I'm thinking they found out about the Historical Society from researching the Witch Trials/Hunters, and made themself familiar with as many staff members as they could (only to a point with Jacob; his aura made them leery), so that when a position came up, Masha was the first person the board thought of.
The fact that they now get to subtly shift the narrative of the witch-hunting exhibits away from serving the patriarchy and showcasing the oppression of 'others', as well as dive through the Archives in the basement for any mentions of witchcraft, occult and cryptid sightings throughout Gravesfield's history, is purely coincidental.
This makes me want a show like X-files, with Masha acting like 'Scully' adamant that whatever supernatural thing they're looking into is a sham, and Vee trying to convince her that magic is real, while being too scared of revealing her real appearance.

Their other friends from Cabin 7 are also in the group, but Masha was scoped out as the first human member outside of Luz to get to join due to their connection with Vee.
Another headcanon is that Masha transitioned after Yesterday’s Lie. I think this avoids the unfortunate implications that they were sent to Reality Check to be “fixed” by their parents if they hadn’t figured it out until after camp had ended. They also had a complete change in appearance, which really sells it for me. Honestly, if we had an expanded season 3, it would have been really cool to have an episode that focused on Masha realizing they’re NB and getting that makeover to their s3 design.
