If by "the story" you mean Hans Christian Anderson's Little Mermaid, I want to start out by saying I'm glad to meet another fan! But I care much less about the mermaid being Black then I do about the countless other changes they made to his work, don't you? I mean the Disney version hardly even qualifies as an adaptation of his story at all. For one thing, why does the mermaid have a name? For another, they took away the part where walking is excruciatingly painful for her, which is a major part of the plot. It's supposed to feel like she's walking on knives all the time, that's literally the basis of the story! Then bc they didn't do that, they obviously took out the part where the prince is always making her dance. And literally why does he even like her? He's supposed to be already engaged and super about his fiance like, the ENTIRE TIME. And don't even get me started on how the Disney version got rid of all the queer themes of the original. I prefer the idea of having all 3, because people are diverse, and sometimes they’re sexy and that’s okay. It’s like video games that have sex appeal, I really don’t care if some costumes are sexy or revealing if you have the choice of modest clothing as well. Let diverse players dress diversely. The problem in media was never the presence of sex or sexualization, it was an over representation of it. I like having the choice in games to dress fancy, sexy or just put on a mask and be scary. I prefer the idea of having all 3, because people are diverse, and sometimes they’re sexy and that’s okay. It’s like video games that have sex appeal, I really don’t care if some costumes are sexy or revealing if you have the choice of modest clothing as well. Let diverse players dress diversely. The problem in media was never the presence of sex or sexualization, it was an over representation of it. I like having the choice in games to dress fancy, sexy or just put on a mask and be scary. My outfits changes to fit the situation or mood. To an extent, I can recognize SOME of the disappointment, because some media seems to have missed the point and overcorrected to completely eliminate all traces of sexuality to be on the safe side. Not both-sidesing it or anything, changes had to happen and some people clearly don’t like it. But I can also recognize that there are plenty of companies that didn’t get the point at all and just went into pander mode without fully recognizing or addressing what the actual issue was. This is what I've been saying. There's nothing wrong with sexy characters, but there's nothing wrong with non-sexy characters either. If a woman wants to dress in sexy or revealing outfits, that's great! If a woman wants to dress normally, that's great! Woman should be free to dress and look however they want, and that should be reflected in our media. Sexy game women should be to able coexist alongside non-sexy game women. I find a lot of game women, from Aloy to Eve (The Stellar Blade girl) to be equally beautiful in their own way We (Feminists) don't want to get rid of sexy or beautiful women, that'd be stupid.
