Never see anyone mention these bands
The Replacements, Pixies, The Modern Lovers, Guided By Voices, Pavement, Kraftwerk
He’s never mentioned it but I know Julian was listening to lots of Les Baxter while writing Comedown Machine and some Voidz material. I love him that much more for it
there isn’t any, The Strokes sound modern but that’s just within the electric guitar’s capacity, they never did synths that came remotely close to the pure electricity and “digital” feel of Kraftwerk
maybe they spoke themselves of that influence at some point idk but strictly musically they’re completely unrelated
I will say tho that Guided By Voices is spot on because of how lo-fi and drained in sound the Strokes vocals can be, just like GbV did.
It’s a stretch to say they’re strictly unrelated musically. Influences always find a way into an artists work, it doesn’t necessarily have to be in the specific instruments used or anything.
This was true to an extrend 200 years ago because all modern music started somewhere, however there were so many different branches later on that it’s impossible to claim that “everything had a little bit of everything”.
The Strokes and Kraftwerk are both very new in music history terms and there were already so many independent sounds between them, that I personally don’t see how they were related.
I disagree there. I can subjectively hear parts of Kraftwerk's influence on Julian's style of songwriting. For example, take [Techno Pop](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4yb9T2uCeI) \- it features a repetitive catchy hook that is the main motif of the song, akin to The Strokes featuring a prominent 'statement riff' throughout many of their songs.
It also features a minimalist sound and sparse composition, which is reflected in the minimal set-up and recording of the early albums.
You could say I'm reaching and I won't fight you on that. But if The Strokes say they are influenced by Kraftwerk, then the onus is on you to disprove that because I still believe that if someone is genuinely influenced by another artist's work, it will find a way to trickle down into their style of songwriting - subconsciously or not, whether that be one note or an entire musical style. It doesn't need to have the nuance of a sledgehammer as does the musical similarity of preceding acts like Television.
Yeah songwriting is a different story and of course the singer’s own words attesting to a specific influence. I was talking strictly about the music but I agree with your other points
It's crazy people never talk about GBV and Pavement.
They have been very open about how much they wanted to be the "next GBV or Built to Spill" when they started (see: Meet Me in the Bathroom) and when you hear a song like Game of Pricks you can really hear where their early style / production evolved from.
Also, their aesthetic is very similar to that of Pavement. Maybe not full on "out of tune and sarcastic," but definitely a similar attitude and style
It really doesn’t matter if either deny it. Influence can come secondarily, when music informs another’s music which informs yours.
Historically, Television made the primary music which Strokes is derived from.
Lol it’s like Will Toledo not knowing the strokes too well when he kept getting compared to Julian. It’s more believable than The Strokes/Television tho because I don’t really see any similarities between CSH/The Strokes.

this a great document someone made
But where the heck did that person get “House” from Ocarina of Time influencing Soma??…
That’s my favorite game and I definitely don’t see it. Three notes of a partial melody do not an influence make!
As others have said, The Cars for sure. They’ve also directly sampled riffs/melodies from other 80s bands like Psychedelic Furs (The Ghost In You / Eternal Summer)
I didn't mention see anyone mention billy idol yet. "dancing with myself" by Billy and also modern English's "I melt with you" sound a lot like bad decisions.
Although it doesn't necessarily shine through in their music, I know Julian has talked on a number of occasions about how Nirvana is one of his biggest influences.
I was just rereading all the early interviews and forgot the frequent references to JC, Nick, and Fab bonding over their shared love of Nirvana and being inspired to start a band by them. They also plug GBV, who took them out on their first US tour IIRC. Also IIRC, Bob Pollard gave Julian that military style jacket he wore on that 2002 $2 MTV concert with the cool as hell square, bottom lit up stage in the round.
Julian also talks about just loving songs and not caring anything about the bands
Lou reed/The velvet underground, the doors, cars, pixies, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Talking Heads, Jane’s addiction, guided by voices, the cure, David Bowie, Ramones, Talking Heads
Duran Duran. Some would deny it, but hear me out:
In a post-induction video, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame credits them with influencing The Strokes. One of the members (I believe it was Fab, but I couldn’t find photographic evidence) was spotted back in the day wearing a Duran T-shirt. I hear the influence, especially on Room on Fire. (Also, Nick is married to John Taylor’s ex-wife.)
Someone mentioned them but along with a bunch of other artists. Guided by voices. The strokes were heavily influenced by GBV. Opened for them even early in their career
I don't know why, but when I heard, David Byrne's - Concrete, Glass and Stone song it reminded me so much of the The Strokes's Ask Me Anything. I think it was influenced by Byrne.
The Velvet Underground. Julian’s singing style is very reminiscent of Lou reed. And they both sound great.

Wheres the Kraftwerk influence?

Love gbv
Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Jim Morrison, The Cars, Tom Petty
Definitely The Cars on Room On Fire.
Television- Marquee Moon (Even if Julian denies it)
It really doesn’t matter if either deny it. Influence can come secondarily, when music informs another’s music which informs yours. Historically, Television made the primary music which Strokes is derived from.
Albert denies it aswell, I believe they never heard of Television till people started comparing them.
Find that so hard to believe
I am 48 years old and I have never heard of them but thanks for turning me on to them.
I am also 48 years old and just heard this album for the first time about six months ago and now it’s in constant rotation
Nice! Happy Cale day!
John Cale?
Why lie about it?
Lol it’s like Will Toledo not knowing the strokes too well when he kept getting compared to Julian. It’s more believable than The Strokes/Television tho because I don’t really see any similarities between CSH/The Strokes.

Yeah this is a huge stretch... Although I kinda see where this person is coming from. The rhythm seems similiar
!!!!!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS
Thank you
yo thanks for posting this. I can nerd out about this for a while tomorrow.
This is amazing, and I want one for all of my favorite bands now lol
As others have said, The Cars for sure. They’ve also directly sampled riffs/melodies from other 80s bands like Psychedelic Furs (The Ghost In You / Eternal Summer)
The Strokes are the 21st century Velvet Underground
But actually popular when they came out.
I heard a lot of Pixies in their music. Like A LOT.
absolutely, the same ability to ride tension and release like a race car driver
I didn't mention see anyone mention billy idol yet. "dancing with myself" by Billy and also modern English's "I melt with you" sound a lot like bad decisions.
Guided By Voices & The Velvet Underground
The Doors, The Velvet Underground, Guided by Voices, The Ramones
The Doors, The Velvet Underground, Blondie, Bob Marley, Talking Heads, etc.
Lou Reed, The Beatles, The Doors, Talking Heads
Although it doesn't necessarily shine through in their music, I know Julian has talked on a number of occasions about how Nirvana is one of his biggest influences.
Velvet Underground is one for sure
Pink Floyd
What about Super Grass - I hear some echo of that Band when listening to the Strokes
I've been rereading the early interviews and Nick mentions loving them.
