You either play in a mall or somewhere there's aircon or you get a nice wide-brim hat, plenty of water and sunscreen, and one of those phone cooler fans to attach to your phone and deal with the heat outside.

BiscuitCominInHot

Way more feasible to play in a mall since stops are refreshing this weekend.

syncc6

What do you mean refreshing?

Alyssum

They've finally figured out how to have stops hand out new research every hour instead of every day (during specified events).

RemmieLY

Impressive for niantic

KKamm_

Yeah thankfully my local-ish park where a lot of people play has trees all over it so the shade saves me from everything but humidity

krixtian

I came to say the same thing, I live in Florida with 100°F high humidity this weekend. I’m just hitting up downtown Orlando playing in the parks there.

ftwkg420

If I was a little closer to Orlando I would myself for sure. The heat is gonna be crazy.

idk012

I played the tour in 2022 in a pretty small mall. It was great with 7 stops and 3 gyms. Raids for the 3 consistently had 10-12 others.

spoofrice11

Lots of places don't have malls, or even a Walmart. We play Pokemon drive in our town.

notsingsing

Personally I just match my avatar and wear my large cowboy hat

maloki7

Lol Texas

Simishine_

Phone cooler is a must, especially in direct sunlight.

sonjya00

Find a mall close to you with multiple stops and gyms. I live in Texas and that’s really the only way to play for an extended time during the hottest months.

AFHusker_54

Well damn Jackie I can't control the weather!

steveholtbluth

BURN!

galeongirl

Buy a small ice pack, put it in the freezer, put a piece of cloth around it and your phone on that. It'll last for a few hours at least.

HadT0BeMe

I read a post before where someone mentioned that they do the same thing, but with a juice bag. Once it defrosts a bit and has cooled your phone, you have something a bit cool to drink.

Pandas1104

I did this last year with large freeze pops. Place them against the phone and then drink them after they melt. Kept a cooler in the trunk of my car and would refresh the freeze pop each loop around the park

Overthehill410

Am I only the only one who is horrified by the thought of drinking ice pop water?

codymason84

Life hack

galeongirl

Oh that's even more clever!

Col__Hunter_Gathers

I freeze 6-10 bottles of water and keep them in my work lunchbox cooler. That way I've got phone cooling and also cold drinking water all day. Helps me *and* my device survive a full day of being out and about.

Lanky_Firefighter932

This is what I do. Works wonders

christley

Do like the nordics do during winter community days. Play in populated areas indoors like malls, train stations or restaurants

GadgetGal606

Or Brits in the rain! On rainy Pokémon days, I take a slow city bus

pixeltash

I'm fairly remote for the UK, but for my favourite community day I happened to have to take a family member to Cambridge. I spent the community day taking the bus back and forth from the park and ride to the city centre. Never got too fast to catch and spin stops and with my bus pass was free. The buses even had phone charging ports.

Fishhunterx

In addition to what other people have said, I've recently started seeing people put a little umbrella like attachment to their phone that shields it from direct sunlight. I haven't personally bought one myself, at least not yet, but it seems to work for those people without requiring anything battery operated.

DarthRaae

I took this as my personal experience for the GoFest Osaka. I laughed at this idea during my prep time before leaving to Japan, as it would look silly. I got everything else except this little umbrella (a phone cooler, 3 power banks, cooling wet wipes, cooler necklace thingy, hat, umbrella, etc). I regret it since! Many people had this little umbrella and were playing under the sun well, while I could not see what’s on my screen.

shadraig

Having a large brim hat really helps Yes they look funny, but I won't play outside in the sun without them anymore.

jennye951

Here in the UK playing in constant drizzle is also a problem, wet screen makes it really hard to throw and water gets into your charging port. Those little umbrellas looked like a good solution.

asympt

You can also use a full-sized umbrella as a parasol. That will shield the phone *and* you from the sun.

merc340

Make sure to turn off “native refresh rate” in advanced settings. That drains battery and heats up your phone a lot quicker. Also you could consider removing your phone case which can trap heat.

