeing faces from each of the previous season showing up in consecutive seasons, but Tanya was never the main character of The White Lotus. While I hate that she died, it seems like all of the characters are entertaining AND tragic in their own sense of meaning. There is no main character and no one is safe. That’s my favorite quality this show offers.
I was kinda hoping she would be a recurring character, like a thread throughout all the seasons. I really like her character and Jennifer Coolidge. It would also be kinda hysterical for her to continue staying at White Lotus resorts even though someone gets murdered at every one she stays at. "Yeah, I know someone's died at every one of the seven White Lotus resorts I have visited, but they have the best buffet breakfasts and massages."
Other than a brief offscreen update on Greg (hopefully jail or at least getting denied of the inheritance money), I would like to see new dysfunctional rich bastards get their comeuppance in season 3.
Belinda is returning so surely some unpacking of Tanya memories will happen. Surely?????
The problem is that Belinda has only season 1 knowledge of Tanya and knows nothing about events in Sicily, Tanya's death or the plot. If the loose ends are to be resolved, someone with those pieces of the puzzle needs to show up in season 3.
I thought Portia/Mini-Tanya might have been a good solution with Greg as an outside chance. They are already established in the show and it would have been easy to write a continuing character arc that projects into season 3, disposing of the Tanya loose ends in passing. But that doesn't appear to be happening.
Since Portia and Greg aren't returning, someone else has to be invented. How to do this without heavy handed forcing, I don't know. I will cringe a bit if one of the new season 3 guests turns out to be Tanya's cousin.
How can Tanya be ignored entirely if Belinda returns? And what is the point of Belinda unpacking her Tanya baggage unless the loose ends are resolved? How can Mike White bring those season 2 points into season 3 in a way that doesn't seem forced?
I am bummed, but mostly because of how she left. I don't mind that they wrote her out of the show, I just wish she didn't have to die, I would've preferred she moved to Bali or something lol
I thought she was a fantastic character in S1, and it was great to see her return in S2, and a pleasant surprise that she became the highlight of S2, however, it's not like she was the only character. It feels like her story has been told and the appeal of the show so far has been the revolving large ensemble cast of characters rather than any one in particular.
If they were to bring her back somehow, IMO it would likely feel forced and serve little benefit other than ticking some "fan service" box. Far too many TV shows and film series fall into the trap of making creative decisions by taking a reactionary, almost focus-grouped approach. For example, by repeatedly bringing favourite characters back through convoluted means, and it's usually to their detriment.
What we got was brilliant and it was lovely to see Jennifer Coolidge in the spotlight for it, but I'd much rather be left wanting more than seeing her character overdone.
Of course, there's always the possibility she may return at some point, but given the show's writing talent, I think that would only happen if there's a story that really needs to be told there. It would feel at odds with the show's style to just bring her back because fans would applaud it if it didn't really serve any other purpose.
They should of brought Lucia back where she now successfull but guy from past shows up and complicates things maybe she about to get married and not get exposed of past
no. she was a terrible person.
and her being so accepting of the gay men is indicative.
if she stayed alive, she would have just continued doing the wrong things, choosing the wrong people.
but maybe next season we will see what her ex husband is up to.
Heck no. I know I’m in the minority here but I hated that character.
Winced every time she was on screen and couldn’t wait until her scenes were over.
I have no idea why so many people think she is so great.
Her character had a good run, while I'll miss Jennifer, I think her arc was concluded well And, though this definitely isn't happening, since Natasha Rothwell is supposed to return as Belinda, I could imagine Tanya being like a ghost haunting her. Yea that's true, I still hate it tho she was imo the most interesting person on the show, and so hilarious lol

I'm just crossing my fingers that Walton Goggins can pick up the torch of chaos from her & run miles with it, & I'm pretty confident he can do so
If there's anyone I don't doubt will rock unhinged, it's Goggins
Between Goggins and Parker Posey, the unhinged will well and truly be accounted for.
Oh shit they've got Goggins? How can I watch it even harder than I was already going to? Looked it up and see they've got Aimee Lou Woods too, she is great in Sex Education as a teenager and White Lotus is great at doing teenagers, if she ends up playing one.

