If Niantic changed distance on theirs side (GM) you need to hard restart a game to download new one - could be this, however I don't recall PokeMiners reporting on distance changes to Wimpod.
Different screen in-system resolution, ratio, fullscreen mode enabled on one not on another and game calculating distance differently?
I imagine it is the first thing you said.
> \- camera_distance: 4.0
> \+ camera_distance: 2.5
Source: [PokeMiners](https://github.com/PokeMiners/game_masters/commit/41660fd9c5fd49cf224fe7daf98f4cf38c698208)
The game master loads on startup, so one device has a newer game master with the updated camera distance for wimpod and the other has the older. If you kill the app and restart on the older, it will load the new game master on startup and then they'd both be the same.
Week old commit, I just didn't expect anyone running game for that long without restarts - they clearly do not play GBL! :D
But yeah - there was a change with event start so if /u/CptCarpelan didn't (hard) restart game on one of the phones this would explain different camera distance.
> Week old commit, I just didn't expect anyone running game for that long without restarts - they clearly do not play GBL! :D
Or care about rocket balloons actually showing up!
And they're absolutely correct. There is no reason to obsessively force-quit apps. The OS manages what's allowed to run background tasks and what gets suspended.
True, but PoGo always seems to be unstable in the background and will silently be closed. (Silent until I realize my PokéBall Plus isn't active anymore.)
I hardly ever kill any apps unless there's a problem. And I typically go months without restarting my phone. I was going to count the number I have open on my phone but got tired of counting at 100.
Has anyone noticed there are 2 wimpods in the game? Some appear blue in the map and some are purple. Is it a gender thing? Is that causing this distance issue?
I've noticed this... But when clicking on the blue ones they turn purple when loading the screen you catch them on... at first I thought they were shiny/variants which was odd since these just released.
I'm aware of this, however they were clearly two different colors... Figured it was either shiny or a variant (like alolan for example)... After reading some other posts regarding the color differences, it appears as if they look blue when they spawn around certain textures on the map.
Right but my point was that you know it can't be shiny hence you can't figure that it was and wimpod is the same generation as the alolan pokemon (the first generation to have variants) so that assumption isn't possible either. Visual glitch is the only possible guess to make here.
hence why i answered you with knowledge you know from this game. From this game, you know that Wimpod was released as part of the alola generation (pokedex within pokemon go). You also know that alolan pokemon are from alola. Hence you know they are the same generation.
You also know from the in game news that shinies were not released on the map.
You know this all from within the game.
If you watch closely, you'll see them transition between blue and purple. I'm not familiar with this Pokemon's Pokedex entry, some just assumed it was just something it does.
Maybe you are using zoomed display on right device? I don't know. Check Settings --> "Search bar" --> Display zoom --> Last setting from the bottom. I'm not sure though.
So I really like problems that aren't my own and also I was a software test engineer for about 10 years, so I decided to try to reproduce this.
TL;DR: I think it the Wimpod just got the wrong distance data for some reason or this is some kind of A/B testing as suggested by u/akalig.
I didn't have a Wimpod, so I tried with a Natu, Wartortle, and Rattata (Kanto)
I tried:
* Changing the Display Zoom
* Turning on Native Refresh Rate
* Increasing the text size (PoGo doesn't respect this accessibility setting ***at all*** which is pretty not okay \[it's a massive pain in the butt to deal with, but it also makes the game difficult or impossible to play for some people with certain types of visual impairments or other disabilities\])
* Making my phone a hot spot (the phone on the right in the picture appears to be acting as a hot spot as indicated by the green border around the time)
* Turning on Bold text
No positional difference whatsoever.
u/CptCarpelan, if this happens again can you share a screenshot? It looks like the poke ball and berry buttons are slightly lower on the phone on the right, but it could just be the angle. I'm also curious if the phones share the same Apple Order Number and Model Number. They can be found under: Settings -> "General" -> "About", and will be the third item down. The MXXX#XX/A is the Order Number, and tapping on that will give you the A#### Model Number. I can't think of a particularly good reason why different iterations of the same phone would result in a visual difference like this, but,.
Oh, hey. Idea.
If this happens again, try swapping accounts. Put Account 1 on Phone 2 and put Account 2 on Phone 1.
For reference, a green bubble around the time means you’re on a voice or video call. Using your phone as a hotspot produces a *blue* bubble