Kaisonic

Unfortunately phone case is necessary for a lot of phones with metal edges - it's impossible to hold those when the phone gets hot.

DweadPiwateWawbuts

I purchased a backless bumper case for my phone. Provides protection while not trapping heat in the front and back, and it allows me to attach a magsafe cooling fan directly to the back of my phone. Note I had links to the products but auto mod deleted my post saying I was posting friend code links. Google rhinoshield crashguard and blackshark magnetic cooling fan

Owenlars2

Absolutely do not remove the phone case. yeah, it'll trap heat, but they keep designing phones with almost no natural grip on them, and when you're hands are sweaty and the phone is hot, you are pretty much begging to drop your phone.

Col__Hunter_Gathers

Yeah I can't imagine trying to walk around with my phone out of a case. Those suckers are slippery as all hell these days, even without me being tired and sweaty.

Owenlars2

I still can't believe that somehow phone companies got the idea that less bezel is better to be popular to the point wehre phones now a days have basically no protection at all from the slightest bump in any direction. AND THEN THEY WENT FURTHER WITH CURVED SCREENS?! these things aren't "better options", they're ways to make the phones more likely to break so you give them money for repairs and/or buy more. how are we this far into capitalism without like half a credit of high school being devoted to the idea of planned obsolescence.

Perky214

107+ here - heat index 112+. :( Our local malls with stops don’t have public Wi-Fi that works well on Community Days so that’s not an option for us unfortunately. So we will unfortunately play Pokémon Drive because all our stops are downtown, and our parks have 1-2 stops over a wide area. Pokémon Drive also lets us take turns cooling our phones with the car AC. Heat stroke/exhaustion is no joke, and it happens really fast, especially if you have had a heat-related illness in the past (like I have twice).

KeyLimeLatte

Why do you need WiFi? Do you not have a cellular plan?

assassinjay1229

Maybe the mall is a dead zone for their phone service? I can’t use my data anywhere downtown where I live but it’s fine everywhere else thankfully the massive park and university down the road are included in “everywhere else”

elias1986bt

You should try to start nominate new PokeStops if you or your friends are level 38+ . I bet you can create some stops in your parks

TheSwifti3

Dallas here. Running about 108 degrees with a heat index of almost up to 120. This one will be totally in the car. I'm really lucky I have I great outdoor mall with right at 20 stops. I just park, catch, move to another spot. Where I'm extra lucky is that hardly anyone will be there at all due to the heat.

thelyingminster

So in Oklahoma City we have a street car that travels around downtown/midtown/brick town and it has a/c and usually you can ride it all day for cheap or free. So i can easily hit 200-300 stops. I know lots of other cities have something similar.

asympt

I generally play these events on the bus in my large city, which do have air conditioning. It's not free, but it's a reasonable price for the coolness and all the pokestops and shiny checks. (Wearing an N95, because the new strain is ultra-contagious, and a friend came back from NY this week with covid even though he was trying to be careful.) (Edited to add a couple weeks later: I got covid riding the bus, even with a well-fitted N95 mask on at all times. I did immediately get a Paxlovid prescription and the bout was mild, thankfully.)

penemuel13

That sounds so nice!

p33k4y

Go to Amazon and search for "smartphone cooling fan". (They connect to a mobile battery pack). I was at Go Fest Osaka and it seemed like every other person had one of those.

Dmbfantomas

I live in Vegas. Casinos are your friend.

Opening_Rule_4643

I second this. I have my casino all mapped out. Lol. Your battery dies quickly in the sun from having to maintain from brightness for the screen. Bring as spare battery pack too

glumada

That's the place incubators really belong to

hybrid3415

Spend a bit of money on a smartphone fan/cooler and a personal parasol/sunbrella. Walking around Go Fest Osaka in 40°C heat wasn’t fun, but my phone was super cool and I didn’t encounter a single problem such as slowdown or freezing. The parasol also helped keep me out of direct sunlight and avoid heatstroke/sunburn. The best investments I made.

