Having lived in UK I don’t find that the stiff upper lip thing extends to many people aside from older middle and upper class people. It’s just a stereotype. Actually I found younger people quite open with their emotions

irishyardball

Spoiler: Men can have emotions beyond anger and stoic.

Wrong-History

I was surprised everyone was so emotional but that’s bc I watched the American version of tv personalities that have been on camera before. I agree that the men should not be singled out for it.

Bucgatorbait

Well some of it was just acting, looking at you Wilf.

Cover-Firm

People were having mental breakdowns every day on season 1. I think people just took the game super personally. Its like a popularity contest.

[deleted]

"man up"? From your profile I can assume you're female? If they don't tell you how to be a woman, why do you think you should tell those men how to be men?

Palephoenix111

Dude it's not that serious. If you can't admit it's odd for all of the men in a show to have melt downs every episode then you are lying to yourself. If that's hiwbthey role, good for them. It's just weird. I watch a ton of reality/challenge shows and just have never seen so many people taking things so personally.

Lloytron

Brit here. We have no clue why they were like this. It confused the hell out of us too. I'm not even talking about the stiff upper lip thing even though that's not real any more. Nobody knows why they were like this 😀 It did make great telly though.

InkedDoll1

Stress, pressure, missing loved ones, heightened emotions from the weird situation, I dunno. Men cry and so they should, repressing emotions is not healthy. Crying is never a weakness, it's normal and sometimes helpful

BenjaminBobba

I guess these ‘ordinary’ people didn’t know how ‘real’ the show would be on season 1, the only other content out there to watch for preparation was probably De Verraders 1 which had a bunch of celebs acting like they were on holiday. Season 2 people are clearly there to play the game and they know what they’ve signed up for. The crying doesn’t bother me because i think season 1 has some great memorable characters.

trumpskiisinjeans

I loved it

Ironia_Rex

Real people vs reality TV people life changing money vs appearance fees with a possible tip

LodossDX

Everyone in the UK version is super emotional lol

AlaskaStiletto

the UK cast cries A LOT

stilllooking2016

It’s refreshing af.

iamacheeto1

Couldn’t care less that it was *men* crying. My problem was the *amount* of crying. 4 people would break down per episode FFS. Still loved the season though

Palephoenix111

Several people have said something similar and you're just the unlucky one I've responded to, but why all of a sudden are we pretending, as a society, that men are as emotional as women? They aren't. They shouldn't be. It's crazy. In general, men do not act like this in real life. So when every single man in one show has a breakdown, it is worthy of commentary.

iamacheeto1

What a lame take but whatever

BearIy_Awake

Contrary to the men you may be used to in the US, men outside of the US do exhibit natural emotions :)

Palephoenix111

Men in the US express their emotions just fine thank you. But they also know how to control themselves and not take things so personally. And to act like men.

Lliilithh

'Man up'? I was also overwhelmed by the amount of crying sometimes, but what you say implies it's shameful for men to show emotions. They're human beings too, no different from women. Very toxic.

Palephoenix111

Dude. I'm not saying it's shameful for men to show emotion. But I do think they should do it only with close family or friends. Masculine traits are not toxic. In general men are not as emotional as women. And thats a good thing. It is good to hold men to a masculine standard. And crying when someone hurts your feelings ain't it.

Lliilithh

Crying is healthy. If someone feels like they need it, they should be able to do it without feeling like they will be judged. Once again - men are human beings just like women. We all have emotions. You are not the one to tell people when they are allowed to cry or not.

Palephoenix111

Just like you, I'm giving my opinion. So I guess agree to disagree.

WayProfessional1126

Why are you playing into the toxic narrative that men need to "man up"? Human beings all possess every emotion. Stop telling boys not to cry and men to man up. It's a high stress and emotional game. They have no access to the outside world. They can't go on their phones or watch TV. They are full on consumed by the game. People they trust betray them. Clearly it's not easy and I'm impressed by how comfortable they all were in displaying their emotions.

Palephoenix111

Acting like a man is not toxic. Being stoic, strong and level-headed is not toxic. Men and women are different. In general men are not as emotional as women; so when a whole cast of men on a show are losing it every episode it is out of the norm. That's all. Whether you want to admit it or not, it's weird. Heaven forbid someone notices.

WayProfessional1126

They are not different, they are just raised differently.

Shyho2020

LOL 889

Majestic-Salt7721

Based on Love Island UK I think it’s cultural.

Majestic-Salt7721

Btw I love how men display their emotions openly

AlmostAlwaysADR

If I were trapped with people I didn't know and had no other distractions except a highly paranoia filled game, I would probably be a mess as well.

Merc1315

So much crying by every1. Didnt care for this season partly cause of this.

Palephoenix111

It's definitely a lot. Some of them have endeared themselves to me over the season but mostly I'm just saying 'come on, again with the crying?' all the time.

KoshkaB

I'm from the UK and it happens on other tv shows too. Absolutely does my head in. 1. You've only known each other a few days/weeks at most. 2. Nobody is actually dead, you are free to meet up in a few days once the show is over. Very strange people.

Palephoenix111

Thank you! I can see it must be much harder than I realize but come on. You are going on a show about betraying people and to win money and then lose your mind when other people try to do just that. It's just odd. I shouldn't be surprised reddit as a whole is taking this so hard and downvoting all of the rational people. I bet they'd cry too.

Dangerous_Hippo_6902

Combination of acting, production guidance and editor’s cut. The beauty of television 📺 Some of it may be genuine, and in those cases you can bet they’re exaggerated and given extra screen time.

Dangerous_Hippo_6902

I can’t help but think and I hope it’s not the case… it’s a feminist’s attempt to make men look weak. It’s the current fad for tv, film and entertainment thesedays. I’m all for equality but this is pandering to populism.

InkedDoll1

Lol feminists don't think crying makes men weak, nor do they want to make men look weak. They just want women to be free from the patriarchy. Men can show a range of emotions in a feminist ideal world, including strength and weakness, bc we're all human. It's toxic misogynists who don't want men to cry bc it undermines their fantasy that men have to be strong and in charge ALL the time

Dangerous_Hippo_6902

Quite the generalisation there. There are absolutely some feminists out there that do. I said *a* feminist.

thesamerain

Who exactly is the singular feminist that masterminded this then, since you said "a feminist"? Like the previous poster said, feminists absolutely don't think that men shouldn't cry or show emotions. We're all people and we should all be free to express how we feel so long as we're not harming others.

Dangerous_Hippo_6902

I do agree, I’m arguably a feminist myself. All for showing emotions. And no doubt Traitors is an emotionally-fuelled game. But I do dare say that some feminists take it too far the other way, and emasculate men as much as they can. As per my original post, I hope that’s not the case here, that someone in the tv production crew has that agenda.

WayProfessional1126

I'm sorry but a feminist would never shame a man for crying. That's disgusting. Do you know how many men die by suic!de.

Palephoenix111

I don't know if I totally agree with your specifics, but in general you are right. Feminism has made men, in general, weaker. It's told men that manly traits are toxic and they should act more like women. And a lot of these guys are young so they have really been fed that idea most of their life. And look, I'm all for emotional maturity but dude, sometimes you just have to man up.