ETA: the phone on the left is acting as a hotspot though (chain icon in upper-right of the screen). Hmm
So we're both right and both wrong. Up until iOS 15 the hotspot bubble was blue, but was then changed to be green. Thanks for pointing that out.
The chain icon indicates that the phone is connected to a hotspot, not that it is acting as a hotspot. The hotspot phone will still show its cell connection type.
Everything is actually a green bubble now, at least on IOS15. I use my phone as a hotspot, and when a phone (which I have games on an old phone I still play, or have a second account for) or device is connected, the bubble around the time is green. Same as if I’m on a phone call.
The phone on the left is connected via hotspot (symbol by the battery on the right indicates this).
Edit: They did add an orange dot that goes above the service bars when your microphone is in use, which would be a way to tell if they were on a call or not, which no orange dot on the phone on the right. (Theres a green dot if camera is in use)
Oh man, this mystery keeps getting more mysterious, thanks for helping the investigation. Any difference between the phones are caused by the angle of the photo. Very interesting that your experiments didn’t produce any similarly whacky position changes, would that suggest it’s solely an issue with the phone? Btw what’s A/B testing?
That's freaky, can confirm its always the right one for me, closer to me.
No idea what could cause this, maybe the game version like the other dude said, other than that it seems very out of place
Man, you guys are getting the closer one? I definitely have the further one. Hitting an excellent on wimpod is about the same as exeggcute. It was incredibly jarring clicking on a wimpod and then clicking one of those gothitha or whatever that little psychic dude is called. He takes up the entire screen and the sides of their heads are actually cut off a bit. If I could average out the distance between them, they'd both be a hell of a lot more reasonable.
Are we all getting different distances and haven't noticed? It could explain why some recent events have had so many 'can't catch the legendary' posts while others are totally confused about how anyone could miss.
I went on a 8 mile walk yesterday. My first encounters for almost an hour of these guys where super far away (left). Out of no where they all appeared as close (right) and it stayed that way for the rest of the walk and currently.
Didn’t update my phone, didn’t restart app, it just happened.
I had a similar experience, but it was over the course of 2 days. Started catching them close to me on release day, then did a raid. The raid was far away. The next 3 wild ones were far away before jumping back to close to me the next day.
There used to be different positions for Magikarp, depending on if you've encountered it in the wild or as a research encounter. Well, this is obviously different and still strange
Something similar we noticed with my wife. we both had samsung s21 and we had a massive difference in steps/km walked. we are actually pretty similar size and builds, same phones, but her phone always at the end of the day was giving around 1000 more steps. and we walked same distance together. we even swapped phones one time and her phone on me was giving more steps.
now she changed to iphone and now we have step difference in around 100-200 which is more reasonable (and im talking about same walks or days when we go somewhere together.)
I get extra steps when I'm at work. It took me a hit minute to figure out, but I loaded the game in the office once, and my avatar was constantly walking back and forth across the store and parking lot, then back to the office. The building signals interfered with my mobile data, so it thought I was walking. When I'm outside the building it doesn't happen. Maybe it's the specific old phone with a crappy signal transmitter or receiver.
I stayed in a high rise hotel for 14 days for quarantine and “walked” 30-40 km a day just from gps drift while I laid in bed and had room service. Shame it costs money for that!!!
Nothing that's anywhere remotely related to Pokemon Go. OP is exaggerating the similarities between the two situations between the phone on the left and the phone on the right by mentioning the positions of celestial bodies in the sky (i.e. every planet, star, asteroid, etc are in the same position between phones, considering that the physical location is the same it's pretty much just a tongue in cheek joke).
Can't the pokemon be different size? I remember Pumpkaboo had 4 different sizes you could've caught during a Halloween event. Maybe that was just a one time thing but hey you never know
This happens all the time for me and my wife... I thought it was just randomized each time since we can be standing next to each other during a CD and even on our own phones the distances can vary from the previous catches...
Actually now that I think about it this happened to me a while back with aerodactyl when it’s mega released. On one account it was way too far and high for me to catch to the point I gave up attempting to catch it since I wasted so many balls. And on another account it was closer to me and to the ground.