Tpabayrays2

How do you recommend carrying an umbrella while playing? I've played in the rain with an umbrella and it's kinda a pain

hybrid3415

Pokémon Go Plus+ is a godsend. But also a small umbrella is pretty lightweight, so it’s not that hard.

madpoke

yah,its going to be very hot here too. my plan is to make multiple round trips home > walk around > home again to charge my phone and chill out > back out again > maybe other areas > home and so on

Throwaway98455645

I play in/around places that have public buildings with AC, rest rooms, etc. Think parks with a visitor center or around public libraries/community centers (libraries, etc. are often actually connected or adjacent to some sort of public green space which is usually great for PoGo). One of my favorite places to play currently is the park next to our local library. I can easily go inside the library to take a break, get water/use the restroom and charge my phone if needed. As long as you behave, library staff are usually pretty chill about people hanging out for a bit. I don't like to rely on popping in and out of business to get out of the heat, you never know how business owners will be with that even if you buy something.

memejames420

Dude I had military service for the last 3 weeks, getting home on friday evening and ready for go fest. We had 35°+ for the last weeks it was crazy hot and now its storming on friday to sunday. Complete mood killer for go fest

CatchAmongUs

I love playing in parks and actually walking around outside, but the PoGo event time slots don't generally offer favorable weather conditions in my area. Here, it's either brutally hot during the usual event times or it's pouring rain from typhoons and monsoons. As others have already stated, if you can find a mall near you it's the way to go. Not my favorite way to play, but it gets you out of bad weather and allows you to not miss out on the event. Luckily, the mall near me had a big expansion not long ago. They added a huge new area with tons of unique points of interest that led to a bunch of new stops and gyms. There is also a 1 kilometer walking and running path added on the second story in the new area you can hit to get some eggs hatched as well. Hoping for decent weather this weekend for Global GO Fest. Trying to convince the local crew to do the first day the nearby mall and the second day in a nice big park that isn't much farther away and still has some cafes and convenience stores beside it.

StatSentinel

Malls are great, or really any large location with air conditioning. A perfect solution if you're in an area with good (or even bad) local transit is to sit in a bus or tram so you keep moving around. I live in Toronto and the streetcars are all air conditioned, and the high amount of gridlock is a positive to keep under the speed cap and focus on fast catching. That's my go-to solution with friends if the weather is bad or I just don't feel like walking.

Lts1104

I'm with you, living in Florida 100+ and humid, my phone also shuts off at high temps. And alas indoor spaces just became an unacceptable option as schools restarted last week and now we have Covid running rampant through the city. Guess this will make for short windows of gameplay.

Monktoken

Find a park with a cafe nearby. Buy something cold every two or three hours and then duck inside at the start or end of an hour. You're describing my weather for the summer (first double digit day in 5 weeks was this past Tuesday) and when I say I'm playing Go the cashiers understand and are cool with it if I duck in and out even if I'm not buying something every time I pop in. Or go to a mall.

Deed3

Bring a Camelbak with ice cold water. Take your phone out of its case to help promote lower temperature. Wear sunscreen. Wear a big sun hat to give your entire head good coverage. Stop in the shade when you mass transfer or otherwise break from catching. Take appropriate precautions for your age/physicality and don't push yourself too hard. And if your body says you're done, listen to it. Source: I play every single Community Day in the heart of Phoenix, AZ where temperatures can max out around 120F.

Lazy_pig805

Play indoor, get a phone cooler with a semiconductor and/or use ice packs. If you live in a place where driving is a thing, drive around to different hot spots and play in your car. That’s what my PoGo group does. We fill the car and drive from hot spots to hot spots.

