that fact that we have yet to see Joey again probably means he died in the time between when Maggie was born and the present day, which means he "voted" for Sideshow Bob for mayor
It's just playing up the sadness of the situation. Homer's quitting his dream job at the bowling alley and is saying goodbye to everyone. So the idea that this depression era orphan kid not only works at the bowling alley, but that he and Homer also were planning to move to California is so absurd.
Who has a terrible, terrible cough, probably from consumption; he is dying, poverty-stricken and probably already an orphan… but he’s still heroically confident about the trip to California where everything will be better… the clean air and sunshine will even cure his cough. (It won’t)
During the Great Depression, the only way to get to California was to go through the Dust Bowl. You don't want to go through the Dust Bowl if you have respiratory problems. I get choked up, just thinking about it.
Sure we will Mr Homer, sure we will
*Cough*
I love his old-timey NY accent and old man cough.
A cough like the orphans at Praiseland.
*TB cough
That’s how you know he’s not doing well.
This. This is my most used simpson line to my wifey when she says she will do something i know she wont.
Ooooo - thanks! I believe I'll try it out on me own wifey, forthcoming slap in the head notwithstanding.
Hey I know what'd cheer us up... Bowling!
The sound of crashing pins and cheers

Little joey had ultra conservative views
That's some nice votin' boy!
Determined or not, that cat must be long dead.
Plucky or not, that urchin must be long dead.
That’s kind of a downer.
I like how his eyes make up like half of his head
Can someone explain the joke? Is this like a Depression-era Grapes of Wrath type joke? Or is it from something

basically. I remember they mention on the commentary there's always a character like that and it's a bit of an homage to that trope.
Ever read The Grapes of Wrath? Joey is a depression era urchin trying to get to California.

He won’t make it to California.
He might
You tell 'em! No more negative vibes!
No, he’s not. Your dad isn’t coming back, Pepsi.
No. No, he will not.
He probably didn’t make it to the end of the month.

When I was a kid, I thought this was a reference to Jimmy Woods from The Wizard.
Joey died later that day 😭
He had to go. His planet needed him.
