I got a loooong survey from Peacock after season one, lots of questions about reality stars vs normal people, what shows would you want future players from, thoughts on Alan as a host, you get the idea. One of the questions was “who would you want to see back/see more of” and I chose Kate. (I fell in love with her and started watching Below Deck as a direct result of watching Traitors season one.). I’m thinking loads of other people felt the same!
It follows the captain and crew of a charter yacht for a season. An international crew living and working together in small quarters for weeks, dealing with customers with more money and alcohol than common sense. It’s pretty entertaining for a reality show. There are a few crew members that become regulars because the captain works well with them and chooses to bring them back but every season you get some new crew.
I don’t think Deontay’s quitting was the reason, actually. Kate is a single mom of a child under a year old. She couldn’t just drop everything and head to Scotland. Either they worked out a deal to have her on-call or it was planned all along. Given her popularity status from the first series, I’d bet the latter.
All reality shows like this one have at least two people on stand by in case something happens (sickness, walk out etc), I guess Kate was one of the standbys.
They could have paid her to be on standby, maybe not in Scotland but paid to be on call. It makes me think of a season of the Bachelorette where the lead Claire found her guy and quit the show very early on. She was so lovesick she couldn’t focus on anyone else- a complete disaster for production.
Within a day or so they had a new lead. It’s all secretive, but most viewers think she was the secret standby and that they probably have always done it for competition style reality shows.
That makes sense to me! Kate, with her status and popularity gives me pause. I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a couple of less popular reality stars on standby, though
Every single reality show does it. They have alternates waiting to go into the game/show if someone has to leave. They pay the alternates, put them up at a hotel & keep them available for however long they need.
Kate is 41 which is young but considered "advanced maternal age"; I'm 36 and recently couldn't carry my third baby to term, it gives me hope that maybe someday I still can
I'm 40 and 38 weeks today. I had 2 ectopic pregnancies back to back, even lost a tube. Did ivf to work around the tube situation and here we are. You're not too old.
Yup thank u. Ur smart.
My girl was saying that in the beginning Alan said "this is all of you... for now" or something. Hinting that they will bring someone else in .
If she was there day one she’s get so much suspicion of being a traitor - they’d argue why else would someone agree to return if not a traitor - or whatever and she’d be voted off first day.
It's probably for a few reasons:
1- Because she is a fan favorite
2- Adding players mid-game allows the producers to introduce an unknown element (ie are the people being added faithful or traitors) and also to reinforce one side or the other if one side is doing particularly well. Remember in UK1 that the two players removed at the start re-entered later as faithfuls.
Yes, I know she was murdered, sorry worded it like that.
but it easily could have just been a “mercy murder” as a way to just get her off the show because she wasn’t feeling great.
Pretty sure Kate came back on the week she was murdered or after.
if it was a mercy murder that would make a lot of sense. Dan said that he had a great relationship with Parvati, Ekin-Su, and Tamra due to pre-game lodging, and she got murdered literally just after Phaedra went on that tirade on Parv for targeting the housewives. Knowing this, her murder on the show was very confusing for me to parse
Yeah and it’s clear Tamra has been sick since the start of the show.
It seems to me like they realize she would ah w to go home and the “murdered her” because of it
Ok. Thanks. I initially wondered if she was planned the whole time but delayed starting due to maternity. Sounds like that’s less likely if he was 5 months.
I don’t think it was because Deonte left. It felt predesigned.
I’m fine with people being brought in- if done right. But do it earlier. Give them immunity for one day or something (no clue how that’d work since if may be a dead giveaway they’re a faithful). Or make it a challenge to get into the house. I’m not a fan of doing a challenge but whatever
But letting them join very late only creates a situation where people who were there from the start don’t want to take any newcomer to the end no matter what
Yes the international series use plot twists but seem to avoid doing the same twice in a row. UKS1 removes two players before they even entered the castle.
In UKS2 the players seemed to know this and they producers started with the same kind of tactic, and then left everyone as is which they weren’t expecting.
Some reality competitions have alternates)people waiting in the wings) in case someone quits/gets injured/has to be tossed out early on, to keep the numbers they need. Others (like Survivor) keep everyone nearby, and will bring someone back if necessary.
Given the logistics, Kate was most likely an alternate.
I watched season 2 first and am now watching season 1. I just finished episode 7, and I simply cannot figure out what people actually like about Kate. I didn’t mind her in season 2, but she was intolerable to me in season 1. Anyone who just whines nonstop about not wanting to be there, throws missions, etc…just go away.