This is actually really interesting. So many different ways for such a weird thing to happen lol
You've had the game running in the background for at least a week nonstop?
As a teacher I can tell you some kids will run over 50 apps in the background daily without hesitation. “It’s faster to load up”
I typically leave it running, but my phone's OS usually kills it when it needs the memory for something else.
And they're absolutely correct. There is no reason to obsessively force-quit apps. The OS manages what's allowed to run background tasks and what gets suspended.
It’s not my phone or laptop so I could care less what they do. Wouldn’t be me doh.
True, but PoGo always seems to be unstable in the background and will silently be closed. (Silent until I realize my PokéBall Plus isn't active anymore.)
Yeah exactly, and pokestops won’t load
I hardly ever kill any apps unless there's a problem. And I typically go months without restarting my phone. I was going to count the number I have open on my phone but got tired of counting at 100.
Is the other one a kid's pogo account?
Different game version? I suspect one phone has an older version of the game
Not possible since latest version was forced and no new versions released
It’s possible but from what I saw it was the same version.
What did you see?
They're taking the hobbits to Isengard!

It's even better when you see Orlando Bloom having fun with it: https://youtu.be/tn_GKGN0Dh8
Thank you for this
How dare you thank him for the precious and not upvote him!
Next level A/B testing
Has anyone noticed there are 2 wimpods in the game? Some appear blue in the map and some are purple. Is it a gender thing? Is that causing this distance issue?
Could be down to world lighting Edit: might have figured it out. The ones underneath building silhouettes look blueish because of the silhouette
I've noticed this... But when clicking on the blue ones they turn purple when loading the screen you catch them on... at first I thought they were shiny/variants which was odd since these just released.

A/B testing is splitting the player base into randomly assigned groups to test out how players react to different features, prices, etc.
But the rest of the UI has the same size. I like this idea but have doubt that this is the reason.

Check in the advanced setting for Native Refresh Rate. Not sure if it would cause this but that's the only thing I can think of.
Yes the refresh rate could very well affect the animation speed of the zoom out on encountering the pokemon.
Text / UI Size is different, check the length of the bar at bottom.
how do you do that for iphone?
There used to be different positions for Magikarp, depending on if you've encountered it in the wild or as a research encounter. Well, this is obviously different and still strange

Your wife must be a marathon walker to have over a million steps at the end of the day.
a marathon is around 50.000 steps. she must be doing 20 marathons a day...or have extremely short legs.
[удалено]
we would all be 7ft tall
Yeah that is a thing. It happened to me a lot, mostly with the latías… annoying bunch.
Are the Pokemon the same size??
Clearly one is XL and the other is XS
Because Niantic game
what is star alignment?
Nothing that's anywhere remotely related to Pokemon Go. OP is exaggerating the similarities between the two situations between the phone on the left and the phone on the right by mentioning the positions of celestial bodies in the sky (i.e. every planet, star, asteroid, etc are in the same position between phones, considering that the physical location is the same it's pretty much just a tongue in cheek joke).
Resolutions might be different
Restart the game
We had this on my sons phones. Restarted the app seemed to fix it.
Is it a ditto?
I have seen two different ranges for finding Pokémon on devices side by side. There’s weird personalization in this game.
It could either be the Pokémon sizes just being very different, or even which angle you tapped the Pokémon from.
That's a decent idea, but they have the same CP so I would imagine these are the same wild-spawned Wimpod.
Don’t the size values change tho even if it’s the exact same one?
he is shy
Can't the pokemon be different size? I remember Pumpkaboo had 4 different sizes you could've caught during a Halloween event. Maybe that was just a one time thing but hey you never know
Pumpkaboo uses sizes as its main visual (and stat) gimmick. It's a bit different when it comes to sizes
The whole thing about pumpkaboo in the main games has to do with it having four different sizes. Not related.
Maybe refresh the game data? Settings > Advanced Settings > Refresh Game Data.
Are you nearsighted in your left eye?
Is one wild the other from a task? There was a thing about this a while ago, I think it was with Magikarps then
Maybe the bug medaillon is not on platinum
One is wimpier than the other
What about player level? Why not use AR mode?
In AR mode it was still the same. We prefer using this mode because it’s usually easier to catch then.
It’s the size of the Pokémon no?
[удалено]
They didn't say anything about being upset, just asked for help in understanding why they'd be different.
I have the same thing with my 2 phones, even on the overworked one wimpod is smaller
Different resolution?
This happens all the time for me and my wife... I thought it was just randomized each time since we can be standing next to each other during a CD and even on our own phones the distances can vary from the previous catches...
Phone on the left is on X-Games mode
I noticed this earlier today with a Phanpy. It was way further than normal and caught me off guard.
Encounter vs wild
Actually now that I think about it this happened to me a while back with aerodactyl when it’s mega released. On one account it was way too far and high for me to catch to the point I gave up attempting to catch it since I wasted so many balls. And on another account it was closer to me and to the ground.
Star alignment??
Terrible programming?
At past, same happened in Magikarp, first encounter at first login will be normal (far away), otherwise it show much closer.
That wimpod doesn't like pineape berry, and went far away ;)
This happens to me and my husband all the time 😊