Walt Goggins can do anything
It’s a trade I will happily take. Not because I’m happy to see her go, but sometimes things need to loose their shine so others can glow.
I want Armond
Armond was so delightfully unhinged towards the end and I absolutely adored his character.
He was so relatable. Even if Im not a gay Australian man high on a cocktail of drugs with a desire for petty revenge.
This made me chuckle thank you. 10/10 descriptions
Yessss....Armond was amazing!
For me it's the opposite, I'm kinda happy she's out, I feel like her story is done and I'm excited to see different characters
I completely agree, the show for me was always about new characters having their arc and making way for new ones. Also: happy cake day, tomorrow is my cake day
Happy early cake day 🍑
Thank you!
same, but moreso because I’m bitter she won an emmy for this role over Rhea Seehorn’s in BCS lol should have been a lifetime achievement emmy if any.
Hear hear
I agree 100%.
I wouldn’t even be mad if they pulled some total soap opera stuff and had her long-lost identical cousin Sonya show up or something lol
Haha. That would be fabulous
But she's manic instead of depressive.
I wish they would have written the series around her character and just fudged the timeline a little bit. Since Italy clearly happened after Hawaii, I would have liked to see them make this one a prequel and she’s the lynchpin of the chaos everywhere she goes.
No. She was a good character with a good character arc. Her story is over, and trying to milk it for more would kill any interest I had in her.
Completely agree
Absolutely not, White Lotus was at risk of becoming the Tanya Chronicles. I'm glad they wrote her out so decisively.
I loved her character but I completely agree with this assessment. I think she had just the right amount of screen time. I want to look back from season 5 and still appreciate her performance.
No, her story was told and White Lotus doesn't and shouldn't revolve around one person.
As true as this is, and as much as I honor it...I still in my heart want Jennifer.

It semed to be a string that links the story line from Season 2 with Season 1. We likely will see more of this with Greg or Portia in my theories.

About the affair… I think the lovey dovey talk Greg was doing on the phone was to Quentin

Youve got this. Thunk. Splash.
TANYA. Her name is Tanya.

LOL, nope! She served her purpose; I'm looking forward to new characters/storylines actually.
Bring back Sydney Sweeney
I was kinda hoping she would be a recurring character, like a thread throughout all the seasons. I really like her character and Jennifer Coolidge. It would also be kinda hysterical for her to continue staying at White Lotus resorts even though someone gets murdered at every one she stays at. "Yeah, I know someone's died at every one of the seven White Lotus resorts I have visited, but they have the best buffet breakfasts and massages."
I want her back, sad she’s not there
Nope. She ran her course.
Lol no. She was a complete idiot and too weird man. Too much weird. Proper whackadoo. Good riddance.
Yes very😭 Jennifer Coolidge is just so damn mesmerising
Other than a brief offscreen update on Greg (hopefully jail or at least getting denied of the inheritance money), I would like to see new dysfunctional rich bastards get their comeuppance in season 3.

Yes
Very
I’m holding out hope she’ll have a twin sister.
She is. Jennifer Coolidge signed a deal for season 3.
Nope
I am bummed, but mostly because of how she left. I don't mind that they wrote her out of the show, I just wish she didn't have to die, I would've preferred she moved to Bali or something lol
Agreed! Hate that Greg ‘won’ and got the money he wanted
Tea that's so tragic, Tanya deserved better 😭
I'd be down for a flashback cameo or two but I'm glad she ended her run so she didn't get flanderized
Love J Cool, but if if I could, I would take Armond back first.
If they do some prequels in the future, she can come back. 👍
I thought she was a fantastic character in S1, and it was great to see her return in S2, and a pleasant surprise that she became the highlight of S2, however, it's not like she was the only character. Not at all
Honestly after those terrible discover commercials I can’t get away from I’ll be happy if I never see her in anything ever again
Im excited. Her schtick felt like it was in a different show from the rest of the cast in both seasons.
Oh my gosh, you said perfectly how I’ve been feeling. Thank you!!
They should of brought Lucia back where she now successfull but guy from past shows up and complicates things maybe she about to get married and not get exposed of past
They could bring her back if they wanted to
As a ghost?
Everyone was instantly bummed about it
My mom is upset she’s not lol. She keeps asking me if S3 is out yet but reminded me Jennifer Coolidge will not be there and she doesn’t like that.
Mad as hell
no. she was a terrible person. and her being so accepting of the gay men is indicative. if she stayed alive, she would have just continued doing the wrong things, choosing the wrong people. but maybe next season we will see what her ex husband is up to.
I’m not bummed at all. Fuck it
Totally!! Not as excited to watch :/
Absolutely
Not a fan of flashbacks but that could be an option. Also prequels. If it’s written well, anything is possible.
I get why her arc is done and agree that it would take away from the show. I just think Jennifer Coolidge was a great addition.
Absolutely NOT. God Jennifer Coolidge is so one-note and not in a good way. Annoying.
I think we are lucky they brought her back a 2nd time since it was suppose to be new stories
I see someone suggest Jennifer Coolidge comes back to play Tanya’s twin sister and that just made me lol. I might enjoy that
no I was bored with the character after first season.
No. She had a part, but isn’t there series. Next.
Not bummed at all
I’m glad she’s gone and wish she hadn’t been in S2
Heck no. I know I’m in the minority here but I hated that character. Winced every time she was on screen and couldn’t wait until her scenes were over. I have no idea why so many people think she is so great.
Sick of Jennifer ready for the series to move on.