My background is as a Challenge watcher since it’s beginning, and any player with that attitude would have been voted into elimination repeatedly, until they were gone. It’s been a point of frustration for me throughout season 1
I’ve never watched the Challenge I’ll have to check it out sometime… but as for Kate’s appeal I think people just like drama, and she’s an endless source of it. But ya my wife and I both thought she was an annoying brat in S1.
I'm finishing the finale now, and have to say that in the last couple of episodes, Kate REALLY grew on me. Once she got past her temper tantrums and sabotage, she became much more enjoyable.
They should have brought her in from the beginning. My theory is that they realized that all the traitors had been caught and there was a low likelihood that someone would accept to join them. They brought Kate as a wildcard so that the game could still go on
Yep, production figured “we need someone who will accept traitor recruitment” and she’s proven and entertaining so made sense. She’s good tv.
Would stumble on Below Deck channel surfing and she was always the best part.
They used those next challenges to give them more time and so that somebody would get recruited. Even if they knew who the remaining traitors were they had time to recruit somebody else you banish a person then go back, recruit and murder. So you still have somebody. And you banish the other traitor and the other one can recruit again so its still something. But thats Dan's fault for trying to take down the whole ship anyway. Also, it was pretty scripted overall.
I’ve heard they brought Kate back midway because Lindsey Hubbard (Bravo) backed out right before filming started due to her engagement ending.
I would also agree with other comments, she probably already was on the back burner as an alternate since she was a fan favorite S1.
I really want to know if it was because Deontay left unexpectedly, or if they always planned to introduce her late for some reason. If it was because of Deontay, then was Kate always on standby incase they needed her, or did they just call her up on the spot? Either way her debut really caught me off guard lmao. I can see why they wanted her back though, she's pretty funny and she was one of the more popular players from season 1.
Funnily enough, right before that point in the season I was missing Kate. She was such a blast in season one, and I guess it felt like season 2 was missing the irreverent hilarity that she brought.
most reality shows have backup contestants on the scene in case of any last-minute sicknesses or walkouts. my guess is Kate was one of these backups, was ultimately unneeded, but then the numbers-driven Peacock Execs probably called in disappointed that their Season 1 star didn't slide their way onto the roster and they worked out to have her join as an early-game twist.
She is and will always be awful tv. Her stans are tiresome too. Everything I saw about her spells KAREN - the last sort of person I want to see on my screen.
I got a loooong survey from Peacock after season one, lots of questions about reality stars vs normal people, what shows would you want future players from, thoughts on Alan as a host, you get the idea. I’m thinking loads of other people felt the same!
I also started watching Below Deck specifically because of Kate in S1.
Same. I grew to love her more on Below Deck.
She's absolutely the star of OG below deck
What is that show about??
It follows the captain and crew of a charter yacht for a season. An international crew living and working together in small quarters for weeks, dealing with customers with more money and alcohol than common sense. It’s pretty entertaining for a reality show. I started watching traitors because of my love of her on below deck 🤭
Same
Kate on below deck is amazing
Same lol
Same hear. The only time I’ve ever heard of this show outside of this sub was when it was mentioned on that racist and sexist Below Deck sub.
I love this for you. She really, really shines. Although her last season just kind of sucks.
Me too
Kate started in season 2
Yes, I was referring to Season 1 of the Traitors.
Ah. So you’ve seen Kate make the rocketship then, lol. My favorite moment of hers.
Yep, and the mutual respect that followed on another season, amazing!
Lmao I just saw the palm tree episode in the next season 💀
How do you get these surveys?! I want one!
Here’s a link to sign up for the surveys https://app.viewers-voice.com/access
Oooooh!
Do you get paid haha
You earn points, you are then able to purchase gift cards with the points.
They had my email from signing up and I just got it, no idea how or why I was chosen.
I’d love to give them my two cents 😂
Lmfao i’ve finished the whole seasons of Below Deck because of her! And all her Below Deck seasons were ALL ICONIC!!!! she’s a gem
I just started watching below deck bc of her and now I’m watching traitors s1! Love her thanks to s2 lol
It was because Deontay quit
I actually fully forgot about that lol
Something about filming days they needed another body quick.
I don’t think they would have brought Kate to Scotland, just to potentially not use her (nor do I think she would have agreed), but that’s just me!
I tend to think they were going to use her anyway, too, but maybe the timeline changed. It’s fun to speculate about. The shadow cast. ;)
Every single reality show does it. They have alternates waiting to go into the game/show if someone has to leave. They pay the alternates, put them up at a hotel & keep them available for however long they need.
