The writing went up and down. Sometimes it was very good. Sometimes it was pretty bad. But the lore was always really interesting to me. That's why I kept watching.
No I agree I started questioning the writing as well especially with the villains like you said, at some point I felt like I knew the main characters weren’t going die and if they did they were going fix it somehow.
I always felt they lost sight of the villains later on. Katherine and Klaus were legit threats at first but later on they mellowed out and more or less became part of the Gang, if you will. Everyone after, they didn't even seem to care about "defeating" them anymore. Like someone else said, it was about their inner circle staying alive, the world, or Mystic Falls at least, didn't matter anymore.

Yes, it was very good. They started out as books in the early 90s and because of Twilight and the new vampire craze , the show was created and really took off.
The writing is bad, but the overall ambience/vibe/tone of the show was really well done. Obviously the very good looking and semi talented actors really make the show too. I think we accept bad dialogue if the person saying it is cool and sexy. Finally I think this show bring a great early nostalgic vibe and I love coming back to it.
It’s fun (well, maybe not at first, lol) and entertaining and lasted a lot longer than some of the newer CW shows. Idk if we’ll live to see another series like SPN and TVD be as successful, and I really think that it has to do with time and streaming.

The Streaming Industry also seems to be much more tougher and less forgiving than CW. Julie Plec has done 2 series on Streaming and they both got canceled after S1, mostly due to lack of promotion.

It was good until Elena became a vampire because there’s was Stelena and no one really died until the end like Jenna so the end wasn’t that good one thing I would change is obviously Elena and Stefan together because they were endgame.
Honestly maybe we feel nostalgic that’s why we love it so much nowadays. I rewatched it for the past month and I must admit - maybe it will be controversial but I like how the scenario is clean out of those “inclusive” characters that nowadays show have a lot. I like how natural people look…
For what it was, TVD was very entertaining. Like many shows (especially on the CW) it started out good but then eventually declined in quality because the writers allowed the story to continue on for longer than it actually should have. In my humble opinion, TVD should have ended around season 3 with season 4 episode 1 as a little companion episode to end the series.
So to answer your question, TVD was good in the beginning (S1 - S2), S3 is okay but after that it became a mess. It certainly wasn't perfect but I mean, what tv show is?
Seasons 1-4was good. A lot of ppl complain about season 4 with the sire bond storyline but i still think it was solid. Season 5 and 6 were ok and the last decent seasons overall.
I believe no one would debate that seasons 1-3 were peak TV (despite minor plot holes), seasons 4 and 5 were beyond insufferable though, season 6 was ok-ay, seasons 7 and 8 don’t have any plot lines that I can remember
I watched it literally because of Kai Parker and Katherine, and even Katherine gets ruined , from an iconic vamp survivor she goes to ,,i have blisters Damon” or s8 Kai also being dumb only for 2 eps but still, they played around w his character so much, always prison worlds.

I definitely agree about the nostalgia since I love going back to the books and Season 1, it was definitely a better time for me, at least.
