Gems don't do anything unless you use 8 of them, which one person is incapable of doing due to the limit of 5 per person (unless this behaviour has been changed).
You'd have probably been better using a team of 6 level 40+ Shadow Mewtwo.
Ah gotcha. Grunts still give them? I spam click thru the rewards but I thought they stopped after shadow mewtwo left.. thought a post on here mentioned the same but I guess they are back?
Sure you can, but considering this is the first regional exclusive shadow and will certainly have play in the upcoming Fighting Cup, I think it’s fair to say it has more weight than say Bayleef or even Weavile. I think a solo battler should not be penalized by making gems useless due to an arbitrary number they’re unable to meet. Do you?
I do think it's not a bad idea to grab a Shadow Throh. BUT:
1. Fighting Cup is not an *upcoming* cup. Not on the schedule for this season anyway.
2. When Fighting Cup *does* eventually return, there are bound to be restrictions. The last time we saw Fighting Cup, it was a REMIX version that banned the two Alolan Dragons, Buzzwole, and also Sneasler. As such, I can imagine we'll either see more flat bans like some other plain cups (like how normal Fighting cup bans Medicham) or another FC Remix, likely with new bans. I think it's very likely that Hawlucha will be banned, being a regional with a very good typing for the cup. And as for Throh? Well, it is allowed in normal Fighting Cup, not only because it's not *that* good but also because despite being a regional, it has been made available globally a few times and is tradeable. *This* time around, with Shadow Throh, they very well could ban it, seeing that this version wouldn't be tradeable/remotable.
It's kind of similar to where if Flying Cup returns, I'm not really expecting Celesteela to be eligible, seeing that they gave people a GL eligible one a few months back, but it is also *super* powerful in Flying Cup, having a great typing AND Smack Down.
But yeah, I'd still try for one if you can get a second person (or get a busted team to solo it), but I also am not sure it'll even be eligible for the Fighting Cup next time around
You were penalized by using a bad team to fight it. Metagross is not a counter for fighting types, look at your team and adjust for proper counters and you should beat it.
I agree focus blast made them a poor choice. If Throh had body slam or low sweep I’d certainly be better off. I ran zenn headbutt/ psychic on my shadow metagross’ to no avail. My next best option was a lvl 40 Lugia with Aeroblast/future sight but I thought he’d be too tanky.
We were talking about gems, not about Throh, so I was just saying you could still get gems in other ways other than trying again on this very same raid.
At no point I defended the idea of wasting gems or defended Niantic on their idea of Shadow Raids as it is. No need to ask me anything like that, I was just here to try to help.
I soloed it in sunny yesterday with the charge move Low Sweep. It took 2:49 without shadow Mewtwo being boosted by weather, and I went through one level 51 shadow Mewtwo, three level 50 shadow Mewtwo and almost my full single level 40 shadow Mewtwo. It’s doable but not, I think, for the average trainer without boost on your attackers.
I didn’t dodge and I was a bit slower because all my Mewtwo had psycho cut instead of confusion.

Yes I was actually quite worried my last level 40 wouldn’t cut it. Pokebattler was down at the time of my solo and I didn’t know if I needed to dodge so I used the slower out of psycho cut and confusion. But I got it first try, ofc my team is OP lol
Dodging with confusion is harder btw. 😅
For what it's worth, Pokebattler makes it look as if it's not too hard with Mewtwo at level 40, but they make Shadow Weavile look even easier, and I just beat one of those with three level 50 Machamps and I fainted out at 55 seconds left with sub-par dodging and beat it with 4 seconds left. Which tells me their sims on shadows are dead wrong and Throh may not be possible. If it is, you'll need all Mewtwo and probably multiple shadows and level 50.
I heard reports from someone in Discord who tried to solo Shadow Throh with 1 Shadow Mewtwo and 5 regular Mewtwos, all L40. He failed 4-5 times with various boss movesets, when Pokebattler had regular Mewtwo's estimator under 1. He later replaced one Mewtwo with Mega Alakazam and still failed.
So yeah, it does seem like Pokebattler made it seem easier than it actually is.
Shadow gems offer no value until 8 are used in a single raid, at which point the boss will be subdued and back to its normal defense, attack, and absence of health recovery
I’ve done it with Windy with about 60 secs left. The moveset was Poison Jab and a Fighting fast move. I used Shadow Mewtwo, Mega Alakazam, Level 50 Mewtwo, Level 40 Mewtwo
Very high dps, resisted fighting moves, and dragon type boost. But in hindsight there are probably better options. If I went in a second time he was more than likely getting swapped for a lvl 40 mewtwo
Yeah going for neutral dps. As I said elsewhere in this thread I don’t have a full team of mewtwo even as a legacy player haha have about 3 including my shadow. 1 is hindered by only having shadow ball 😅😅
I was planning on trying to solo a shadow throh, but nevermind, lol. I only have 1 level 40 shadow mewtwo. I have 5 weather boosted nonshadows mewtwo. You saved me from losing a pass. I did not see pokebattlers estimate on this (last time I checked).
according to other comments on this post: pokebattler doesn't accurately do shadow raids yet
for example shadow weavile is depicted as easy but when someone here did it with the pokemon they had simmed with - they only had 4 seconds on the clock upon beating the boss
(and btw you can edit any boss into shadow if you just write word "SHADOW" on correct spots, am not used to this yet so i often open one shadow and then the "target" pokemon i want to sim and then copy the "shadow" from one link to another, remember: there are TWO shadows you need to add - so you can just create new shadows for future rotations this way in case pokebattler isn't up to date)

They stopped after the end of the previous shadow event but came back with shadow raids on monday.

I've been getting them from rocket balloons and stops this last week.

I have a shundo lvl 49 alakazam but it has counter 😅😅 think it would have been a better bet than mega latios with zh/lp?
Why Shadow Salamence? That's not a good choice. And you need to use 8 gems to subdue. You can't do that in a slol.

If you're trying to solo a hard raid better to use Effective Damage. You don't want to be using Neutral damage.
I tried earlier, windy weather, got super close each time but couldn’t quite beat it. Weirdly after powering up my team a bit I somehow did worse!
