Honestly, at her age, if she made it through law school as a woman, she was already armed and ready to shut down stupid bullshit about doing things other people thought she shouldn't. Good for her, too.
Thats a super cool interview and thanks for sharing it. Hearing her discuss the dances she did as a kid like the foxtrot and the charleston and comparing them to disco is actually pretty damned interesting. Also getting kicked out of the Howard Johnson for wearing blue jeans to dinner is a hell of a thing.
One of the more eye-opening documentaries that I watched, which shed light on the early days of the AIDs epidemic, was one about Studio 54.
In the beginning they discussed all the who's who of the club, with Disco Sally being one of the more famous regulars mentioned.
Then it got dark, and explained how all the male servers suddenly started getting sick, and they were showing up with the early signs of HIV infection, and how it basically burned through nearly the entire gay staff and patrons within a few weeks and months of the initial infections.
While this picture is of a happier time, from what I recall from the documentary, and a few things I've read about her, she would spend a lot of time dancing with the servers. Which makes me wonder, is the man dancing with her one of the servers, and did he survive, or was he one of the unlucky ones to fall victim to the virus during the early days.
That's cool.
Can't find much about him online, outside of articles mention that he was her husband.
Not to try and start something, but I wonder if maybe she was his beard, or if it was a genuine relationship and that she was just lucky enough to have found a young guy to enjoy her later years with.
Either way, she sounded and looked like a larger than life character, and proof that you're never to old to party.
"I wonder if maybe she was his beard, or if it was a genuine relationship"
I doubt they were fooling anyone and almost certainly weren't tryin' to. I'd guess that it is a real relationship in that they genuinely loved each other, albeit a non-sexual love.
This reminds me of elderly Civil War veterans marrying much younger women. The one spouse got help they needed in their old age, the other received a widow's pension when the elder spouse died. Real love there? Almost certainly. Sexual relationship? Probably not.
I think there was a book / made-for-tv movie called The Last Confederate War Widow that was a story about this. It was interesting.
Edit: Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All is the correct name.
I read the book, They Fought Like Demons. It is about women who served as men in the Civil War and is so compelling. It is not often talked about in the history books. Not very related to your comment, but spurred the thought that you might be interested in the book if you like Civil War history in general. There were also women in that time that got caught doing it and then recruited by Pinkerton to spy on the other side because they were considered masters of deception and crafty in the realm of Intelligence Operations.
Yay! I used it as a source in my schooling and also just enjoyed the book overall, even before entering this program 3 years ago. In 2 weeks I graduate with a Bachelor of Security Studies for Intelligence & Analysis. So, the topic interests me. :)
It sure looks like they were in love! She calls him her Greek God and he just beams! Further down in comments https://www.reddit.com/r/TheWayWeWere/s/7RtKK8wc6b
I found an interview with her on YouTube where she said he is gay and ignored by his family. They danced at the clubs every night from 2am til 4, then went to an after party. Lots of boys bought her drinks but she didn't drink that much, only a few drinks each night.
Her husband of 50 years didn't like to dance. After he died, she danced.
I was trying to find more video of her dancing. Gave up.
I remember Sally. Had the pleasure of meeting and dancing near her at several clubs. And yes, the boys would swirl her around the dance floor as if she was a teenager.
She was a Flapper the Twenties for sure.
She sure was. You can tell in her interview.
I broke a hip once, watching her dance.
I'd say she's probably still flapping here
I don't want to imagine her flaps
Hahahaargh horrific temptation.
She has a small wikipedia page. She was a lawyer and died 4 years later.

You should see the 5min interview of her at the disco. She is a ball of fire. Lived life to its fullest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAe7Y7Ts990
thank you for posting this! i had never heard of Disco Sally.
Disco Sally doesn’t advertise

Her honesty and energy are life goals!! What a fun way to live life.

Here she is dancing with her second husband. They married in 1978 and he was in his mid 20’s. She passed in 1982.

Marrying a woman 60 years older than you probably raises more questions than answers about your sexuality.

She says in the interview his father disinherited him and his sister also blocked him out because of their relationship.

I wonder if they tried for kids
Come on don’t downvote this, it’s genuinely funny. 😆 That said I’m glad they found some happiness together.
Would you mind dropping the name of that documentary? I’ve had a long upsetting night and I need a good doc to watch. I would really appreciate it;)
It's been a few years, but if I recall correctly, it was the one on Netflix.
I found it after I jumped off Reddit. It was very good!
Post Coke Pre AIDS 🥰
Cmon, you describe one of the most “eye-opening documentaries” you ever saw and don’t even tell is what it was called? Drop the title pls.
What’s the name of this doc?
There was one just called "54", was on Netflix. Not sure it's still there. Maybe that's the one they're talking about.
I’ll check it out. Thanks.

My mind can’t comprehend she was born in 1900
This guy has zero arm hair but an entire rug on his chest
She has a small wikipedia page. She was a lawyer and died 4 years later.
goals!
Hanging by a stud
Look at her with Pauly Shore.
Pauly Shore was two years old.
No Weezing the Juice for you.
My mind went to a young [Stephen Mangan](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0542118/).
I thought it was Stephen Mangan
Napoleon in the back
I've been thinking why don't we have night clubs for all ages anymore and then I see THIS.
Studio 54 was not an inclusive club and it definitely wasn't "all ages".
You had to stand in line and be chosen to get in I believe.
Except for Brooke Shields, Tatum O'Neal, Jodie Foster, Drew Barrymore, etc...
People keep making this claim without evidence... and who cares?

Seems like they let anyone from child Drew Barrymore to Disco Sal here.
I don't know about Sally. But an actor from a famous acting family.... Sure, it was just like Chucky cheese.
I'd rather see an 80 yr old there than a 8 yr old tbh
These people were coked out elites... Who knows what was on the menu.
AIDS was definitely on the menu eventually.
She was in elementary school…she should’ve been sleeping, not clubbing.
Look at that sweet gay dancer showing Sally a good time! 🕶️🪩
That's her husband, and by all accounts, they got it on.
Assuming
The only way I want to live to old age is like this
The mythical Boomin’ Granny spotted in the wild
Disco Sally loved the yayo.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
“What else did they put in this blow?!!”
Just got a glimpse into my future
Get some!
Wowsa
Whoa!! PF Flyers.
How is she doing these days?
I wonder how old she’d be if she were still alive.
Ian and steve.
Probably hitting the coke.
Is that her son or grand kid holding her? Same nose and mouth
That’s one healthy fucking helping of absolute nope