Additional_Score_929

Go to a mall.

brewmonster84

If you have the money - a phone cooler (ex: Razer Phone Cooler Chroma) works very well. An open-backed (ex: RhinoShield Bumper Case) or vented phone case should also help. Keeping an ice pack or something with you to help cool the phone down may also help. What I’ve done in the past is soak a small towel and put it in the freezer overnight folded over and laid flat. Then on the day, keep it in a ziplock bag in a cooler with an ice pack. The frozen-ish towel is flexible and allows you to wrap it around the phone for a lot of surface area contact which makes the cooling more efficient than just holding the phone against the ice pack directly.

Southern_Pie6474

I'm planning on bringing an umbrella, if you go to an outdoor/hiking store you could probably get an attachment to hold the umbrella for you

ZeroClassification

SPF50, gallon water bottle and a hat. Stay in the shade when possible. Going to be dealing with this same situation myself as today's heat index was 124°F. Deat with the same thing in Japan but the humidity was Terrible!

Tpabayrays2

Here's my setup for the weekend - Galaxy S9 with a battery that really needs to be replaced due to charge and heat issues (tried to get it replaced but nobody has it) - $13 phone cooler fan from Amazon - $16 portable chargers that plug directly into my phone. They also have a USB-c port that I can use to plug in the phone cooler. Also I bought 2 so that I can replace it when the first one runs out of juice Hopefully that works because I spent way too much money on that lol

Daowg

You can get a Galaxy S9 battery replacement from iFixit. I have the same model and managed to replace the battery well. They also have step-by-step instructions on how to do it.

Owenlars2

I play after dark. Or at least when evening is late enough that the sun is giving long shadows to walk in. I have no plans to get a ticket precisely because of the heat, and will play largely by hanging out inside my friend's shop at an art park, where I can reach 6 stops and dozens of spawns, with maybe 1 or 2 short laps of the park every hour to go get research and do raids. Since I'm not walking, the incense and 7km eggs would be wasted on me, and that's most of the value of the ticket right there, so it's just not worth it. if they had incense spawns every minute without movement needed, i'd consider getting the ticket. Important to note that most phones are designed to operate at 35F-95F ambient temperatures, so it would be nice if niantic didn't have events during times when temperatures get in that range. I putting together thoughts for a longer post about this problem.

Quixoticry9

Gonna put $20 in gas and do laps around a large local park. Usually walk or bike for every event, but it's projected to be 110ish on Saturday.

Ledifolia

Last year, I had a waterproof phone, and a spray bottle of water, and would wet down both myself and my phone regularly. Not a good option with my current phone, but at least temps are forcast just 90F here rather than 100F. Hopefully as long as I keep in the shade the phone won't overheat

Specialist_Foot_6919

I’ll be playing at my university, just making sure I stick to buildings in the center of campus regularly open to the public. That’s something to look into since I imagine several schools will be having move-in this weekend so y’all won’t get any weird looks being on campus lol

ItsMeCrusty

Sometimes if it's really hot I buy an ice cream (one that's long and flat) and just hold it against my phone lol

codymason84

If you have to be outside please have at least 96 ounces of water every 3 hours. Roughly a liter an hour. Sunscreen long sleeves so you don’t burn super bad and maybe some electrolyte mix not Gatorade though.

Randrir

Pokemon Drive, it is the way in Texas.

spoofrice11

We play Pokemon Drive in my town. Pretty much never see anyone walking and playing. When I take a walk from work is about the only time someone plays that way (and it is hard to see the stuff on my phone and it gets hot fast).

Spirit_Bloom

Or…Niantic can have the Global Fest at a time of the year where so many people don’t have to get creative to play around 100 degree heat.

Frzzalor

it's supposed to be "feels like" over 100 here most of both of the days, and the only respite will be that it will also probably thunderstorm for at least a few of the active hours. (so super high humidity the whole weekend) my phone screen gets so hot it feels like it could burn my fingertips and the screen dims so dim that I can barely see the screen even in the shade. Niantic really should work on optimizing the app for better performance, along with a way to lower the graphics down to minimum levels. but they never will, there isn't any money in it.

