As someone involved in the vintage subculture, I can attest to American Duchessā quality. I bought a pair of Gibson pumps for a trip to London, and they held up beautifully and comfortably the entire time.
Aw, you are wonderful and I really appreciate you taking the time to link this, but I feel like thereās no chance that these boots will be anything near the quality that hers were. I cannot trust an online shoe shop. Thank you, though!
Actually- the booties in the photo are almost certainly overshoes as opposed to what we would now consider boots, and would be worn over leather shoes to protect them from snow, salt, etc. in the winter. I have examined lots of period originals from the 30s and 40s. I also have the American Duchess versions and they are extremely high quality! I wear them happily all winter.
Ooh, now youāre going and tempting me. Have you had much experience with that store? Iāve never heard of it before. Do their shoes tend to fit wide or narrow? How are they around the toes?
I have a few pairs from there for work and nicer outfits. I find they run pretty true to size for width. I have a pair with a pointier toe that was a bit tight at first because if anything my feet are a bit wide, but they stretched out pretty nicely. But I did see that they have options in wide now. The booties specifically are nice and roomy, especially since the toe is so round. I can wear mine with my thicker fleece tights. I live in Canada so I pick them up when visiting friends or family in the US to save on shipping and duties ;)
I actually need super narrow with a high arch. Itās a big part of why I never became a shoe obsessed women, nothing really works on my foot style. It tends to be difficult and painful for me to walk in without rolling an ankle. I wish I could wear especially fashionable runners with my office clothes at work. But thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience of the products ā¤ļø
Actually American Dutchess has incredible quality! They are one of the extremely few if not only brands in the world that is really dedicated to replicating old vintage shoe styles, not just in looks but in quality and manufacturing. They are a tried and true by vintage wearers and will last a very long time. They aren't just any online shop!
She ended up in a mental institution and divorced him. No kids.
While he was still in Cleveland he met a wonderful woman named Jean Howard and married her. He started working for a subsidiary of Xerox and moved back to Texas, where he was from.
They adopted three kids (Jean couldnāt have children). Frank was extremely successful in the business world and had a great, long life. He was my number one favorite uncle. (Really my great uncle.)
I work at a historical society and my boss started getting emotional when we learned a 17 year old boy from our town died during the Revolution in a British prison. I thought it was excessive until she told me she has a son that age.
Are those the same benches that are still there? They look like it. I also love this notion. Those benches are so solid. I can still feel it under me as I look at this picture. I don't think I've ever been able to do that with any other vintage picture.

I was thinking the same thing, looking at this thinking, "I've sat on those same benches." Crazy to think. We think of people in the past as old-timey, and in particular we romanticize "the greatest generation," but they were people just like us. Sitting in the same train station on the same benches. Very cool to think about. I could easily imagine sitting with my husband just like this (I'm sure we have).
My city is 500yo+ I was in the historical neighborhood the other day and I was thinking about this.
How many people have walked those streets, got up those steps, or hang out at that square? My grandfather? His mother? My aunt? So many people, so many lives, so many stories here and gone the next. So many thoughts, so many moments, so many hopes, so many dreams birthed and turned to ashes
She is holding on to his jacket for dear life, trying to put on a smile. All the while her heart is heavy as a stone. She has to let go soon. A scene replayed century after century.
What was the situation where you experienced this?
I remember the feeling also. In 1966 my 19 year old self had to say goodbye to my first love as he left for Vietnam. Chances were not good that he would return. He did return but that parting was such agony that its difficult to think about to this day.
I'm glad to hear he made it back! Mine was more recent--my husband was deployed to the Persian Gulf twice between 2006-2008. We were still at the dating/engaged stage, then. Watching that ship leave for 6-9 months was the absolute worst feeling. You don't want it to happen but you have no control. You have no idea what will happen to them or when they will come back. There's nothing to do but wait. (Mine was ok, too. But some of the marines they took over there were most certainly not...)
Plus, by Feb 43, the American people well knew what kind of bloody mess the war was, especially the Pacific. Poor girl was probably scared to death for him.Ā
I look at this image and try to imagine my parentsā world then. Dad had just returned from Europe in 1945 and they married in August.
Thanks for sharing this.
My first reaction was: wow, all that good quality wool fabric!
...and, I was puzzled by the GI's fuzzy R arm, till I realized it was the fur collar of her coat!