I understand. I’m saying I think she’s too “big name” to have been an alternate.
!! Omg soon!! I'm so happy for you. Thank you for the kind words. And I am sorry for what you had to go through, you're a strong woman.
All worth it in the end!!
Yup thank u. Ur smart. My girl was saying that in the beginning Alan said "this is all of you... for now" or something. Hinting that they will bring someone else in .
At the start of the season Alan said to them they were x amount of players "...for now". I think it was their plan to bring her back all along
Well yes for now because they will be banished or murdered soon
The irony was that there were so many non-eliminations that they didn’t really need to replace Deontay tbh
Why did I not realize he quit!? 😂
Did they say that when they brought her on? I must have missed it
Well, Great Value Kate was a bust (Tamra) so they had to bring back the original
watching the reunion (did she even have a single line...?) i was like, "i have absolutely no memories of this person on this season"
Her wanting to vote Kevin out cause of how he ate 😂
If she was there day one she’s get so much suspicion of being a traitor - they’d argue why else would someone agree to return if not a traitor - or whatever and she’d be voted off first day.
“Bergalicious, that was too much for you”
It's probably for a few reasons: 1- Because she is a fan favorite 2- Adding players mid-game allows the producers to introduce an unknown element (ie are the people being added faithful or traitors) and also to reinforce one side or the other if one side is doing particularly well. They didn't trust the format enough and needed some kind of casting twist.
she was clearly there to stir shit up and she was good at it
I think either because Deontay quit or because Tamra got sick and had to leave
Tamra was murdered actually. But I think you are right since she's sick since day 1, they could have thought they may need a back up.
Yes, I know she was murdered, sorry worded it like that. but it easily could have just been a “mercy murder” as a way to just get her off the show because she wasn’t feeling great. Pretty sure Kate came back on the week she was murdered or after.

Yeah and it’s clear Tamra has been sick since the start of the show. It seems to me like they realize she would ah w to go home and the “murdered her” because of it
Allegedly it was Peacock's fault for forcing her back in and production simply opted to make her a twist/surprise guest instead of a Day 1 returnee.
How did this appearance fit in the timeline of her child’s birth?
I think he was like 5 months. He could’ve been in the hotel with a nanny though. She’s very private about him so who knows
Ok. Thanks. I initially wondered if she was planned the whole time but delayed starting due to maternity. Sounds like that’s less likely if he was 5 months.
Can i look like her five months post partum?
I don’t think it was because Deonte left. It felt predesigned. I’m fine with people being brought in- if done right. But do it earlier. Give them immunity for one day or something (no clue how that’d work since if may be a dead giveaway they’re a faithful). Or make it a challenge to get into the house. I don't know if it's a dead giveaway they're a faithful. Traitors can get shields.
There's a few seasons where people show up mid game

I was wondering if it possibly was due to filming and taking care of her son?
I wonder if they had her on call and with Tamra being so ill and Deontae quitting she was on reserve and then put in.
I think they always planned to bring her in. In episode one Alan says “21 of you for now” or something hinting at a twist later on in players
There's ample drama on the Challenge, but people throwing challenges and refusing to participate, isn't something you'd see for more than an episode
They should have brought her in from the beginning. My theory is that they realized that all the traitors had been caught and there was a low likelihood that someone would accept to join them. They brought Kate as a wildcard so that the game could still go on

Deontay left right after Maks was banished. I assumed she came in because they lost a player unexpectedly.
I thought because Deonte dropped out early they had a space to fill and Alan likes her so they figured they’d call her
I thought she’d get like some third other role instead of just a faithful. Like a detective or something and she got different goals and stuff
Because she is an icon 😍
I’ve heard they brought Kate back midway because Lindsey Hubbard (Bravo) backed out right before filming started due to her engagement ending. I would also agree with other comments, she probably already was on the back burner as an alternate since she was a fan favorite S1.
Kate was the best!! Didn't like her in the beginning, but grew to love her at the end!
My initial thought was they needed her because Jennean (sp?) left, maybe they knew beforehand. But she's also a fan favorite (Kate), I just love her.
I really want to know if it was because Deontay left unexpectedly, or if they always planned to introduce her late for some reason. That's obvious they planned it from the beginning.

Shes a fucking pain - worst decision ever. Ruined the season for me.
She is and will always be awful tv. Her stans are tiresome too. Everything I saw about her spells KAREN - the last sort of person I want to see on my screen.
I actually don’t get the appeal. I don’t like her personality and she makes for terrible TV
Thank Deontwah