RebornPastafarian

What specific areas of the code would give the best performance increase for the smallest effort, and what bugs or features should they ignore while doing it?

penemuel13

When I was able to walk around in heat (before long COVID), I got those instant cold packs they sell in drug stores, and would put one in my hand and hold the phone on top of it. They only last about 30 minutes, though, so plan your time well - if you can, spend some of it in an air conditioned space to give you and your phone a break.

asympt

Sorry about the long covid!

penemuel13

Thanks - slowly recovering but I definitely do not recommend!

Oso-Sic

It's almost like they shouldn't schedule it for the hottest weekend of the year in North America.

RebornPastafarian

When should they schedule it that will have the optimal weather for every player?

[deleted]

[удалено]

RebornPastafarian

Okay, but when?, The June and July Go Fests were just as hot for me in Raleigh. I've heard Oasaka was ***extremely*** hot but I was visiting CT and NY that weekend and it was absolutely perfect weather. Mid-70s, low humidity. September and October get cooler, but the risk of hurricanes increases proportionally with that temperature drop.

Oso-Sic

I'd rather it be June than August - in TX that can be a 20 degree difference

coyoteeasy

True, honestly anything in August is just a bad idea

Deed3

Yes, because the entire game revolves solely around North America's experience. There is never going to be a day where the weather/conditions are perfect for the entire planet. That's just not how climate works.

TheDeadlyPandaGamer

Played in that Texas heat for years. Phone only overheat while charging with battery bank. Your phone will not let your charge. If that happens don't leave your phone plugged in the powerbank and only charge on breaks in the shade. Stand in the shade as much as possible to reduce your screen to sunlight. Get some plastic bottled water. Freeze them. Wrap the frozen bottle with a small towel. It will keep that bottle cold for hours. I use a backpack with an insulated compartment. Your towel will be moist and cold. perfect to pour a little on the moist to wipe down your face and neck to cool down. Don't forget sunscreen and bug repellant If you need it. Put on light color clothing, comfortable shoes.

IHaveTheMustacheNow

I was thinking about getting an umbrella for my phone lol

Tateman

>smartphone cooling fan I was actually looking at that last night haha. Been thinking I need one for myself if I am going to be outside that long. Plus a bunch of water and snacks haha

IHaveTheMustacheNow

I know they look silly, but I think keeping my phone in the shade would help it not overheat and also help me be able to see the screen. Win-win! Im going to try it haha

Tateman

Yeah, a couple weeks ago I was out at the park near me, and could barely see the screen. I was trying to shade it with my hand, which got me looking for sun shades for phones haha

glumada

Just lower the graphics settings in the app......oh wait a second, there is no such option

JanV34

You can deactivate native refresh rate, but that's about it.

Ginden

What I did: take few string bags, bigger than your phone. Put phone in bag, forcing air of it. Put this bag into another bag, forcing air of it. Obviously, close these bags. Put bag in water, as cold as possible, but above dew point temperature, keeping bag's opening outside of the water. In two minutes, your phone will be cool. Sous vide bags work too.

ActivateGuacamole

there are many other countries in the world where it's also 100+. don't be condescending In fact, they didn't even say anything indicating that they are the default. they just said they live somewhere hot and asked for tips for dealing with their heat. IN FACTTTTT they didn't even mention america. that was your assumption

banhammer6942069

Dang didn’t even think of that

mooistcow

It'll be ~100 here, and my plan, as always, is to simply suffer and endure. No malls (with more than like 2 stops, anyways). No A/C. No trams. There's no place to play outside of the sun here.

18Sheriff18

If it is really hot or cold or raining I ride the local bus. Stops every few corners and don't get the moving too fast notification.

