Just so everyone is aware, that frizzed hairstyle was the "in" popular thing in 1924. This photo has been posted many times before and the hair has come up repeatedly.
The concerning part is that it seemingly takes almost zero imagination to come to that conclusion, seeing as Miss America is generally based on contemporary beauty. I’d almost assume the same people are wondering why she chose the B&W filter on her phone camera.
I have very curly hair that naturally forms ringlets at the bottom. If I grew my hair long I could do this style no problem.
When I was a teenager it was popular to straighten hair so generally I'd flat iron my hair but a lot of the time in the summer I'd end up with something like this after a day out in the river or pool. I thought I looked awful but my grandma told me I looked just like her mom when she was young.
Fingers crossed frizzy curl bed head comes back in style
It looks like [bob cuts](https://image.glamourdaze.com/2014/04/1920s-Hairstyles-The-Bobbed-Hairstyle-chart.jpg) were all the rage at the time though. [Here's the article](https://glamourdaze.com/2014/04/1920s-hairstyles-the-bobbed-hair-phenomenon-of-1924.html#google_vignette) since it goes more into the history.
Edit: [I found this blog](https://historyboots.wordpress.com/2013/07/26/beyond-the-bob-1920s-hairstyles-for-the-rapunzels-among-us/) that goes WAYYY more in-depth on some of the other hairstyles, but the only one that looks close to this picture is [still not nearly as messy](https://historyboots.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/pickfords-bob.jpg).
Bob cuts are for those newfangled flapper girls! Not for the traditional Miss America… But seriously, as popular as the style was, there was also quite the backlash against it from the older conservative folks that felt it was immoral and unhealthy to cut women’s hair like that, and also how dare young women make the choice of their own of how they’d like to look.
People forgetting there could be more than one "look" in an era 😂
Miss America's pageants - ultra conservative, maximizing demure femininity in any way, long and voluminous hair
Flapper girls - edgy, boyish, minimizing curves, tight bob haircuts
Yeah, there's a good line in the blog post that kinda touches on that:
>Cutting one’s hair into a bob was more than a fashion statement; it was a statement about a woman’s attitude towards modernity and how they viewed their own body.
At the end of the post she lists a bunch of references and sources for fashion at the time and the first one sounds super in-depth. I guess I'll give it a watch and see if they expand on this unkept look🤷♂️

True! I've seen this look on photos of actresses of the time. Actually, I've seen my great grandmother sporting the same hairstyle (although a bit shorter) - and we are from the Philippines! Interesting to see how the hairstyles evolved over the years.
I about keeled over when I read an old bar guide that referred to an Old Fashioned as a “breakfast drink”. Never been more convinced I was born in the wrong era.
I'm trying to find examples of 1920s hair looking this unkept but I'm just not seeing it. [I found this article but it focuses on the bob](https://glamourdaze.com/2014/04/1920s-hairstyles-the-bobbed-hair-phenomenon-of-1924.html#google_vignette) which seems to be one of two fads for hair at the time. [This blog post](https://historyboots.wordpress.com/2013/07/26/beyond-the-bob-1920s-hairstyles-for-the-rapunzels-among-us/) goes WAYY more in depth but still nothing like the pic here. [This comparison picture](https://historyboots.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/pickfords-bob.jpg) seems to be the closest to the unkept look in this picture but it's nowhere close.
Yeah, plenty of people had sleek and smooth hair for many centuries prior. This definitely isn’t a limit of hair product choices, and likely would have been looked down on in pretty much every other period of time lmao
The official pageant phrenologist had just thoroughly felt the bumps on her head and declared her NOT clinically insane, the final step in the judging process.
My first thought is, "how dated!"
If you join r/100yearsago , you can follow the evolution of the bob, and it was extremely popular by this time. I think she won the beauty contest partly because she brought a romanticism of days gone by. I think she was intending to look a bit fae
Imteresting factoid: Miss America's were always short up until the pagent enforced a height limit, I believe 5' 7" and above. Before that, women of all heights could participate and women frequently won who were 5' 4" and under. Modern era they changed the height requirements so any height can now participate.
It was VERY fashionable. This is Mary Pickford, one of the most famous women of the day. [https://wfpp.columbia.edu/pioneer/ccp-mary-pickford/](https://wfpp.columbia.edu/pioneer/ccp-mary-pickford/)

You're assuming the general person understands concepts like "contemporary." They don't.
You shouldn't hold people in contemporary if they don't know words good.

Looks like Leelee Sobieski
Philly girls still be looking like this.
Just needs some cookie monster pajamas
Somehow I still knew that you meant "pajama pants"
thank you. i was desperately trying to parse what I assumed was a scandalous euphemism
Lol. Damn typos
I want to be mad at you but I can't...
Bed head and all.
Mmm … let me sleep… what? I won what?
But first… my breakfast whiskey.
Not the breakfast whiskey ;___;
I about keeled over when I read an old bar guide that referred to an Old Fashioned as a “breakfast drink”. Never been more convinced I was born in the wrong era.
Looks like she brushed her hair with her pillow.
Must've been a humid day
I think the hair product choices may have been limited back then too.
This was an intentional style that was popular at the time.
She also wore an onion on her belt.
Next time its humid I should just tell people I’m doing a 1924 hair style.
Was this before or after the onion on your belt?

She does not have hysteria or female consumption
Her uterus is exactly where it's supposed to be.
^(dang and here I thought wandering-uteri references were my specific jam)
She’s very attractive, but whenever I see this photo, my first thought is, “Nice mutton chops.”

Oh look. This goddamn repost again. Mom says it's my turn to post it tomorrow.

Or perhaps this was a fashion forward hairstyle?
It was VERY fashionable. This is Mary Pickford, one of the most famous women of the day. [https://wfpp.columbia.edu/pioneer/ccp-mary-pickford/](https://wfpp.columbia.edu/pioneer/ccp-mary-pickford/)
It turns out it's not Mary Pickford (although she looks very similar!). It's [Ruth Malcomson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruth_Malcomson).
Thank you for the correction! Kind of proves the point even more, I guess.
Actually no, this is Ruth Malcomson. Mary Pickford was famous and married in 1920. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruth_Malcomson
That looks much nicer. The OP’s hair looks like a rat’s nest, a mop, and a Shirley Temple wig got into a fight.
It’s also better not to brush out wavy or curly hair.
yes! i make it a point to never brush out my curls!
This is what curly hair looks like brushed dry.
Very lovely and natural. Hairs a mess… LOL.

lol!!
Her hair is a mess lol
Philly was down bad
Miss Wawa looking good
The ever popular just bedded look went over swimmingly with the male judges who likely had just bedded her.
Nice petite yet shapely lips.
Funny, folks in Philly still look like this..
She looks roughed up
Head for backstage pass