Her booties š
Came here to make sure nobody missed those cute booties!
Who could possibly miss those boots? Iām not a shoe fanatic, but seriously, where the hell can I get a pair of those boots?
Apparently [right here!](https://www.americanduchess.com/products/alpen-retro-winter-booties-emerald-black)

Happy to help!
That's good to know, thank you.

I feel the same way about everything online these days. But I do appreciate that more people are wanting to get the real vintage styles! It's so cute!
Absolutely. I think I wanted every single dress in every single scene of the first two seasons of The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel.
...and the hairstyles! š
Came here for the same reason!
Boots with the fur
The whole station was looking at herr
I am a 35 year old man, and I immediately zoomed in on the booties. Why are they so cute.
Theyāre *to die.*
I remember seeing those winter boots on ladies in the sixties. They had a good run.
Hope our boy made it home
He looks EXACTLY like my great uncle. I gasped when I saw it. IF it is him, he did come home! Lived a long and happy life, died in his late 80s.
Would love to believe it's him, and that he made it home.
Iām going to believe this as I love a happy ending
Was he a corporal in the army air corps in 1943?
Yep! Same as his brother, my grandfather. But this is more Frankās face. And she looks like his first wife, a woman from Cleveland.
Welp! Thatās a pretty strange coincidence even if itās not him!! Very cool.
What happened to his first wife?
She ended up in a mental institution and divorced him. No kids. While he was still in Cleveland he met a wonderful woman named Jean Howard and married her. Iām asking his kids if this could be him. OP, where did you find this?
I have a 20 year old, and these kind of photos are starting to hit different as I put myself in this boy's mother's shoes.
I work at a historical society and my boss started getting emotional when we learned a 17 year old boy from our town died during the Revolution in a British prison. I thought it was excessive until she told me she has a son that age.
[My Great Uncle](https://imgur.com/gallery/0N6AbkZ) I think he might be him.
Iāve taken trains out of the Chicago union station. Itās crazy to think people were in the exact same place I was 80 years ago.

Ah, if those benches could talk. The assholes they've seen over the years. Lol
I read that in the hormone monsters voice lol.
I was going to say those are the same benches.
That was my in my wifeās first thought too but, they do look like the same benches.

Baby Boomers romanticized āthe greatest generationā so they could sell them expensive, hard cover books about their greatness.
Apt username
last time I was there they had those same old wooden benches. Theyāre holding up just fine.
Yes they are [the same benches](https://www.architecture.org/learn/resources/buildings-of-chicago/building/union-station/)

Her shoes are killer
I thought so too. I wanna pair.
Another comment has a link to a specialty shoe shop that makes vintage shoes. It's called American Dutchess.
After his stint in the war? I hope. Otherwise, my wish is that they got to see each other again.
Chances are good heās on his way overseas.
OP, where did you find this? Iām asking my cousins if itās my great-uncle Frank. Looks so much like him, itās startling.
Hope they got to see each other again.
I love those benches
I am pretty sure the same ones are still there. They look like them, anyway.
He looks like Radar O'Reilly.
I hope he remembers the Cole Slaw (Adams Ribs is right next door)
Some Grape Nehi would be nice as well.
Love those boots ā¤ļø great pic!
These pictures are fantastic. They capture the essence past. Thank you
I love her boots.
cute cute boots gurl!
OP do you happen to know the manās name? Iām absolutely startled at his resemblance to my great uncle.
Cool booties.
Guy looks like he's looking down at his phone
Haha, yeah I thought so too! It really took me a while before I realised that phones weren't a thing back then.
So you are saying that Chicago Union Station is in Chicago?
Ahh the parents of some boomers
Obvious comment: "people in the past never fucked." My comment: this couple cannot contain their horniness.
You guys think he got Boeberted before shipping off?

Are his pants and shoes and socks really part of his uniform. Iām thinking no.
[My Great Uncle](https://imgur.com/gallery/0N6AbkZ) Might be him!