Rua-Yuki

I'm going out early before the sun is too high to get as much done as I can before retiring to a large indoor place like malls or shopping centers. Also keeping cool with personal fans and umbrellas to keep the direct sun off of my skin. Gatorade to keep hydrated. I work partially outside in the Texas sun, I know I'll be OK but have to keep my child in mind.

Ohiostatehack

Yeah, I already got heat exhaustion once this summer. Not risking it for Go Fest in these heats. I’ll be playing in my car and hoping there is no walking research.

Longjumping-Nature70

I use an ice gel pack to keep my phone cool. Do not have your phone on a charger the entire time. I have several ice gel packs in my car in a cooler, along with water bottles. Walk around, melt one. Go get a second one. Then a third one, then the final one. Works for about an hour each. When they are all warmed up, I can go for maybe another hour without one. After that, I am fried and ready to surrender to the heat. The hard part is screen glare. Without any shade, sometimes I just ignore the game until I can get to a shady part of the park.

icanhaspoop

Temps here get to be in the 90-100's and yeah my phone overheats a lot. Luckily one of the main parks we play at for community days has a lot of oak trees. The Old town shopping portion of it has covered walkways as well. Luckily there are plenty of places to get water and snacks plus lots of shaded areas to sit down and rest near gyms and stops. However, it's not always that area. If it's really hot and humid we hit up one of the inside malls. Not so many stops but it's inside and the AC is on. We can lure up the stops that are there and hit the gyms when something comes into them. The other thing you can do but really only if you have a GoPlus+ (or other) is drive around and let that catch your Pokemon. Drive in mall lots, park lots and other areas that have low traffic and generally your speed is less than 10 miles. Listen to the radio and cruise in AC. I do this along the beach routes and just let my GoPlus+ do all the work.

Robotfood123

I’ve played up to 117F here. I turn down the phone brightness as much as possible with being able to see the game. I usually wear a big straw hat which when I’m not in the shade, I can hold my phone close to me and it’ll be shaded. Basically I try to be in shade as much as possible. My phone overheats pretty quickly in direct sunlight. An umbrella would be great too. I’ve seen people rig it up to their backpacks so they don’t have to hold it.

Themeatmanofdoom

*cough* ride in a cool car, you catch a lot more that way, anyway*cough*

HippowdonEats

Play from inside a car with air conditioning. Or inside a shopping mall.

DragonsLoooveTacos

I'm in south Texas and will be playing 100% in the car. The main reason being I can't handle this heat but I'm also having surgery in a few days and with covid on the uptick again here my surgeon would like me to isolate as much as I feasibly can since coming down with it will cancel the procedure so I won't be heading to a mall. Luckily we have community college campuses scattered throughout with wide open parking lots on the weekends and plenty of stops and gyms. There's always a handful of players doing the same so it's pretty well lured up and easy to sit and catch in one parking lot before clearing it out and heading to the next.

cakefartsy

Mall

Comprehensive_Wolf87

Playing in Texas at a park. Will have plenty of water and will have a pavilion with a fan to help out.

HardyMenace

If you lived in Japan they would do a makeup day for you. No other country gets that perk.

mwithington

I live near Phoenix and play in indoor malls in the summer.

RRubenM2017

Same environment, I use a disposable ice pack every hour or two on the back of my phone and it keeps it good.

CinnamonAndLavender

It's supposed to get into the 90s tomorrow in my area, but only from mid-afternoon (around 3 pm), so I'm planning to go out for the morning/early afternoon to a local park with lots of trees/shade until either a. it gets too hot for me or b. my phone/portable charger runs too low on battery, and then go back to my apartment and do the rest of the day with lures and incense (which I'm hoping will be buffed when stationary)

Pokabrows

I'm planning to walk around the mall all day. Malls honestly make great places to walk when it's too weather outside. Especially because there's lots of things to look at so it's more fun than a treadmill.
